Andrew Konde, a second-year student at Kenya’s Strathmore University, was inspired to start learning kung fu as a child after watching martial arts movies. But what began as a hobby has since become a way of life for Konde, who is now the chairman of the university’s Titan Martial Arts club.
As a child, Konde was captivated by the skills of martial arts legends like Jackie Chan. When he was admitted to Strathmore University in 2022, his passion for kung fu deepened upon joining the martial arts club. Through dedication and hard work, he rose to become the club’s chairman, leading his team to victories at national martial arts championships including a second-place finish at the All-Africa University Games in 2023.
“Kung fu promotes better health and fitness, improved coordination (协调性) and higher self-esteem (自尊). These are essential qualities for a happier, longer life. That’s why I love it,” Konde said.
Konde has also earned silver and bronze medals in local competitions since he began practicing kung fu two years ago. He sees 2023 as the highlight of his kung fu journey, being named one of Kenya’s top competitors in the featherweight category and competing in five championships.
Kung fu, which originated in China and is a key part of its traditional culture, has grown in popularity in Kenya, especially among school-age children. They are drawn to it for its ability to keep them fit as well as its lessons in self-defense and self-discipline.
Kevin Obonyo, an economics lecturer and kung fu instructor at Strathmore University, said the growing enthusiasm for kung fu across Africa can be attributed to the strengthening of China-Africa relations solidified through initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative.
“We’ve seen significant progress in sectors such as agriculture, communications, construction, manufacturing (制造业), culture, sports and people-to-people exchanges," Obonvo said.

Are you afraid of answering the phone?
A trending topic that has emerged on Sina Weibo recently is why young people dislike answering phone calls, leading to heated discussions.
“Once the phone rings, I become anxious. I put it aside and wait for the other person to hang up,” an internet user from Shandong shared her reaction to the phone ringing, one of the most popular ways young people deal with phone calls.
However, it was different in the past when everyone waited in line in front of telephone booths to make calls.
As technology has developed, phones have gained more functions, changing how we communicate. A 2023 report from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that people in China talked on their mobile phones for a total of 2.24 trillion (万亿) minutes. This is 22.8 percent less than a decade ago, reflecting a shift from talking to texting.
“Compared with text communication, talking on the phone doesn’t give people enough time to think and breathe,” Liu Shuangqing, a cognitive psychologist (认知心理学家) at China University of Political Science and Law, told Beijing Youth Daily. ‘This immediate forced participation can make people feel stressed. The initiative (主动权) to participate is also taken away by the caller, making the person answering the phone feel passive.”
“I can’t see the facial expressions and body language, only tones and words, which make me overthink the caller’s real meaning,” an internet user from Guangdong pointed out another reason why she is afraid of answering phone calls.
Unlike texting, where people can show their feelings through memes (表情包), phone calls miss out on a lot of key information. Albert Mehrabian, a psychologist and communication researcher, found that 55 percent of meaning is communicated through body language, 38 percent through tone of voice and 7 percent through spoken words, revealing how crucial body language is in communication.
Moreover, answering the phone is like opening a blind box. It can ring at any time and can bring good news or bad news, which creates a sense of uncertainty.
8. How does the internet user from Shandong feel when the phone rings?
A. Excited. B. Nervous. C. Annoyed. D. Calm.
9. What does the statistic from the 2023 report mentioned in paragraph 5 indicate?
A. The growing popularity of mobile phones. B. Advances in the features of mobile phones.
C. A change in people’s communication habits. D. People’s dependence on phones for communication.
10. According to Liu Shuangqing, why can talking on the phone be stressful?
A. It leaves little room for people to think and breathe.
B. It makes it easy to miss out key information.
C. It leads to confusion and misunderstandings.
D. It distracts people from their work.
11. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Phone calls are preferred for serious conversations.
B. People favor more controlled forms of communication.
C. Texting is considered more polite than making phone calls.
D. Young people dislike face-to-face communication.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. B

The artificial intelligence (AI) industry is projected to reach a value of $407 billion (about 2.89 trillion yuan) by 2027. However, its rapid development raises ethical concerns, particularly regarding the treatment of data labels. Without these workers, products like ChatGPT wouldn’t exist.
Data labelers play a key role in helping AI systems “learn”. As the name suggests, data labeling involves assigning labels: to raw data—such as images, videos or text—so that AI systems can recognize patterns and make predictions. For example, autonomous vehicles depend on labeled videos to differentiate between pedestrians (行人) and road signs, while large language models like ChatGPT require labeled text to interpret human language.
Despite their essential role, labelers are often exploited. AI models can cost . tens of millions of dollars to develop, so tech giants like Google and Microsoft outsource (外包) much of the data labeling work to factories in developing countries where workers are paid unfairly low wages. For instance, data labels in. Venezuela typically earn between $0.90 to $2 per hour whereas their counterparts in the US earn $10 to $25 per hour. Some companies even employ children for this task.
The working conditions are also poor. Many data labels are crowded into dusty, unsafe rooms that pose health. risks. Moreover, they often lack basic social protections such. as healthcare.
Data labeling can also be mentally exhausting due to repetitive tasks, tight deadlines and strict quality controls. Workers are sometimes required to read and label hate speech or other abusive content which can harm their mental health. Additionally, labelers often have no access to performance data and are unable to defend themselves in the event of wage cuts or job losses.
These issues have become so serious that in May nearly 100 data labels and AI workers in Kenya published. an open letter to US President Joe Biden, declaring that “our working conditions amount to modern-day slavery”.
The urgent need for more ethical AI supply chains is clear. Companies must implement fair wage policies that reflect the value of labelers’ contributions. Governments should introduce regulations promoting fairness and transparency (透明) in performance evaluations and data processing. As AI users, we can all advocate for ethical practices by supporting companies that are transparent about their supply chains and treat their workers fairly.
12. What do data labelers do in the AI industry?
A. They design AI systems for tech companies.
B. They program AI models for language tasks.
C. They create datasets to train AI models.
D. They track AI performance and outputs.
13. Why does the author mention Venezuela?
A. To criticize outsourcing practices in AI.
B. To illustrate the wage gap in data labeling.
C. To show differences in data labeling costs.
D. To compare AI development across countries.
14. What is one challenge data labelers face?
A. Limited access to proper training.
B. Confusing deadlines and difficult tasks.
C. Little protection from job losses.
D. Unpredictable working hours and schedules.
15. What is a suggested way to improve data labelers’ working conditions?
A. Enforcing fair labor laws worldwide.
B. Offering training on ethical AI practices.
C. Reducing reliance on outsourcing.
D. Supporting companies with fair practices.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

You’ve likely heard that extroverts (性格外向者) gain energy from being around others, while introverts recharge by being alone. ___16___? The truth is, we all exist on a spectrum (范围) between introversion and extroversion — no one is completely one or the other.
Extroversion, one of the “Big Five” personality traits, has a genetic basis, but people can show both extroverted and introverted behaviors depending on the situation. Studies show that even extroverts can feel exhausted after socializing. ___17___; It’s just that the upper limit will vary from person to person.
___18___. Long, difficult, or intense conversations tend to be more tiring. If you’re trying hard to make a good impression or meeting lots of new people, you’re more likely to feel worn out afterward. ___19___. So, you can try reducing the exhaustion from socializing by seeking interactions that make you feel comfortable, avoiding too many new people at once, or taking breaks during long conversations. Additionally, if you spend a lot of time hiding your true feelings during social events, you might be more likely to experience emotional exhaustion or burnout. For example, “service with a smile” jobs could make servers more tired. Similarly, caregivers who can’t express their grief or fear may feel emotionally spent outside of work. ___20___. This can help lessen inner struggles and conflicts.
A. Conflict and complaints also take more energy
B. Everyone will feel tired after a lot of socializing
C. But does that mean extroverts never get tired of socializing
D. However, introverts may never reach this point of exhaustion
E. Is this why extroverts are always more successful in social situations
F. To manage this, it’s vital to make time to share your emotions and accept them as real
G Research has found that certain social interactions are more exhausting than others
【答案】16. C 17. B 18. G 19. A 20. F

【导语】本文一篇说明文。文章介绍了每个人都存在于内向和外向之间,都会因社交而疲惫,某些社交互动比其他社交互动更让人筋疲力尽。
【16题详解】
前文“You’ve likely heard that extroverts (性格外向者) gain energy from being around others, while introverts recharge by being alone. (你可能听说过,外向的人从周围的人那里获得能量,而内向的人通过独处来充电)”提到外向的人和内向的人获取能量的方式不同;后文“The truth is, we all exist on a spectrum (范围) between introversion and extroversion — no one is completely one or the other. (事实是,我们都存在于内向和外向之间——没有人是完全的两者之一)”提到内向和外向是一个相对的概念;因此C项“But does that mean extroverts never get tired of socializing (但这是否意味着外向的人永远不会厌倦社交呢)”符合语境,以问题的形式引出外向的人可能也会厌倦社交,和前文构成转折,引出后文。故选C。
【17题详解】
前文“Studies show that even extroverts can feel exhausted after socializing. (研究表明,即使是外向的人在社交后也会感到疲惫)”提到外向的人也会因社交而疲惫;后文“It’s just that the upper limit will vary from person to person. (只是上限因人而异)”总结每个人疲惫的程度不同;因此B项“Everyone will feel tired after a lot of socializing (参加了大量的社交活动后,每个人都会感到疲惫)”符合语境,提到每个人都会因社交而疲惫,起到过渡的作用。故选B。
【18题详解】
后文“Long, difficult, or intense conversations tend to be more tiring. (长时间的、困难的或激烈的谈话往往会让人更累)”提到哪种社交更累人;因此G项“Research has found that certain social interactions are more exhausting than others (研究发现,某些社交互动比其他社交互动更让人筋疲力尽)”符合语境,提到社交互动的累人程度有差异,引出后文。故选G。

The Angel Who Rang the Doorbell
As the Christmas holidays drew near, we anticipated the arrival of numerous gifts. When the doorbell rang, I expected a package containing online orders, but instead found a beautiful calico kitten at my doorstep, gazing up with intelligent eyes. How had she rung the bell? We had just moved into an old country house in Germany, filled with mysterious tunnels and rooms, and I suspected our new neighbors might be playing a trick.
Anyway, the little kitten quickly became part of our family. My husband dubbed (起绰号) her our little angel, and Angelica she became. She was a calm presence, fitting into our home as if she’d always been there. She was more like a puppy than a kitten, always by my side, and we enjoyed exploring the house’s secrets together.
One day, when my husband was at work, I decided to explore an underground stone vault, an old root cellar (地窖) I’d been eager to see, and I took Angelica as my companion as usual. Armed with a flashlight and my cellphone in my pocket, I descended a rickety ladder (摇晃的楼梯) into the darkness. I don’t remember what happened but I woke up with a splitting headache and pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My flashlight was shattered, as were my eyeglasses. My arm was throbbing. The only light I could see was a square of daylight that outlined the hatch (地窖门口) above. Squinting, I could also make out a fuzzy, round object that began squeaking at me. It turned out to be Angelica, who was looking down at me from above. Thank goodness, she hadn’t fallen into the cellar.
I was in a dilemma. There was no way I could pull myself out of this deep cellar, especially with a possibly broken arm. With the ladder in pieces, I could never get high enough to make it through the hatch. I suddenly remembered that I had brought my cell phone with me. Luckily, the phone was alright in my pocket. However, it wasn’t getting any signal down in this cellar. How could I get out of the cellar?
Angelica was my last hope.

【答案】范文
Angelica was my last hope. I whispered to her, “Angelica, you have to go find help. Run as fast as you can to the house and bark or make some noise to alert someone.” She seemed to understand, her eyes wide and focused. With a final, concerned look, she turned and dashed off into the darkness, disappearing from sight. I sat there, praying she would make it and that someone would hear her. Minutes felt like hours as I waited in the cold, damp cellar.
Soon, I heard her squawk and heavy footsteps approaching. My heart raced with hope. The footsteps grew louder, and soon I saw a beam of light cut through the darkness as the hatch was pried open. My neighbor’s face appeared, followed by strong hands that lifted me out of the cellar. He had been working in the garden when Angelica’s appearance drew his attention. She had led him straight to me, as if to say, “I did it!” I hugged Angelica tightly, tears of gratitude streaming down my face. She had truly been my angel, ringing the doorbell of hope in my time of need.

“Kung fu promotes better health and fitness improved coordination (协调性) and higher self-esteem (自尊).

Moreover answering the phone is like opening a blind box.
D It distracts people from their work.
11. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Phone calls are preferred for serious conversations.
B. People favor more controlled forms of communication.
C. Texting is considered more polite than making phone calls.
D. Young people dislike face-to-face communication.
D

G. Research has found that certain social interactions are more exhausting than others

Armed with a flashlight and my cellphone in my pocket, I descended a rickety ladder (摇晃楼梯) into the darkness.
