So what makes him so strong? What other qualities does he need? Muscles are made of thousands of stringy fibers-a number that is fixed during childhood — which contract (收缩) when doing work. Strength does not depend on the number of fibers but on the function of their thickness and how many of them contract at the same time. Exercise actually damages the muscles. During the recovery stage, the muscle fibers increase in size. Exercise also trains more muscle fibers to work at one time. If a muscle is weak or untrained, for example, only 10 percent of its fibers will contract, whereas up to 90 percent of the fibers in a weight lifter’s biceps (二头肌) will contract. Aside from the strength, two other factors go into making an athlete: fitness and endurance. Fitness is related to the condition of the heart. During exercises, there is an increase in the amount of blood returning to the heart from the muscles. A typical volume for a runner at rest is about 5 quarts a minute, compared with 30 quarts during a vigorous trial This greater volume means more work for the heart — a muscular balloon that expands and contract is to take in blood and push it out. Like any other muscle, the heart enlarges and gets stronger with routine exercise. Endurance, or the length of time muscles can work, depends in part on how much fuel — in this case sugar — the muscles can store. A muscle that is continually exercised until it runs out of sugar tends to store more when it refuels at the next meal. And more sugar can translate into greater endurance the next time the muscle is put to the test. 21. What determines the strength of a world-champion body builder? A. The thickness of fibers and the number of those contracting contemporarily. B. The number of fibers and the amount of exercise he does at the same time. C. The function of fibers and their thickness. D. The function of fibers and their recovery. 22. What effect does exercise have on muscle fibers according to the passage? A. It helps fibers more easily to contract. B. It makes fibers increase quickly in size. C. It makes more fibers weak or untrained. D. It helps more fibers to work at one time. 23. What could be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The more sugar muscles store, the thicker the fibers in them become. B. The more sugar a muscle consumes, the less it tends to store next time. C. The more sugar the muscles of an athlete store, the longer time they can work. D. The amount of sugar in muscles largely depends on when they refuel at the nest meal. 24. What could be the best title for the passage? A. Strong Heart and World-champion B. Strength, Fitness and Endurance C. Body Building and Muscles D. Resources of Strength 【答案】21. A 22. D 23. C 24. 根据第二段的“Strength does not depend on the number of fibers but on the function of their thickness and how many of them contract at the same time.(力量不取决于纤维的数量,而取决于纤维的厚度和同时收缩的纤维数量。)” 故选A。 根据第三段的“Exercise also trains more muscle fibers to work at one time.(运动还可以训练更多的肌肉纤维在同一时间工作。)” 根据最后一段“Endurance, or the length of time muscles can work, depends in part on how much fuel—in this case sugar—the muscles can store.(耐力,也就是肌肉工作的时间长短,部分取决于肌肉能储存多少燃料——在这里指的是糖。)” 根据第一段“So what makes him so strong? What other qualities does he need?(是什么让他如此强壮?他还需要什么品质?)”和第四段“Aside from the strength, two other factors go into making an athlete: fitness and endurance.(除了力量之外,要成为一名运动员还有另外两个因素:健康和耐力。)” B。 B When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline (座机)? These days you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn’t own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket. Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime. Still, 55 percent of Australians have a landline phone at home and only just over a quarter (29%) rely only on their smartphones according to a survey (调查). Of those Australians who still have a landline, a third concede that it’s not really necessary and they’re keeping it as a security blanket — 19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies. I think my home falls into that category. More than half of Australian homes are still choosing to stick with their home phone. Age is naturally a factor (因素)— only 58 percent of Generation Ys still use landlines now and then, compared to 84 percent of Baby Boomers who’ve perhaps had the same home number for 50 years. Age isn’t the only factor; I’d say it’s also to do with the makeup of your household. Generation Xers with young families, like my wife and I, can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. That said, to be honest the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents, to the point where we play a game and guess who is calling before we pick up the phone (using Caller ID would take the fun out of it). How attached are you to your landline? How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries? 25. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about mobile phones? A. Their target users. B. Their wide popularity. C. Their major functions. D. Their complex design. 26. What does the underlined word “concede” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Admit. B. Argue. C. Remember. D. Remark. 27. What can we say about Baby Boomers? A. They like smartphone games. B. They enjoy guessing callers’ identity. C. They keep using landline phones. D. They are attached to their family. 28. What can be inferred about the landline from the last paragraph? A. It remains a family necessity. B. It will fall out of use some day. C. It may increase daily expenses. D. It is as important as the gas light. B 26. A 27. C 28. 根据文章第二段“These days you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Australia over the age of 15 who doesn’t own a mobile phone. In fact plenty of younger kids have one in their pocket. Practically everyone can make and receive calls anywhere, anytime.(现在你很难在澳大利亚找到15岁以上的没有手机的人。事实上,很多年幼的孩子口袋里都有手机。几乎每个人都可以随时随地拨打和接听电话)”可推知,本段主要说明手机在澳大利亚广受欢迎。故选B项。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“Of those Australians who still have a landline, a third concede that it’s not really necessary and they’re keeping it as a security blanket — 19 percent say they never use it while a further 13 percent keep it in case of emergencies.(在那些仍然拥有固定电话的澳大利亚人中,三分之一的人concede这不是真正必须的,他们将其作为一种安全保障——19%的人说他们从未使用过固定电话,另有13%的人保留固定电话以防紧急情况)”可知,许多人认为固定电话并不是必须拥有的,有些人保留固定电话只是为了防止紧急情况,所以三分之一的人承认了固定电话的非必要性。 故选A项。 根据第四段“84 percent of Baby Boomers who’ve perhaps had the same home number for 50 years.(婴儿潮时代中有84%的人可能已经有50年相同的家庭号码了)”以及第五段“That said, to be honest the only people who ever ring our home phone are our Baby Boomers parents (也就是说,老实说,唯一打过我们家电话的人是婴儿潮一代的父母)”可推知,婴儿潮一代的人一直在用固定电话。 根据最后一段“How attached are you to your landline? How long until they go the way of gas street lamps and morning milk deliveries? (你有多喜欢你的固定电话?它们还要多久才能走上煤气路灯和早晨送牛奶的道路?)”以及常识可知,本段使用类比的方式,使用煤气路灯以及早晨送牛奶已经被淘汰的例子,侧面说明了固定电话总有一天会被废弃的。故选B项。 C Immersed (沉浸) in folk, tradition, culture, religion, digital arts and the experimental, the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR)Festival of World Cultures presented a various program of concerts and club nights, fairs and markets, performances, street events, workshops and is Ireland’s first Global Carnival. The Festival was committed to presenting a wide mix of world artists as well as offering a “passport to the world” program of events, many of which were free to all. Staged throughout the historic port town of Din Laoghaire, the DLR Festival of World Cultures was an annual international arts festival celebrating cultural diversity. New this year, are an exciting range of themed events, which include the anticipated Feast Americana that offers a banquet of live music and food in celebration of the typical American country fair. The new Health and Harmony fair offers a chance to regain control of your well-being, while Salon Culture offers traditional decoration techniques and an opportunity to get festival fresh! A definite highlight will be the spectacular audio-visual show Hotel Kiev, a night time visual montage(蒙太奇) projected onto the front wall of the Royal Marine Hotel. The show features a live performance by the fascinating Ukrainian quartet(四重奏) DakhaBrakha, who last year received a standing applause on the main stage. The Festival would not be complete without the Global Village, in association with Oxfam Ireland, the World Dance Plaza and the Mela festival in celebration of South Asian Arts. Now in its 9th year, the Festival attracts over 250,000 people making it Ireland’s largest intercultural celebration. With a diverse world music line-up, food fairs, art exhibitions, workshops and cultural demonstrations as well as a Festival newspaper and nightly Festival Club where Irish artists jam with world musicians, this family-friendly celebration is a round-trip ticket to a world of culture. And, with over 90% of the events free of charge, the Festival is the top value-for-money event on the summer calendar, appealing to all the senses as well as to the wallet. 29. Which can best describe the DLR Festival of World Cultures? A. Diverse. B. Free. C. Crowded. D. Valuable. 30. Which is probably the most eye catching event? A. Feast Americana. B. Health and Harmony fair. C. Salon Culture. D. Hotel Kiev show. 31. What do we know about the festival from the text? A. The Festival has a history of many years. B. Sports and health are involved in the carnival. C. It is worthwhile to attend the festival. D. The heavy traffic jam is part of the large celebration. 32. What is the purpose of the text? A. To introduce the Festival to all over the world. B. To encourage artists to visit and stay in Ireland. C. To attract live performances to the Royal Marine Hotel. D. To promote the cultures of South Asian Arts. A 30. D 31. C 32. 文章主要介绍了爱尔兰的节日the DLR Festival of World Cultures。 根据第一段“Immersed (沉浸) in folk, tradition, culture, religion, digital arts and the experimental, the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR)Festival of World Cultures presented a various program of concerts and club nights, fairs and markets, performances, street events, workshops and is Ireland’s first Global Carnival. (沉浸在民间、传统、文化、宗教、数字艺术和实验中,邓莱里-拉斯当(DLR)世界文化节提供了各种各样的节目,包括音乐会和俱乐部之夜、集市和市场、表演、街头活动、研讨会,是爱尔兰的第一个全球狂欢节。)可知,DLR世界文化节是丰富多彩的。故选A。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“A definite highlight will be the spectacular audio-visual show Hotel Kiev, a night time visual montage(蒙太奇) projected onto the front wall of the Royal Marine Hotel. (一个明确的亮点将是壮观的视听表演基辅酒店,夜间视觉蒙太奇投影到皇家海军酒店的前墙。)可知,一个明显的亮点将是壮观的视听节目——基辅酒店,即这个节目最吸睛。故选D。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“And, with over 90% of the events free of charge, the Festival is the top value-for-money event on the summer calendar, appealing to all the senses as well as to the wallet.(而且,超过90%的活动都是免费的,这个节日是夏季日历上最物有所值的活动,吸引了所有的感官和钱包。)可知,值得参加这个节日。故选C。 【32题详解】 推理判断题。根据全文可知,文章介绍了爱尔兰DLR世界文化节的举办地、特点、内容、影响以及今年的亮点等,这些都是对于文化节的介绍和宣传。所以文章的目的是向全世界介绍这个节日。故选A。 D At first look, the playground at the Children’s Guild-Transformation Academy in Baltimore, Maryland, looks like any other. It has swings, slides, and places for children to climb and crawl. But the playground is not just a place for fun. It is also a place where students can learn, grow and gain independence. Everything — from the kind of surface it sits on, to the color of its sitting areas, to the placement of the surrounding fence — is specifically designed for kids with autism (自闭症). Mark Rapaport is the managing director of autism services at the Transformation Academy. He told VOA Learning English the school accepts students aged 5 to 21 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are lower- functioning. Rapaport said the goal of Transformation Academy is to make the students as independent as possible in an effort to help them prepare for adult life. The school aims to provide help with developing communication and social skills, as well as practical abilities like cleaning or cooking. “The playground, designed by Maryland company Sparks@Play, using structures manufactured by Landscape Structures, Inc., took months to develop,” said Dan Hack. He works for Sparks@Play and helped lead the playground’s design. Hack said he and others spent weeks getting to know the students and understanding their needs before any building was started. The design process involved physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists. The $500,000 project was funded with support from the state of Maryland and the nonprofit Orokawa Foundation. Parts of the playground that seem small are very important for children with autism and other disabilities. The surrounding fence extends into a wooded area to make it seem more open, And the ground under the play areas is made of soft, but solid materials to support students using wheelchairs or crutches. The benches on the outside of the playground look simple from far away, but are “one of our most inclusive sensory” elements, Hack said. They have many different colors that bring about feelings of calm and curiosity. They are also made with smooth material that can be felt and moved. The academy’s Rapaport said if a child starts to feel uneasy, they can sit down and feel the bench, which can help them relax. 33. Why is the playground at the Transformation Academy different from any other? A. It has equipment and places for kids to climb and crawl. B. Kids can become healthy mentally and physically in the playground. C. Only students aged 5 to 21 are allowed to play in the playground. D. It is designed with special materials for ASD kids. 34. What does the Transformation Academy intend to do? A. Provide practical life skills for students with ASD. B. Teach students with ASD to exercise gradually. C. Help students with ASD get ready for their adulthood. D. Sharpen the communication skills of students with ASD. 35. How did Sparks@Play design the playground? A. By launching a fundraising campaign in the state of Maryland. B. By figuring out and considering students’ special needs at first. C. By decreasing the size of the playground to ensure students’ safety. D. By asking specialists to gather advice from students and teachers. 36. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The surrounding fence is made of wooden materials. B. The ground under the play areas avoids the falling of students. C. The benches can relieve students’ stress and nervousness. D. The playground is small but open enough for students. 【答案】33. D 34. C 35. B 36. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了马里兰州巴尔的摩市专门为患有自闭症和其他残障的学生设计了一家游乐场,旨在帮助他们学习、成长和获得独立性,使他们能够更好地融入社会并提高生活质量。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“Everything — from the kind of surface it sits on, to the color of its sitting areas, to the placement of the surrounding fence — is specifically designed for kids with autism (自闭症).(一切——从它所坐的表面的种类,到它的座位区域的颜色,到周围围栏的位置——都是专门为自闭症儿童设计的)”可知,转型学院的操场与其他学校不同是因为它是为ASD儿童设计的特殊材料。故选D。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Rapaport said the goal of Transformation Academy is to make the students as independent as possible in an effort to help them prepare for adult life.(拉帕波特说,转型学院的目标是让学生尽可能独立,帮助他们为成年生活做好准备)”可知,转型学院打算帮助自闭症学生为他们的成年做好准备。故选C。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Hack said he and others spent weeks getting to know the students and understanding their needs before any building was started.(哈克说,他和其他人花了几个星期的时间来了解学生,了解他们的需求,然后才开始建造任何建筑)”可知,Sparks@Play首先找出并考虑学生的特殊需要来设计游乐场。故选B。 【36题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The benches on the outside of the playground look simple from far away, but are “one of our most inclusive sensory” elements, Hack said. They have many different colors that bring about feelings of calm and curiosity. They are also made with smooth material that can be felt and moved. The academy’s Rapaport said if a child starts to feel uneasy, they can sit down and feel the bench, which can help them relax.(哈克说,操场外面的长椅从远处看很简单,但却是“我们最具包容性的感官元素之一”。它们有许多不同的颜色,给人带来平静和好奇的感觉。它们也是用光滑的材料制成的,可以触摸和移动。该学院的拉帕波特说,如果孩子开始感到不安,他们可以坐下来摸摸长凳,这可以帮助他们放松)”可推知,这些长椅可以缓解学生的压力和紧张。故选C。 第二节(满分12.5分) We set off on our journey up Mount Wutai onto its peak to appreciate the mysterious and beautiful Bodhisattva Lights, ball-shaped lights floating in the whole sky with radiant beams. Seen from the foot of the mountain, the sky was gray and cloudy. ____37____ It sometimes appeared in white mist, and sometimes was completely covered by clouds.  On the mountainside, our clothing grew wet. ____38____ It slowed the horses down to a heavy pace. We spent the night at a small temple. The next morning we continued our climb in the rain. The road was more slippery than the day before, so we had no choice but to get down from our horses and walked on foot.  On the way, we were told the unusual phenomenon wouldn’t be observed in the rain. We sighed with disappointment. ____39____ And the sun set in the west, the clouds disappeared and the mist faded.  Eventually, we arrived at the peak, with the sky filled with stars. Late in the night, we got awake by a shout. “Get up. Hurry up to see the Lights!” We moved quickly, threw on a few pieces of clothing and ran out. It was cold, making our bodies shake from head to foot. ____40____ Just before our eyes, the mysterious phenomenon appeared.  Thousands of ball-shaped objects floated slowly in the distance, shining golden beams of light, as though the whole sky were filled with countless glowing lanterns. The balls moved across the sky at the same speed. ____41____ They were light and delicate. Meanwhile, we all just froze there, speechless with wonder, appreciating the incredible views. A. Suddenly, a wolf appeared before them. B. Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, they started to run away. C. Unexpectedly, the sky began to clear. D. In the distance stood the peak, unclear. E. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try. I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!” I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. A typical volume for a runner at rest is about 5 quarts a minute, compared with 30 quarts during a vigorous trial (运动测试). This greater volume means more work for the heart — a muscular balloon that expands and contract is to take in blood and push it out. Resources of Strength B When almost everyone has a mobile phone, why are more than half of Australian homes still paying for a landline (座机)? Generation Xers with young families like my wife and I, can still find it convenient to have a home phone rather than providing a mobile phone for every family member. A They like smartphone games. B. They enjoy guessing callers’ identity. C They keep using landline phones. D. They are attached to their family. 28. What can be inferred about the landline from the last paragraph? A. It remains a family necessity. B. It will fall out of use some day. C. It may increase daily expenses. D. It is as important as the gas light. C Immersed (沉浸) in folk, tradition, culture, religion, digital arts and the experimental, the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR)Festival of World Cultures presented a various program of concerts and club nights, fairs and markets, performances, street events, workshops and is Ireland’s first Global Carnival. 29. 第二节(满分12.5分) We set off on our journey up Mount Wutai onto its peak to appreciate the mysterious and beautiful Bodhisattva Lights, ball-shaped lights floating in the whole sky with radiant beams. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
