So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson, 15, from Connecticut, USA, recently made history when she became the youngest black female ever accepted into an American university! “I’m proud of myself for getting in, but I usually find it hard to get excited. It is pretty cool, I guess,” said Abigail. Her mother, Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby, born two weeks late on Christmas Day. She didn’t speak her first words until she was 22 months old. Nancy and her husband thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk, it was with perfect speech. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn’t know at the time that she was learning all of it. Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At the age of six, she was in the fourth grade; at eight, she began taking classes at an International Baccalaureate (国际中学毕业会考) program, and at ten, she took her first high school class in math. She has studied several languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German. Abigail says that she doesn’t usually plan when she studies. She considers herself scatterbrained. And she always delays things up to the last minute — this, she says, gives her the motivation to really do something. In her free time, Abigail plays hockey and basketball, browses the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends (they are all 17 and 18 years old). She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail’s music lessons have helped her to be a normal teen. She believes that Abigail needs to be in a situation where she has to fail in order to learn. “She finds playing the piano to be very difficult, but it has made her learn better,” said Nancy. “She can’t always be successful, or she won’t learn anything! People always learn more from their failures than from their successes.” 24. Abigail spoke her first word when she was ______. A. 15 months old B. 22 months old C. 17 months old D. 18 months old 25. Why does Abigail’s mother think learning to play the piano is good for Abigail? A. Because Abigail can make new friends. B. Because Abigail can learn something from failure. C. Because Abigail can learn to play a musical instrument. D. Because Abigail can be motivated and do things quickly. 26. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Almost all of Abigail’s classmates are older than her. B. Abigail’s parents read very difficult stories to her in order to make her a genius. C. Abigail started taking classes at an International Baccalaureate program at the age of ten. D. Abigail made history because she became the youngest ever to enter an American university. 27. Which of the following titles is the most suitable for the article? A. Roads to Success B. Universities in America C. Abigail — a Genius Girl D. Difficulty of Making Mistakes C Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach! For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks. Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So, bringing sand-digging tools — like a shovel (铁铲) — and a bucket is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! And that brings us to today’s expression: “bringing sand to the beach.” “Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile. This means serving no purpose. To brings and to the beach can also mean overkill. Overkill means to door have more than what is necessary or useful. Often when using this expression, we say “like”. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach. We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant.” With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant). 28. What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 2? A. Activities on a beach trip. B. Necessary things for an enjoyable beach trip. C. Pleasure enjoyed on a beach. D. Ways to make a trip comfortable. 29. What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Useless. B. Common. C. Dangerous. D. Meaningful. 30. What does the author think of the flowers brought to the opening of a flower store? A. They are sweet. B. They are proper gifts. C. They are not good enough. D. They are not needed there. 31. Which saying has the similar meaning to “bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”? A. Seeing is believing. B. Killing two birds with one stone. C. Teaching a fish how to swim. D. Thinking twice before you jump. D Cows produce much methane (甲烷), the world’s second worst greenhouse gas, as they break down the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed (海藻) to their food. Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood (罩), which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They used a small amount of seaweed, which they mixed with the cows’ food. The results were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given. Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane. Over the five months, the scientists didn’t see any signs that the cows* stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What’s more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows. But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there’s not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there’s no chance to feed them seaweed every day. Still, it’s very good news that something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis. 32. Why did the researchers carry out the study? A. To improve the cows’ welfare. B. To test the effects of the seaweed, C. To measure the amount of methane produced by cows. D. To discover healthier grass to reduce the pollution from cows. 33. What’s the third paragraph mainly about? A. The results of the study. B. The process of the research. C. The content of the experiment. D. The information of the subjects. 34. What is the biggest challenge in the researchers’ opinion? A. Seaweed is pretty rare in the world. B. It’s hard to mix seaweed with grass. C. Cows fed with seaweed gained weight easily. D. Cows can hardly have daily access to seaweed. 35. What is the author’s attitude towards the findings? A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Positive. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 There are plenty of ways that you can practice English all by yourself! B She was walking at eight months and completing 100-piece jigsaw puzzles at 15 months. So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson,15,from Connecticut,USA,recently made history when she became the youngest black female ever accepted into an American university!"I'm proud of myself for getting in,but I usually find it hard to get excited. It is pretty cool,I guess,"said Abigail. Her mother,Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby, born two weeks late on Christmas Day.She didn't speak her first words until she was 22 months old.Nancy and her husband thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk,it was with perfect speech. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn't know at the time that she was learning all of it. Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At the age of six,she was in the fourth grade; at eight,,she began taking classes at an International Baccalaureate(▣际中学毕业会考)program, and at ten, she took her first high school class in math. She has studied several languages, including Spanish,French, Chinese,Russian,Arabic and German. Abigail says that she doesn't usually plan when she studies. She considers herself scatterbrained. And she always delays things up to the last minute-this,she says, gives her the motivation to really do something. In her free time,Abigail plays hockey and basketball, browses the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends(they are all 17 and 18 years old). She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail's 高一英语第4页共11页 music lessons have helped her to be a normal teen. She believes that Abigail needs to be in a situation where she has to fail in order to learn."She finds playing the piano to be very difficult, but it has made her learn better,"said Nancy."She can't always be successful,or she won't learn anything!People always learn more from their failures than from their successes." 24.Abigail spoke her first word when she was A.15 months old B.22 months old C.17 months old D.18 months old 25.Why does Abigail's mother think learning to play the piano is good for Abigail? B.Abigail's parents read very difficult stories to her in order to make her a genius. C.Abigail started taking classes at an International Baccalaureate program at the age of ten. D.Abigail made history because she became the youngest ever to enter an American university. 27.Which of the following titles is the most suitable for the article? A.Roads to Success B.Universities in America C.Abigail-a Genius Girl D.Difficulty of Making Mistakes C Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let's go to the beach! For a beach trip,we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example,a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun's powerful rays.Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks. Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So,bringing sand-digging tools-like a shovel )-and a bucket is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that 高一英语第5页共11页 already! And that brings us to today's expression:"bringing sand to the beach." "Bringing sand to the beach"describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile This means serving no purpose. To brings and to the beach can also mean overkill.Overkill means to door have more than what is necessary or useful.Often when using this expression,we say "like".For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach. We usually use"like bringing sand to the beach"when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example,I could also say it is"like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant."With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich)is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant)). 28.What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 2? A.Activities on a beach trip. B.Necessary things for an enjoyable beach trip. C.Pleasure enjoyed on a beach. D.Ways to make a trip comfortable. 29.What does the underlined word"futile"in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Useless. B.Common. C.Dangerous. D.Meaningful. 30.What does the author think of the flowers brought to the opening of a flower store? A.They are sweet. B.They are proper gifts. C.They are not good enough. D.They are not needed there. 31.Which say ing has the similar meaning to"bringing a sandwich to a restaurant"? A.Seeing is believing. B.Killing two birds with one stone. C.Teaching a fish how to swim. D.Thinking twice before you jump. D Cows produce much methane (the world's second worst greenhouse gas,as they break down the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed (to their food. Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to 高一英语第6页共11页 know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They used a small amount of seaweed, which they mixed with the cows'food. The consequences were surprisingly good.In some cases, the cows produced 82%less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given.Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33%less methane.Over the five months, the scientists didn't see any signs that the cows'stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What's more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows. But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there's not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed.A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there's no chance to feed them seaweed every day. Still,as the study shows, something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis. 32.Why did the researchers carry out the study? A.To improve the cows'living conditions. B.To test the effects of the seaweed. C.To measure the amount of methane produced by cows. D.To discover healthier grass to reduce the pollution from cows.. 33.What's the third paragraph mainly about? A.The background of the subjects. B.The process of the research. C.The content of the experiment. D.The results of the study. 34.What is the biggest challenge in the researchers'opinion? A.Seaweed is pretty rare in the world. B.It's hard to mix seaweed with grass. C.Cows can hardly have daily access to seaweed. D.Cows fed with seaweed gained weight easily. 35.What is the author's attitude towards the findings? A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Unclear. D.Negative. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 高一英语第7页共11页 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 There are plenty of ways that you can practice English all by yourself! Describe your actions.Say what you're doing or thinking aloud in English. As you go about your day, imagine you're a character in a book.38 Don't worry about getting everything exactly correct grammatically-just work on expressing yourself and describing actions. For example, you might say,"I'm getting ready to go to work.I see clouds in the sky.39 I'm looking forward to playing soccer later."
