Ricotta was not the only one. Since the care center opened in 2000, workers there have seen many turtles like Ricotta. Some turtles’ injuries (伤害) came from boat strikes and animal bites.
“The best part about my job is that every day is different,” says Grace Buschiazzo, a biologist at the Sea Turtle Care Center. “Whatever the sea turtles need from me, I’m going to do it.” At the age of 15, Buschiazzo volunteered for a project. It helped protect sea turtle eggs. That was when she fell in love with sea turtles.
Buschiazzo recommends that kids can volunteer just like her if they are interested in sea turtles. “You can do it at an aquarium,” she says. “You can also do it at a local animal center. There are lots of ways to help sea turtles.”
Buschiazzo makes the turtles’ meals and makes sure they stay healthy. She does everything she can to help the turtles get better.
Since 2000, the team at the Sea Turtle Care Center has successfully treated and released more than 400 sea turtles. And that’s another thing Buschiazzo loves about her job: getting to see how people save the turtles’ lives and help them go back into the sea.

One of Coca-Cola’s many slogans (标语) was “You can’t beat the real thing”. The company was trying to say that there were a lot of other drinks, but none of them was as good as the “real” Coke.
You may not agree. But when it comes to art scientists in the Netherlands think it’s true—you can’t beat the real thing.
Martin de Munnik, a member of the Neurensis Research (研究) Company, did a research with other members. They invited 20 volunteers to take part in it in the Mauritshuis Museum. Researchers showed five real artworks to them. While they were looking at the artworks, a special machine recorded their brain (大脑) activities.
Then these volunteers needed to look at the pictures of the same five artworks as before. The researchers compared (比较) their brain activities when they were looking at the real artworks and the pictures. The research showed that when volunteers were looking at the real artworks, their emotional responses (情绪反应) were 10 times stronger than those when they were looking at the pictures.
The researchers said the responses were quite different. Real artworks made the brain much more excited than pictures of the same artworks did. The real art caused a strong emotional response in a part of the brain called the precuneus. This part of the brain is about feelings and memories.
Erik Scherder a famous scientist, said the research showed the importance of museums for people of all ages. “It shows what the real artwork does for your brain when you see it closely,” he said. “Museums can make people have such rich feelings that everyone can get a lot from them.”

八、阅读表达(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)

When you think of winter, which word comes to your mind? Cold? Dark? Snow? Ice? When the weather turns terrible, we can stay in warm houses and enjoy nice food, but wild animals may not have this fun. So how do animals spend the long cold winter months?
Some animals make journeys to warmer places once a year. We call this migration. They sometimes travel thousands of miles by land, air, or sea to reach their winter home. Small monarch butterflies travel from all over the country to spend their winters in Mexico. Caribous (北美驯鹿) have one of the longest land migrations, travelling over 2,000 miles! But not all migrations are as long as the examples. Some birds make shorter migrations from high mountains to lower lands to find better places with less snow and more food. This type of migration is about changes in height.
If winter makes you want to sleep, you’re not alone. Some animals hibernate for part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. There are a few different types of hibernation. For example, a bear will eat a lot of food to build up fat reserves. During hibernation, its body temperature drops, and its heart beats more slowly. A bear’s heartbeat may drop from around 55 beats per minute to just 9 beats. The bear can sleep for months without eating or drinking, using its fat for energy.
Instead of going to warmer places or sleeping through the winter, some animals spend the winter by changing bodies with seasons. Some animals may grow a thicker and warmer winter coat. Some other animals change the colour of their fur. For example, the snowshoe rabbits are usually brown in summer, but they change the colour of their fur into the colour of snow in winter for better hiding.
What about you? Will your mind, body or action change in the wintertime? Do you go to a warmer place for holiday or just stay at your comfortable home? Or maybe you really enjoy taking part in some outdoor activities in winter. No matter how you like to spend the winter, spring is just around the corner.
51. How far do caribous travel to spend the winter?

52. Why do some birds migrate to lower lands?

In October 2023, volunteers sent a small green sea turtle to the Sea Turtle Care Center at an aquarium (水族馆) in South Carolina. The turtle, Ricotta, got trapped in a fishing line, and lost a front flipper (鳍). People found more fishing lines in the turtle’s body.

But when it comes to art, scientists in the Netherlands think it’s true—you can’t beat the real thing.
Erik Scherder, a famous scientist, said the research showed the importance of museums for people of all ages. “It shows what the real artwork does for your brain when you see it closely,” he said. “Museums can make people have such rich feelings that everyone can get a lot from them.”
