Workers at an Indian company are busy cutting up pieces of metal and using them to make unusual devices (设备). Company officials say these devices will catch smoke from diesel generators (柴油发电机) and turn it into ink.
New Delhi’s air pollution is among the worst in the world But one big reason is the city’s diesel generators. Industries and buildings use the huge machines to light up homes and offices during power failures. These failures often take place in the summer months.
Arpit Dhupar is one of three engineers who set up the company “Chakr Innovation”. He decided to find a way to fight air pollution three years ago. At the time, he saw a wall blackened by the smoke coming from a diesel generator. This sight led to the creation of “Chakr Innovation”. Dhupar had personally experienced the effect of the air pollution. He developed breathing problems while growing up in Delhi.
After over two years of research and development, “Chakr Innovation” has begun selling devices to catch pollution from diesel engines. Till today, the devices have been popular in 50 places, including private businesses.
After absorbing (吸入) the polluted air, the devices involves cooling the air in a “heat exchanger (热交换器)” where the dirty particles (颗粒) come together. These are then moved into another area where 70 to 90 percent of them can be caught. Then the carbon(C) is taken out from the particles and turned into ink in another part of the device.
One of the first businesses to work with Chakr was the law office of Jyoti Sagar. Sagar’s daughter has long suffered from the harmful effects of Delhi’s deadly air. He said the technology “is very useful, but is beautifully simple”. Tushar Mathur works at Chakr Innovation. He calls the technology “a win-win between businesses and the environment”.

Buddy or Friendship Benches (长椅) are needed because playgrounds can be lonely places sometimes. When a school places the bench, they teach a little lesson to the kids on how it is to be used. Then when a child sits on the bench, it sends out a message to others that basically says, “Hey, I’m alone right now and would welcome the company (陪伴) of others.” Kids in the playground see this and from their training, they see there is a fellow student in need. They are encouraged to come over and sit on the bench and make a new friend.
Benches like this have been around for a while now in many schools. But in Ireland, they are trying to do something different with them. This school in Cork in the south of Ireland is the 247th to get benches from a social organization called “Buddy Bench Ireland” that doesn’t just provide schools with benches, but also runs special projects with trained child psychiatrists (精神病专家). They use the bench as an opportunity to start conversations about mental health. They talk about the importance of knowing and understanding your feelings and those of others.
Judith Ashton, a co-founder of Buddy Bench Ireland said, “The children need to understand what the bench is about, what it represents — friendship, understanding, listening to each other and the most important thing is that it’s important to express feelings.”
But do children really use the bench? It’s a matter of great public concern. Sinead Mcgilloway from Maynooth University carried out a study and said, “We found that 40% of the children told us that they had actually used the benches at the time of the study. And over 90% said that they would talk to a child if that child was sitting on the bench. So, there’s nothing to worry about. ”
Children’s mental health and safety at school is increasingly a concern in many countries. In Ireland, they’re hoping these benches will not only deal with problems like school violence and school bullying (校园暴力和校园欺凌), but also give students the confidence to open up about their feelings.
7. According to the passage, buddy benches might ____.
A. make students feel relaxed
B. help students feeling lonely to find friends
C. be a symbol of psychology classes
D. appear in schools filled with problem children
8. The organization “Buddy Bench Ireland” ____.
A. makes buddy benches more popular
B. brings more new-pattern benches to schools
C. encourages more students to choose buddy benches
D. provides psychological care projects along with benches
9. In Judith Ashton’s opinion, what students most need to know is ____.
A. how to understand each other
B. what buddy benches are about
C. the importance of expressing themselves
D. the necessity of listening to their friends
10. From what Sinead Mcgilloway said, we can know that ____.
A. 60% of the children in the study disliked these benches
B. over 90% of the children in the study once felt lonely
C. he once worried about children with mental problems
D. the public don’t have to worry about the use of buddy benches

Winslow Homer was a famous American painter. Since Art History class in college, I had always admired (钦佩) his works and I was lucky to see a large exhibition of his works when I was in my early 30s. It was at this event that I bought a print of his painting Snap the Whip. When I got it, I was so happy that I put it on the wall of my classroom immediately. So, it always hung (挂) in my classroom until I retired from teaching.
I thought it truly caught the freedom and fun of childhood. In the painting, a group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on the grass ground in front of a farm house. They are jumping and laughing wildly with great joy. One of the boys is falling down to the ground. They are not even wearing shoes! I liked the freedom and the fun appearing in the painting and I tried to let my children have this kind of freedom and fun in my class.
During my last year of teaching, there was a young woman in her first year of teaching right next door to me and we got to be good friends. She had been an art student before taking up education. I still remembered the first time that she saw the painting on my wall. Her eyes were full of joy at this print when she entered my room. She was excited at the painting. We talked about it for a long time. We shared a lot in common about the theme of the painting. So on my last day of teaching, after the students had left, I took the painting off the wall and walked to the next door and gave it to her.
Para. 1:She was really surprised, but very glad to have it.

Para. 2: I finally shared my feelings about this painting with her.

【答案】Dear Editor,
I am very glad to contribute to your magazine.
Computer games are popular with students. However, some side effects arise along with them. Many students can’t control themselves and become addicted to computer games. They spend most of their time playing computer games instead of studying, which causes their grades to drop sharply.
Personally, I think some effective measures should be taken to solve this problem. To begin with, computer game designers should pay attention to combining computer games with education. And then, parents should teach their children to surf the Internet in a correct way. Finally, students should develop their self-control to deal with the relationship between studying and playing well.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

Winslow Homer was a famous American painter. Since Art History class in college, I had always admired (钦佩) his works and I was lucky to see a large exhibition of his works when I was in my early 30s. It was at this event that I bought a print of his painting Snap the Whip. When I got it, I was so happy that I put it on the wall of my classroom immediately. So, it always hung (挂) in my classroom until I retired from teaching.
I thought it truly caught the freedom and fun of childhood. In the painting a group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on the grass ground in front of a farm house.

【答案】范文
She was really surprised, but very glad to have it. She said, “I like it very much. I understand what you want me to do and I will treasure it and try my best to let children enjoy their wonderful childhood.” I was happy that she liked it and all the students she would have would treasure it as much as I had. We found a perfect place for it on one of her walls and hung it together. I thought I had found a good place for the painting.
I finally shared my feelings about this painting with her. Pointing at the painting on her wall, I said, “This painting has brought me a lot, which made me have a deep thought about teaching. I think it also will remind you of what real education is.” Then she walked me out to the playground, where the children were playing happily. I wished that children could enjoy the freedom and fun of their childhood.
