Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award—China’s top award for theater and opera performances—started to learn the traditional art form in 1977. Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed frequently, and was recruited by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe (剧团) when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe’s invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies and not drop out of school. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly and showed great sincerity, Wang’s parents finally agreed. Learning the traditional art form was never easy. She started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing martial artists roles at first, she had to spend extra time practicing kungqu movements. Years later, Wang used the word “unimaginable” to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains (冻疮) on her hands when training in shabby classrooms with broken windows. “But I was young and determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,” Wang recalls. Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,” Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was overwhelmed (难以禁受) by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it has stayed with me since. ” Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations of audiences and helped to promote the art form among young people. 4. Why did Wang fail to receive the troupe’s invitation at first? A. Her parents regarded the members of troupe as insincere. B. Her parents didn’t want her to ignore her studies. C. She saw no future in learning Kunqu Opera. D. She didn’t have artistic talent. 5. What is the main idea of the third paragraph? A. Artists deserve more attention and care. B. Traditional culture needs further promotion. C. Wang has devoted herself to learn Kunqu well. D. Wang has made a great contribution to the development of Kunqu. 6. What made Wang change her attitude towards Kunqu Opera? A. Joining her ideal troupe. B. Winning the Plum Performance Award. C. Being greatly admired by the audience. D. Being touched by Zhang’s masterly performance. 7. What can we learn from Wang’s story? A. Doing is better than saying. B. Don’t judge a book by its cover. C. It is never too late to learn. D. Rome was not built in a day. C Imagine you need milk, so you go to the grocery store to pick some up, only to find there are dozens of options. These days, you have to make a decision on not only the percentage of fat you want, but also what source you want your milk to be coming from: cows, soybeans... You have no idea what milk to pick. There are so many choices that you are confused. This phenomenon is known as the paradox (悖论) of choice and it is becoming a concern in the modern world, where more and more options are becoming easily available to us. While we might believe that being presented with multiple options actually makes it easier to choose one that we are happy with, and thus increases consumer satisfaction, having too many options actually requires more effort to make a decision and can leave us feeling unsatisfied with our choice. The idea was popularized by American psychologist Barry Schwartz when he published his book, The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. Schwartz, who has long studied the ways in which economics and psychology intersect (交叉), became interested in seeing the way that choices were affecting the happiness of citizens in Western societies. He identified that the range of choices that we have available to us these days is far greater than that people had in the past; however, consumer satisfaction has not increased as much as traditional economics theories might expect. Schwartz identified that the paradox of choice carries the most consequence for people that are maximizers. Maximizers, unlike satisficers, are concerned with making the best choice instead of simply making a choice that they are happy with. When there are many options available to maximizers, it becomes harder for them to determine which is the best, which can cause them to feel a great deal of regret after they have made a choice. Instead of believing that freedom of choice is unlimited, Schwartz advocates that the role of psychology and behavioral economics should be to find the kind of limitations on freedom that can lead to the greatest level of happiness within society. 8. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning buying milk in paragraph 1? A. To lead in the topic. B. To draw a conclusion. C. To show that we have more choices when shopping. D. To indicate that people pay greater attention to health when shopping. 9. What does the paradox of choice suggest? A. More options mean less satisfaction. B. Consumer satisfaction has greatly increased. C. People are happy with more choices. D. Modern people are happier than their ancestors. 10. What can be learned about satisficers? A. They aim for the very best. B. They tend to follow their feelings. C. They often regret their decisions. D. They have trouble making a decision. 11. What does Schwartz suggest people do? A. Hold on to their beliefs. B. Accept their own behavior. C. Give up freedom. D. Limit their own choices. D Artificial intelligence becoming self-aware and exterminating (消灭) the human race is a common theme in science fiction. But the levels of high intelligence that AI could reach is a real concern among some scientists. But with more talk of AI and smart devices in the home, what are the positives of bringing these things into your life? Hans Rosling, a professor of international health, once spoke about the impact and changes that the washing machine made. The once tough task of cleaning clothes by hand was taken on by a machine and freed up more time for other activities. There are so many smart devices that you can fill your home with. Imagine waking up to find a piping hot, freshly brewed cup of coffee, spotless floors that have been recently cleaned and the house set to the perfect temperature. With smart devices, these things can happen while you sleep. The potential to pre-program and automate parts of your life means that you can focus on other tasks in your life. But there is a difference between smart devices and AI. Smart devices are the things that get on with the tasks, while AI can ‘think’ or interact, and can be used to control the smart devices. There are many voice-activated AI systems which can control the smart devices around your home. You can ask these devices to start making coffee, dim the lights when they’ re too bright or even make sure the house is secure. You can inquire as to the weather outside, ask them to play music or search the internet for you when you have a burning question about history or the latest cooking recipes. Some of these devices even have a sense of humour, and upon asking them certain questions, they will retort (反驳). In short, in some ways, they can act as company. But how far will it go? Well, we already have self- driving cars and sentient tech that can automatically order the delivery of certain products to restock our fridge when we’ re running low, but often in films and games we see humanoid robots taking over all of the domestic duties. It seems for now, that those things only live in our imaginations, but we could be seeing them sooner than we think. 12. What concerns some scientists about AI? A. It will reach high levels. B. It will retort when asked. C. It will take over the earth. D. It will live in imaginations. 13. What is the difference between smart devices and AI? A. AI systems get on with tasks. B. Smart devices can control AI system. C. Smart devices can be controlled by voice. D. AI implies a level of thinking or interaction. 14. What’s the writer’s attitude to the future of AI? A. Objective. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent. 15. What can be the best title for the passage? A. The Future of AI and Smart Devices B. The Wonders of Smart Devices and AI C. AI and Smart Devices: Changing Our Lives D. Benefits of AI and Smart Devices in Daily Life 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Have you ever embarrassed yourself in public and got laughed at? Our neighborhood usually went all out for trick-or-treating. In the evening, there had been streams of kids coming into houses in their fancy costumes. We’d got a few bowls of candies out for the kids, and it was an amazing night. Later that evening, I saw a mother and her six-year-old son, Alan, come into my house. The mother, called Mary, was a cleaner in our neighborhood. She cleaned the street earnestly and while her English was simple, she was always polite and attempted to have pleasant conversations with neighbors. It was said that she’d come from Asia and her husband had passed away. So many times, when I passed by their small house, I saw Alan writing under the street lamp. I joked with him. “Hi, Alan, studying so hard! Do you want to enter Harvard?” He nodded with a smile and waved me goodbye. Alan was wearing what could be described as a white garbage bag with a head hole cut into it. It looked like the mother had applied some of her lipstick (口红) to his face to make it seem as if he was bleeding from his mouth and eyes-scarily effective! I realized the mother had very little income but still wanted to ensure her little son a good evening. The boy asked me, “Keith, can I frighten you?” I replied, “Oh! Wow! What a scary...” The boy continued, “Mama couldn’t finish work early, but I still got some candies! Look!” He showed me a container with a few candies in it. I looked at my watch-it was 9:00 p.m, and most of the trick-or-treating took place between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. I passed the candy bowl to him, and he politely took the smallest candy. He said to me with a big smile, “Thank you very much!” The boy’s behavior moved me so much that I put all other candies into his container. His mother noticed what I’d done and said in broken English, “I’ve told him not to be greedy.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右: 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Hearing what his mother said, the boy was about to give the candies back. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Watching Alan’s little figure gradually fading into the night, I felt I should do something for him. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 郴州市一中南高二年级12月份质量检测试题卷 学科:英语 总分:150 考试时长:120分钟 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项,并标在试卷的相应位置。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 例:How much is the shirt? However, I stopped him immediately and gently said, “Alan, you can keep them. They then waved goodbye to me. Paragraph 2: Watching Alan’s little figure gradually fading into the night. I felt I should do something for him. It impressed me how much effort his mother had put into supporting him, even with limited resources. I decided to help them more in the future.
