While for many a cook, serving up the fanciest and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf
Brand has an extra aim: fighting food waste. He believes that with his dishes, he can have a big
influence on people’s way of thinking about food and food waste.
With 22 years of experience, including Michelin-starred restaurants in London and Amsterdam, he
has seen a lot of food wasted in his career. So what is the best way to prevent this? For him, it really
comes down to one important thing: “Rather than think about what you want to cook, look at the
remainder, what’s available, and then make a menu. This is what every cook should do.”
He’s clear on his solution. “Lose that fanciness, and look at the quality of the product and the
flavor (味道),” Rudolf explains. “There are too many cooks who are trying to make their dish too fancy.
They want to have only the biggest sea fish. Or they make a dish with only the heart of the cabbage,
only using the best leaves, and then they throw away the rest.” He shakes his head at the idea of such
waste.
第 4 页 共 10 页
He knows that one of his suppliers ---a local farm--- is left with a growing food mountain when
top Michelin-starred cooks only buy the prized cuts of meat instead of ordering the whole leg. In just
three or four weeks, the farm is left with 1,000 legs of lamb in the freezer. “And that’s just one supplier,”
he says.
While other cooks will only accept the best ingredients (原料) from their suppliers, if something is
smaller or damaged or has a few black bits, Rudolf is still going to use it. “Just because I’ll accept
produce of a slightly lower quality doesn’t mean I’m going to serve food of a less quality. It’s my job to
turn that into good quality food on the plate,” he says. As a cook, he thinks he has a duty not only to
cook delicious food, but also to reduce food waste.
24. What is Rudolf’s extra goal with his dishes?
A. To create the fanciest meals ever. B. To educate the public on food waste.
C. To encourage people to cook by themselves. D. To get a job in Michelin-starred restaurants.
25. What does Rudolf say about many cooks?
A. They care too much about flavor.
B. They are too choosy about ingredients.
C. They satisfy customers’ needs to the full.
D. They would like to try out new cooking methods.
26. What problem do food suppliers face according to Rudolf?
A. They overproduce greatly. B. They have difficulty winning orders
C. They have many unwanted left materials. D.They fail to store their products properly.
27. Which of the following best describes Rudolf?
A. Influential. B. Excitable. C. Mean. D. Responsible.

The biggest criticism (批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline
friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally
unfounded. Research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that people are not
replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline
relationships.
However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a
hyper-connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make
announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is
negatively affecting not our friendships but our character.
Professor Larry Rosen, in his book iDisorder, says that young people who overuse social
networking sites can become vain, aggressive. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of
our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing ---empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us
together; it allows us to see the world from our friends points of view. Without it, we are far less able to
connect and form meaningful adult relationships.
Sherry Turkle, a professor of Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT, suggests that
第 5 页 共 10 页
people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200
university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to
their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from their family and friends. But
being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is
only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others. She believes, as is the title
of her book, that we are simply “Alone Together”.
These potential changes in our characters are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young
people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to
avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships
that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults.
28. What does the underlined word “unfounded” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Undoubted. B. False. C. Acceptable. D. Illegal.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The advantages of social media outweigh the disadvantages.
B. Young people tend to develop offline friendships.
C. Young people can’t go without social media.
D. We are becoming unable to understand others well.
30. According to Sherry Turkle, how can we make meaningful friendships with others?
A. By getting in touch with online friends.
B. By avoiding the problems of social networking.
C. By reflecting and getting in touch with ourselves.
D. By having discussions with a much more diverse set of people.
31. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Internet culture causes various problems.
B. We are losing some most important emotions.
C. Online friendships do good to offline friendships.
D. Social networking affects young people’s personalities.

Human activity has shrunk the size of wild animals the world over, and yet recent research has
found many mammals (哺乳动物) living near cities have become steadily larger, both in length and in
weight.
“That wasn’t what we expected to find at all,” says Robert Guralnick, who studies biodiversity
informatics at the Florida Museum. Expanding urban environments grow much hotter than natural
habitats (生长环境 ), and warmer temperatures usually benefit mammals that have a smaller, more
energy-saving figure ---a principle of biology known as Bergmann’s rule.
As the world grows warmer, some scientists have worried that mammals living near cities are
supposed to grow smaller, possibly reducing their fitness as a species and, no doubt, the fitness of being
threateners (威胁者), too. But even with climate change, that might not happen. As it turns out, there’s
第 6 页 共 10 页
another factor in determining a mammal’s size that might compete with or even go beyond temperature,
and that is food.
In and around cities with large populations, where high-energy human foods are more widely
available and hunters are fewer and farther in between, new research discovered that most of the
mammal species studied appear to be growing in size, not shrinking. According to careful measurements
of more than 100 species from North America, gathered from museum collections over the past 80 years,
the main reason is not a city’s temperature. Instead, the greatest increases in weight and body length
appear to lie among those mammals that live near the most humans, regardless of how hot their
surroundings are.
As climate change grows worse, there is, of course, the possibility that that might change, but at
least for now, it seems that wolves, deer, bats, and other mammals in North America could be affected
more by city populations than city climates.
If we want to preserve the mammals that exist today for the future, it’s important that we know
how human civilization is shaping their size, behavior and well-being. In a rapidly changing world, that
knowledge could mean the difference between ongoing life and dying out.
32. What finding does Robert Guralnick consider surprising?
A. Urban environments are hotter than ever.
B. The animals in natural habitats become smaller.
C. Many mammals grow against Bergmann’s rule.
D. City temperatures cause animals to shrink in size.
33. Why do many mammals living near cities grow in size?
A. They are well taken care of by citizens. B. They have more foods and fewer threats.
C. The heat in cities is good for their growth. D. Urban habitats are better than natural ones.
34. What are we advised to do to protect the existing mammals?
A. Provide healthy food to them. B. Limit the population in cities.
C. Learn how human civilization affects them. D.Help them adapt to the changing climate.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Human Activity Has Shrunk the Size of Animals
B. Global Warming Is Shaping the Future of Mammals
C. Mammals in Nature Have a Better Chance to Survive
D. Many Mammals Living Near Cities Are Growing Bigger

For most of us, a large part of our work requires us to look at the screen for a long time. 36
Sadly, too much screen time can do harm to our eyes and impact our mood (心情 ). While it is
impossible to escape the screen completely, there are ways to reduce the time you spend on the screen.
37 But continuing online chatting means our eyes are down on the screen for long. If
possible, try and schedule phone calls with distant loved ones and make a face-to-face catch-up with
closer relatives. In-person meetings provide a sense of connection and empathy (共鸣) that is difficult
第 7 页 共 10 页
to replace via video.
Keeping up to date with your social media channels is fun and socially very important for many
users. But these channels can also be a big time waster for many people. 38 The next step is to
gradually reduce this, particularly on days when screen usage is high for other reasons.
If you live with someone else, you can try to fight against screen time together. Establish certain
areas in your home, or time periods in a day, where you both agree to stay off your phone. 39
Consider doing some hobbies together, like playing a board game.
One of the biggest tech no-nos that people commonly commit is bringing phones, computers, and
more into bed. Don’t charge (充电 ) your phone next to your bed, as it will cause you to check for
messages if you wake up during the night. 40
A. One useful method is setting clear goals.
B. Many online time killers also add to the screen time.
C. Try to limit the time you will spend on social media daily.
D. You need regain control over the time spent on digital devices.
E. Looking at the phone’s screen just before bed can affect your sleep too.
F. During that time, you can enjoy some face-to-face communication instead.
G. The Internet gives us various ways to stay in touch with friends and family.
