B In southern Utah’s rough land, Rebecca Fielding sat on the spot where her brother, Jonathan, had lost his life at the age of 19. Jonathan, a passionate photographer and nature explorer from Blue Springs, Missouri, bad moved to Orem, Utah, six months before his untimely death. On January 27, while capturing the beauty of Moonscape Overlook, a cliff (悬崖) broke beneath him, and he fell more than 200 feet. Consumed by sorrow, Rebecca drove 15 hours from Missouri to Utah, seeking comfort at the place where her best friend and constant source of unconditional love had been taken from her. In her darkest moment, she left a journal at the site with a heartfelt note about Jonathan, describing him as “a soul too pure for this world, a kid too fearless for his own good, and a friend whose kindness knew no bounds.” The journal's journey began when Sherrie Joyce Miller, a hiker who recognized Jonathan’s Dame from the news, found it near Utah’s Highway 24. She left her own note and returned it to its original location. Rebecca, unaware of Sherrie’s actions, left a third journal in June, this time with a photo album, when she revisited the site. The first journal had been picked up by a traveler who thought it was a random notebook and left it near the highway, where strangers began adding their tributes (致敬) to Jonathan. A public group, “Jonathan Fielding’s Journal Journey”, was created to track the journal’s path and encourage more entries. Rebecca shared a video on June 14, featuring the journal’s messages set to Jonathan’s favorite band, Lord Huron. The video included touching messages from strangers, emphasizing that as long as people remember Jonathan, his spirit will live on. This initiative has turned Rebecca’s sorrow into a powerful tribute, allowing Jonathan’s story to be carried forward by the love and kindness of strangers, giving Rebecca a sense of connection and purpose during her deep loss. 4. What was the main reason for Rebecca’s visit to Utah? A. To write a journal in her brother’s name. B. To film the beauty of Moonscape Overlook. C. To get some relief from sorrow of her brother’s death. D. To attend her brother’s photography exhibition. 5. What was the role of the public group “Jonathan Fielding’s Journal Journey”? A. To help add more to the journal. B. To publish the journal as a book. C. To organize a fundraising event. D. To keep the journal in case it is lost. 6. What impact did Rebecca’s video have on strangers? A. They left messages in the journal. B. They knew more about the band. C. They had a feeling of belonging. D. They learned to use their initiative. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The last adventure of Jonathan Fielding. B. A journal’s journey with love and kindness. C. An accident on the cliff edge. D. The death of a passionate explorer. C In many regions of the world, windows can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, windows brighten a room, and give occupants a view of the world beyond, and on the other band, they also let in a huge amount of heat from the sun. In fact, 87 percent of heat gain in a given space comes through its windows. This is because UV radiation (紫外辐射) passes through glass easily. To keep out the heat, people use window coverings like blinds, but that also blocks the view. A recent study from the University of Notre Dame indicates that soon people who love a view-but hate the heat-will be able to have it both ways. Though not yet scaled up (扩大生产) to market, the study presents a new window coating that could let in sunlight and keep out the heat. Window films and heat-blocking coatings are not a new concept. In fact, the authors of the study themselves pioneered an innovative glass coating in 2020. So what is so exciting about their new 2024 coating? It’s all about the angles. Tengfei Luo, lead author of the study told Notre Dame News, “The angle between the sunshine and your window is always changing. Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency whatever the sun's position in the sky.” In order to figure out the way to create a better window coating, the researchers used a quantum (量子) computing assisted AI machine-learning model, which helped to find out the correct combination of elements they would need to create an effective coating. Using the information, the researchers designed a coating that could selectively transmit and reflect light over a wide range of angles. That is to say, it can keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle that the sunlight is hitting the window. There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to residential use, and even for use in the automotive industry. 8. Why are windows referred to as a two-sided coin? A. They are useful but costly. B. They let in light as well as heat. C. They block sunlight and vision. D. They save energy but reduce visibility. 9. What is special about the 2024 coating? A. Its use of quantum computing technology. B. Its ability to selectively conduct heat. C Its environment-friendly elements. D. Its angle-insensitive functionality. 10. What can we learn about the new coating from the text? A. It can keep a room cool at any time. B. It requires people to adjust to the sun’s position. C. It works effectively during specific hours of the day. D. It can be created without the help of AL. 11. What will the text possibly talk about in the following paragraphs? A. The coating’s other potential applications. B. The underlying logic of the coating’s function. C. The history and development of window coatings. D. Further study to seek new materials for the coating. D At first glance, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about waxworms (蜡虫). These pale worms feed on the wax that bees use to make their honeycomb. For, beekeepers, they are something to swiftly get rid of without a second thought. But in 2017 molecular biologist Federica Bertoechini, who, at the time, was researching the embryonic development of vertebrates (脊椎动物) at the Spanish National Research Council, stumbled on a potentially game-changing discovery about these creatures. Bertocchini a beekeeper, threw some of the waxworms in a plastic bag after cleaning, her hive and left them alone. A short time later, she noticed the worms had started producing small holes in the plastic, which began degrading as soon as it touched the worms’ mouths. “It was a real brilliant moment, “Bertocchini says about the initial discovery and the realization of what it meant. The worms were doing something that we as humans find remarkably difficult to do: break down plastic. Not only that, but the worms appeared to be digesting the plastic as food. Bertocchini and her fellow researchers began collecting the liquid flowing from the worms’ mouths. They found this “saliva” contained two critical enzymes (酶), Ceres and Demeter-named after the Roman and Greek goddesses of agriculture, respectively-which are able to oxidize (氧化) the polyethylene in the plastic, essentially breaking down that material on contact. However, letting these worms loose in a plastic-polluted environment could be dangerous to ecosystems, especially given their ability to destroy bees’ hives, as Bertocchini notes. But she’s hopeful that the enzymes these worms produce could help tackle the world’s plastic pollution crisis. She is now a chief technology officer at bioresearch startup Plasticentropy France, working with a team to study the possibility of scaling up these enzymes for widespread use in degrading plastic. If enzymes like these can eventually be mass-produced to break down plastic, there could perhaps also be a role to play by the tiny beings. 12. What do beekeepers consider waxworms to be? A. Valuable creatures. B. Unexpected by-products. C. Potential threats. D. Something to do away with. 13. What does the underlined part “stumbled on” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Avoided intentionally. B. Ran into accidentally. C. Searched for purposefully. D. Passed by carelessly. 14. What plays a key role in decomposing plastic? A. Holes in the plastic. B. Two crucial enzymes. C. Worms’ digesting systems. D. Worms’ mouth liquids. 15. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Enzymes could be mass-produced. B. Waxworms will do good to the ecosystem. C. Biologist Bertocchini will go on with another research. D. Enzymes from waxworms may be used to handle plastic pollution. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In Manchester, you’ll be hardly pressed to spot anybody in the city center not wearing a pair of headphones. ___16___ But increasingly I’ve begun to question exactly why. Michael Bull, professor of sound studies at the University of Sussex believes our reliance on headphones can be explained by human’s motivation: a need for control. ___17___ While headphone users often describe themselves as being freer, he says, “They are dependent on the machine for that to be true; they’re locked into the world and the medium they’re using. ___18___ You’re being manipulated(操控), but the manipulation creates a sense of freedom.” When we block out the noises of the city which we consider negative, we also block out the noise of the natural world. As for me, I always hear the birds singing on the way to my gym. ___19___ And there is something quite lovely about hearing the city clearly. Using headphones, particularly to listen to music is a way to “beautify our experience” to make things seem more beautiful and pleasurable. But there is pleasure in the real world, too. ___20___ They can be a means for focus and productivity, and for those with sensory processing issues, they can prove invaluable. She grew up in a poor family, but they were rich in love and dreams. Despite their modest means, Liliana found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Liliana had a passion for sports, and she often imagined herself as a famous athlete, competing in grand stadiums. One day, while she was out riding a bike, she realized she had lost her favorite book, which was a precious gift from her late grandmother, and she was heartbroken. “Don’t worry. I’ll find it,” Liliana comforted herself, determined to recover the lost book. Going back over her steps, she searched every corner and crack of Belleville. Just as she was about to give up, she remembered a small spot by the river where she had stopped to rest. She rushed there and found the book lying in the grass, slightly damp but unharmed. “Thank goodness!” Liliana exclaimed, picking up the book. As she did, a small handmade bookmark fell out. It was a simple piece of paper with a drawing of the Eiffel Tower and the words “Dream Big” written in her grandmother’s handwriting. Years passed, and Liliana’s love for sports grew. She trained hard, using her bicycle to build her strength. Eventually, her efforts paid off, and she earned a scholarship to a sports academy in Paris. In Paris, Liliana faced many challenges. The city was vast and frightening, and the competition at the academy was fierce. One evening, after a particularly tough training session, she sat alone in her dorm room, holding the bookmark. “Grandma, give me strength,” she whispered, tears streaming down her face. 4. C. Its environment-friendly elements. 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. On the one hand, windows brighten a room, and give occupants a view of the world beyond, and on the other hand, they also let in a huge amount of heat from the sun.(在世界上许多地区,窗户可能是一件好坏参半的事情。一方面,窗户可以使房间明亮,让居住者看到外面的世界;另一方面,它们也会让太阳散发出大量的热量进入房间)”可知,窗户既可以让光线进入房间,也会让太阳散发出大量的热量进入房间,所以说窗户是一把双刃剑。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency whatever the sun’s position in the sky.(无论太阳在天空中的位置如何,我们的涂层都能保持功能和效率)”可知,2024年的涂层特别之处在于它的功能不受阳光角度的影响。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段“That is to say, it can keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle that the sunlight is hitting the window.(也就是说,它可以让房间在一天中的任何时间保持凉爽,无论阳光以什么角度照射到窗户上)”可推知,新涂层可以随时让房间保持凉爽。故选A。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to residential use, and even for use in the automotive industry.(这种新的窗户涂层有无数的实际应用,从商业用途到住宅用途,甚至用于汽车行业)”可推知,接下来的段落中,文章可能会讨论该涂层的其他潜在应用。故选A。 D At first glance, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about waxworms (蜡虫). Bertocchini, a beekeeper, threw some of the waxworms in a plastic bag after cleaning, her hive and left them alone. 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了分子生物学家Federica Bertocchini意外发现蜡虫能够分解塑料,并和其研究团队发现蜡虫唾液中的两种关键酶能够氧化塑料中的聚乙烯,他们希望这些蜡虫产生的酶能帮助解决世界塑料污染危机。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“At first glance, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about waxworms (蜡虫). These pale worms feed on the wax that bees use to make their honeycomb. For beekeepers, they are something to swiftly get rid of without a second thought.(乍一看,蜡虫并没有什么特别的地方。这些苍白的蠕虫以蜜蜂用来制造蜂窝的蜡为食。对养蜂人来说,它们是不用多想就能迅速摆脱的东西)”可知,养蜂人认为蜡虫是要除掉的东西。故选D项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线短语后第三段中“Bertocchini, a beekeeper, threw some of the waxworms in a plastic bag after cleaning her hive and left them alone. A short time later, she noticed the worms had started producing small holes in the plastic, which began degrading as soon as it touched the worms’ mouths.(养蜂人Bertocchini在清理完蜂巢后,把一些蜡虫扔进了一个塑料袋里,然后就没管它们。不久之后,她注意到这些虫子开始在塑料袋上产生小洞,塑料袋一碰到虫子的嘴就开始降解)”可知,Bertocchini是意外发现了蜡虫可以降解塑料。由此推知,“stumbled on a potentially game-changing discovery about these creatures”是指Bertocchini是意外发现了一个可能改变游戏规则的现象,划线短语的意思是“意外碰到”,与B项“Ran into accidentally.”同义。故选B项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“They found this ‘saliva’ contained two critical enzymes (酶), Ceres and Demeter-named after the Roman and Greek goddesses of agriculture, respectively-which are able to oxidize (氧化) the polyethylene in the plastic, essentially breaking down that material on contact.(他们发现,这种‘唾液’中含有两种关键的酶,分别以罗马和希腊农业女神的名字命名为Ceres和Demeter,这两种酶能够氧化塑料中的聚乙烯,基本上是一接触就能分解这种物质)”可知,在分解塑料中起关键作用的是两种关键的酶。故选B项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But she’s hopeful that the enzymes these worms produce could help tackle the world’s plastic pollution crisis.(但她希望这些虫子产生的酶能帮助解决世界塑料污染危机)”和“If enzymes like these can eventually be mass-produced to break down plastic, there could perhaps also be a role to play by the tiny beings.(如果这类酶最终能够大规模生产来分解塑料,那么这些微小的生物或许也能发挥作用)”可推知,蜡虫体内的酶可能被用来处理塑料污染。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In Manchester, you’ll be hardly pressed to spot anybody in the city center not wearing a pair of headphones. But something magical happened when I chose not to wear them. I began to feel calmer. My thoughts didn’t disappear, but they no longer held as much weight. They would pass by me like cars on the motorway. I learned to exist exactly as I was, and appreciate the world for exactly what it is. A. That’s a big contradiction. B. I think they are not aware of it at all. C. Despite this, I am not actively against headphones. D. In the meanwhile he also notes this control is two-sided. E. Birds’ singing could be contributing to a culture of concentration. F. They can be heard despite the traffic if you listen out for them. G. Actually, many choose to tune into anything but the outside world when we’re out. 【答案】16. G 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. With renewed determination, Liliana threw herself back into her training. She started winning competitions and gaining recognition. But just as things were looking up, she fell ill. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 But Liliana decided to stay and compete in the coming championship. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Liliana returned home to Belleville as a hero. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 But Liliana decided to stay and compete in the coming championship. The day eventually arrived and she felt a mix of tension and determination. As she stood at the starting line, she held the bookmark in her hand. The race was intense, but Liliana pushed herself to the limit. As she crossed the finish line, she realized she had won. Tears of joy and relief streamed down her face as she accepted the gold medal. She knew she had not only achieved her dreams but had also secured a better future for her family. Liliana returned home to Belleville as a hero. “Liliana, you did it! You made us all so proud,” her mother said, hugging her tightly. “We did it, together,” Liliana replied, smiling through her tears. Life in Belleville slowly returned to normal, but Liliana’s achievements had left a lasting impact. She decided to use her fame and resources to give back to the community. She started a sports academy in Belleville, providing training and opportunities for young athletes who, like her, had big dreams despite limited means. 词汇激活 行为类 ①实现:achieve/realize ②拥抱:hug/embrace ③决定做某事:decide to do/make up one’s mind to do 情绪类 ①紧张:tension/nervousness ②快乐:joy/delight 【点睛】[高分句型1] As she crossed the finish line, she realized she had won.(运用了as引导时间状语从句,省略了that的宾语从句) [高分句型2] She started a sports academy in Belleville, providing training and opportunities for young athletes who, like her, had big dreams despite limited means.(运用了现在分词作状语,who引导定语从句) 听力1~5 ACABC 6~10ABCBA 11~15 BCBCB 16~20ABAAC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
