In a world that often cares about being famous and having money, some great people still work
quietly without others noticing.Take Maria Gonzalez,a countryside school teacher in Mexico, for
example. For over 25 years, she has walked 10 kilometers every day to reach a small village school,
where she teaches 40 children of different ages-carrying a heavy bag of teaching materials and fresh
fruits for her students each time.
Maria doesn't just teach reading and math.Besides fixing broken desks and cooking free meals
for students who can't afford lunch, she even teaches parents simple skills to support their families.
Last winter, when several children couldn't afford warm coats, she made warm scarves and gloves for

Have you ever wondered how some animals scem to recognize your face casily? This interesting
question was one of the key research projects carried out by Chinese-American scientist Doris Tsao.
Tsao's research team from the California Institute of Technology focused their experiments on
monkeys, which have brains similar to humans. After a lot of studics, they made an important
discovery:there are about200 special nerve cells(神经细胞)in monkcys'brains(大脑)that are
responsible for recognizing faces. Each of these nerve cells can identify different facial features, such
as the general shape of the face, the distance between the two eyes, the color of the skin.By
combining all the information collected by these cells, monkeys can form a clear image of a person's
face.
To figure out how monkeys "see"buman faces in their minds, the scientists designed a clever
experiment.First, they showed monkeys pictures of various human faces. At the same time, they used
special tools to record the activity of each face-recognizing nerve cell in the monkeys'brains.Then.
with the help of advanced computer software, they analyzed the recorded brain activity data and
successfully recreated the faces that the monkeys were "seeing".
As reported by the BBC,when the original photos shown to the monkeys were put next to the
computer-recreated faces, the two sets of images were surprisingly similar.Although the experiment
was conducted on monkeys, scientists strongly believe that the human brain recognizes faces in a
similar way.
This technology could also be used in the future. For example, police might be able to recreate
the face of a lawbreaker by recording people's brain activity,Tsao told the Daily Mail.
61.What is the main research question of Doris Tsao's project?
A.How monkeys see and understand human looks.
B.How some animals recognize human faces.
C.How to teach monkeys to notice human faces.
D.How monkey brains and human brains are different
62.Why did Tsao's team choose monkeys for their experiments?
Monkeys have more brain cells than other animals
B.Monkeys live well in the lab for a long time.
C.Monkeys'brains are similar to human brains.
D.Monkeys can tell others how they feel.
63.What is the function ofthe 200 special nerve cells in monkeys'brains?
A.They help monkeys recognize human faces.
B.They make monkeys'brains work faster.
C.They store all the photos monkeys see.
D.They help monkeys remember many faces.
高一英语试卷第8页(共10页)
64.What did the scientists do to recreate the faces monkeys"saw"?
A.They had monkeys draw the faces.
B.They took photos of brain parts.
C.They compared monkey and human memories.
D.They recorded cell activity and analyzed it.
65.What is a possible future use of the research technology?
A.Helping police make pictures of bad people.
B.Teaching animals to know different colors.
C.Making computers take better photos.
D.Helping doctors treat brain problems.

there, and he wondered if he'd ever find the courage to step out of his comfort zone.
One day,Jason's teacher told the class about a class project:each student had to give a
presentation on a topic of their choice.Jason's heart felt heavy. The thought of standing in front of his
classmates, with all eyes fixed on him, made his hands sweat. He considered asking for a different task,
but something inside him stopped him-a quiet voice encouraging him to try.
That evening,Jason sat in his room, staring at his notes. His hands shook as he picked up the pen
to write his speech. He remembered his father's words:"Growth comes from challenges, son. You'll
never know what you're capable of unless you try."Inspired by this,Jason decided to face his fear.He
practiced his presentation in front of the mirror, then in front of his younger sister, who cheered him on.
