Unit 12 Life is full of the unexpected. Section A (3a-3c)教学设计
一、新课标主题分析
本单元“生活充满意外”的主题,契合新课标中对学生情感态度和价值观培养的要求,引导学生关注生活中的不确定性,培养学生应对意外的积极心态和应变能力,同时在语言学习中提升学生的综合素养,包括语言知识与技能、文化意识、思维品质和学习能力等方面,让学生在真实语境中感受语言的魅力和生活的多彩。
二、核心素养目标
语言能力:
学生能够流畅地朗读课文,理解并准确翻译文中关于意外事件的描述,如911事件和错过航班却避开新西兰地震的经历等,回答相关问题(3a),并能运用文中重点词汇和短语(如unexpected、stare、in disbelief、take off、burn、above、alive、till/until、arrive at、be about to、even though等)进行造句和简单的写作。
Step 1: Lead-in (5 minutes)
Play a short video montage of various unexpected events in daily life, such as a wedding surprise, a sports game upset, etc. Then ask students to share their feelings and thoughts about these unexpected moments. This will quickly engage students and lead them into the theme of the unit.
Show a picture of the World Trade Center before and after 911 and ask students if they know anything about this event. Briefly introduce the significance of this event to set the stage for the text reading.
Step 2: Pre-reading (5 minutes)
Present the title "Life Is Full of the Unexpected" and ask students to predict what kind of unexpected events the author might mention in the passage based on the title. Write their predictions on the blackboard.
Show some key words and phrases from the text (such as coffee place, alarm clock, earthquake) and ask students to guess how these words might be related to the unexpected events. This will activate students' prior knowledge and curiosity.
Step 3: While-reading (15 minutes)
First reading: Play the audio of the text (from the provided audio resources) and ask students to listen and follow along with the text. Then ask them to read the text silently and answer the question in 3a: "Which two events does the writer mention?" After that, have a quick class discussion to check the answers and ask a few students to briefly summarize the two events.
Second reading: Divide the students into pairs. One student reads the text aloud while the other student listens and underlines the sentences that answer the second question in 3a: "How did the writer end up missing both events?" Then they switch roles. After that, ask pairs to discuss their answers and share with the class.
Vocabulary and phrase learning: While reading, stop at important vocabulary and phrases. For example, when encountering "unexpected", ask students to give examples of unexpected events in their lives. For "stare in disbelief", act out the expression and ask students to guess its meaning. Then provide more examples and sentences to help students understand and remember. Have students make flashcards for these words and phrases, with the word on one side and the definition, example sentence, and a picture (if possible) on the other side.
Step 4: Post-reading (15 minutes)
Vocabulary exercise (3b): Turn the vocabulary exercise into a group activity. Each group is given a set of cards with the words from 3b (lost, west, below, dead, empty) and their antonyms. Students need to match the words with their antonyms and then use each pair of words to create a short story or dialogue. After a few minutes, ask each group to present their work and the rest of the class can give feedback and suggestions.
Retelling (3c): Instead of just asking students to retell to their partners, set up a "storytelling corner" in the classroom. Each pair can choose to go to the corner and retell the story to an "audience" (other pairs who are not retelling at the moment). The audience can ask questions and give comments. Encourage students to use the words and phrases in 3c and add their own details and emotions to make the story more vivid. After all pairs have had a chance to retell, have a class vote for the best storytellers and give them small rewards.
Creative writing: Ask students to imagine an unexpected event that happened to them and write a short paragraph about it. They can use the structure and language style of the text as a reference, but also try to be creative. For example, they can start with a surprising sentence to catch the reader's attention, or use a different narrative perspective. After writing, students can exchange their paragraphs with their partners and give each other feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and creativity.
Step 5: Discussion and Reflection (10 minutes)
Lead a class discussion on the topic: "How can unexpected events change our lives? And what can we learn from them?" Divide the class into small groups and ask them to discuss for a few minutes. Then each group selects a spokesperson to share their ideas with the class. Encourage students to share personal experiences and insights, and guide them to think about the positive and negative aspects of unexpected events and how to deal with them.
Show some pictures of people helping each other during disasters (such as volunteers in earthquake-stricken areas) and ask students to discuss the importance of kindness and support in unexpected situations. This will help students develop a positive attitude and sense of responsibility.
Step 6: Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summarize the key points of the lesson, including the main content of the text, the important vocabulary and phrases, and the skills practiced (such as reading, speaking, and writing). Emphasize the theme of the unit and the importance of being prepared for and learning from unexpected events.
Assign homework:
Review the vocabulary and phrases learned in class and make a vocabulary tree or a word web to show the connections between the words.
Finish the creative writing task and polish it. Then share it with their family members and ask for their feedback.
- Search for an article or a video about an unexpected event in another country and write a short summary or make a presentation for the next class. This will extend the learning beyond the classroom and encourage students to explore more about the world.
