I was bom missing my left hand, yet I learned to adapt. One of my earliest memories is my father
trying to teach me to tie my shoes.I gently pushed him aside and figured out a way to do it with one
hand.My parents tried to make me feel ordinary, but the reality was inescapable.
When I was 13,an age when kids are already very self-conscious,I remembered getting on the bus
and one of the other kids stared just a little too long at my left arm.I felt a sudden urge to hide my
hand.I had decided that if people knew about my missing hand, they would not want to be around me
anymore.
Making friends was challenging enough, but finding love was particularly discouraging. As I started
dating,I made efforts to hide my difference.Eventually we'd reach a point in the relationship where I
knew I had to tell the truth.I'd think over the "big reveal"and build it up in my mind for days. When I
had gathered the courage,I let out my secret over the phone and hung up in a panic.Even when I
received a call,I couldn't face discussing it,relying on the answering machine.
Everyone I shared this with-friend,co-worker or boyfriend-said kind things like,"You
shouldn't hide it."or "It's no big deal."But their words didn't matter to me.The only words that
really mattered were the ones I was telling myself, that story of how I was unworthy of love.
At 28,tired of hiding,I met someone special. For the first time,I allowed someone to really hold,
look at,take pictures of,touch and love my limb-love me.
That relationship ended after ten years, but I kept the self-love and compassion I learned from it.
From that point on,I saw my difference as something unique and beautiful about me,something that
should be shown,not hidden.

Thirty years ago, while working on a right whale research project in the Bay of Fundy,Canada,I
witnessed a remarkable sight.A male right whale with mud on its head, indicating it had been feeding at
the bottom, came up to breathe and rest.Just before diving again,it let out a huge mass of poop(
)The water was filled with poop that looked like red floating bricks and had a strong, unpleasant
smell. If it got on your clothes, you'd have to discard them as it couldn't be washed out.
This initial encounter later inspired me to conduct global search for whale poop, taking me from
Iceland to Mexico,Alaska, and Hawaii.Right whale poop has a particularly strong and awful smell, but
I've come to appreciate it.Whale poop provides valuable insights. It shows what whales eat, their
hormones,if they're ready to reproduce,how stressed they are,what's in their gut(),and their
family tree.It also helps us assess the level of mercury and pollution in the ocean.
This experience set the path for my research career. Two years after seeing whale poop for the first
time,I took an ocean ecology class and learned about the biological pump.Phytoplankton()
grows near the ocean surface and through the food chain, nutrients can sink to the deep sea. However,I
realized that right whales, which feed at depth and poop at the surface, likely bring nutrients like iron
and so on back up.This led to the concept of the "whale pump",which does the opposite of the
biological pump by pumping nutrients back to the surface. These nutrients can be absorbed by
phytoplankton and flow through the ocean food chain. This is important because some people in Japan,
Norway, and Iceland think whales eat "our fish"and cause fish numbers to drop. The whale pump
shows that the relationship is more complex and that whales might actually increase fish populations.
Whale poop not only helps us understand the present ocean but also gives us a look into the past
when there were more whales.Restoring whales and their nutrient pathways could help make the ocean
more diverse.
28.What does the underlined word "discard"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Abandon.
·B.Wash.
C.Keep.
D.Appreciate.

A.It provides a remarkable sight.
B.It makes the author travel a lot.
C.It looks like red floating bricks.
D.It makes precious insights available.
30.What is the effect of the "whale pump"?
A.Nutrients float to the surface.
B.Fisheries experience a decline.
C.The ocean food chain is threatened.
D.The environment is polluted severely.
31.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To describe the abnormal behavior of right whales.
B.To explain the ecological importance of whale poop.
C.To argue against the idea that whales harm fisheries.
D.To discuss how we can understand the present ocean.

A Queensland University of Technology(QUT)research team has taken inspiration from the brains
at
of insects and animals for more energy-efficient robotic navigation.
装
The research, led by Dr Hussaini, along with Professor Milford and Dr Fischer from the QUT
t
Centre for Robotics, was published in IEEE Transactions on Robotics. They came up with a novel place
recognition algorithm()using Spiking Neural Networks(SNNs).
n
"SNNs are artificial neural networks that imitate how biological brains process information using
t
brief,separate signals,much like how neurons()in animal brains communicate,"Dr Hussaini
r
said."These networks are particularly well-suited for neuromorphic hardware-specialized computer
ir
hardware that copies biological neural system-enabling faster processing and significantly reduced
energy consumption.
st
Modem robots still struggle to navigate and operate in complex, unknown environments. They also
)
often rely on AI-based navigation systems that need a lot of computing power and energy for training.
I
Dr Fischer said,"Animals are really good at getting around in large, dynamic environments. They
n
do it efficiently and reliably."He thinks this research is a step closer to making navigation systems
e
inspired by biology. These systems might one day be better than today's conventional approaches.
y
The system developed by the QUT team uses small neural network parts to recognize specific places
from images. These parts were put together to make a group of spiking networks to create a navigation
system that can learn to move around in large environments.
"Using a series of images instead of single pictures enabled an improvement of 41 percent in place
st
recognition accuracy, allowing the system to adapt to appearance changes over time and across different
n
seasons and weather conditions,"Professor Milford said.
"This research can help make more efficient and reliable navigation systems for autonomous robots
in energy-limited environments. It's especially good for things like space exploration and disaster
recovery, where using energy well and being quick to respond are critical,Dr Hussaini said.

Progress in life is all about reinvention.Whenever you want to change, reinvention is what allows
you to continue exploring new parts of yourself.36
See yourself outside yourself.
Imagine you are a sculptor.A sculptor looks at his or her piece of stone and endlessly questions new
ways to shape it.And if he or she thinks of something to change, there is no emotional attachment.
37 This is how you need to see yourself-as a work of art, always in progress.
Practice every day,no matter what.
Change is not something you do some days and then take a break from other days.38 It
requires daily devotion,to the point where that new habit takes the place of an old one and no longer
requires conscious effort.
Surround yourself with people who will tell you the truth.
If everyone around you is telling you "yes",then you have a serious problem. You need people
who are going to challenge and question you.39 Feedback is essential for personal growth.
40
You will never become the person you want to be by continuing to be the person you currently are.
Growth's only request is that you step out of your comfort zone. That's it.Unless you are willing to take
that risk and to take that uncomfortable step into the unknown, you will forever stay exactly where you are.
A.They just do it.
B.Be what you are.
C.It is a shift in lifestyle.
D.Be ready to take risks.
E.Instead, like an artist, just get to work.
F.You need to look for a way to reinvent yourself.
G.You need people who won't be afraid to tell you the truth.

As the sun was sinking in the west, painting the sky in colors of orange and pink,a group of young
environmental enthusiasts gathered in the heart of the campus. These passionate individuals, part of the
Green Earth Society, had been tirelessly planning an eco-friendly fair to raise awareness about
sustainability in their community.
The event was just around the corner when they received unexpected news-a competitive group,
the Nature Conservation Club whose leader was John, was hosting a similar event on the same day in a
nearby park.Concem arose among the Green Earth Society members as they realized this could split the
attendees and reduce the impact of both initiatives.
"We can't change the date now,"expressed Sarah,a dedicated member known for her creative
solutions."But we can't let our causes suffer either."Mary,a thoughtful soul in the group, weighed
silently, recognizing the importance of unity in such situations.Driven by her determination to make a
difference,Mary tried hard to find a solution. She spent hours researching ways to cooperate with the
Nature Conservation Club, understanding that together they could achieve far more than apart.
The following day,Mary presented her proposal to the Green Earth Society."What if we combine
our events?"she suggested."By combining our efforts,we can increase our messages, attract more
participants, and ensure both environmental causes receive the support they deserve."The members
exchanged uncertain looks, unsure of how the opponent club would respond."It's a challenging move,
Mary,but how will we convince them?"questioned Mark,a doubtful member.Mary,with a firm
resolve, replied,"I'll speak with their leader and illustrate the advantages of a cooperative event."
Despite the challenges that lay ahead,Mary's belief in the power of cooperation never changed. She was
determined to bridge the gap, unite the two groups, and create a stronger front for environmental
advocacy in their community.
