To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains, but actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun! Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honour. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was commonly used in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.
During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered as a symbol of power. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France and later in England.
By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas did not change much in style during all this time, though they became much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that women’s umbrellas began to be made in a whole variety of colours.
21. According to this passage, the umbrella was probably first used in ancient________.

When I first started high school, I felt nervous and unsure about everything. Now, four years later, I feel proud and thankful for all I have experienced. Looking back, I want to share some important lessons I’ve learned.
At the beginning, I discovered that having a good group of friends is really important. In my freshman year, I joined several clubs and met people who liked the same things I did. These friendships brought me happiness and support throughout high school.
One of the hardest times for me was in my junior year when I struggled in a tough math class. Instead of giving up, I decided to ask my teacher for extra help and spent more time studying. This taught me that asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a smart thing to do.
I also learned that finding the right balance between schoolwork and extracurricular activities can be difficult. Sometimes, I felt stressed because of all the homework and my comments (投入) to sports and volunteering. I realized that it was important to prioritize my tasks and manage my time well.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned is discovering who I am and what I believe in. Through both good and bad experiences, I have grown as a person. As I get ready to graduate, I feel prepared to face new challenges and follow my dreams. High school has been an unforgettable part of my life, and I am thankful for every moment.
24. How did the author feel at the beginning of high school?
A. Confident and excited. B. Anxious and uncertain.
C. Bored and uninterested. D. Relaxed and calm.
25. What role did friendship play during the author’s high school years?
A. It was a source of stress and conflict. B. It affected the author’s academic performance.
C. It provided emotional support and strength. D. It had nothing to do with personal growth.
26. What was one of the biggest challenges the author faced during junior year?
A. Struggling with a difficult math course. B. Deciding which college to apply to.
C. Managing relationships with friends. D. Choosing between extracurricular activities.
27. What is the main theme of the passage?
A. The importance of academic achievement.
B. The benefits of extracurricular activities.
C. Personal growth and self- discovery through high school experiences.
D. The difficulties of making friends in a new environment.
C
It’s a warm summer afternoon. You’re cooking up the catch of the day over a campfire. Suddenly, a few raindrops fall on your arms, and before you know it, the sky opens up. Then you hear what sounds like thunder in the distance. What should you do? Your tent is close by and would offer shelter (庇护) from the pouring rain. There’s a campsite picnic shelter a few minutes down the path. And then you remember that your car is parked down the road. What’s your safest choice to make sure you and your families are safe?
It’s a common question for many hikers and campers, especially when they are camping during summer months. Heading to your car is almost always the safest choice. On the one hand, your tent and a picnic shelter will keep you dry, but they offer little or no protection against lightning. Your car, on the other hand, will keep you dry and protect you from lightning strikes. Protecting yourself against possible lightning strikes is very important; lightening kills an average of 62 people in the US each year. If you keep all of the windows and doors closed in your car, you’ll be able to return to your campsite safely.
Of course, if you’re going backpacking (背包旅行), not car camping, and you’re deep in the woods, your car won’t be a good choice. So, what should you do if your car is far away and there’s no other safe shelter nearby? First, you’ll have to make sure that tree branches or other objects don’t fall on you or your campsite. Then you’ll have to get in a safe position to avoid lightning, or flash flood conditions. What else should you do?
28. To avoid lightning in a storm, you’d better________.
A. go into your tent quickly B. cook up the catch of the day over a campfire
C. run into a campsite picnic shelter at once D. get into your car and return to your campsite later
29. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Young people like backpacking best. B. Lightning is dangerous for campers.
C. Car camping is a good choice for deep woods. D. Camping during summer is very popular.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It is important to learn to protect yourself when camping.
B. Backpacking is not a good choice for campers.
C. People should never camp deep in the woods.
D. People should not go camping alone.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The meaning of camping. B. How to live through a storm when camping.
C. How to travel safely. D. Car camping is the safest.
D
After overcoming a severe stroke (中风) at just 22 months old, a young woman is taking to the Internet to show people how she lives with only one working hand and inspire other stroke and injury survivors to become more independent.
Chiara Beer, 27, who lives in Winchester, suffered a stroke as a baby which left her with lasting effects and a lifelong disability. She now lives with right-sided hemiplegia (偏瘫) — a condition that results in weakness and lack of movement in one side of the body.
Growing up with this disability as she got older, Chiara realized there was a huge lack of resources and information for young stroke survivors on the Internet and it was unable to find anyone else who was experiencing the similar things on her, so she decided to start sharing some relevant content on social media.
The determined 27-year-old began posting videos, sharing more about her own story of stroke survival and showing her followers various aspects of her day-to-day life, living with only one working arm, for example, how she drives using a specially adapted car and how technology helps her to read and write, other things like tying her hair with one hand, doing up the button on her jeans or applying her make-up.
She received a huge outpouring of love and support from her viewers, including messages of love from other stroke survivors and people who suffer from other similar disabilities, thanking her for showing them some hacks and tricks on how to become a little more independent.
Chiara admitted that she loves knowing that she is able to offer support to other young stroke survivors, saying, “It makes me feel happy that I can help so many people.” She added, “I want to help raise awareness about young people having strokes and also I want to help young people to find a way to be able to be independent. As for me, this has always been my main goal: to be independent.”
32. What is the after-effect of Chiara’s stroke?
A. Unable to drive a car. B. Unable to use his hands.
C. Unable to move his body freely. D. Unable to communicate with others.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The disabled are willing to share their life skills.
B. Stroke survivors face many challenges in their daily life.
C. There was much information about stroke treatment online.
D. Young stroke survivors had little guidance to turn to online.
34. Why were other stroke survivors grateful to Chiara?
A. Her story led them to have faith in life.
B. She taught them to cure their disabilities.
C. Her experience inspired them to live on their own.
D. She served as a role model for them to live ambitiously.
35. What can we learn from Chiara’s story?
A. Roses given, fragrance in hand. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

87. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In my thirty-year teaching profession, one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr Rowe. I was lucky enough to teach fourth grade together with him.
Mr. Rowe had endless patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I had ever seen. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him:“Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom. So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball during the break. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe commented, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; when he knew the answer, he raised his hand; when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful. It was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右:
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school.

Then you’ll have to get in a safe position to avoid lightning, or flash flood conditions. What else should you do?(当然,如果你是背包旅行,而不是汽车露营,而且你在树林深处,你的车就不是一个好的选择。

Growing up with this disability, as she got older, Chiara realized there was a huge lack of resources and information for young stroke survivors on the Internet and it was unable to find anyone else who was experiencing the similar things on her, so she decided to start sharing some relevant content on social media.

【36题详解】
根据上文“Some people think that running is hard. I once thought that too.(有些人认为跑步很难,我曾经也这么认为。)”和下文“Here’s why it is such an easy activity to start and stick to.(这就是为什么这是一个很容易开始和坚持的活动。)”可知,设空处表明作者现在不认为跑步是很难的运动,即跑步是简单的运动。所以设空处与上文构成转折关系,选项G:But if you work out properly, it is easy and wonderful.(但是如果你运动得当,就很简单也很好。)符合语境。故选G。
【37题详解】

【39题详解】
根据段落小标题“The gear (装备) is simple.(装备很简单)”可知,接下来的段落主要讲述的为跑步的装备的内容。选项C:It is important to have proper running shoes.(有一双合适的跑鞋很重要。)中的“shoes”与上文的“gear”呼应。故选C。
【40题详解】
根据上文“And in fact, running around new cities when traveling is great fun.(事实上,在新的城市里跑步旅行很有趣。)”可知,作者认为旅游时在陌生的城市里跑步很有趣,因为那是了解一个地方的极好的方式。选项E:That is a wonderful way to get to know a place(这是了解一个地方的好方法。)符合语境。故选E。

第二节(满分5分)
87. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In my thirty-year teaching profession one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr Rowe.
Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Many years later, Mr. Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the army uniform.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school. All the teachers filled the sidewalk, waving goodbye to the kids. But on that particular day, Steven walked slowly to the bus, his head down, tears in his eyes. He boarded the bus reluctantly, hesitated, and then ran back off the bus to hug Mr. Rowe. “I don’t want to leave you.” He sobbed. With red-rimmed eyes, Mr. Rowe comforted him, “I will miss you, too.”
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Mr. Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the army uniform. The young man stood tall and proud. It was Steven! Mr. Rowe and I couldn’t believe our eyes. He saluted and hugged Mr. Rowe tightly! “I have come back to school today just to say thanks to you!” It is my hope that every teacher is blessed with such a wonderful experience of a former student coming back to say, simply to say a very simple THANKS.
