【2024·盐城中考】Taking Root
How many kinds of plants are there in the world? Lucy Braun
wondered that as a child. She showed great interest in plants at a young
age. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby
woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with
their wild colors. Others hid behind rocks.
Lucy looked at the shapes of leaves as she walked in the woods. She
kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw. Then
she could compare all kinds of plants. Later, Lucy grew more and more
interested in botany, the study of plants.
At university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks
and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the
natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took
classes in ecology(生态学). Lucy believed that plant life in some areas
was able to move to other places over time.
Branching Out
In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a
house near the woods. Lucy collected plants from all around the country.
She took many photos of them, too. Color photography was still new
then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos a lot.
The of Labor(劳动)
Later in her life, Lucy wrote many field guides. In 1950, she
published her most important guide. It describes the plants in the forests
across the country. Ecologists still use it to study changes in the forests
over time.
In Full Bloom
Today, Lucy has a few plants named after her. One of them is Lucy
Braun’s snakeroot, which is now in danger. Lucy’s work in the
protection of nature may help prevent its disappearance.
Lucy Braun lived to be 81. In her years as a botanist, Lucy
collected nearly 12,000 plants!

A. However, this only works when we’re looking at names within our

B. The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38 percent of the
time.
C. People may think that women named Rose are beautiful.
D. However, some scientists believe it only happens by chance.
E. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about
names.
F. What does this mean, exactly?
Have you ever met someone who “looks like” their names? 1
Scientists are suggesting that humans tend to associate people’s names
with their looks, and can even guess someone’s name based on how they
look.
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel collected
thousands of photos of people’s faces. They labeled(贴标签) each
photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of
the four names was correct.
F
2 It seems that humans recognize certain characteristics(特
点) that can give them clues(线索) about someone’s name, Reader’s
Digest reported.
3 Volunteers were also not as good at guessing the real
names of people who use nicknames(昵称). This shows that a person’s
appearance is affected by their name only if they use it often.
B
A
This kind of face-name matching happens “because of a process of
self-fulfilling prophecy(自我实现预言), as we become what other
people expect us to become,” Ruth Mayo, from the university, told
science news website Eurek Alert.
Previous studies have shown that gender and race(种族) stereotype
(偏见) can affect a person’s appearance. 4 For example,
people tend to think that men named Bob should have rounder faces
because the word itself looks round.
E
5 They expect them to be delicate(娇弱的) and feminine
(有女性气质的), just like the flower they are named for.

【2024·固原一模】China has changed a lot in the years since I first
moved here. One major development is the use of cashless payment(无
现金支付), which has changed the way we live and shop.
China is the first country to have cashless payment. I used a debit
card(借记卡) to pay for things without cash for years in the US. Now I
can use my phone instead and it’s easy and convenient. One of the things I
like most is that I can send and receive money directly(直接地) among
my friends. It is much easier to pay for the meal when we eat out together.
And it is also simple to travel.
But like all technology, cashless payment has some problems as
well. What happens if your phone gets lost or internet connection doesn’t
work? Not long ago, I went to a nearby store to buy some snacks. But
when I got there, I found that the store’s internet connection didn’t work.
I couldn’t pay for the bill with my phone. And I didn’t have any cash with
me, so I had to leave. So even though cashless payments are
convenient, you should always carry a bit of cash.
Nowadays, there are lots of new technologies like cashless payment
in China. It tells the world that this country develops very fast and many
technologies even take the lead.
