Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To preserve (保存) Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (醇母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.

)Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work preserved for longer.
“The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can appreciate (欣赏) what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

Wangari Maathai, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was born on April 1, 1940, in Kenya (肯尼亚). Growing up in the countryside, Wangari was deeply connected to the land from an early age. This early experience with the environment later inspired her life’s work, which has left an unforgettable mark on the world.
With the help of a program, Wangari received her university education in the United States. After graduation, she returned to Kenya. In 1971, she got a doctor’s degree from the University of Nairobi, becoming the first woman doctor in East and Central Africa. But her greater achievement was outside the university. In 1977, Wangari set up the Green Belt Movement, an organization focused on tree planting, environmental protection, and women’s rights. She called on Kenyan women to plant trees in their hometown. This simple act not only helped to protect the environment but also made women powerful economically (经济地) and socially.
Wangari focused not only on environmental problems. She made great efforts to fight for democracy (民主), human rights, and social fairness. Her activism (激进主义) often put her in disagreement with the Kenyan government. As a result, she was put in prison (监狱) several times, but she kept fighting bravely. It was because of her tireless work that she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She became the first African woman to receive the award.
Wangari passed away on September 25, 2011, but her spirit continues to inspire a worldwide movement towards environmental protection and social fairness. Her book, Unbowed, records her life journey and the challenges she faced, offering an inspiration to countless people worldwide. Her story lives on through the millions of trees planted by the Green Belt Movement and the countless lives she touched through her hard work. It serves as a reminder that even the smallest actions, like planting a tree, can have a great influence on the world.

)But the big question is, do we get as much knowledge from audiobooks as we do from paper books? Researchers did an experiment to find the answer. Volunteers in Group One were asked to listen to an audiobook while volunteers in Group Two read a book of the same content (内容). It turned out that they recalled as much information, whether they listened to or read it.
Another study from The Journal of Neuroscience further supported the result above. In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people’s brains when they listened to and read books. The result showed that listening to audiobooks activated (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading did.
However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing some other tasks at the same time. “If you’re trying to learn while doing two things, you’ re not going to learn as well,” Daniel Willingham, a researcher at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.
( )32. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over paper books?
A. They are easier to take.
B. They offer choices in content.
C. They improve people’s eyesight.
D. They free people in time and place.
( )33. What did researchers find in the study?
A. People recalled more information from reading paper books.
B. Listening activated different parts of the brain from reading.
C. People can read and listen to the same content at the same time.
D. Listening makes no difference in recalling information from reading.
( )34. What can we infer from the text?
A. People need to stay focused while reading.
B. People often do other tasks while listening.
C. People actually learn better from audiobooks.
D. People have to activate the brain to learn better.

Nowadays, many schools are organizing students to go out for a study trip. Our class had a discussion about whether Grade Nine students should be allowed to take part in the study trip.
As the old saying goes, “Read as many as ten thousand books and travel as far as ten thousand miles.” I think we should be allowed to take part in it. Firstly, it provides us a chance to feel the power of nature. I think it is important for all of us to make an effort to travel and explore the world around us. In addition, we will have many team building activities to make our friendship stronger. What’s more, the study trip can not only help us reduce pressure but also make us relaxed.
All in all, I think study trip is helpful to achieve a better self and life.

Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists
recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To preserve (保存 ) Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what
ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that
had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and
yeast (醇母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common
drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains and
yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface.
Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it
had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists
in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study
published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs
can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to
oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed
that the yolk’s proteins helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also
reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed
fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work preserved for
longer.
“The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the
more we can appreciate (欣赏) what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at
the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that
research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

APeriod of Glory (荣耀)
During the Tang dynasty the country was full of creative energy. Foreigners
were more welcome than ever before, and the mix of cultures and ideas made
China an exciting place.
Tea became very popular during the Tang dynasty. Everyone loved to drink it.
Tea was grown in China, and the traders who sold it became extremely rich. So
much money was being used that China was running out of coins. The traders
invented a kind of paper money that they called “flying money”. Perhaps because
the money flew so fast from one person to the next. This was the first type of paper
money in the world.
A number of other inventions also took hold. At the end of the Tang dynasty,
the invention of printing led to the creation of books. Hundreds of years would
pass before printing was invented in Europe.

dynasty. For many centuries, Chinese scientists had tried to create gold and find

Wangari Maathai, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was born on April 1, 1940, in
Kenya (肯尼亚). Growing up in the countryside, Wangari was deeply connected to
the land from an early age. This early experience with the environment later
inspired her life’s work, which has left an unforgettable mark on the world.
With the help of a program, Wangari received her university education in the
United States. After graduation, she returned to Kenya. In 1971, she got a doctor’s
degree from the University of Nairobi, becoming the first woman doctor in East
and Central Africa. But her greater achievement was outside the university. In
1977, Wangari set up the Green Belt Movement, an organization focused on tree
planting, environmental protection, and women’s rights. She called on Kenyan
women to plant trees in their hometown. This simple act not only helped to protect
the environment but also made women powerful economically (经济地 ) and
socially.
Wangari focused not only on environmental problems. She made great efforts
to fight for democracy (民主), human rights, and social fairness. Her activism (激
进主义) often put her in disagreement with the Kenyan government. As a result,
she was put in prison (监狱 ) several times, but she kept fighting bravely. It was
because of her tireless work that she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
She became the first African woman to receive the award.
Wangari passed away on September 25, 2011, but her spirit continues to
inspire a worldwide movement towards environmental protection and social
fairness. Her book, Unbowed, records her life journey and the challenges she faced,
offering an inspiration to countless people worldwide. Her story lives on through
the millions of trees planted by the Green Belt Movement and the countless lives
she touched through her hard work. It serves as a reminder that even the smallest

When you take the subway, you might notice many people, old and young,
listening to audiobooks instead of reading paper books. Audiobooks have become
quite popular these days. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks
over traditional books? Is listening to an audiobook just as good as reading a paper
book?
You need to find time available and a quiet place to sit down and read.
However, you can listen to audiobooks anytime and anywhere you like, and it
gives your eyes a break, too.
But the big question is, do we get as much knowledge from audiobooks as we
do from paper books? Researchers did an experiment to find the answer.
Volunteers in Group One were asked to listen to an audiobook while volunteers in
Group Two read a book of the same content (内容). It turned out that they recalled
as much information, whether they listened to or read it.
Another study from The Journal of Neuroscience further supported the result
above. In the study, researchers scanned (扫描) people’s brains when they listened
to and read books. The result showed that listening to audiobooks activated (激活)
almost the same parts of the brain as reading did.
However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper
books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often doing
some other tasks at the same time. “If you’re trying to learn while doing two things,
you’ re not going to learn as well,” Daniel Willingham, a researcher at the
University of Virginia, told The New York Times.

A game called “Black Myth: Wukong” has recently become a hot topic
worldwide. Since the official release (发行) of the game, over 18 million players
51 (pay) for it.
Based on a Chinese classic novel, Journey to the West, the game allows
people to experience Chinese traditional culture in addition to the fun and joy of
52 (play) the game. Wukong, or Monkey King, is the main character in
53 book. The story is about a series of 54 (adventure) of a monk
( 和 尚 ) and his three followers including Wukong, who is known for his
supernatural abilities and courage.
Black Myth is receiving a lot of praise for its artistic design and cultural
influence. The game is 55 attractive that players can’t wait to learn
more about Chinese culture. As a result, the interest 56 ancient Chinese
literature has also increased among young people. Even those who were not fans
of Chinese classics before may be encouraged to read the book.
In fact, games or movies rich in cultural elements (元素 ) can 57

VI. Reading Expression ( 10小题,每小题 1分,共 10分 )
Poverty (贫困 ) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a
good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of
just giving money to poor people, it has also tried to educate people and give them
the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary (平凡的 ) people
play a big role in fighting poverty. Here are two examples of them.
After graduating from Beijing Normal University in 2016, Huang Wenxiu
gave up the chances to work in big cities and returned to her hometown Baise in
Guangxi and served as the Party chief (党委书记 ) of the village. Thanks to her
efforts, a total of 418 villagers were lifted out of poverty. Unluckily, she died in a
