Satow, now 56, left her home in Virginia two decades ago to start a new life in southern France. Born in a family of farmers with a passion for the kitchen, she had a background in catering (餐饮业) and her love of food fueled her ambition of one day moving to the French region, Provence.
Satow worked for several high-quality dining restaurants in the US, which inspired her passion for fine food, wine and cooking. She attended a cooking school in Colorado, where she completed a course in French techniques and joined a wine club.
As it happened, her British husband’s job took the couple across the Atlantic and in 2005, they settled near Provence, a picturesque town. Later Satow met her French partner, Christophe Daumas, with whose support and encouragement, she started looking for a specialized space where she could offer cooking classes.
La Cuisine Provençal, her cooking school, finally opened in 2021. She now has customers from all over the world, mostly travelers coming to Provence for the first time, but also locals. In the winter when there are fewer tourists, she offers classes for French people such as creating a holiday meal. The school offers collective group classes in English and French with a maximum of 50 participants, and organizes private dinners.
At the beginning, Satow admits, she was quite concerned as an outsider and could not imagine competing with French chefs. Since then, mainly on her own, she has read hundreds of recipes, learned lots of tips, discovered French regional dishes and tasted wine at domaines (葡萄园).
She likes to stick to teaching real local cuisine with a few changes. “It is important to show respect for the local Provencal cuisine which developed over hundreds of years and is still made by local people in their homes. I’ve taken those recipes and improved them with the novel cuisine and chef techniques I learned in the US, and I’ve added my own touches.” she says.
4. What do you know about Satow before her coming to Provence?
A. She had no working experience in catering. B. Her ambition was to run her own restaurant.
C. She completed her course in cooking in US. D. Her French partner gave her much encouragement.
5. What can we learn about La Cuisine Provençal?
A. Both tourists and natives can attend the school. B. Most of the learners come from overseas.
C. There are courses on cuisine around the earth. D. It offers classes for locals free of charge.
6. Which words can best describe Satow?
A. Generous and influential. B. Outgoing and friendly.
C. Hardworking and determined. D. Caring and confident.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Satow’s teaching strategies. B. Satow’s attitude to cuisine.
C. Satow’s passion for cooking. D. Satow’s life changes.

A French ski resort (度假区), Alpe du Grand Serre (AGS), is set to close permanently due to the decreasing snowfalls and a lack of funds to transform it into a year-round attraction. The decision was made by the local council (理事会), which voted to stop funding for the resort’s transformation plans. The resort, located in the Isère region, is one of several lower-lying ski destinations in Europe facing an existing danger, driven by humans burning fossil fuels.
Faced with decreasing snowfalls, the town had championed a plan, AGS 2050, which had aimed to replace ski lifts and improve the station for both summer and winter sports. But with unreliable winter snowfall, completing the project became too risky. Over 2.8 million euros have been invested since 2017, but the council president said the impact of committing two more years without a clear future was too great.
The closure of the resort will be devastating for the local economy, with nearly 200 jobs dependent on it. Marie Battistel, an officer of the region, warned that the closure sends a danger signal on a national scale. “The state is not giving us any specific support for the future of the resort or for a transitional operation,” said Saurat, who had warned that the resort was facing a 7 million euros hole in its budget.
AGS's closure is just one example of the growing number of ski resorts struggling to deal with declining snowfalls. Other resorts, such as Grand Puy and La Sambuy, have also closed permanently or take apart their ski lifts. Snow expert Carlo Carmagnola estimates that 40% of ski resorts in the French Alps now depend on man-made snow to stay open, with higher percentages in Italy and Austria.
8. What’s part of the reason for AGS’s closure?
A. Weak tourism. B. Climate change. C. Geographic location. D. Bad management.
9. What can be learned about the AGS 2050 plan?
A. The reason for its failure is a shortage of fund.
B. It would take three more years to complete the plan.
C. The council president is quite confident of its future.
D. It had intended to update the equipment and building.
10. What does the underlined word “devastating” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Hopeless. B. Disastrous. C. Uncontrollable. D. Disappointing.
11. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. The Closure of a Large Ski Resort B. The Future of the French Ski Resorts
C. The Failure of the AGS Plan 2050 D. The Influence of Snowfall on ski resorts
D
In a single in-breath, human sense of smell can recognize the difference between odors (气味) quickly. Its level of sensitivity is equal to color vision, according to a new study. This doesn’t agree with the widely held belief that olfaction (嗅觉) is slow.
The researchers, from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ohio State University, developed a device that included two main parts. One allows odors to flow in one direction and the other is capable of delivering odors to human nose with an accuracy of 18 milliseconds. The researchers asked 229 adults in China to wear this device and smell different odor mixtures. Two odors are presented one after another within a single in-breath.
They found that participants could identify different odor orders when the two odors were only 60 milliseconds apart, which challenged the timing of the previous research, around 1,200 milliseconds. They noted that they used only four odors and that it would be beneficial to test a wider variety to determine whether the human olfaction is more sensitive to certain odor or mixture.
“This study sheds important light on the puzzling system that support human odor recognition,” Dr. Robert Datta wrote, a professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. The study of human olfaction has historically fallen behind that of vision and hearing, because as humans, we think of ourselves as visual creatures that largely use speech to communicate. It helps fill a key gap in our understanding of how we as humans smell.
12. How did the researchers carry out their study?
A. By presenting examples. B. By analyzing the data.
C. By conducting an experiment. D. By interviewing participants.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Participants recognized odors in a shorter time than previously thought.
B. The result of the previous research was not as accurate as the new finding.
C. There was limitation on the range of the odors in the previous research.
D. More odors or mixture might be employed in the test of the further study.
14. What’s Dr. Rober Datta’s attitude toward the new finding?
A. Supportive B. Negative C. Objective D. Disappointed
15. What's the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To stress the significance of the new study. B. To show the future focus of the research team.
C. To predict the possibilities of the further study. D. To explain the reasons for the gap of the study.

How to Adjust Our Metabolism
Most of us have heard that a good metabolism (新陈代谢) is the golden ticket to weight loss. ____16____ Simply put, metabolism is the energy used by the physical processes that keep us alive. While our biggest risk of metabolic decline is aging, here are some of the best small changes in habit that can help us improve metabolism.
Watch the Sunrise
Simply being bathed in early morning sunshine can increase our metabolism naturally. Our master body clocks work best when in step with the sun, receiving bright light in the morning. ____17____
Safeguard Our Sleep
Sleep is the reset button for our metabolism. Prepare our brain for bedtime by dimming (变暗) the lights a few hours beforehand. ____18____ Also, if your sleep is constantly interrupted by light snoring (鼾声), use a breathing strip on your nose to help open the narrowed passage behind your nose.
____19____
Try this easy system: In the morning, put five rubber bands on our wrist. Every time we drink 16 ounces of water, take off a band and put it on the bottle. Researchers found that metabolic rate jumped by 30 percent for up to 40 minutes after 14 volunteers drank 16 ounces of water. It was estimated that over a year, increasing water consumption by two cups a day could burn an extra five pounds or so.
While there's obviously no solution to aging, we can learn to adjust our metabolism as our body changes over time. No one knows our body like we do, and listening to our body is crucial. ____20____
A. Increase Water Consumption
B. Set Up a Suitable Reminder System
C. Find what works for us - then stick to doing it.
D. Turn off bright overheads and turn on bedside lamps with warm light.
E. But that seriously undervalues metabolism's role in our bodies and health.
F. We'd better spend at least 15 minutes every morning outdoors in sunlight.
G. We burn up most of daily calories while at rest by sleeping and breathing.

Years ago, in a small village, there lived a poor but cheerful gardener. He was so content that he whistled (吹口哨) merry tunes throughout the day. The villagers loved to wander by his garden to enjoy the harmonious sounds.
Next to the gardener lived a wealthy merchant (商人). He often stayed up late, carefully counting his jewels (珠宝). By sunrise, he retired to bed, yet the gardener's whistling kept him awake. One day, the merchant thought of a plan to silence the tunes. He penned a note, inviting the gardener over for a refreshing drink.
The gardener arrived on time, and to his astonishment, the merchant presented him with a box filled with jewels as a symbol of admiration. The gardener accepted the box, thankfulness shining in his eyes. Upon returning home, he eagerly opened the box. He had never laid eyes on such a large number of jewels! He sat on his porch and began, carefully, to count them. The villagers looked searchingly through the fence.
The jewels were so numerous that the gardener feared leaving them unattended. So he placed them beside his bed, but his anxiety kept him awake. He rose and decided to hide them in the basement, yet he doubted its safety.
At the break of dawn, he got the jewels back from the basement and resolved to hide them beneath the old oak tree. However, after lunch, he reconsidered and believed the tool storeroom would be safer. Thus, he shifted them there. But his unease remained, and shortly after, he dug a hole beneath the rose tree and buried his treasure.
Paragraph 1:
His whistling stopped, and he struggled to concentrate on his gardening.

B 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第二段“Faced with decreasing snowfalls, the town had championed a plan, AGS 2050, which had aimed to replace ski lifts and improve the station for both summer and winter sports.(面对降雪量减少的情况,该镇提出了一项名为AGS 2050的计划,旨在更换滑雪缆车,并改善车站的夏季和冬季运动设施)”可知,AGS 2050计划打算更新设备和建筑。
根据划线词下文“with nearly 200 jobs dependent on it(因为近200个工作岗位依赖于它)”和“Marie Battistel, an officer of the region, warned that the closure sends a danger signal on a national scale.(该地区的一名官员玛丽·巴蒂斯特尔 (Marie Battistel) 警告称,该度假区的关闭在全国范围内发出了一个危险信号)”可知,度假村的关闭将对当地经济造成灾难性的影响。

C 13. D 14. A 15. A
根据第二段“The researchers, from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ohio State University, developed a device that included two main parts...The researchers asked 229 adults in China to wear this device and smell different odor mixtures.(来自中国科学院大学和俄亥俄州立大学的研究人员开发了一种装置,该装置包括两个主要部分……研究人员让中国229名成年人佩戴这种装置,闻不同的气味混合物。)”可知,研究人员是通过试验来进行研究的。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“They noted that they used only four odors and that it would be beneficial to test a wider variety to determine whether the human olfaction is more sensitive to certain odor or mixture.(他们指出,他们只使用了四种气味,而测试更多种类的气味将是有益的,以确定人类的嗅觉是否对某些气味或混合物更敏感。)”
根据最后一段“‘This study sheds important light on the puzzling system that support human odor recognition,’ Dr. Robert Datta wrote, a professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School.(哈佛医学院神经生物学系教授罗伯特•达塔博士写道:“这项研究为支持人类气味识别的令人困惑的系统提供了重要的启示”。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“The study of human olfaction has historically fallen behind that of vision and hearing, because as humans, we think of ourselves as visual creatures that largely use speech to communicate. It helps fill a key gap in our understanding of how we as humans smell.(历史上,对人类嗅觉的研究一直落后于对视觉和听觉的研究,因为作为人类,我们认为自己是视觉生物,主要通过语言进行交流。它有助于填补我们在理解人类嗅觉方面的一个关键空白。)”可知,作者写最后一段的目的是强调新研究的重要性。故选A。

上文提到“Most of us have heard that a good metabolism (新陈代谢) is the golden ticket to weight loss. (我们大多数人都听说过,良好的新陈代谢是减肥的黄金门票。)”说明新陈代谢有利于减重,后文提到新陈代谢是我们身体维持生命活动所需的能量消耗过程,所以前文的内容是低估了它的作用,故E项“但这严重低估了新陈代谢在我们身体和健康中的作用。”符合文意。故选E项。
【17题详解】
本段的标题是“Watch the Sunrise (观察日出)”和上文“Simply being bathed in early morning sunshine can increase our metabolism naturally. Our master body clocks work best when in step with the sun, receiving bright light in the morning.
横线位于段首,功能是总结本段大意,根据本段最后一句“It was estimated that over a year, increasing water consumption by two cups a day could burn an extra five pounds or so. (据估计,在一年的时间里,每天增加两杯水的摄入量可以多消耗大约五磅的体重。)”可知,这一段中作者建议通过增加水的摄入量来提高新陈代谢,故A项“增加水的摄入量”符合文意。故选A项。
横线位于段尾,需要总结本段大意,根据空前“While there's obviously no solution to aging, we can learn to adjust our metabolism as our body changes over time. No one knows our body like we do, and listening to our body is crucial.

此处是固定句型“It is+形容词+for sb. to do sth.”,表示“对某人来说做某事是……的”,it为形式主语,动词不定式是真正的主语,所以此处使用动词不定式to explore。故填to explore。
故填since。
The Dream of the Red Chamber之间是被动关系,所以使用过去分词written,位于句首,首字母需大写。
The Dream of the Red Chamber,指物,在从句中作主语,所以使用关系代词which引导。故填which。

Years ago in a small village, there lived a poor but cheerful gardener.

Paragraph 1
His whistling stopped, and he struggled to concentrate on his gardening. His mind was full of the safety of his jewels. While tending to the plants in his garden, he couldn’t help checking on the jewels repeatedly. And he kept shifting the box from one spot to another for added safety. Moreover, he spent nights tossing and turning because he was always attempting to counting the jewels in his mind. Worst of all, the villagers no longer stopped by for his tunes.
Paragraph 2:
Eventually, the gardener was so unhappy that he took the box of jewels to the merchant’s doorstep. As soon as the merchant opened the door, the gardener threw the box at him. “Please take back your jewels,” he said. “The burden of them has left me anxious day and night. I prefer being the poor gardener as I once was.” Before the merchant could respond, the gardener had disappeared. From that day on, the gardener’s joy returned, and he whistled cheerfully while working. It is not material possessions but true fulfillment and inner peace that really matter.
