So I decided to relieve his pressure with basketball. That was when I heard Dad’s old pickup
chugging around the corner. It was earlier than when he usually arrived home. My brother and I
stepped off the driveway, and we waited for him to turn off the engine before going back to shoot
baskets.“Hey,guys!”Dad said as he got out. He couldn’t hide the worry in his eyes, and for a
moment his face filled with more wrinkles than I remembered.“Want to shoot a few hoops,
Dad?”I asked, knowing how much he loved basketball and thinking it might cheer him up.
“Sure,”he said, opening his eyes and smiling a weary smile. “Why not?We have a little time
before dinner tonight, don’t we?”My brother bounce-passed the ball to him,and Dad caught it as
if catching a ball was as natural to him as breathing. Time passed quickly. It was already dark
outside.
Sweat on his face,Dad smiled at me with appreciation in his eyes. The three of us headed
upstairs for dinner. It was nice to see Dad smiling again,as if the time he spent shooting the ball with
us revived him and brought back his ability to laugh a little. For a short time we helped him forget
about COVID-19 and his customers getting sick and whether his business would survive the
pandemic. I knew how rare it was for Dad to find time to play with my brother and me lately. I

Text 10
M:Hi there. I’m Tim Tanner. I am honored to be here today. I’ve appeared on lots of TV shows
with my brother Sam Tanner as the singing twin brothers. People often ask us what it’s like to
be twins. Well,I was born ten minutes before Sam so I’m the older brother, although we do
have a real older brother,Ken,who’s a year older than us. We were born premature — we
suddenly appeared in October rather than January. Ken’s birthday is in December,so we’re
pretty close in age.
Sam and I aren’t completely the same, but even our dad makes mistakes sometimes,
because there’s hardly any difference in our hair, and we’re the same build. But as soon as we
open our mouths,he’ll know which one it is.
In character we’re mostly similar — we’ve both always loved music, and we’ve always
had a real interest in going out. However, people that know us say I’m not as confident as Sam
is,which is probably true.
We are going to promote our new album Time Dance next week, which is quite different
from our first one Soul Brothers. We’ve poured our hearts into it,and we’d be incredibly
grateful for your support.

Set in China's remote northwest, the miniseries "To the Wonder"is a hit with the viewers
and a rare example of a Chinese drama winning international recognition. The miniseries "To the
Wonder"has become China's breakout TV hit of the year, with the eight-episode drama leading
to a widespread reaction on social media.
The show has won praise for its present of life in Altay(阿勒泰),which has a large ethnic
Kazakh(哈萨克族)population that traditionally lived a lifestyle on horses. It's also a rare
example of a Chinese drama produced by a female director-39-year-old Teng Congcong-with
many viewers saying they were particularly impressed by the female characters of the show. One
major story line involves the struggles of an ethnic Kazakh woman who wants to leave her
alcoholic husband but faces opposition from the family.
The audience have described watching the show as an almost spiritual experience, and they
feel like they are enjoying the oxygen or lying under the warm sun.One fan of the show, named
Yang, said that she was amazed by the natural flow of the narrative and the way the characters
carefully develop.
"In an era when short videos and fast-paced plots have become mainstream, this series
unfolds a slow-paced world of the past in a way that's rarely seen on screen,"Yang said. The

TV series brings us the beautiful scenery of herds of cattle and sheep, blue sky,and green grass.
The overall music in the drama is mainly based on the folk songs of the Kazakh ethnic group,
which, combined with the natural scenery, brings a unique experience to the audience.
After the screening, the audience and the media gave high praise to the drama, believing
that the creators'ambition and difficulty in adapting this essay into a TV drama are admirable.
Through this drama, they felt the vastness of Chinese land, gained a deep understanding of the
lives of traditional herdsmen, and saw the glorious snow mountains and clear lakes of Altay. It
changes the traditional narrative style and expression of Ty dramas and will bring more
inspiration to the creation of TV dramas.

Basking (in the sun has been considered a health risk for at least four decades. The
main risk comes from ultraviolet (UV)light, which the sun releases alongside the radiation
()This can increase the chances of skin cancer, like aging and wrinkles. As a result,
most developed countries recommend sun-bathers protect their skin in the heat of the day with
sun cream, especially in the summer months.
高二英语·第5页(共12页)
The risks of UV are real, but new research suggests'it may be time.to consider the benefits.
According to a study published recently in Health and Place, increased UV exposure appears to
make people significantly less likely to die from heart disease as well as cancer. The risk of dying
from skin cancer did not meaningfully change with UV exposure.Although some studies have
previously proved the health benefits of UV exposure, this is the largest study to show a direct
connection between UV exposure and longer lifespan.
To conduct their analysis, the researchers from the University of Edinburgh used data from
over 360,000 people in the UK Bio-bank.They identified two groups of people more likely to
have high UV exposure:those who use sunbeds or sunlamps(太阳灯);and those living in
sunnier locations. To check that their predictions about the subjects'UV exposure were correct,
the scientists also looked at vitamin.D levels in the blood samples. As vitamin D is produced.in
the skin with UV radiation,it is a reliable sign of sun exposure.
The researchers then examined the subjects'death rates while correcting for other factors,
including age, gender, smoking and economic status (in Britain, those who live in sunnier areas
are typically richer).
Their analysis showed that sunbed-users were 23%less likely to die of heart disease, and
14%less likely to die of cancer, than non-users.Sunbed-users,in other words, lived an average
of 48 days longer than non-users over the 15 years during which they were studied. The
corresponding number for those living in sunnier places was 26 days.
The exact reason why UV light might lengthen lives is unknown. The authors believe part of
the explanation may lie in vitamin D's ability to boost the immune system and improve bone
health. However, there are other questions that need answering. For one thing, the team was
able to analyse data only from individuals living in Britain:different attitudes to the risks and
benefits of sun exposure could happen in other places.Owing to the structure of the data, they
also could not control for sun-cream use.
The new research may require scientists and health experts to look deeper into the benefits
of UV exposure and its risks. But for now, experts agree, the study is not a licence to stop
wearing sun cream.
28.What is the finding of the study?
A.UV lights cause a higher risk of heart disease.
B.UV lights eause a higher risk of skin cancer.
C.The more people are exposed to the sun,the healthier they will be.
D.UV lights don't necessarily cause heart disease and skin cancer.

29.What is the limitation of the study?
A.The number of blood samples is not enough.
B.It lacks support from people who love to bask in the sun.
C.It only investigates the samples in Britain
D.It has no significance for future study.
30.What is the future direction of the study?
A.To look deeper into the benefits of UV exposure and its risks.
B.To investigate samples around the world.
C.To research more risks of UV lights.
D.To study the effect of sun cream.
31.In which section of the newspaper can you find the text?
A.Health.
B.Environment.
C.Culture.
D.Society.

Few places on Earth are more familiar with the deadly consequences of extreme heat than
countries in Africa.Heat kills crops, spoils food and medicines, and makes it impossible for
people to work, study or sleep. As the planet warms, the number of days when people on the
continent will be exposed to extremely high temperatures is rising. How will they keep
themselves, their food and their medicines cool?
One answer is air conditioning. But air conditioning, while cooling people, worsens global
warming through power use and by warming the area around air-conditioned buildings. It is also
not affordable to most Africans.Only half the population has used power.Even where it is stable,
the cost of using an air conditioner is very high.Only 5%of African homes have a unit, which is
a low percentage. As temperatures and incomes rise, that number is likely to rise, and efforts are
already taken to make air conditioning more sustainable.Yet given the unstable electricity, lack
of money and the need to limit emissions of greenhouse gases, other ways of keeping cool will be
needed, too. For now, much climate-friendly innovation is concerned not with cooling people,
but with ensuring that heat does not spoil their food and medicine.Cameroon and Sierra Leone
use solar-powered fridges to keep vaccines and other temperature-sensitive medicines stable.
Combined with battery storage, they stay cool even when there is no sun or alternative power
supply. Some freeze water into an ice lining, meaning they do not even need batteries.
Goverments will need to help scale up sustainable practices. They must abolish (
rles that prevent people from gaining cooling, such as high import taxes on fridges.Designing
laws that favor greener appliances and improving labeling will help consumers choose greener

products. The harder governments try,the more Africans will have a chance to get some cool
comfort as the planet warms.
32.What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph mean?
A.No country is suffering from heat on the Earth except for Africa.
B.Many countries know about the heat on the Earth.
C.Africa knows best about the danger of heat.
D.Africa knows little about the danger of heat.
33.Why does the author mention "5%"in Paragraph 2?
A.To prove the popularity of fridges.
B.To show that Africa is very poor.
C.To indicate that air conditioners are expensive to produce in Africa.
D.To imply that air conditioners are not affordable to most Africans.
34.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A.Air conditioners have only good effects on the environment.
B.Air conditioners do damage to the environment for several reasons.
C.Air conditioners only cool people.
D.Air conditioners all need batteries.
35.What should the governments do according to the last paragraph?
A.They should encourage the use of greener products.
B.They should increase the import taxes on fridges.
C.They should abolish laws that favor greener appliances.
D.They should stop using labeling.
