The new VR experience was developed by the University of South Australia, hoping to educate children to learn how to be safe in a fire. It presents a situation for children aged 10-12. In the situation, they are tasked to look after a friend’s dog just before a fire event begins. They take part in a set of problem-solving activities to help save and protect themselves and the dog. The findings showed that over 80% of children could calmly tell the advantages and disadvantages of different choices. They also learned to make wise decisions to protect themselves from a fire. Children thought it especially important and meaningful, because 91% of them didn’t have knowledge of fires at the beginning, and 67% had said that they were too young to make safety decisions in a fire. The researchers believed such VR experiences made it possible to  engage, educate and empower the young. “As children born in modern times, they are interested in such technology and they can experience events in a real situation yet within the safe environment,” said Delene Weber, one of the researchers. “Well-designed VR can provide children with surprisingly valuable learning tools.” Meanwhile, because children have fewer life experiences, aren’t as physically strong, and are less likely to have learned much about fire safety, they’re often most at risk. However, the role that children play in the fire safety at their homes should not be underestimated(低估). “Children don’t need to be always waiting for help in disasters. With these VR experiences, we can make children understand the risks and realize they can help,” said Weber. ( B )1. What’s the purpose of the new VR experience? A. To describe children’s reactions to fire disasters. B. To teach children to save themselves in a fire. C. To introduce ways of avoiding a fire to children. D. To increase children’s interest in VR experiences. ( D )2. From the findings, what’s the children’s attitude(态度) towards the new VR experience? A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive. While it seems breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it might actually be dinner,” she says. “Our blood sugar control is best early in the day. When we eat dinner late, that’s when we’re weak because our blood sugar is the worst.” Researchers designed a study in which 52 women took part in a 12-week weight loss program. All had the same number of calories(卡路 里) over the day, but half had breakfast, while the other half did not. What they found was that it wasn’t breakfast itself that caused the people who joined this study to lose weight: it was changing their normal routine. When you have been eating less and less, and the blood sugar in your body drops, your body will produce something named “cortisol (皮质醇)” that specifically has a great influence on blood sugar. But it can also create stress in the body, making you feel sad and nervous. ( A )1. Which meal should be made the largest if someone wants a lower BMI? A. Breakfast. B. Lunch. C. Dinner. D. Marathons(马拉 松) in China are getting popular again. According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered(注册) for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon races nationwide, reported China Daily. Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old boy from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2. For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He ran about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the race. “Unlike the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance(耐力) and psychological quality (心理素质),” he told Teens. When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long distance running, the only   opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added. Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the crowds also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The cheers from the people along the course really encouraged her. “When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words,‘ keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and enabled me to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens. She believes that running a marathon is about focusing on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Similarly, our life is also a marathon,” Li said. ( A )1. Let’s take a look at Three Chinese Classical Intelligence(智 力) Games-Tangram, Nine Linked Rings(九连环) and Huarong Road.   ① First popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Tangram is a game made up of seven pieces of different shapes, including five triangles, a square and a parallelogram. Players need to use these seven pieces to create new shapes. To do it, they must know about plane geometry(平面几何). In the 18th century, the game spread to the West and soon became popular there.   ② Nine Linked Rings puzzle has a history of over 2,000 years. It is made up of nine rings connected to a handle(手柄). Players need to move all the rings from the handle to win the game. This is not a simple game. For example, if you want to move the ninth ring, you have to move the third, fifth and seventh ones first, or you will not be able to do it.   ③ Huarong Road puzzle is a block-moving game. It first appeared in the early 20th century. Each block is named after a character in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, like Cao Cao, Guan Yu and Zhao Yun. To win the game, players need to move the blocks to get Cao Cao out. It aims to test the players’ math knowledge, for example, geometric area. The boy, Wang Fa, born in 2008, is a member of the Va ethnic group(佤族) from Yunnan. After winning the under-14 title(冠军) in the Guangzhou stop of the 2022 ASICS Tennis Junior Tour, an audience(观众) member from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photos were taken. “We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. This is a typical farming tool of the Va ethnic group. I carried my rackets in this basket to honor my hometown,” Wang said after the match. Before tennis, Wang was just an ordinary boy from a village. But in 2016, he was chosen by a local club as one of the first 10 local children to learn to play professional tennis. “I was nervous at the beginning because the outside world was so different from my home,” he said, adding that tennis has helped him make more friends and get a better education. Over the past six years, Wang, along with other players at the Yunnan Wild Elephants Tennis Club, has trained hard to improve his skills and physical strength. The children would get up at 6:30 a.m., and practice for more than six hours a day. Every day, they need to swing a racket more than 7,000 times and run 9 kilometers. “If it were not for tennis, I would still be helping out my family with farm work back home,” Wang said. Wang’s parents didn’t want him to learn tennis at first because they couldn’t afford it. But the tennis club offered to teach him for free.
