It’s dinner time. Susan Green sets the table. Her husband Michael and two children take their seats at the table, and an awkward silence descends (降临). 14-year-old Carolyn plays restlessly with a fork, while 16-year-old Billy frowns(皱眉) at the dish in front of him. Meanwhile, Michael reaches absently for an object that isn’t there, an unmistakable look of disappointment on his face. The Greens are experiencing their first evening without electronic devices (电子设备 ), as part of a month-long experiment to see if going without technology will make them a happier family.
The use of electronic devices has increased greatly over the past 10 years, and recent studies suggest that they may be responsible for decreased levels of happiness. Susan Green had noticed these worrying tendencies in her own family. “I was often telling Billy to turn off his game and go and get some fresh air, or Carolyn to stop chatting with her friends and get some sleep. What worried me more is that when they invited their friends over, I would find them all sitting together looking at their phones and not talking,” she says.
Susan’s concerns made her carry out her own research into the issue. When she came across an article in a weekend newspaper about people who gave up using electronic devices for a month, she was eager to try it with her own family. However, she realised that it was going to take more than reading an article to persuade them. “I found some of the research mentioned in the article very worrying, but I doubted if my family would be convinced, ” she says. “But I wanted to avoid financial rewards(金钱奖励), as they felt a bit too individualistic.” In the end, the promise of a fun family day out at a theme park persuaded the Greens to go tech-free for a whole month.
The Green family’s experiment is now over, but they have made a promise to try and stick to some of the rules that they established during their tech-free month. Susan feels delighted with the results of the experiment and is certain that it helped her to achieve her aim of improving her family’s happiness.

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place
Diet Coke diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet. . . We are surrounded by the word "diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in food labels.
On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.
29. From Paragraph 1, we learn that _________.
A. diet products fail to bring out people's potential
B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products
C. diet products are misleading people
D. people are fed up with diet products
30. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _________.
A. try out a variety of diet foods
B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods
C. pay attention to their own eating habits
D. watch their weight rather than their diet
31. In Paragraph 3, "gain comes without pain" probably means _________.
A. losing weight is effortless
B. it costs a lot to lose weight
C. diet products bring no pain
D. diet products are free from calories
32. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
C: central point P: point Sp: sub-point(次要点) C: conclusion

In written English, punctuation is vital to disambiguate (消除歧义) the meaning of sentences.___33___
It is known that the ancient Greeks wrote their texts without any difference between small letters and capitals and they didn’t have punctuation marks. As they read, they just put pauses where they fit best.___34___A sentence was read from left to right. The next one was read right to left, and then left to right again, etc.
In the 3rd century BCE a librarian named Aristophanes, chief of staff at the city’s famous library, found the need to use signs to help understand a text more easily. Aristophanes’ breakthrough was to suggest that readers could add notes to their documents, relieving the unbroken stream of text with dots.
Early seventeenth century writers appeared to use colons (冒号), semicolons, and commas interchangeably ___35___. In contrast, writers of the late seventeenth century tried to make specific rules for the use of the colon, semicolon and comma.
Punctuation is constantly evolving, because language should change with the needs of the times. The purpose of punctuation is to make reading and writing easy by indicating the necessary pauses, thus making meaning clear and preventing misunderstanding. ___36___ Wherever you pause, you need a punctuation mark.
A. But how did it all begin?
B. What are the rules of punctuation?
C. Also at this time, sentences switched directions.
D. Punctuation is used to create sense and stress in sentences.
E. The best way to check your punctuation is to read writing aloud.
F. Their use depended upon pauses for breath rather than grammatical rules.

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place
Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet. .
A try out a variety of diet foods
B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods
C. pay attention to their own eating habits
D. watch their weight rather than their diet
31. In Paragraph 3, "gain comes without pain" probably means _________.
A. losing weight is effortless
B. it costs a lot to lose weight
C. diet products bring no pain
D. diet products are free from calories
32. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

从第三段可以看出,每次我们喝下标明不含热量的饮料,就给我们一个暗示,我们不会增加体重,减肥是很容易的事(we don’t have to work to get results)另外,本段最后半句(and that life can be without resistance and struggle)也说明划线部分的含义。故选A.
例如小题3要求猜测出gain comes without pain的含义,就是根据前句we don’t have to work to get results和后句and that life can be without resistance and struggle的内容提示。从而推测出gain comes without pain为“减肥不费吹灰之力”之意。

In the 3rd century BCE, a librarian named Aristophanes, chief of staff at the city’s famous library, found the need to use signs to help understand a text more easily.
