Street artists have the unique ability to turn the entire world into their canvas (画布). Artist David Zinn’s work is no different, as he masterfully uses his natural environment to bring his delightful creations to life.
Depending on the seasonal conditions around him, Zinn combines his character-filled chalk drawings with fallen leaves and more permanent landscape features, including rocks and sidewalk cracks.
Zinn’s drawings remind people of children’s book illustrations and often feature animals with adorable look. Even though he draws a variety of creatures, his art does feature some recurring (多次再现的) characters—including Sluggo, a tiny green animal; Philomena, a flying pig; and Nadine, a small but brave mouse.
Zinn chooses to draw his creations onto staircases, streetlamps, and other fixtures of urban life besides the flat sidewalks. The artist also uses optical illusions (视觉错觉) in his work, providing the appearance of bottomless chasms (大裂口) or holes in sidewalks for his characters to climb in or out of.
Zinn has been making characteristic chalk art around Ann Arbor, Michigan, since 1987. However, his drawings have attractive sidewalks all over the world.
Due to the materials that he uses and the fact that his art is often located in high-trafficked locations, all of Zinn’s chalk drawings are temporary, only lasting for as long as nature allows them to. However, this contributes to their uniqueness, as no two drawings will ever be the exact same.
In order to be viewed, Zinn’s work also forces people to look down and pay attention to the environment around them, which is more and more difficult in our ever-changing and increasingly connected world. However, his colorful creatures encourage people to stop and smell the roses, and find something lovely.
4.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A.Zinn is completely different from other street artists. B.The environment is part of Zinn’s drawings.
C.Zinn draws on sidewalks only in autumn. D.Flowers are the focus of Zinn’s works.
5.What can be learned from paragraph 3?
A.Zinn likes drawing lovely animals. B.Zinn only draws three characters.
C.Sluggo is a flying pig. D.Nadine is Zinn’s favourite character.
6.Which of the following best describes Zinn’s drawings?
A.Cheap but boring. B.Attractive but expensive.
C.Popular but meaningless. D.Temporary but creative.
7.What does Zinn’s work remind people to do according to the last paragraph?
A.Stay close to people around. B.Appreciate the beauty around us.
C.Buy roses on the way home. D.Face difficulties in our life.
4.B 5.A 6.D 7.B
根据第一段“Artist David Zinn’s work is no different, as he masterfully uses his natural environment to bring his delightful creations to life.(艺术家David Zinn的作品也不例外,因为他巧妙地利用自然环境将他令人愉快的创作带入生活)”可知,环境是津恩绘画的一部分。故选B。
根据第三段“Zinn’s drawings remind people of children’s book illustrations and often feature animals with adorable look. Even though he draws a variety of creatures, his art does feature some recurring (多次再现的) characters—including Sluggo, a tiny green animal; Philomena, a flying pig; and Nadine, a small but brave mouse.(津恩的画让人想起儿童读物的插图,经常以可爱的动物为特色。尽管他画了各种各样的生物,但他的作品中确实有一些反复出现的角色——包括一只绿色的小动物斯拉格;飞猪菲洛梅娜;还有纳丁,一只小而勇敢的老鼠)”可知,津恩喜欢画可爱的动物。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Due to the materials that he uses and the fact that his art is often located in high-trafficked locations, all of Zinn’s chalk drawings are temporary, only lasting for as long as nature allows them to. However, this contributes to their uniqueness, as no two drawings will ever be the exact same.(由于他使用的材料和他的艺术作品经常位于交通繁忙的地方,津恩所有的粉笔画都是暂时的,只有在自然允许的情况下才能持续。然而,这有助于它们的独特性,因为没有两幅画是完全相同的)”可推知,津恩的绘画短暂但有创意。故选D。
7.细节理解题。根据最后一段“In order to be viewed, Zinn’s work also forces people to look down and pay attention to the environment around them, which is more and more difficult in our ever-changing and increasingly connected world. However, His colorful creatures encourage people to stop and smell the roses, and find something lovely.(为了被观看,津恩的作品也迫使人们低头关注周围的环境,这在我们这个不断变化和联系日益紧密的世界中越来越困难。然而,他五彩缤纷的生物鼓励人们停下来闻闻玫瑰,发现一些可爱的东西)”可知,津恩的作品提醒人们做要欣赏我们身边的美。故选B。

What does a 450-million-year old land plant have to do with waking you up for work in the morning? Unless you’re sleeping on a forest floor, we’d say not a whole lot. Moss (苔藓) Echo is out to change all that, bringing ancient nature into the modern home in a rather clever little device.
The Moss Echo has actual moss growing on it. But it’s not just a mini garden; it’s a handy home device that keeps time, works as an alarm clock and includes a Bluetooth speaker, with an LED display that’s programmed through a smartphone app. Moss sits on a replaceable moss filter (过滤器), which surrounds the network of LED bulbs (灯泡). Besides, Moss Echo has been created by its team to act as a powerful purifier (净化器), with the plant’s tiny leaf-like structures—called phyllids—taking in pollutants and then releasing clean air back into the environment. It also comes with plenty of nature-themed features, like a sleep mode that plays relaxing sounds of the great outdoors to help you drift off, and an alarm clock that’ll wake you up in an equally gentle way.
For anyone who has experienced a moss takeover in the garden, you’ll know that these plants are extremely adaptable. The moss here can survive for six months without water, but we don’t recommend preventing your little air-quality helpers from a drink; the creators suggest giving it a spritz (喷) a couple of times a day.
However, if your brown thumb does strike, makers Moss Lab have replacement filters that click into the device’s frame (框), for an additional cost. If watered, even irregularly, the moss should stay happy and healthy for many years. There are some personalizing add-ons, like switching up the look with different wood and metal frames, for an additional price.
The Moss Echo is available for US$179, which is 40% off expected retail. Included in the pack is a white or black unit, USB-C cable and a sleek water spray bottle.
8.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Moss Echo?
A.Its size. B.Its functions. C.Its price. D.Its structure.
9.Which of the following helps Moss Echo to act as a purifier?
A.Phyllids. B.The network of LED bulbs.
C.The moss filter. D.The Bluetooth speaker.
10.What can we infer about the moss from paragraph 3?
A.It only lives for 6 months. B.It is easy to survive.
C.It adapts to the environment slowly. D.It doesn’t need watering.
11.What can we learn about Moss Echo?
A.It costs more than US$200.
B.It offers wood and metal frames for free.
C.It helps to improve your gardening skills.
D.It combines nature with modern technology.

Are you one of those people who, when you have a cappuccino or tea in a café, immediately write a review about it on Google? Some of us tend to write about every single experience. It doesn't matter how small they may be: buying a book, taking a train trip, going to the hairdresser...
These messages and scores that describe our experiences provide information to other people. The phenomenon (现象) shows that we live in a society extremely fond of labels (标签). It seems we've learned to live our lives guided by reviews and comments on social media, by “likes”, and by the number of stars awarded to a product or a person.
However, are we taking it to the extreme? The delusion (错觉) of hyper-valuation (高估) is the tendency for any product, experience, situation, or person to be the object of numerical (数字的) labeling. In fact, something as simple as having a coffee or reading a book, now requires you to make the effort and translate that experience into a score of one, two, or even five yellow stars.
Social media and the delusion of hyper-valuation have introduced the idea to you that everything must be perfect. You seek the best experience. The ideal person. The dream service.
For example, you want your coffee to take you to the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. You want the hotel pillow you sleep on to be as soft as silk and the taxi you take to have the shiniest wheels. Only then will you give the service five stars and a good review.
The idea that you're going to value everything about the experience when it ends forces you to live it through the filter (滤镜) of analysis and judgment. It leads you, sooner or later, to feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction. Because sometimes, the coffee might be cold and bitter, but it's not the end of the world.
Indeed, imperfection is a part of life and it has its own certain charm.
12.What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A.Bad behavior in public places. B.Lack of communication between friends.
C.Impatience with service in a café. D.Addiction to sharing review s on social media.
13.Why does the author mention the examples in paragraph 5?
A.To show overly high expectations. B.To provide practical solutions.
C.To present positive reviews. D.To list good services.
14.What's the author's attitude towards imperfection?
A.Acceptable. B.Negative. C.Uncertain. D.Doubtful.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Development of social media B.Necessity of numerical labeling
C.Delusion of hyper-evaluation D.Popularity of e-mail messages
12.D 13.A 14.A 15.C
根据文章第一段“Are you one of those people who, when you have a cappuccino or tea in a café, immediately write a review about it on Google? Some of us tend to write about every single experience. It doesn't matter how small they may be: buying a book, taking a train trip, going to the hairdresser...”(当你在咖啡馆里喝了一杯卡布奇诺或茶,你是那种立刻在谷歌上写一篇评论的人吗?
根据文章第五段“For example, you want your coffee to take you to the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. You want the hotel pillow you sleep on to be as soft as silk and the taxi you take to have the shiniest wheels. Only then will you give the service five stars and a good review.”(例如,你希望你的咖啡能带你去罗马的西班牙广场。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Indeed, imperfection is a part of life and it has its own certain charm.”(事实上,不完美是生活的一部分,它有自己的魅力。) 故选A。
通读全文且根据第三段“The delusion (错觉) of hyper-valuation (高估) is the tendency for any product, experience, situation, or person to be the object of numerical (数字的) labeling.”(高估的错觉是指任何产品、经历、情况或人都倾向于成为数字标签的对象。)

While writing, we may always ask ourselves “Are there any better expressions to convey what we mean?” In a writing class, a teacher tells a golden rule of writing.
Teacher: Show but don’t tell, class. This is the golden rule of creative writing. You need to show the reader (the person who is reading) what you want to say, not tell him, or her.
David (student): 36 ? Writing is about words, right? We can only tell things using words. How can we show them? We’re not painters!
Teacher: Stop laughing, everybody, and listen carefully. I’ll give you two examples: ‘He was feeling very worried.’ Now I will say the same thing in a different way: ‘He was biting his fingernails and sweating.’ 37 ? Which part shows the reader how he was feeling?
Anne(student):The second example, the one about the fingernails and the sweating. 38
Teacher: Yes! Excellent! Well done, Anne. You’re a brilliant student.
David: I don’t understand.
Teacher: And here, everybody, we see a very good example of both showing and telling. Not only has David told us that he doesn’t understand, he’s also shown us: with that silly look on his face. 39 Well done!
David: Stop laughing! It’s not funny! Be quiet, Anne!
Teacher: David! Don’t shout at Anne. She’s done nothing wrong. Now, everybody, let’s play a game: 40 . OK? Right, let’s go. ‘She was very sad.’ Now, who’d like to speak out your sentence?
A.This is showing
B.A lovely example
C.Why not try doing it
D.But how do we do that
E.I’ll tell you something and you have to say it in a different way
F.Now, which example tells the reader about how the man was feeling
G.Look and decide which ‘tell’ sentence matches which ‘show’ sentence

故填where。
故填from。
故填To be。
故填the。
故填adapts/has adapted。

I was 10 years old when I asked my mum for piano lessons. She was recently laid off due to the economic downturn. She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I Googled the dimensions of a keyboard, drew the keys on to a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. After a while I could hear the notes in my head while pressing the keys on the paper. I spent six months playing scales and chord sequences without touching a real piano. When my mum saw what I did, she borrowed some money from family and friends, and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how organic the sound of the piano was, as I had become familiar with the artificial electronic sound. The teacher tried to explain where middle C was but I could already play all the major and minor scales, as well as tonic and dominant functions.
I took the first grade piano test after eight lessons and got distinction. By the time I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again, so I returned to my paper keyboard. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
When the head of music at my school knowing my experience, he said I could practice on the school’s grand piano. I would wake up at 5: 30 am to get there in time and play until lessons started. I’d forgo lunch and then practice after school until the caretaker kicked me out. At home, I’d have dinner, do one hour of revision, and then mental practice until 11 p. m.

One evening, when I was about 12, I came home, and my mum said she had a surprise for me. I was expecting a chocolate bar, but it was a real piano, bought with more money borrowed from friends. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was expecting to hear a simple song but I played a piece called Elegy: In Autumn; she was in shock. And I could see that tears were rolling in her eyes as she hurried to fetch my dad from his room and almost pushed him into the sofa. “Just listen,” she said.
My dad was very much against me playing, but when he heard that piece, something inside him changed. He’d wanted me to study medicine. But it seemed that from that moment on, he hardened my determination to keep playing. And it turned out that my dad was such a music lover. He would always drop everything he was doing whenever he heard the sound of the piano keys. “I can see in your eyes your passion for the piano, so if you do love playing it, play like no one else would.” These words meant a lot to me.

A.Cheap but boring. B.Attractive but expensive.
C.Popular but meaningless. D.Temporary but creative.
7.What does Zinn’s work remind people to do according to the last paragraph?
A.Stay close to people around. B.Appreciate the beauty around us.
C.Buy roses on the way home. D.Face difficulties in our life.
