While community service isn’t required for your college applications, showing that you care about others is nothing but positive during the college admissions (准许进入) process.
Hospitals and Nursing Homes
Hospitals and nursing homes are ideal volunteer opportunities for those who have t the ambition to become doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. You probably can't work directly with patients. You might deliver meals, do data entry, change sheets, or help out around the office.
Animal Shelters
Students who love animals may be interested in volunteering at an animal shelter. Work may involve any number of activities. You might play with the animals, walk dogs, or bottle-feed young cats. Don’t expect it to be all exciting; you will likely be expected to help with cleaning, too.
Food Banks and Soup Kitchens
Food banks, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters are often looking for volunteers to help prepare and serve food. Some may have age restrictions, such as a rule that no one under 18 can work directly with residents or visitors, but you can probably do behind-the-scenes preparation, run a canned goods drive, or prepare food. Just check with the volunteer coordinator (协调员) .
Parks and Beaches
Helping out at a local park or beach could appeal to outdoorsy types, people who care about the environment, or students who plan to pursue majors or careers in environmental science or engineering, biology, and other related fields. Some parks and beaches might have established programs in which you could participate, or you might initiate (发起) a beach or park cleanup.

Solo travel, or traveling alone, wasn’t considered safe, ideal or fashionable for Indian women 25 years ago. But that didn’t stop Dr. Sudha Mahalingam. When she followed her husband on his work trips abroad, she used the opportunities to make her adventurous trips.
Two decades ago, Mahalingam quit her job in mainstream print journalism and switched careers to take up energy research. Soon after, she started receiving invitations to speak at international conferences in oil producing countries and the world of travel opened up to her. Today, at 70, she has visited 66 countries across six continents, which she shares on her blog Footloose Indian as well as in her book The Travel Gods Must Be Crazy.
Owing to a busy schedule of managing work and family, Mahalingam often had no time to organize her travel, so most of her early trips were sudden and unplanned. She landed in the Czech Republic without a valid (有效的) visa, faced the challenge of finding vegetarian food in China, got accidentally locked in a museum in Iran and was caught without proof of a yellow fever vaccination (疫苗接种) at the airport in Nairobi, Kenya.
Though Mahalingam sometimes travels with friends, most of her journeys are solo. Her most recent international adventure that stands out was her trip to Borneo in Southeast Asia. “There were crawlies (爬虫) everywhere and fallen leaves as high as one meter. You put your foot and won’t know if a snake would stick itself around your leg or whether a poisonous insect would bite you. It was pouring all the time. I have been to the Amazon rainforest as well but it was a cakewalk compared to Borneo,” she says.
Mahalingam has been addicted to different adventure sports too, including diving and hang-gliding. She also made a difficult journey to Everest base camp and, at the age of 66, went skydiving in Uluru, Australia.
4. What did Mahalingam do 25 years ago?
A. She followed her husband to India. B. She gave lectures on print journalism.
C. She began traveling to other countries. D. She managed to keep family-work balance.
5. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By describing a process. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
6. Why did Mahalingam mention the Amazon rainforest in paragraph 4?
A. To highlight the hardship of her Borneo trip,
B. To prove the wide extent of Mahalingam’s travels.
C. To emphasize the importance of the Amazon rainforest.
D. To tell the differences between Borneo and the Amazon rainforest.
7. Which of the following best describes Mahalingam?
A. Creative. B. Courageous. C. Considerate. D. Demanding.

The laughing patterns of human babies are consistent with those of great apes (类人猿), according to a study published Tuesday in Biology Letters.
“Human adults primarily laugh while exhaling (呼气), but babies and great apes laugh during both inhalation (吸气) and exhalation,” said study author Mariska Kret, associate professor of psychology at Leiden University in the Netherlands. “First adults inhale, then produce ‘ha-ha-ha’ sounds in short bursts, starting loud and then fading away,” Kret said. “The ape-type is more difficult to describe but there is an alternation ‘huh-ha-huh-ha’,” she added.
Kret originally discovered this phenomenon while attending a talk by famous expert Jan Van Hooff with a friend. When Jan Van Hooff said apes laugh during inhalation and exhalation, Kret’s friend showed a video of her baby laughing in the same manner.
To test whether babies laugh like apes, Kret recorded the laughing of babies 3~8 months old and asked listeners to rate what percentage of the laugh was produced by inhaling and exhaling. To make comparison, researchers also included five parts of adults laughing. After two rounds including at least 100 listeners each, the results were in. People could tell that babies laughed both while inhaling and exhaling, but adults mainly laughed by exhaling. To ensure the results were accurate, Kret had expert listeners analyze the sound bites, and their findings aligned with those of the earlier listeners.
“Laughter produced by exhaling tends to be louder and more expressive,” Kret noted, which she said makes it easier for babies to express their happy feelings.
Older babies in the study also produced more exhaling laughter than younger ones. “This could be because, as babies grow up, they learn the communicative function of it, and parents see that the baby is actively trying to make something clear,” Kret said. She was surprised to see that the airflow associated with the laughter changes as the babies grew older. In future research, Kret said she hopes to repeat her experiment with other vocalizations (发声) such as crying.
8. What inspired Kret to carry out the study?
A. The conversation with Jan Van Hooff. B. Her observation of apes.
C. The video from her friend. D. Her baby’s laughing.
9. What does the underlined phrase “aligned with” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Defeated. B. Disappointed. C. Inspired. D. Matched.
10. What is the unexpected result to Kret about babies?
A. The way of communication. B. The changes of laughter patterns.
C. The special features of their breathing. D. The rapid speed of their growth.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce research findings. B. To promote a childcare program.
C. To honor a woman professor. D. To illustrate a study method.
D
Mention the 1970s and most people will have an opinion. It was mixed up with memories of strikes, power cuts and bombs in London. Go deeper and there were plenty of pubs, televisions limited to three channels, and cinema chains that often changed their programs twice weekly, or had late night screenings. Best of all, though, was live music.
Every town had its established site for touring bands but London enjoyed a large number of smaller locations that hosted rock, folk or jazz acts several nights a week. Many of these were Irish owned or managed, and part of a tradition where providing live music was part and parcel (主要) of running a pub. In fact, there were an awful lot of bands and singers you could see on a regular basis within 25 miles of London. Even better, you can go to many of the smaller sites for free.
The concentration of so much of this in such a small geographical area was a comparatively recent development and can be traced to the impact the 1973 oil price hike had on the record industry.
Against the background of the strikes and power cuts that everyone experienced, would-be rock stars found that touring up and down the UK in a truck and breakfast suddenly became expensive. It was hardly surprising that bands concentrated on sites closer to home to lower travel and accommodation costs.
There were other factors at work too. It’s worth remembering that the London of the 1970s was a city with a steadily decreasing population. There were many empty houses as well as local authority flats that were “hard to let”, and commercial space too, which meant plenty of recording and rehearsing (排练) studios.
12. Why is the first paragraph written?
A. To introduce the topic of discussion. B. To reveal the setting of a story.
C. To explain a phenomenon in question, D. To provide evidence for a point of view.
13. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Each town had its own music band. B. Irish jazz music was the most popular.
C. Music styles varied from area to area. D. Live music was performed in many pubs.
14. Why did many bands in the 1970s choose sites closer to their homes?
A. To reduce travel and accommodation costs. B. To contribute to local entertainment industry.
C. To take advantage of the cultural environment. D. To avoid being affected by strikes and power cuts.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Live Music B. Live Music and the 1973 Oil Hike
C. London’s Live Music in the 1970s D. Pub Culture Giving Rise to Live Music

We were all sitting around enjoying another beautiful day of sunshine and warm weather when my brother, Tim, was struck with an idea. “Why don’t we go for a boat ride this afternoon on Lake Bitabee?” This idea met with general approval from Arlene, his wife, and me. But Dad wanted to spend the afternoon fishing.
After lunch, Arlene and I got into Tim's car and Tim put the boat on the trailer (拖车) and drove off. Dad followed behind in the other car, having decided to fish on Lake Victoria - which lay a few hundred yards from Lake Bitabee.
When we arrived there, Tim, a more-than-capable driver, sent Arlene and I to down the hill to the water's edge in order to guide him as he backed the boat trailer down the incline (斜坡) and around the small bend. “Tell me when the water is halfway up the back tires, ” he told us.
Then the back of the boat trailer edged itself around the bend, and Arlene and I began waving to Tim, pointing him a little to the right to get him lined up properly. Slowly, little by little, Tim backed down the incline to the relatively flat surface next to the water. We watched as the trailer entered the water, frightening fish and bullfrogs away. Deeper and deeper into the swamp (水洼) went the trailer, until - as Tim said - the water was halfway up the back tires. I shouted out for Tim to stop the car.
My brother threw the car into park and jumped out of the driver's seat, eager to launch the boat into the water. Then I saw that the car was in the deep water, clearly stuck in the mud (淤泥) . Then he got back into the car and started the engine. It stuck fast, the tires whirling (旋转) helplessly around in the muddy water. Shutting off the engine, Tim got out of the vehicle, looking anxious and helpless.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“I'll get Dad,” I tried to comfort him.

First, while AI seems like a convenient source of information, it may undermine our ability to think independently. When we encounter a difficult problem, instead of racking our brains to find solutions, we tend to turn to AI for ready answers, which will be detrimental to the development of our critical thinking skills.
Secondly, AI poses a threat to our academic integrity. Some students may be tempted to use AI to complete their assignments. Once this habit takes root, it not only violates the principles of education but also fails to truly measure our knowledge and abilities.
In conclusion, let’s rely on our own efforts to learn and grow.
Thank you!

【答案】“I’ll get Dad,” I tried to comfort him. Tim nodded, his face pale with worry. I quickly ran up the hill, my heart pounding. When I reached Dad, who was just setting up his fishing gear near Lake Victoria, I explained the situation breathlessly. Dad’s face darkened with concern, but he didn’t waste a moment. Grabbing his tools, he followed me back to the stuck car, his stride determined.
Seeing the car still stuck in the water, Dad went up the hill to his car and drove to a nearby farmhouse. He returned shortly with a sturdy rope and a friendly farmer who agreed to help. Together, they tied the rope to the front of Tim’s car. With the farmer’s truck pulling and Dad guiding, they managed to free the car from the muddy grip of the swamp. Tim sighed with relief as the car finally lurched onto solid ground. We all learned a valuable lesson about the unpredictability of nature and the importance of being prepared.
