Max loved playing with his friends. One day his mother sent him to his friend Emma’s house. He was so excited. When he arrived, he ran off with Emma to play with the toys.
After playing for a while, Emma went to bring some snacks, and while she was away, Max accidentally broke her favourite toy, a beautiful doll. Max became scared. He didn’t want to upset his friend nor did he want to get into trouble, so he quickly hid it under the bed where he was certain that no one would find it.
Emma returned with a basket full of snacks for them. They ate together, but Max was too nervous to enjoy. Suddenly, Emma realized that she could not see her doll anywhere. She was very upset and searched everywhere for her beloved toy. Max pretended he didn’t know what happened to the doll. He felt like it was on fire inside. But before he could say anything, his mother came to get him.
That night, Max felt terrible about keeping the secret and he couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking about the broken doll and Emma’s sad face. Finally, he decided to tell Emma the truth.
The next morning, he told his mother first and then they drove to Emma’s house. Nervous as Max was, he took a deep breath. What came out in a shaking voice was, “Emma, I have s—something to tell you. I’m so sorry, but I accidentally b—broke your doll.”
Max told Emma everything. She was hurt and then surprised, but also relieved to finally know what happened. They glued the doll back together. Although it wasn’t perfect like before, Emma was happy to have her toy back.

Just like our bodies produce waste every day, our brains also produce harmful waste proteins (蛋白质). The body can be washed regularly, but what about the brain?
A 2013 study might get the answer. Researchers at the University of Rochester in the US studied the brains of mice and discovered that they cleaned themselves while the mice were sleeping. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (脑脊液) in the brain was found to increase noticeably during sleep, washing away waste proteins that had been building up between brain cells during waking hours.
This study showed that the brain worked differently when asleep and when awake. This may also explain why we can’t seem to think clearly after a sleepless night, while a good night’s sleep leaves us feeling sharp and refreshed.
Another study, published on Oct 31, 2019 in Science, dug a little deeper into our brains’ self-cleaning process. This time, humans were tested instead of mice.
Researchers at Boston University in the US observed the brain waves of 13 healthy adults while they were sleeping. They found that every 20 seconds, blood flew out of the brain, making room for a large amount of CSF to come in and “clean”. This process was related to the change in the brain’s slow waves—an electrical activity that happens when we are in deep sleep.
Although they were still unsure about how these brain activities were connected, it was exciting enough to find that they were connected. It allowed scientists to piece together possible new explanations for misunderstood diseases. For example, slow-wave sleep has been proven to play a role in strengthening our memories. This may explain why people with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病), whose memories are disordered, often have fewer and weaker slow brainwaves. Based on the 2019 study about CSF, there could be one more explanation for Alzheimer’s: The diseased brains are not clean.
Maybe the most important take-home message of the findings is that sleep is a serious thing. We really need to sleep well to keep a healthy brain.
24. What did the 2013 study find?
A. Why the brain worked better when asleep. B. How the brain got self-cleaned when asleep.
C. How the brain produced waste when awake. D. Why the brain built up proteins when awake.
25. What can we learn about the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the passage?
A. The CSF—slow wave connection inspires new ideas for brain disorders.
B. Alzheimer’s can be cured with more CSF in the diseased brain.
C. The reasons why CSF is connected with slow waves are clear.
D. The CSF comes in our brain with blood when people sleep.
26. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Clear Your Mind to Improve Sleep B. Slow Your Brain for a Better Sleep
C. Shower Your Brain in a Sound Sleep D. Strengthen Your Memory in a Deep Sleep
D
Do you know the weight of 30,000 adult Asian elephants? It’s about 150,000 tons. That’s how much land—based plastic trash is produced by humans across the globe within a single hour, 10 times the amount a century ago, according to World Bank researchers.
Yet there are a growing number of young people, whose yearly trash output can be small enough to fit inside an eight—ounce mason jar. Actually, they’re leading a zero—waste lifestyle, a way of living that aims to reduce trash production to as close to zero as possible. They say it saves them money and time and enriches their lives. Kathryn Kellogg is one of them.
“We saved about $5,000 a year by shopping for fresh food instead of packaged food, buying wholesale, and making our own cleaners and shopping bags,” says Kellogg, who lives with her husband in a small house in Vallejo, California.
Kellogg shares the details of their efforts, along with practical tips and encouragement on her blog goingzerowaste. com, for others looking to a zero—waste lifestyle. “There’s a fear of being left out when you try to do things differently,” Kellogg says. “But it’s not a big change to clean up the dust with a cloth towel instead of a paper towel.”
“I think many people are ready to cut their waste,” says Kellogg. However, she doesn’t want them to fixate (痴迷于) on trying to put all their trash into a jar. “Zero—waste is really about trying to minimize (最小化) your trash and making better choices in your life,” she says. “Just do the best you can.”
Kellogg suggests many practices that were common before the times of plastics and disposable (一次性的) products. Think cloth napkins and handkerchiefs, vinegar (醋) and water for cleaning, glass meal boxes for left—overs, cloth shopping bags. These, and similar old—school solutions, produce no waste and are cheaper in the long run.
“Going zero—waste means questioning what’s normal and thinking outside the box,” Kellogg says. As one example, she mentions that she loves pancakes but hates making them. As a zero—waste blogger, she refused to buy packaged ones at food shops. Finally, she hit on the solution: buy a dozen of fresh—made ones from a local Mexican restaurant. The restaurant was even happy to put the pancakes in Kellogg’s reusable meal box because it saves them money.
Living a zero—waste lifestyle is a journey, it doesn’t happen overnight. But it’s worth the effort. Let’s move towards zero waste with small steps.
27. Why does the writer use the example of elephants in Paragraph 1?
A. To stress the importance of elephants. B. To introduce a way of recycling trash.
C. To show the large amount of plastic trash. D. To describe a result of waste management.
28. Which of the following would Kellogg most probably agree with?
A. To buy a chocolate gift box for friends. B. To clean up the dust with a paper towel.
C. To keep as much trash as possible in a jar. D. To store the left—overs in a glass lunch box.
29. What does the underlined word “practices” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. Ways of making common products B. Methods of minimizing daily waste.
C. Actions of buying supplies at lower cost. D. Processes of collecting old—school things.
30. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A To call for the actions of taking on a zero—waste lifestyle.
B. To compare some practical tips on a zero—waste lifestyle.
C. To discuss the benefits of adopting a zero—waste lifestyle.
D. To point out the popularity of living a zero—waste lifestyle.

五、阅读表达(第31—33题每题2分,第34题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing?
Recently, an ordinary yet “magical” pair of glasses—the AR Smart Glasses—has hit the market, which goes far beyond regular translation tools by offering hands—free, screen—free, real—time interactive translation.
The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like regular glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
The coolest feature (特色) of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously (同步地) Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to question whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.
So, even though AR Smart Glasses and other cool tools can help with translations, the real joy and benefits of knowing a language come from speaking it fluently and understanding its culture.
