五、教学过程
Step 1: Lead-in (3 minutes)
Show a short video clip about an unexpected event in daily life, such as a sudden rainstorm on a sunny day or a traffic accident. Then ask students to share their experiences of unexpected events in their lives. This will activate students' background knowledge and lead in the topic of the unit "Life is full of the unexpected".
Step 2: Pre-reading (5 minutes)
Present the title of the passage "Life Is Full of the Unexpected" and ask students to predict what the passage might be about based on the title. Guide them to think about possible unexpected events that could be mentioned in the passage.
Show some pictures related to the 911 event and New Zealand earthquake (without giving too much information) and ask students if they know anything about these events. This will arouse students' curiosity and prepare them for reading.
Step 3: While-reading (15 minutes)
First reading: Ask students to read the passage quickly to get the main idea and answer the question in 3a: "Which two events does the writer mention?" After that, check the answers with the whole class and ask a few students to briefly summarize the two events.
Second reading: Have students read the passage carefully again and answer the second question in 3a: "How did the writer end up missing both events?" Encourage students to underline the key sentences and phrases in the passage that help them answer the question. Then invite some students to share their answers and explanations.
Vocabulary and phrase learning: While reading, stop at some important vocabulary and phrases, such as unexpected, stare, in disbelief, take off, burn, above, alive, till/until, arrive at, be about to, even though. Explain their meanings and usages in context, and give examples to help students understand. Then ask students to read the sentences containing these words and phrases aloud to get familiar with them.
Step 4: Post-reading (12 minutes)
Vocabulary exercise (3b): Ask students to find words from the passage with opposite meanings to the given words (lost, west, below, dead, empty) and write a sentence with each word. After students finish, check the answers and ask some students to read their sentences aloud. This activity helps students consolidate the vocabulary and understand the usage of antonyms.
Retelling (3c): Divide the students into pairs. Ask them to choose one of the events in the passage and retell it to their partner using the words and phrases provided in 3c. Encourage students to use their own words as much as possible and pay attention to the coherence and fluency of their retelling. After a few minutes, invite some pairs to perform in front of the class and give feedback and comments.
Step 5: Discussion and Reflection (10 minutes)
Lead a class discussion: Ask students to think about what they can learn from the author's experiences in the passage. How should we deal with unexpected events in our lives? Encourage students to share their ideas and opinions. This discussion helps students develop critical thinking and positive attitudes towards life.
Then ask students to reflect on their own lives and think about an unexpected event that had a significant impact on them. They can write a short paragraph about it, including what happened, how they felt at that time, and what they learned from it. This writing activity helps students connect the text with their own experiences and further consolidate the language knowledge and thinking skills.
Step 6: Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this lesson, including the main content of the passage, the important vocabulary and phrases, and the reading and speaking skills practiced.
Assign homework:
Review the vocabulary and phrases learned in this class and make sentences with them.
Finish the writing task started in class and share it with their parents or friends.
Search for another story about an unexpected event and bring it to class next time to share with the classmates.
