Does your class use email? Have you ever tried to write a story for the school newspaper and send it in by email? Email is used for everything, and it makes life easier. But do you know who invented it?
The man who invented email was Ray Tomlinson, a US engineer. He sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 74. Back in 1971, Tomlinson was working on a way to send messages from one computer to another. He needed a symbol to separate users’ names from their computers’ names. The “@” sign was not commonly used and was on all keyboards, making it the perfect choice.
Tomlinson said, “The ‘@’ sign made the most sense. It showed where the user was... at.” For example, “Alex@schoolnewssite” would reach Alex at the school newspaper’s website. This was the early form of email.
Interestingly, Tomlinson didn’t remember the first message he sent. It was probably something simple like “QWERTYUIOP”, the first row of letters on a keyboard.
Today, the “@” sign is also used in many places in addition to email. Social media like Weibo and WeChat use it at the beginning of users’ names. So, even if we don’t use email someday, Tomlinson’s invention will still be with us. He not only changed the way we communicate but also saved the “@” sign for new uses.
In short, Tomlinson’s invention has had a huge influence on our communication. It has made it possible for people around the world to send messages quickly and easily. Email has become an important tool for both personal and business communication. So, the next time you send an email, thank Ray Tomlinson for his brilliant ideas.

D The “@” sign is difficult to understand.
18. What do we know about Ray Tomlinson according to the passage?

B. He started a social media platform.
C. He used the “@” sign for email addresses.
D. He was a teacher who taught about computers.
19. How is the “@” sign used today besides email?
A. It’s used in some math problems
B. It’s used to show the time on clocks.

Compared to the longer winter and summer holidays, many forget about spring break. It is a whole week off from school for many students in the US. Usually in March or April, spring break is a time when US students often take part in all kinds of activities.
North Carolina, the state where I live, has great places for hiking and many sunny beaches. My family takes spring break as a chance to enjoy outdoor activities as the weather gets warmer. During this time, we head outside to find new hiking places nearby and get close to nature.
Those who are not as outdoorsy will choose a more relaxing and unhurried spring break experience. Going to nearby beaches, shopping and attending local events become their main choices.
Though students don’t usually have homework over spring break, many upperclassmen (高年级学生) are still busy getting ready for summer internships (实习) or graduation. Spring break is also a good time for personal growth.

Whether enjoying nature, having fun on the beach, or focusing on personal development, students make the most of this time of respite (喘息).
