Opie is employed to a top-secret organization of mind readers called the Resistance. When Varling captures the mind readers and tries to turn their school into a factory, Opie puts her mind-reading skills to work to save the day. Sai, a resourceful 12-year-old girl, works for a famous mapmaker. But she has a secret: She’s the daughter of a con man. When she gets an opportunity to earn more money than she’s ever had, she jumps at the chance for a new life. Sai joins an expedition to map the Sunderlands, a continent said to be home to dragons. This book, now in paperback, is for adventure lovers who seek an attractive story that’s full of surprises. — By TFK Kid Reporter Alexa Oh Gossamer In her novel Gossamer, Lois Lowry explores how dreams and nightmares come to be. The book follows several storylines involving tiny dream-giving creatures and the humans they affect. Littlest One is a new dream-giver. From her teacher Thin Elderly, she learns how to collect pieces of memories and turn them into dreams. These are given to an elderly woman, a troubled boy, and a young mother. Anyone who loves imaginative tales will love Gossamer. During my six-month stay there, I spent the last 4 weeks at GVI Karongwe. The GVI members were so helpful and were so kind and lovely too when I was there. It was one of the easiest and best-organised programs I spent my time on. Every day we collected information on a variety of animals for research. The first week was pretty busy with training to prepare us for our job in the bush (灌木) and teach us about mammals (哺乳动物), birds and other animals, tracks and signs as well as how to use the equipment (设备), take care of the cars and clean and cook for a house of more than 20 people. The training made a world of difference to anyone who was nervous about being new to the South African wilderness and wanted to do the job well. I also made friends with people from all over the world and they were of all ages and backgrounds, united by the common goal to contribute to wildlife protection in South Africa, which was so amazing! They use devices to stay in contact with family and friends while driving. The most common method of communication is by sending written messages, a custom known as texting. A new study suggests that more than half of U. S. parents believe texting while driving a car or other vehicles is unsafe. Yet most of those questioned said they do it anyway. The finding was reported earlier this month in a scientific publication. Researchers questioned 435 parents from across the United States. Regan Bergmark, who led the survey, said that many people believe texting while driving is unsafe but have also likely done it. In fact, the survey found that 52 percent of millennial (千禧年的) parents said they thought it was “never” safe to text and drive. The same goes for 58 percent of older parents. But almost two-thirds of parents reported reading texts while driving, and more than half of them have also written texts.Millennial parents were more likely to use email while driving and drive faster than the speed limit. “The problem with smartphones is that they have become an unavoidable part of daily life for most people,” Regan said. “Many people are expected to be reachable by phone or email immediately, to be reachable for their children or work.Being a responsible adult therefore often means always being reachable-yet we also know that while driving.Being reachable carries with it the risk of a crash. ” In general,it is never safe to use a smartphone while driving. There are a number of APPs that can help to limit distracted (分心的) driving by disabling phone features, when the vehicle is in motion. The simplest thing to do is put the phone out of sight and out of reach to reduce the temptation (诱惑) to drive distractedly. 8. What is the main problem described in Paragraph 2? A. People use smartphones to keep in touch with others. B. People tend to drive faster than the speed limit. C. People tend to write text messages rather than use email. D. People use smartphones while driving despite the danger. 9 What can we infer from Regan’s words? A People in modern society can’t live without smartphones. B. People are expected to be reachable every second. C. It’s unwise to be always reachable while driving. D. It’s dangerous to drive because of the risk of a crash. 10. In the last paragraph, the author means to . A. summarize the previous paragraphs B. provide some advice for the readers C. add some background information D. introduce a new topic for discussion 11. Where is the text most likely from? A. A novel. B. A guidebook. C. A scientific report. D. A medical magazine. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段中“A new study suggests that more than half of U. S. parents believe texting while driving a car or other vehicles is unsafe. Yet most of those questioned said they do it anyway. (一项新研究表明,美国超过一半的父母认为在驾驶汽车或其他载具时发消息是不安全的。然而参加调查的人中大多数都表示他们还是这样做过)”可知,第二段描述的主要问题就是人们会不顾危险在开车时使用手机。故选D项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段引述Regan的原话“Many people are expected to be reachable by phone or email immediately, to be reachable for their children or work.Being a responsible adult therefore often means always being reachable-yet we also know that while driving.Being reachable carries with it the risk of a crash.(许多人都希望能通过电话或电子邮件立即联系到他们,他们的孩子或工作上的事也可以联系到他们。因此,作为一个负责任的成年人,通常意味着总是可以联系到,哪怕是在开车时。时刻保持联系就带来了车祸的风险。)”可知,尽管时刻与外界保持联系是现代社会的要求,但在进行开车这样需要高度专注的活动时还要这样是很不明智、很不安全的。故选C项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“In general, it is never safe to use a smartphone while driving. There are a number of APPs that can help to limit distracted (分心的) driving by disabling phone features, when the vehicle is in motion. The simplest thing to do is put the phone out of sight and out of reach to reduce the temptation (诱惑) to drive distractedly.(总的来说,开车时用手机是绝对不安全的。有很多的APP能在车辆运转时通过禁用手机功能来帮助限制开车时分心的情况。最简单的做法就是把手机放在眼睛看不到、手碰不着的地方,从而减少因此而分心的诱惑)”可知,作者在最后一段提供了一些关于开车时使用手机的建议。故选B项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。总览全文可知,本文内容是关于开车时使用手机的一项调查的结果说明与分析,调查研究最可能出自科学报道。故选C项。 D There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us tide through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you. I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke? Laughing is essential to keeping your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together. 12. What is the author’s attitude towards the present world? A. Positive. B. Satisfied. C. Critical. D. Indifferent. 13. The author answers the question in the second paragraph with . A. evidence and argument B. opinions and persuasion C. examples and conclusion D. descriptions and analysis 14. The phrase “busting a gut” underlined in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by . A. speaking loudly B. laughing hard C. acting strangely D. explaining carefully 15. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to . A. talk about his own understanding of humor B. introduce a practical way to get through daily life C. encourage people to make jokes about serious matters D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第一段“There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today(当今世界存在着残酷的战争、战斗和悲伤)”可知,作者对当今世界持批评的态度,故选C。 根据第二段“I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you.(我总是说一些让别人微笑或大笑的话,即使我不知道和我开玩笑的人是谁。我奶奶总是在她做的每件事中找到幽默,即使那是任何人能想象到的最困难的工作。这不仅在任何情况下都能缓解压力,而且对你周围的人说话也是一种礼貌。)”可知,第二段用证据来说明幽默的好处,因此是通过证据与论证来回答第二段的问题,故选A。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh.(他们周围的每个人都可能在听到一个很棒的笑话后在地板上打滚,他们会坐在那里,脸上没有一丝微笑。他们听不懂让别人发笑的笑话。)”和“while they just sit there(而他们只是坐在那里)”可知,作者听到笑话会笑得很厉害,划线短语busting a gut的意思是“大笑”。 通读全文,尤其是最后一段“We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.(我们都需要找到一种方法来绕过悲伤,给我们的生活带来一点光明。所以,我相信我们最好的药是聚在一起,讲一些笑话,一起笑得开心。)”可知,本文作者给大家论述了幽默和笑的重要性,因此目的是让人们相信对生活保持乐观的力量。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 All living things need clean, fresh water to survive. Ninety-seven percent of the water on earth is in the ocean. The salt in the ocean water makes it unusable for drinking. Where you live, the amount of rain that falls, and how water is collected and reserved all affect the amount of cool, clear water available. One factor that we can’t change is where it will rain. The amount of rain an area receives affects the amount of water available for use. Some major cities are located in areas where they can get water from the ground. ___17___ Those places with no water readily available must pipe water in from far away. According to a study done by the state of California, the average person uses over one hundred gallons of water per day. Water is used for drinking, taking a shower or bath, brushing teeth, washing hands, cleaning dishes, doing laundry, and flushing toilets. ___18___ No matter where you live, there are many ways you can help conserve water. It’s also important to fix leaky faucets. If you find one, let your parents know. A good way to have cool water available all the time is to keep a pitcher in the fridge. This way you won’t have to wait for the water in the pipes to bring you colder water to drink. Only run your clothes washer and dishwasher when they are full. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year. All of these will help to conserve water. Leaning to use it wisely will ensure that it will always be available. So, make a fuss and conserve water. It’s worth it! A. Using water wisely is important. B. Water is an important natural resource. C. Don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth. D. Other areas use surface water from lakes, rivers, or streams. E. This leaves one percent of the water on Earth available for us to use. F. Installing these items in your home is the first line of defense against wasting water. G. Wherever we live, we must be careful with the polluted water we have in our part of the world. E 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文的“All living things need clean, fresh water to survive. Ninety-seven percent of the water on earth is in the ocean. The amount of rain an area receives affects the amount of water available for use. Some major cities are located in areas where they can get water from the ground.(我们不能改变的一个因素是下雨的地点。一个地区的降雨量影响着可用水量。一些大城市位于可以从地下取水的地区。)”和下文的“Those places with no water readily available must pipe water in from far away.(那些没有可用水的地方必须从很远的地方用管道输水。)” 【18题详解】 根据上文的“According to a study done by the state of California, the average person uses over one hundred gallons of water per day. Water is used for drinking, taking a shower or bath, brushing teeth, washing hands, cleaning dishes, doing laundry, and flushing toilets. (根据加利福尼亚州的一项研究,平均每人每天使用超过100加仑的水。水用于饮用、淋浴或洗澡、刷牙、洗手、洗碗、洗衣服和冲厕所。)”可知,该州的人均用水量是比较大的,因此A项(合理地用水是很重要的。)承接上文,说明了,合理用水的必要性。故选A项。 【19题详解】 根据上文的“No matter where you live, there are many ways you can help conserve water. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.(用淋浴代替泡澡。 I’m standing in a class of wild 14-year-old girls as they throw paper and howl with laughter. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. This was not easy on her either. We had both been dreading (害怕) this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind. All my life I had loved airports. To me they were some kind of magic gateway to the world,a place from which to start great holidays and adventures. But today it seemed like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister and even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face. “You’d better go or you’ll miss your flight,” she said. “I’ll miss you,” I replied, and with those last words I was off. As promised, I did not look back, but by the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (啜泣). “Cheer up, love,” the tall customs officer said with a smile. “It’s not the end of the world, you know.” But to me it was the end of the world, as I had known it. While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I stuffed it on the empty seat next to mine. As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me. Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. Born barely fifteen months apart we not only looked alike, we were alike. Whenever one of us need something, the other one would come along. When the time came for us to go to college, we also went together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country, all I had left were my memories. Paragraph 1: Suddenly the plane shook heavily and the bag next to me fell on the floor. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Suddenly the plane shook heavily and the bag next to me fell on the floor. Startled, I quickly reached down to pick it up, and as I did, a small notebook fell out from the bag. I opened it and immediately recognized my sister’s handwriting. It was a diary she had secretly slipped into my bag before I left. Flipping through the pages, I found heartfelt messages, memories of our childhood, and words of encouragement for my new journey. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of her love and support, even in my absence. Paragraph 2: I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. Her words on the page brought a bittersweet mix of emotions, reminding me of the bond we shared and the strength she always gave me. As I read through the diary, I felt a sense of warmth and comfort, as if she were right there beside me. It was a precious gift that I would cherish throughout my time abroad, a reminder of the unbreakable connection between us despite the physical distance. Holding onto the diary, I knew that no matter where life took me, my sister would always be with me in spirit. Flipping through the pages / turning the pages ②认出,识别:recognize /acknowledge ③珍惜:cherish / treasure /refuse politely 情绪类 ①惊讶的:Startled / Surprised ②泪水夺眶而出:Tears welled up in my eyes / I burst into tears 【点睛】 【高分句型1】It was a diary she had secretly slipped into my bag before I left. During my six-month stay there, I spent the last 4 weeks at GVI Karongwe. The GVI members were so helpful and were so kind and lovely too when I was there. It was one of the easiest and best-organised programs I spent my time on. Every day we collected information on a variety of animals for research. I have to say it changed my life in so many ways and actually guided me on my path to the job I am doing now. GVI programs provide a fantastic way to learn and contribute to the community and wildlife in a hands-on way. It has put me on the path of wildlife research for the rest of my life! 4. Why did the author go to South Africa at first? A. To do a voluntary job there. B. To visit the wild animals there. C. To join in the GVI program there. D. To carry out research there. 5. What did the author think of the training provided at the first week? A. It was necessary and important. B. It was relaxing and creative. C. It was difficult. D. It was too long. 6. What can we learn about the GVI program in South Africa? A. It offers free training and accommodation. B. It helped the author choose her career. C. Its members all have rich knowledge of wildlife. D. Its purpose is to encourage visits to South Africa. 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To give a positive review of the GVI program. B. To tell us the importance of animal protection. C. To tell us what she learned in South Africa. D. To share her experiences in South Africa. C Many people cannot live without modern technology products, especially their smart phones. C People tend to write text messages rather than use email. D. People use smartphones while driving despite the danger. 9 What can we infer from Regan’s words? A. People in modern society can’t live without smartphones. D There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us tide through difficult times in our lives. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
