Boston University Summer Journalism Academy
The Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University offers high school students the chance to enhance their journalism skills and prepare for college. The academy provides two options: an on-campus program lasting three weeks for students with journalism experience, and a learn-from-home online program lasting two weeks for all experience levels. For students interested in photography, a special photojournalism track is available in both options.
New for 2024, on-campus students will have the opportunity for their stories to be considered for publication in the Daily Free Press, one of the nation’s top college newspapers.
Each option is structured into three parts: Classroom, Newsroom, and Guest Talks.
● Classroom: Each day begins with a review of journalism fundamentals in a college-style setting, using a university-level textbook for readings and assignments. Instructors cover topics such as story ideas, sources and research, interviewing, story structure, writing for broadcast and web, accuracy, and more.
● Newsroom: Students apply what they learn by reporting on real news events. They conduct interviews by phone, email, and video to cover a wide range of stories.
● Guest Talks: Students receive advice and insights from journalism experts on topics like radio reporting, media law, and studying journalism in college. On-campus students also visit city newsrooms, such as WBUR public radio and the Boston Globe, gaining invaluable real-world experience and networking opportunities.
Through these comprehensive learning experiences, students will not only improve their journalism skills but also be well-prepared for their future college studies. The academy aims to develop the next generation of journalists by providing them with the knowledge and practical experience they need to succeed.

I’m Vasco Salazar, a thirteen-year-old living in a coastal town in Portugal, where many make their living from fishing. My father, Paulo, is a fisherman, as were generations before him. Fishing is in my blood. I often wonder about my future: will I become a fisherman like my father, or will I pursue my dream of studying at university? I already help with the nets and catch, and my cousin Alfonso, who is nineteen, shares thrilling ocean adventure tales. My parents say he makes these stories more exciting to impress and encourage me to follow in his footsteps.
Fishing is hard and dangerous work, they warn. You spend your days wet, salty, and smelling of fish. “Explore different possibilities before deciding your path,” my father advises. “You were named after Vasco da Gama, the explorer who made Portugal a sea-trading power. Seek your own path.” Last week, as we waited for the fishing boats to return after a week at sea, the weather was calm and clear. When my father’s boat arrived, Alfonso and I pulled in the nets, heavy with a week’s worth of fish. Later, I helped my mother prepare a fish soup for dinner.
The following day, my father sent me to ask Carlos, the lighthouse keeper, about the weather. From his high viewpoint, Carlos has a keen understanding of the weather and life. He greeted me warmly, eager for company. “I want to be a fisherman,” I told Carlos, “but I also love learning. Maybe I’d be good at teaching or something else.” Carlos gestured broadly to the horizon. “It’s a big world with many opportunities. If you choose fishing now, you might limit yourself and miss out on education. Explore your options. Fishing will always be here.” We fell silent, and I asked about the weather. “When you can see the westernmost islands from here,” Carlos explained, “rain is coming.” Sure enough, fat raindrops soon began to fall.
After the storm, we searched the beach for washed-up treasures. Among the seaweed and debris, I found a chain with a compass. “Look!” Alfonso shouted. “A compass! Now Vasco can explore the world.” In that moment, I realized Carlos was right. I could always return to fishing, but the world was waiting for me to explore.
41. What does Vasco mean when he says fishing is in his blood?
A. He enjoys eating fish. B. He has natural talent for fishing.
C. Fishing is his family tradition. D. He spends a lot of time near water.
42. Why does Alfonso share thrilling ocean adventure tales with Vasco?
A. To inspire Vasco to become a fisherman. B. To convince Vasco to study at university.
C. To entertain Vasco with fictional stories. D. To teach Vasco about the ocean.
43. Why does Vasco’s father tell him he was named after Vasco da Gama?
A. To make fun of his first name.
B. To persuade him to explore his own future.
C. To help him feel more important than Alfonso.
D. To teach him a lesson in the history of Portugal.
44. Which is most likely to happen in the future?
A. Carlos will warn Vasco about the dangers of the sea.
B. Alfonso will quit fishing and become a lighthouse keeper.
C. Vasco’s family will leave Portugal.
D. Vasco will go to the university.
45. Which of these is the main conflict in this story?
A. Familiar against unfamiliar. B. Man against nature.
C. Old against young. D. Good against bad.
C
It’s human nature to enjoy playing. From board games to sports, games have been a significant part of human culture for a very long time. Since their invention in the mid-20th century, video games have become one of the most popular ways to have fun. In 2018, UK games spent an average of over seven hours a week playing, according to research by global network provider Limelight. But how much is too much? When does fun turn into an addiction? Are we addicted to video games?
“The strong desire to play never disappears,” said Sean - not his real name - on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme. His deep interest in gaming once led him to play for 48 hours straight. It consumed him to the point where he neglected his family and children, spending all his time on gaming and ignoring their needs, which ultimately led to losing them, his job, and his home. Since then, he has entered a rehabilitation center, and although he slipped back into gaming once or twice, he has been doing well for the last 14 months.
Sean is not alone. The UK Addiction Treatment group reported that the number of people seeking treatment for gaming addiction grew from four in 2014 to 22 in 2018. In 2018 the World Health Organization classified gaming addiction as an illness. In the UK, an investigation into technology addiction by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee included statements from people who said they were addicted to games. One, Matus Mikus, said, “games are naturally addictive.”
However, the association for UK Interactive Entertainment told the committee that there was not enough evidence to support the claim of addiction. They argued that gaming could be beneficial, for example, by developing thinking skills. In fact, in a 2018 BBC article, Dr. Rajin Chowdhury, who works in an aesthetic and intensive care at Sheffield Teaching Hospital, shared a similar view. Gaming, he said, made him more skillful with his hands, improved his ability to use his hands and eyes together effectively, and helped with operations performed remotely by looking at a screen, especially when the controls were complex.
Are video games addictive? The answer is unclear. As with many things, balance is important. The games themselves may not be the problem, but letting them negatively impact our lives certainly is. With that in mind, play well, have fun, and remember to take regular breaks.
46. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To criticize the impact of video games on society.
B. To introduce the topic of video games and their popularity.
C. To provide information about how much people play games.
D. To explain the history of video games.
47. The underlined word “neglected” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. Ignored B. Supported C. Watched D. Disliked
48. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?
A. The benefits of gaming. B. The popularity of video games.
C. The fun of playing video games. D. The rise in gaming addiction cases.
49. What does the association claim about gaming?
A. It is harmful. B. It causes addiction. C. It has benefits. D. It is expensive.
50. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Video Games: A New Form of Entertainment
B. Video Games: Addiction or Benefit?
C. The Dark Side of Video Game Addiction
D. How to Deal with Video Game Addiction

阅读下列短文并回答问题。
Thanksgiving Day was near, and the first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment—to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful. Most of the class might be considered not very well-off, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional treats of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students’ art. And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of sadness, weak and melancholic. As other children played during break time, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.
Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. And so the discussion went—until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and said softly, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.
Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.
In fact, people might not always say “thanks,” but they’ll remember the hand that reaches out.

【答案】
Once upon a time, a farmer worried that his crops were not growing fast enough. He thought his plants were too slow, so he pulled up the young plants a bit each day to help them grow faster. However, instead of growing, the young plants became weak and died because their roots were damaged.
This story teaches us that being impatient and trying to make things happen faster can lead to failure. Like the farmer, if we rush things and ignore natural processes, we might cause more harm than good. It reminds me to be patient and trust that with steady care and effort, growth will happen in its own time.
