Like most tourists, I enjoy taking photographs on holiday and can’t wait to show them to my friends and family when I get back. But while for me they represent treasured memories, to others they are more often than not simply a collection of boring, badly composed, out-of-focus pictures. So this year I decided to do something about this by booking myself on a trip to Rome which included photography lessons.
The first time I went to Rome, I remember thinking that it was a fantastic place for photographers with a wonderful photo opportunity lying around every corner. Yet by myself I didn’t have a clue how to go about getting some good shots. Added to this was the fact that there were crowds of tourists everywhere, blocking all the best views. But this second time things were different. Antonio, my photography tutor, was on hand to give expert advice every step of the way. The first thing Antonio told our group was that the secret to creating a good photographic image rather than just a snapshot (快照) is to first take a long look at what you want to photograph. Our first port of call was Piazza Navona, where Antonio gave us advice about how to photograph the Fountain of Neptune. For the next couple of hours, we wandered around the historic center visiting many of Rome’s architectural highlights. I didn’t get at all tired, even though I was on my feet for such a long time. And I felt that I was really able to appreciate the sights as I had to look at each one so carefully in order to get good pictures. It felt like a whole new world had opened up to me.
I learnt an incredible amount over the next two days, as well as having a thoroughly enjoyable time in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Maybe my friends and family will show a little more enthusiasm when I show them my holiday snaps from now on!
24. What motivated the author to book a photography trip to Rome?
A. Her interest in trying out a new hobby.
B. Her desire to explore the city of Rome.
C. Her dissatisfaction with her photography skills.
D. Her hope of finding inspiration for her photography.
25. Which words can best describe the author’s first experience in Rome?
A. Confusing and disappointing. B. Comfortable and uneventful.
C. Fantastic and adventurous. D. Relaxing and interesting.
26. What did Antonio suggest concerning photography in Rome?
A. Taking multiple snapshots of each subject.
B. Observing the subject before taking a photo.
C. Avoiding crowded areas for better pictures.
D. Looking at surroundings to unlock their secrets.
27. How did the author benefit from her photography tour of Rome?
A. She began to see things in a new light. B. She understood her friends and family better.
C. She was able to appreciate beautiful photos. D. She became more enthusiastic about snapshots.

As summer begins children get time off from school; offices get a little more empty. A vacation mindset is not hard to find. But it’s not always realistic. Maybe you aren’t granted so many vacation days. Maybe finances prohibit taking time off, as overtime hours are important to your personal bottom line.
The good news, though, is that sometimes a plain old weekend can bring mental health benefits — if you treat it like a vacation.
Research appears to back up this. In a study led by Mogilner of the UCLA School of Management, half of the participants were told on a Friday to treat their weekend like any other weekend, and half were told to treat it like a vacation. How the participants interpreted those instructions was up to them: they were free to spend the weekend.
When they returned to work on Monday, those who had been assigned to take on the vacation mindset scored higher on happiness measures, even when the amount of money they spent was controlled for.
A follow-up study tracked what participants were thinking and doing throughout the weekend. And indeed, the people who had been instructed to have a vacation mindset did spend their time slightly differently from the people who were in “normal weekend” mode: The former did less housework, and spent more time in bed. But what seemed to drive the happiness most was not these subtle shifts in behavior; instead, it was the attitude of mindfulness that they gave to even “normal” weekend activities.
So, it seems that happiness is boosted by savoring. Pausing, slowing down, and having an attitude of gratitude for the present moment have always been at the heart of mindfulness, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the outcomes of such a mindset are quite positive.
The next time you have a free day, or even just a a free hour, think about ways to view it as a break from the ordinary. It just might make you feel better, even once you’re back at work.
28. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 1?
A. The effect of vacation mindset. B. The importance of vacation time.
C. The actual situation about vacation. D. The conflicting schedule within a family.
29. Which is closest in meaning to “back up” in paragraph 3?
A. Turn against. B. Check up. C. Come up with. D. Stand up for.
30. What did the follow-up study really focus on?
A. What the “normal weekend” mode was.
B. What the participants enjoyed most at weekends.
C. Why the former participants were happier.
D. Who were likely to have a vacation mindset.
31. What might be the best title of this passage?
A. New activities brings benefits.
B. Vacation time should be extended.
C. More vacations cause more anxiety.
D. Shifting mindset about a plain time counts.

Chimps live in a male-dominated society, where most of their valuable partners are other males. However, as young male chimps become adults, they continue to maintain tight bonds with their mothers, a new study finds.
The dramatic changes of adolescence (青春期) are difficult for chimps, just like they are for humans, says Elizabeth Lonsdorf, an expert on primates at Franklin & Marshall College who was not involved in the study. “Sure enough,” she adds, “their moms remain a key social partner during this time.”
Previous research has shown chimp mothers provide their sons with support that goes far beyond nursing. Young male chimps that are close with their moms grow bigger and have a greater chance of survival. What’s more, losing their mothers after weaning (断奶), but before age 12, gets in the way of the ability of young chimps to win other males and reproduce.
To see whether this bond extends later into life, researchers followed 29 adolescent (9 to 15 years old) and young adult (16 to 20 years old) male chimps at a research site in Kibale National Park in Uganda and observed them from a distance for 3 years. The team found that the young adult males spent less time with their mothers than the adolescents did — 26% vs. 76%. As the male chimps grew older and more independent, they began to travel over wider ranges and spent more time away from their moms.
However, when these young adult males happened to be in the company of their mothers, they acted just like the adolescents. They groomed (梳理) their moms just as often and kept track of them. “Many mothers remained the males’ ‘best friends’, or ‘social partners’ they associated with most frequently,” says study co-leader Rachna Reddy from Harvard University.
Such persistent ties are also common in humans after sons leave their mothers and live on their own — especially in tough times, Reddy says. “We really feel what it’s like to not be able to see our mothers when we want to in tough times. The importance of those bonds in our lives and the comfort we get from them have deep evolutionary roots.”
32. What do we know about Elizabeth Lonsdorf?
A. She is in favor of the new study’s finding.
B. She played a supporting role in the new study.
C. She did a different study on chimps’ adolescence before.
D. She thinks chimps actually live in a female-dominated society.
33. What may happen when a male chimp loses its mother at 8?
A. It may be easier for it to produce babies.
B. It may be hard for it to interact with other chimps.
C. It may be much more aggressive than other males.
D. It may be tough for it to defeat other males.
34. What did the researchers probably do during their study?
A. They took care of some motherless chimps.
B. They worked hard to win the chimps’ trust.
C. They recorded the chimps’ social interaction.
D. They limited the chimps’ range of movement.
35. What does Reddy aim to do in the last paragraph?
A. To stress the purpose of the study.
B. To emphasize the significance of the study.
C. To improve humans’ mother-son relationship.
D. To make a comparison between chimps and humans.

How pleasant that day was! The temperature was fairly low, the sky was pretty clear and the wind was very gentle. Naturally, running was really good. I was running the first leg of a 20-mile race through some hills. Birds were warbling in the trees. The gentle wind was stroking my face. I felt at ease and full of energy. In spite of the fact that the race was occurring in the hills, I thought it would be wonderful.
In front of me was John, a student from Green High school. He was running with ease and at comfortable speed. Therefore, I decided to stay where he was. I didn’t think it necessary to concentrate on setting my own pace, since John was such a nice pacesetter. I would run before him, immediately he consumed all of his energy.
I ran after John closely. The course extended north for 7 miles, wandered west for 2 miles, and turned south again. The race was getting increasingly challenging. When 4 miles remained to be covered, I was all but worn out. My lungs were burning and legs seemed broken.
John overtook the boy ahead of him. Obviously, they were familiar with each other, because they exchanged some words. Their brief exchange made me worried. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good and John was running energetically. His steps were bouncy (弹性好的) while my springiness (轻快) was gone.
Still, I was desiring to go ahead of John. As long as he was totally tired, I would make it. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line. Whatever happened on the hill would surely determine who would cross it first.
When I ran up the hill, my attention was wandering for several minutes. When I looked up, John was running away, leaving me far behind. It was hopeless to overtake John.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly, John slowed down and sat onto the ground with a sharp pain.

W: Hey, Paul! Welcome to Berlin. It’s great to see you again.
M: Yeah, good to see you too! Have you been waiting at the station long?
W: Only half an hour. But let’s get out of this cold and go to my apartment! How are you feeling after that long bus ride?
M: Ah, it wasn’t too bad. It was only eighteen hours.
W: That’s crazy! You could have flown here from London for 70 euros, and it would only have taken an hour and a half. Was it really worth all that time, just to save a bit of money?
M: Well, it was a pretty uncomfortable ride, to be honest. The bus was starting to smell toward the end of it, and there was a guy who was breathing really loudly while he was sleeping. But the reason I took the bus was that it’s more environmentally friendly than flying.
W: I think it’s great you want to protect the environment. But you look so exhausted right now. I just think you should be more careful with your health.
M: Well, I wasn’t expecting the bus to be so unpleasant. But you are right. Next time I visit you, I’ll probably fly.

Today we are bringing you a story from real life. Three Mexican fishermen have been rescued after floating in a small boat for about nine months across thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean. The three fishermen left their home of San Blas on Mexico’s Pacific coast last November and were blown 5,000 miles off course after their 25-foot rubber boat ran out of gas and they were left to the mercy of the winds. The fishermen were able to survive by eating raw fish and sea birds. They caught any bird that landed on their boat and ate it uncooked. Their difficult and unpleasant experience finally ended a week ago when they were rescued by a Taiwanese fishing boat in waters between the Marshall Islands and Kiribati. They were very skinny and very hungry but they were definitely in a fine mental state. News of their rescue shocked friends and relatives. They were overjoyed, since they had given the fishermen up for dead, announcing their deaths in June.

C 25. A 26. B 27. A
根据第一段中的“But while for me they represent treasured memories, to others they are more often than not simply a collection of boring, badly composed, out-of-focus pictures. So this year I decided to do something about this by booking myself on a trip to Rome which included photography lessons.”(但对我来说,它们代表着珍贵的回忆,而对其他人来说,它们往往仅是一组无聊的、构图糟糕的、失焦的照片。
根据第二段中的“Yet by myself I didn’t have a clue how to go about getting some good shots. Added to this was the fact that there were crowds of tourists everywhere, blocking all the best views.”(然而,就我自己而言,我不知道如何才能拍出好照片。 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“The first thing Antonio told our group was that the secret to creating a good photographic image rather than just a snapshot (快照) is to first take a long look at what you want to photograph.”(安东尼奥告诉我们的第一件事是,要想拍出一张好的照片,而不仅仅是一张快照,秘诀是首先要长时间地看你想拍的东西。)

C
As summer begins, children get time off from school; offices get a little more empty.
D Who were likely to have a vacation mindset.
31. What might be the best title of this passage?
A. New activities brings benefits.
B. Vacation time should be extended.
C. More vacations cause more anxiety.
D. Shifting mindset about a plain time counts.
C 29. D 30. C 31. D
根据第一段“A vacation mindset (心态) is not hard to find. But it’s not always realistic. Maybe you aren’t granted so many vacation days. Maybe finances prohibit taking time off, as overtime hours are important to your personal bottom line. (度假心态并不难找到。但这并不总是现实的。也许你没有那么多假期。也许经济状况不允许你请假,因为加班时间对你个人的底线很重要。)”可知,作者在首段旨在展示度假的现实情况是怎样的。故选C。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词所在句中的this指代上文第二段中的观点。根据第二段“The good news, though, is that sometimes a plain old weekend can bring mental health benefits — if you treat it like a vacation.(不过,好消息是,如果你像度假一样对待它,有时一个普通的周末也能带来心理健康益处。)”
根据第四段“When they returned to work on Monday, those who had been assigned to take on the vacation mindset scored higher on happiness measures, even when the amount of money they spent was controlled for.(当他们周一回到工作岗位时,那些被分配采取度假心态的人在幸福感方面得分更高,即使他们花的钱是可控的。)”以及第五段“A follow-up study tracked what participants were thinking and doing throughout the weekend. And indeed, the people who had been instructed to have a vacation mindset did spend their time slightly differently from the people who were in “normal weekend” mode: The former did less housework, and spent more time in bed. But what seemed to drive the happiness most was not these subtle shifts in behavior; instead, it was the attitude of mindfulness that they gave to even “normal” weekend activities.(一项后续研究追踪了参与者在整个周末的想法和行为。
根据倒数第二段“So, it seems that happiness is boosted by savoring. Pausing, slowing down, and having a stance of gratitude for the present moment have always been at the heart of mindfulness, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the outcomes of such a mindset are quite positive.(所以,快乐似乎是通过品味来提升的。暂停,慢下来,对当下时刻心怀感激一直是正念的核心,所以这种心态的结果是非常积极的,这一点也不奇怪。)”和最后一段“The next time you have a free day, or even just a a free hour, think about ways to view it as a break from the ordinary. It just might make you feel better, even once you’re back at work.(下次当你有空闲的一天,或者只是一个小时的空闲时间,想办法把它看作是一个从日常生活中解脱出来的休息。它可能会让你感觉更好,即使你回去工作了。)”可推断,本文主要说明了通过转变度假心态,会带来不同的快乐感受。D项“改变对平淡时间的看法很重要。”符合主题,故选D。

A 33. D 34. C 35. B
根据第二段中““Sure enough,” she adds, “their moms remain a key social partner during this time.” (“当然,”她补充说,“在这段时间里,他们的妈妈仍然是一个重要的社交伙伴。”)”可知Elizabeth Lonsdorf认可这项新的研究发现,承认年轻的雄性黑猩猩成年后与母亲仍有重要联系。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“What’s more, losing their mothers after weaning (断奶), but before age 12, gets in the way of the ability of young chimps to win other males and reproduce. (更重要的是,在断奶后,但在12岁之前失去母亲,会妨碍小黑猩猩赢过其他雄性黑猩猩并繁殖后代的能力)”可知,当雄性黑猩猩在8岁时失去母亲,他可能很难打败其他雄性。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“To see whether this bond extends later into life, researchers followed 29 adolescent (9 to 15 years old) and young adult (16 to 20 years old) male chimps at a research site in Kibale National Park in Uganda and observed them from a distance for 3 years. (为了了解这种关系是否会延续到以后的生活中,研究人员在乌干达基巴莱国家公园的一个研究地点跟踪了29只青春期(9至15岁)和年轻成年(16至20岁)的雄性黑猩猩,并对它们进行了3年的远距离观察)”,以及该段和第五段对这些黑猩猩的行为的具体描述可推知,在研究过程中,研究人员通过观察记录了这些黑猩猩的社交互动。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Reddy所说的话“We really feel what it’s like to not be able to see our mothers when we want to in tough times. The importance of those bonds in our lives and the comfort we get from them have deep evolutionary roots. (我们真的能体会到,在困难时期,当我们想见到母亲时却不能见到她是什么感觉。这些纽带在我们生活中的重要性,以及我们从中得到的安慰,都有着深刻的进化根源)”可推知,Reddy是用人类的母子关系说明该研究的意义,即解释了其进化根源。故选B项。

We all postpone sometimes. Statistics show that 90 percent of university students will often put off studying for a test or writing an important paper until the night before. ____36____ This serious form of postponement can result in a student dropping out of school.
According to recent studies, there are three main reasons that students postpone. First, many have poor time-management skills and often try to do too much in too little time. In the end, these students often feel overwhelmed (应接不暇的) and will put off doing many things they need to. ____37____ These students will often avoid doing something because they don’t like it. A third reason is they are anxious about doing assignments (作业) well enough. ____38____
Do you recognize any of these signs in yourself? If so, you may want to do something about it. The following tips may be helpful.
●List things in life that are important to you.
●Choose realistic goals for yourself.
●____39____
●Budget your time wisely.
●Take the time to reward yourself.
If you believe that you are a chronic (长期的) postponer, you should try to get help before it is too late. ____40____ Be sure to keep yourself motivated, but don’t worry too much. Remember — we all postpone at times.
A. Talk to a friend, and discuss the problem.
B. Once you have set your goals, list them in the first place.
C. Many people put off doing things that they need to until it’s too late.
D. Another reason that students postpone is because they feel a subject is boring.
E. Twenty-five percent of university students can be considered as chronic postponers.
F. Another reason that students delay is because they have difficulty concentrating on an assignment.
G. These students often worry that their work will never be as good as it should be and fear failure of any kind.
E 37. D 38. G 39. B 40. A
前文“Statistics show that 90 percent of university students will often put off studying for a test or writing an important paper until the night before. (统计数据显示,90%的大学生经常把备考或写重要论文的时间推迟到考试前一天晚上。)”指出数据显示大多数大学生存在拖延行为,后文“This serious form of postponement can result in a student dropping out of school. (这种严重的拖延会导致学生辍学。)”指出严重的拖延导致的后果,因此E项“Twenty-five percent of university students can be considered as chronic postponers. (25%的大学生可以被认为是长期拖延者。)”符合语境,进一步指出一部分大学生是长期拖延者,承前启后,后文的This serious form of postponement指的是“长期拖延”。故选E。
前文“First, many have poor time-management skills and often try to do too much in too little time. In the end, these students often feel overwhelmed (应接不暇的) and will put off doing many things they need to. (首先,许多人的时间管理能力很差,经常试图在很少的时间内做太多的事情。最后,这些学生经常感到应接不暇,会推迟做很多他们需要做的事情。)”具体介绍学生拖延的第一个原因:糟糕的时间管理能力,后文“These students will often avoid doing something because they don’t like it. (这些学生通常会避免做一些事情,因为他们不喜欢。)”说明学生会因为不喜欢而避免做某些事,因此D项“Another reason that students postpone is because they feel a subject is boring. (学生拖延的另一个原因是他们觉得这门课很无聊。)”符合语境,指出学生拖延的第二个原因:觉得课程无聊,和前文是递进关系,引出后文,其中的boring和后文的they don’t like it呼应。故选D。
【38题详解】
前文“A third reason is they are anxious about doing assignments (作业) well enough. (第三个原因是他们急于把作业做得足够好。)”指出学生拖延的第三个原因:过于想很好地完成作业,因此G项“These students often worry that their work will never be as good as it should be and fear failure of any kind. 【高分句型2】 It was an eye-opening experience that left me grateful for the healthcare workers who tirelessly save lives.(运用了that引导的限定性定语从句,who引导的限定性定语从句)
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly, John slowed down and sat onto the ground with a sharp pain.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A reporter photographed this touching scene and posted it online.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Suddenly, John slowed down and sat onto the ground with a sharp pain. On spotting his painful look, I ran up to him as fast as a bolt of lightning. Much to my surprise, his ankle was sprained badly. In that split second, I tried to help him stand up and move forward, but he shook head to say no. In the meanwhile, he signed to me to run after the others so that I could win the first place. Suddenly, I was trapped in an instant dilemma. My strong desire to overtake John was flashing in my mind. But in an instant, I decided without hesitation to accompany him to take a rest. Then we ran slowly forward together. Although we were overtaken by others, a sense of relaxation was surging in my mind. The moment we finally crossed the finish line together, John cast a grateful look at me.
A reporter photographed this touching scene and posted it online. Immediately, such a big hit did the photo become that countless likes were flooding in. Numerous strangers sent emails to praise me, leaving me lost in thought. In fact, I was indecisively torn in the beginning, but the moment I decided to help John, I felt relaxed with birds warbling in the trees and the gentle wind stroking my face. Happily, I made the right choice and did the right thing. Surely, friendliness comes before competition.
