It was New Year’s Day. I made a resolution to find my stray (走失的) dog, Puppy-Rocky. In the morning, I could hear icy rain knocking the windows. I said a quick prayer for Puppy-Rocky. He was out there somewhere in the storm, and I could just feel it. Sure, it had been three months since he’d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles (奇迹).
That fall, Puppy-Rocky, my sweet dog, had disappeared from my parents’ house in California. He had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in New York City. I was staying with friends until I signed my lease (租约) on a new place. Puppy-Rocky had gotten out of my parents’ house two days before I was set to fly back home to pick him up.
My mom and I spent that entire visit searching for him. Mom was the family's resident “realist”, which meant she spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “He's either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found him,” she said. I rolled my eyes. Mom always supported me, but this time she doubted. She could have done with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn't explain it, I believed I'd see my Puppy-Rocky again. His barks never faded away. He'd been homeless when I first met him, a naughty little dog that had survived all on his own. If any dog could do the impossible, it was my Puppy-Rocky. Even after I returned to New York City without him and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we'd be reunited.
Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Puppy-Rocky's carrier, loaded it into the car, and then asked my mom to drive me to the shelter for the homeless dogs, hoping he'd been found.
“Dave, you have to be realistic,” my mom said as we headed to the garage. “He's been gone too long. You're not going to find him.”

1. 人物(Characters)
2. 地点(Setting)
3. 时间(Time)
4. 事件(Plot)
5. 主题(Theme)

Para. 1 “Don’t you believe in New Year miracles?” I asked. She replied worriedly, “I just don't want you to get your hopes up and be disappointed again.” I didn’t respond. Along the way, the atmosphere was charged with an awkward silence. As we pulled up to the shelter, I could feel my heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car, ready to face whatever awaited me inside. After hearing my explanation, a staff member led us to different rooms. My heart sank as I scanned the dogs of various colors and sizes but none of them was Puppy-Rocky and I could feel my Mom’s hands holding me more tightly.
Para. 2 When I stepped into the last room of the shelter, a familiar bark came into my ears. My heart leaped with joy and disbelief and I rushed towards the sound. And there he was, my Puppy-Rocky, sitting in a corner, his tail wagging excitedly as he recognized me. Tears of happiness welled up in my eyes as I ran to him and scooped him up in my arms. Showing him to Mom, I cried, “It’s a true New Year miracle!” I noticed her eyes filled with affection and relief. We expressed our heartfelt gratitude to the staff. All the doubts and fears of the past three months melted away. On the way home, Puppy-Rocky interacted actively with us, and laughter of happiness came floating out of the car window.
Para. 1 “Don’t you believe in New Year miracles?” I asked. Mom just shook her head slightly, but she still accompanied me to the shelter. As we arrived, I rushed in with high hopes. The staff there were very kind and showed me around each room. The smell of the shelter was strong, filled with the barks of various dogs. I looked at each dog carefully, my heart pounding with anticipation. Mom stood behind me, still skeptical.
Para. 2 When I stepped into the last room of the shelter, a familiar bark came into my ears. My heart skipped a beat. I quickly scanned the room and there he was, Puppy - Rocky, looking a bit thinner but still as lively as ever. He jumped up and down, barking excitedly. Tears filled my eyes as I rushed towards him. Mom was stunned at first, then a big smile spread across her face. I gently put him into the carrier, and we drove home happily, celebrating the beautiful New Year miracle.
Para. 1 “Don’t you believe in New Year miracles?” I asked. Mom sighed but didn't say more. When we reached the shelter, I was greeted by a chaotic scene. Dogs were barking everywhere, and the staff were busy handling different cases. I showed them a picture of Puppy - Rocky and they led me through the rows of cages. I could feel Mom's doubtful eyes on me, but I was too focused on finding my dog. Each step was filled with hope and nervousness.
Para. 2 When I stepped into the last room of the shelter, a familiar bark came into my ears. Instantly, I recognized it was Puppy - Rocky. He was in a corner, wagging his tail vigorously when he saw me. I opened the cage and he leaped into my arms, licking my face all over. I was so overjoyed that I couldn't stop crying. Mom came over, patting my shoulder, saying, “I was wrong. You were right all along.” With Puppy - Rocky safely in the carrier, we left the shelter, feeling the warmth of this wonderful reunion.
