When most girls might be playing with toys Hailey Fort was working with her building tools. In 2015, with the help of her parents, the nine-year-old girl built her first “mobile sleeping shelter” for her friend Edward.
Edward was not the typical person you’d want your nine-year-old daughter to get along with, but Hailey was not a typical girl. Edward was homeless.
Here is how it all started. In 2011, when Hailey was only five, she saw a homeless man on the street and thought it would be nice to buy him a sandwich. She and her mom did so. The man was Edward, who was out of work. From there Hailey thought, “Why give one person a sandwich when you can feed many more with a garden?” So she decided to help homeless people by providing them with food and shelter.
Along with her parents, Hailey planted vegetables in a small garden. She donated vegetables in 2014. In 2015, she hoped to harvest more vegetables to help feed local homeless people.
From that garden grew the shelter idea. “I don’t really want Edward to be rained on,” said Hailey.
Hailey and her parents were supported by many people, including Lowes Home Improvement, who knocked 50% off the cost of supplies for Hailey’s shelter. Besides, Hailey received $3,000 from Together Rising for her efforts. She planned to use the money to build more shelters, so that not just her friend Edward, but some of his friends will also have warm, dry places to sleep. “It just doesn’t seem right that there are homeless people. I think it important that everyone has a place to live,” said Hailey.
Hailey said she wanted to be a philanthropist (慈善家) when she grew up.

A. the sad story of Edward. B. Hailey’s happy childhood.
C. Hailey’s friendship with Edward. D. learning to build shelters.
40. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Hailey received a lot of support from the local government.
B. Few parents wanted their kids to make friends with the homeless.
C. Besides Hailey, there were many other girls working with building tools.
D. All the homeless people in Hailey’s hometown now have places to live.

The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and for the environment. Those findings come from a new report in the journal Nature. There are ways to solve this diet-health-environment problem. But they will require a change in eating habits. And what we eat can be a product of culture, personal taste, price and ease.
David Tilman is a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota. In the study, he examined information from 100 countries to identify (确定) what people ate and how diet affected health. Mr Tilman noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.
The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tilman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease and some cancers.
And, a diet bad for human beings, it seems, is also bad for the environment. As the world’s population grows, experts say more forests and tropical areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for grazing (放养) cattle. These areas will be needed to meet the increasing demand for food. More greenhouse gas is likely to be released in the future from agriculture because of this dietary shift than all the greenhouse gas that right now comes out of all the cars, and all of the airplanes, boats and ships, all forms of transportation. So the change in diet is likely to be worse for the world for climate warming than all the transportation sources.
Mr Tilman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health, “a trilemma.” This is a play on the word “dilemma” — a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.
43. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. The Western diet is not worth recommending.
B. The westerners are changing their living habits.
C. The spread of Western diet may affect food price.
D. The Western culture influences people’s attitude to the environment.
44. The change in diet can cause ______.
A. an increasing demand for more food B. more greenhouse gas to be released
C. transportation form to change D. the loss of more farmland
45. The underlined part “a trilemma” in the last paragraph refers to ______.
A. a word play B. a difficult choice C. a good method D. a diet program
Ⅴ. 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
You may think kids are getting more homework than ever before. If so, think again. A new study by Brookings’ Brown Center on Education Policy shows that today’s students have no more homework than their parents did when they were in school.
The study’s author, Tom Loveless, reviewed surveys taken by kids and parents about how much homework young students have. The results showed that the typical elementary student has 30-45 minutes of homework each night. The average high-schooler has about an hour. These numbers have remained the same since 1984.
In a set of guidelines published by the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the amount of time students should spend on homework is their grade level multiplied by ten minutes. For example, a third-grader should have 30 minutes of homework, a fifth-grader 50 minutes, and so on. Loveless, who was a sixth-grade teacher in the 1980s, says this system has stayed consistent into the 21st century.
Homework is an important part of a student’s education. Some teachers argue that homework prepares kids for state tests and for college. They worry that a lighter homework load will put kids at a disadvantage. “Homework has benefits that go well beyond what’s going on in school,” says Harris Cooper, a University of Missouri psychology professor who has studied homework’s effect on test scores. Kids learn to be organized, manage their time and master new skills without a teacher’s help.
Teachers give two reasons for assigning a lot of homework. First, they say, the government now requires schools to meet higher-than-ever achievement goals for students. Second, they know many parents want their children to be able to get into the nation’s best colleges and universities. These parents believe homework is a way to ensure students are learning at their full capacity (能力).

When most girls might be playing with toys, Hailey Fort was working with her building tools.
39. The underlined word “it” most probably refers to “______”.
A. the sad story of Edward.
41. Lowes Home Improvement supported Hailey by ______.
A. giving her 3,000 dollars. B. helping her design the mobile shelters.
C. building mobile shelters for the homeless. D. charging her less for the building materials.
42. Which of the following is the CORRECT order according to the passage?
a. Hailey built mobile shelters.
b. Hailey started her small garden.
c. Hailey made friends with Edward.
d. Hailey bought a sandwich for a homeless man.
A. d-c-b-a B. c-d-a-b C. a-c-d-b D. b-d-a-c

43 What can we learn from the first paragraph?
【答案】43. A 44. B 45. B
