Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.
AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £ 169. 15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost £ 118.15.
If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid--- or you're looking for a big event to pass your time--- check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.
STAYAWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.
Don't be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge's Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £ 95.95 . A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £ 75.75 . And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £ 62.95 .
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London. Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As a choice consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen, where you can cook. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O'Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for £ 420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.
GET ON A BIKE London’s "Boris bikes' have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programs that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.
Among the smaller cities with their own programs are Newcastle (casual members pay around £ 1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day).
36.The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events may ________.
A.help travelers pass time
B.attract lots of travelers to the UK
C.allow travelers to make flexible plans
D.cause travelers to pay more for accommodation
37."Farringdon" in Paragraph 5 is most probably ________.

C.an ideal holiday destination D.the name of a travel agency
38.The passage shows that the O'Neill Flat ________.
A.lies on the ground floor
B.is located in central London
C.provides cooking facilities for tourists
D.costs over £100 on average per day in late September

A.half an hour B.one hour
C.one hour and a half D.two hours
40.The main purpose of the passage is ________.
A.to tell visitors how to book in advance
B.to supply visitors with hotel information
C.to show visitors the importance of self-help
D.to offer visitors some money-saving tips

Brushing your teeth twice a day should keep the dentist away. But if a group of scientific researchers have their wish, it will make the rest of your body healthy too. A toothbrush that checks blood sugar and bacteria while you brush is currently in development in the USA.It is one of many gadgets(小器械) proposed by engineers and doctors at the Center for Future Health in New York.
The gadgets seem fanciful, but the basic principles are simple. The gadgets should make it easy for people to detect illness long before it strikes and so seek treatment far earlier than normal. Instead of relying on hi-tech hospitals, the emphasis(重点) is shifted to the home and easy-to-use gadgets. In the long run, the technology may even prevent illness by encouraging us to lead healthier lives.
Intelligent bandages are a good example. Powerful sensors within the bandage could quickly identify tiny amounts of bacteria in a wound and determine what medicine would work best. The cut could then be treated instantly.
The biggest development is melanoma(黑色素瘤) monitor designed to give early warnings of cancer. It could be used to take a picture of your body each week, and then compare it to previous images. If a problem is found, the system would advise you to get a check-up.
If all this sounds worrying, then help is at hand. Experts are also working on a “digital doctor”, complete with a comforting bedside manner. A standard computer would be able to understand your voice and answer questions about your symptoms in plain English and in a way which could calm your nerves.
Stress is no sweat either. A portable communication aid could recognize certain phrases and tones and let you know when you are about to lose your temper. The software would also suggest ways of keeping your cool.
Researchers are still struggling, however, with making the technology cheap and simple enough for the household user. That is going to be the difficult part.
41.The gadgets mentioned in Paragraph 1 ________.
A.are used only in hospitals
B.are too complicated to operate
C.help people recover from illness
D.can detect disease as soon as possible
42.A melanoma monitor can benefit ________.
A.those dealing with stress B.potential cancer patients
C.people suffering a wound D.people who’ve got toothache
43.The underlined part “keeping your cool” in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by “________”.
A.staying calm B.stopping sweating
C.keeping handsome D.expressing in words
44.It is difficult for scientists to ________.
A.persuade people to use the gadgets B.design inventions to prevent illness
C.collect enough money for their work D.make the gadgets affordable and handy
45.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.A Doctor in the House B.Hospitals in the Future
C.Tips for Brushing your Teeth D.The History of Medical Equipment

According to reports, three-quarters of all crops around the world depend on pollinating (授粉的) insects like bees and butterflies. By pollinating, pollinators enable the production of seeds. Without them, crop farming can become extremely difficult or costly threatening food supplies and prices globally.
Research has shown a rapid and consistent decline in pollinator populations. Average butterfly populations have almost halved since 1991 and bee populations in particular face a sharp decline. Given the world’s growing dependence on these insects, we can only expect the problem to worsen if no action is taken.
Much has been written about how intensive farming practices the use of chemical pesticides (杀虫剂), and pollution are threatening the survival of these helpful insects. To add to the already critical situation, global warming is contributing significantly to the rapid disappearance of pollinators.
Climate change is a major threat to pollinators, with rising temperatures and increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events affecting the food sources and habitats, on which pollinators depend for their survival.
Climate change also changes the timing and availability of lowering plants, leading to mismatches between pollinators and their food sources. A study has found that climate change has shifted plants’ blooming to earlier times and caused certain plants to move to higher areas, resulting in a decline in pollination.
Another study has found that climate change could lead to a decline in the quality of nectar, which is the main food source for many pollinators. As temperatures rise, the sugar content of nectar decreases, making it less nutritious for pollinators. This leads to a decline in the health and reproductive success of pollinators, as well as a decline in the pollination of plants.
Needless to say, cutting global emissions (排放量) is key. It’s essential that we continue to advocate for emission reductions. From country-level to individual businesses, more concrete roadmaps to net zero are a must.
We must at least minimize, if not prevent, the usage of pesticides, since these chemicals are harmful to pollinators and can have a far-reaching effect on pollination as a whole.
46.What does paragraph 1 try to show?
A.The influence of crop crises. B.The importance of pollinators.
C.The serious challenges faced by humans. D.The increasing difficulty of crop production.
47.How does the author sound in paragraph 2?
A.Curious. B.Suspicious. C.Humorous. D.Anxious.
48.What do paragraphs 3 — 4 mainly talk about?
A.Why chemical pesticides are harmful to pollinators. B.Causes of the decline in pollinator populations.
C.The importance of pollinators to the ecosystem. D.How climate change has affected pollinators.
49.What have the two studies found?
A.Climate change greatly affects pollination.
B.Pollution seriously threatens pollinators survival.
C.Global warming contributes to the loss of pollinators’ habitats.
D.Improper farming practices cause some pollinators to disappear.
50.What is a suggestion for helping pollinators?
A.Starting keeping bees. B.Reducing pesticide use.
C.Increasing the amount of nectar. D.Building more habitats for pollinators.
D
History has been characterized differently. It’s hard to define such a monumental thing without dealing with the tensions between what is fact and what is fiction, as well as what was included and what was left out. So it’s only fitting that those tensions are wrapped up in the history of the word itself.
The short version is that the term history has evolved from an ancient Greek verb that means “to know”. The Greek word historia originally meant inquiry, the act of seeking knowledge, as well as the knowledge that results from inquiry. And from there it’s a short jump to the accounts of events that a person might put together from making inquiries-what we might call stories.
The words story and history share much of their ancestry, and in previous eras, the overlap between them was much messier than it is today. The working out of distinction has taken centuries. Today, we might think of the dividing line as the one between fact and fiction. Stories are fanciful tales woven at bedtime. That word can even be used to describe an outright lie. Histories, on the other hand, are records of events. That word refers to all time before this very moment and everything that really happened up to now.
The distinction is still messier than that, of course. Plenty of stories like the story of a person’s life or a "true story" on which a less-true film is based -are supposed to be factual. And plenty of stories go against easy categorization one way or the other. Take the notion of someone telling their side of a story. To them, that account might be perfectly correct. To someone else, that account might be totally incorrect.
As the linguistic divide has evolved since the Middle Ages, we have come to expect more from history -that it be free from the imperfections of viewpoint and selective memory that stories so often contain. Yet it isn’t, humans being the imperfect creatures and history being something that is made rather than handed down from some all-knowing writer.
That is why feminists, for example, rejected the word history and championed the notion of herstory during the 1970s to point out the fact that history has mostly come from a male perspective. The “his” in history has nothing, linguistically, to do with the pronoun referring to a male person. And some critics pointed that out back in the 1970s, saying that the invention of herstory showed ignorance about where the word comes from. But there’s evidence that the feminists knew as much at the time. And more importantly, the fact that it sounds possible that there would be a link can still tell us something. It can suggest a lot the about gender and whether a female viewpoint is included in the tales passed down in textbooks. That’s why, even if the origins of the word “history” are clear, the question of who gets to decide which version of the past is the right one remains a controversial debate centuries after the term came to be.
51.The word “overlap” in Paragraph 3 probably indicates ____.
A.the knowledge people put together from different inquiries
B.the distinction between the ancestry of “story” and “history”
C.the meaning and use both “story” and “history” shared
D.the dividing line between tales and records of events
52.The distinction between “history” and “story” is still messier today because ____.
A.people often feel reluctant to tell a true story in a factual way
B.different sides of stories fall into different categories too easily
C.people have to tell correct or incorrect stories against their will
D.sometimes it is very hard to distinguish between fact and fiction
53.The invention of “herstory” reveals that _____.
A.history can be plainly interpreted as “his story”
B.feminists didn’t know about the origins of “history”
C.women should decide what to be written in history
D.history is something made as a one-sided story
54.Which in the following is the best title?
A.These Are the Characteristics of the Word “History”
B.This Is Where the Word “History” Comes From
C.How do “History”, “Story” and “Herstory” Differ?
D.History Doesn’t Always Tell All the Truth to Us
55.The passage is meant to ________.
A.discuss the origin and meaning of the word “history”
B.point out the problems with the way history is taught
C.show that history is often influenced by personal biases
D.emphasize the importance of knowing the true meaning of words
I am a Grade 11 student, and all my peers are obsessed with the future. 9 out of 10 conversations with my friends are about universities, dream jobs, or what we want to pursue after high school. My laptop is already plastered with stickers from universities I don’t know if I’ll even apply to yet, and my diary is filled with more notes about grades for admissions than personal thoughts. My best friend and I have already planned the fantasy apartment that we’ll rent together if we get into the same university.
However, I recently found that keeping my mind on the future is preventing me from living in the present. I selected courses I had absolutely no interest in just to boost my average. I found myself doing schoolwork with the intention of getting good grades for university admissions. At one time, I had thought of high school as nothing more than a highway to transport me from childhood to adulthood. I felt that way until last month when I attended my school’s semi-formal dance
As I danced with 200 sweaty teenagers in the venue, I felt a feeling I hadn’t felt for a long time: I was present, and we were all present. I wasn’t worried about my future because that wasn’t relevant at that moment. All that mattered was that we were young. We all lost ourselves in teenage bliss (幸福) on the dance floor without a single thought of our futures in our heads. What a wonderful feeling adolescence is.
That night changed everything. I understand now that high school is more than just a pathway to adulthood. High school is a rightful destination of its own. Ever since I’ve been trying to spend every second of my life living in the moment. Every time I catch myself going down the mental rabbit hole of the future, I take a step back and recenter myself. Instead of thinking years into my career, I try to think just one day at a time. Since my semi-formal, I’ve lived my life as an adolescent, not an adult-to-be.
56.Why did the author select courses he disliked?(no more than 5 words)
57.What did the author use to think of high school?(no more than 10 words)
58.What does the underlined phrase mean in Paragraph 4?(no more than 2 words)
59.What’s the author’s new attitude towards high school?(no more than 10 words)

根据LOOK AFTER YOURSELF部分的“As a choice consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen, where you can cook. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O'Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile…(作为一种选择,你可以考虑租一套可以自己做饭、自己做饭的公寓。

由第二段中的“The gadgets should make it easy for people to detect illness long before it strikes and so seek treatment far earlier than normal.”(这些小器械应该能让人们在疾病发作之前很早就发现疾病,从而比正常人更早地寻求治疗),可知小器械能帮助人尽快发现疾病。故选D项。
由第六段中的“A portable communication aid could recognize certain phrases and tones and let you know when you are about to lose your temper. The software would also suggest ways of keeping your cool.”(一个便携式通讯工具可以识别某些短语和音调,并让你知道什么时候你要发脾气。 故选A项。
由最后一段“Researchers are still struggling, however, with making the technology cheap and simple enough for the household user. That is going to be the difficult part.”(然而,研究人员仍在努力使这项技术对家庭用户来说足够便宜和简单。

根据第一段“According to reports, three-quarters of all crops around the world depend on pollinating (授粉的) insects like bees and butterflies. By pollinating, pollinators enable the production of seeds. Without them, crop farming can become extremely difficult or costly threatening food supplies and prices globally.(据报道,世界上四分之三的作物依赖于蜜蜂和蝴蝶等授粉昆虫。通过授粉,传粉者使种子得以产生。没有它们,农作物种植就会变得极其困难或成本高昂,威胁到全球的粮食供应和价格)”可知,第一段想要展示的是传粉者的重要性。故选B。
47.推理判断题。根据第二段“Research has shown a rapid and consistent decline in pollinator populations. Average butterfly populations have almost halved since 1991 and bee populations in particular face a sharp decline. Given the world’s growing dependence on these insects, we can only expect the problem to worsen if no action is taken.(研究表明,传粉者的数量正在迅速而持续地下降。自1991年以来,蝴蝶的平均数量几乎减少了一半,蜜蜂的数量尤其面临急剧下降。考虑到世界对这些昆虫的日益依赖,如果不采取行动,我们只能预计问题会恶化)”可知,作者对于传粉者减少这一趋势表示担忧。故选D。
48.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Much has been written about how intensive farming practices the use of chemical pesticides (杀虫剂), and pollution are threatening the survival of these helpful insects. To add to the already critical situation, global warming is contributing significantly to the rapid disappearance of pollinators.(关于集约化耕作、化学农药的使用和污染如何威胁到这些有益昆虫的生存,已经写了很多文章。雪上加霜的是,全球变暖严重加剧了传粉者的迅速消失)”和第四段“Climate change is a major threat to pollinators, with rising temperatures and increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events affecting the food sources and habitats, on which pollinators depend for their survival.(气候变化是传粉者面临的主要威胁,气温上升以及极端天气事件的频率和强度增加,影响了传粉者赖以生存的食物来源和栖息地)”可知,3-4段主要介绍了传粉者数量下降的原因。故选B。
根据第五段“A study has found that climate change has shifted plants’ blooming to earlier times and caused certain plants to move to higher areas, resulting in a decline in pollination.(一项研究发现,气候变化使植物的开花时间提前,并导致某些植物向更高的地区迁移,导致授粉减少)”和第六段“Another study has found that climate change could lead to a decline in the quality of nectar, which is the main food source for many pollinators.(另一项研究发现,气候变化可能导致花蜜质量下降,而花蜜是许多传粉昆虫的主要食物来源)”可知,这两项研究发现了气候变化极大地影响了授粉。故选A。
根据最后一段“We must at least minimize, if not prevent, the usage of pesticides, since these chemicals are harmful to pollinators and can have a far-reaching effect on pollination as a whole.(我们必须至少尽量减少农药的使用,因为这些化学品对传粉者有害,并可能对整个传粉过程产生深远的影响)”可知,帮助传粉者的建议包括减少农药的使用。故选B。
51.C 52.D 53.D 54.D 55.A
根据划线单词前一句“The words story and history share much of their ancestry (故事(story)和历史(history)这两个词有很多共同的渊源)”和下一句“The working out of distinction has taken centuries.(区分已经花了几个世纪的时间。)”
根据文章第四段“The distinction is still messier than that, of course. Plenty of stories like the story of a person’s life or a "true story" on which a less-true film is based -are supposed to be factual. And plenty of stories go against easy categorization one way or the other.(当然,区别仍然比这更复杂。很多故事,比如一个人的生活故事,或者一部不太真实的电影所依据的“真实故事”,都应该是真实的。很多故事都以这样或那样的方式违背了简单的分类。)”可知,区分历史和故事仍然很混乱,因为很多故事被认为是真实的,但也有很多故事不容易归类为事实或虚构。故选D。
53.细节理解题。根据文章第六段“That is why feminists, for example, rejected the word history and championed the notion of herstory during the 1970s to point out the fact that history has mostly come from a male perspective.(这就是为什么女权主义者在20世纪70年代拒绝使用“history”这个词,并支持“历史故事”的概念,以指出历史主要来自男性视角的事实。)”
根据文章第五段“As the linguistic divide has evolved since the Middle Ages, we have come to expect more from history -that it be free from the imperfections of viewpoint and selective memory that stories so often contain. Yet it isn’t, humans being the imperfect creatures and history being something that is made rather than handed down from some all-knowing writer.(自中世纪以来,随着语言鸿沟的演变,我们开始对历史有了更多的期望,希望它能摆脱故事中经常包含的观点和选择性记忆的不完善。但事实并非如此,人类是不完美的生物,历史是创造出来的,而不是某个无所不知的作家传下来的。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述的是历史只是单方面制作的故事,并不总是陈述了事实。故选D。
55.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“The short version is that the term history has evolved from an ancient Greek verb that means “to know”. The Greek word historia originally meant inquiry, the act of seeking knowledge, as well as the knowledge that results from inquiry. And from there it’s a short jump to the accounts of events that a person might put together from making inquiries-what we might call stories.(简而言之,“历史”一词是从一个古希腊动词演变而来的,意思是“知道”。希腊单词historia最初的意思是探究,探求知识的行为,以及探究所产生的知识。从这里,我们可以快速跳到一个人通过调查拼凑起来的事件的叙述——我们可以称之为故事。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讨论了“history”一词的起源和含义。故选A。
56.To boost his average. 57.Nothing more than a highway to adulthood. 58.Overthinking. 59.High school is more than a pathway. 60.My unforgettable moment in high school was winning the championship in the school basketball tournament. It was an exciting moment for me and my teammates.
根据第二段“I selected courses I had absolutely no interest in just to boost my average.(我选择了我完全不感兴趣的课程,只是为了提高我的平均成绩)”可知,作者选择了他不喜欢的课程是为了提高他的平均成绩。 To boost his average.
根据第二段“At one time, I had thought of high school as nothing more than a highway to transport me from childhood to adulthood.(有一段时间,我认为高中只不过是一条把我从童年带到成年的高速公路)”可知,作者过去对高中的看法是只不过是一条高速公路带自己走向成年。 Nothing more than a highway to adulthood.
根据后文“Instead of thinking years into my career, I try to think just one day at a time.(我试着一次只考虑一天,而不是考虑我职业生涯的几年)”可知,作者一次只考虑一天的事,所以之前应是过度思考了,所以推知rabbit hole应是“过度思考”之意,和overthinking意思相近。
根据最后一段“That night changed everything. I understand now that high school is more than just a pathway to adulthood. High school is a rightful destination of its own.(那一夜改变了一切。我现在明白了高中不仅仅是通往成年的道路。高中有它自己的归宿)”可知,作者对高中的新态度是高中不仅仅是一条道路。故答案为High school is more than a pathway.
My unforgettable moment in high school was winning the championship in the school basketball tournament. It was an exciting moment for me and my teammates.
