I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the cup, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope?
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. This is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a cup, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my ability to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
4. Why did the author soak the stub in water?
A. To decorate the nice cup. B. To hope that it would grow.
C. To make a video in person. D. To remove kitchen rubbish.
5. What can we infer from paragraph two?
A. This lettuce showed no sign of recovery.
B. This lettuce was still fighting to survive.
C. Tiny root thread climbed out of the cup.
D. The cuts can still be seen where there used to be leaves.
6. How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation?
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Annoyed.
7. What can we learn from Monty?
A. Never being afraid to restart yourself. B. Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C. Enjoying your own life to the fullest. D. Giving freedom to the heart in a way.
C
If you’re planning to go on a diet, or if you suffer from serious conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), knowing exactly what and how much you’re eating is important. In this day and age, we have calorie and nutrition calculators even on our smartphones, but they act only as guides, whereas a famous company’s revolutionary new device, CaloRieco, actually analyzes the food on your plate and provides accurate (correct and true in every detail) information in just a few seconds.
You’ve probably used caloric calculators before, and you know that they only offer general information. For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a hamburger, but it can’t tell you exactly how many calories are in the hamburger. The same goes for nutrients like protein or fat. And this is what makes the new CaloRieco so special.
The spokesman for the company said that its outstanding invention is aimed at dieters and diabetes sufferers, both of whom make up a sizable market. Displayed at a recent tech show, CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection technology to determine the nutritional values of almost any food and also provide accurate calorie estimates. All you have to do is put your plate in the box-shaped device and wait between 10 and 20 seconds for it to analyze all the food.
Once it’s done analyzing the various ingredients (烹饪材料) in your meal, CaloRieco shows the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to the company the device is able to recognize the vast majority of foods, except soups and very dark dishes.
CaloRieco can also connect to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld device, so you can access it whenever you need.
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at the show is just a prototype (样机) which needs to be improved. It’s expected to be a hit in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.
8. What is the advantage of CaloRieco?
A. It uses light reflection technology.
B. It offers general information of food.
C. It is a high-tech device working as a guide.
D. It can present the exact calorie of analyzed food.
9. According to the text, what is right about CaloRieco?
A. It needs a long time to analyze the food.
B. It can show the food data on the smartphone directly.
C. It can count the calories of all foods on your plate.
D. It may be popular among dieters and diabetes sufferers.
10. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The smartphone. B. The app. C. The data. D. The food.
11. What can we infer about CaloRieco from the last paragraph?
A. It’s hopeful. B. It’s perfect. C. It’s costly. D. It’s available.
D
Mammoth Cave National Park, in the state of Kentucky, is a unique and historical natural wonder. It has the world’s longest cave system. There may be another 600 miles of cave passageways that have yet to be explored. In addition, more than 200 caves that are disconnected from the larger system can be found in the park.
The underground caves were created naturally by the process of limestone (石灰岩) erosion. Rain and rivers slowly dissolve (溶解) and shape soft limestone. The system is still being shaped today. Not only are they an amazing destination to visit, but the system also provides drinking water for about 40% of the US population.
The caves’ first explorers were Native Americans, who mined (采矿) the upper levels of Mammoth Cave. Later, the sites were left in great shape and began to draw public interest.
Mammoth Cave was made into a national park thanks to strong support. Back in the 1920s, the Southern Appalachian National Park Commission was set up in 1925. After years of work, as well as building roads and public facilities, the park was completed on July 1, 1941.
The park now receives around 2 million visitors a year, with about a quarter taking a tour of the caves—everything from a cultural tour to the more adventurous tours on offer. The cave supports more than 130 wildlife species (物种). The park is also much more than just a cave; the forest around has a diverse (多种多样的) range of species. There are miles of trails open for horseback riding, with canoe trails and great fishing spots. There are also more than 1,300 flowering species in the forest, and animals like wood warblers, thrushes, and bald eagles can regularly be seen.
12. What can we learn about Mammoth Cave from the first two paragraphs?
A. It was made by ancient people. B. It has the length of 600 miles.
C. It is made up of 200 connected caves. D. It has a large underground system.
13. How do the caves form?
A. Explorers mine the upper levels. B. The government searches for drinkable water.
C. Water dissolves limestone. D. People build roads and public facilities.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. More than 1,300 flowers grow in the caves.
B. The park offers visitors diverse experiences.
C. Most visitors come to the park just for caves.
D. Two million people have visited the park till now.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Planning cave tours around the world
B. Exploring the world’s longest cave system
C. Learning about the explorers of Mammoth Cave
D. Predicting the future of Mammoth Cave National Park

Your sanity (理智) isn’t only important because you are important, but also because your children need sane parents. And there are just a few rules that you’ll find, after you get the hang of them, help you keep your head when your children are crying theirs off.
So who are the best parents you know? The ones who have a seemingly instinctive (本能的) ability to say and do the things that result in happy, confident, and well-balanced children? Have you ever wondered what makes them so good at it? Most of the best parents have one key thing in common. They’re relaxed about it. And the worst ones are worried about something. Maybe they’re not stressed out about how good they are as parents, but they’re anxious about something that affects their ability to be a really good parent.
There are a couple of parents who are neurotically clean and tidy. Their children have to take their shoes off at the door or the whole world falls apart, even if the shoes are clean. They get really worried and nervous if their children leave anything out of place or make any kind of a mess, even if it gets cleaned up later. It makes it impossible for their kids to relax and enjoy themselves, in case they get grass stains on their pants or knock over a sauce bottle. As a result, their children may become very well-behaved but not flexible or sociable.
On the other hand, the really good parents expect their children to, be noisy, messy, energetic, whiny (爱发牢骚的) and covered in mud. They take it all in their stride. They’ve got 18 years to turn these small creatures into respectable grown-ups, and children can pace themselves. There is no rush to get them acting like adults because they’ll get there in good time.
16. Why does the author ask three questions in paragraph 2?
A. To summarize the first paragraph. B. To lead to the features of good parents.
C. To help parents deal with the confusion. D. To show the problems of present parents.
17. How does the text develop?
A. By making comparisons. B. By proving guesses.
C. By explaining the concept. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
18. Who do you think is the best parent according to the passage?
A. Mr. Carter felt at ease when told his son had stolen a book.
B. Mrs. Edwards just listened to her whiny daughter patiently.
C Mrs. Williams felt better after her son cleaned his bedroom.
D. Mr. Smith visited an expert on career for his 8-year-old son.
19. What is the author’s attitude toward parenting?
A. Let nature take its course. B. He who laughs last laughs best.
C. Grass is always greener on the other side. D. Help the shoots grow by pulling them upward.

Studies continue to show how important strong friendships are to our overall health. Here’re the rules you are supposed to know to keep strong and healthy friendships.
____20____ Everyone needs a support network. When you consider yourself the friend of another, you’re implicitly offering to be a part of his or her support network. What’s more, without trust and honesty, there is no authenticity (真实性) to the friendship.
Be all ears to your friends. Too often, we only “half hear” what others are telling us, and have a hard time making space for caring about others’ conditions. ____21____ If we don’t truly know what our friends need or can’t clearly express how we feel or what we need, friendships won’t survive or continue.
Throw away the judgment. ____22____ Good friends are able to realize that everyone is human. Friends don’t have to necessarily “like” or “approve” of their friends’ choices, but good friends will accept their friends’ choices no matter what.
Forgive (原谅) where you can — and seek forgiveness when you make a mess of something. No one promises to bring perfection to a relationship, so being willing to accept and forgive the weaknesses of others makes you more likely to build a lasting friendship. ____23____
Respect your friends and their boundaries. Everyone has a right to set up personal boundaries to feel safe and respected. Some friends may have a difficult time letting people get close to them for fear of being hurt. ____24____ Give them the space they need to feel comfortable, and let the relationship deepen over time.
A. Don’t crowd your friends.
B. Offer them what they need.
C. Support, trust, and honesty are givens.
D. But friendships don’t need to be perfect.
