During my six-month stay there, I spent the last 4 weeks at GVI Karongwe. The GVI members were so helpful and were so kind and lovely too when I was there. It was one of the easiest and best-organised programs I spent my time on. Every day we collected information on a variety of animals for research. I have to say it changed my life in so many ways and actually guided me on my path to the job I am doing now. The first week was pretty busy with training to prepare us for our job in the bush (灌木) and teach us about mammals (哺乳动物), birds and other animals, tracks and signs as well as how to use the equipment (设备), take care of the cars and clean and cook for a house of more than 20 people. The training made a world of difference to anyone who was nervous about being new to the South African wilderness and wanted to do the job well. I also made friends with people from all over the world and they were of all ages and backgrounds, united by the common goal to contribute to wildlife protection in South Africa, which was so amazing! GVI programs provide a fantastic way to learn and contribute to the community and wildlife in a hands-on way. It has put me on the path of wildlife research for the rest of my life! 4. Why did the author go to South Africa at first? A. To do a voluntary job there. B. To visit the wild animals there. C. To join in the GVI program there. D. To carry out research there. 5. What did the author think of the training provided at the first week? A. It was necessary and important. B. It was relaxing and creative. C. It was difficult. D. It was too long. 6. What can we learn about the GVI program in South Africa? A. It offers free training and accommodation. B. It helped the author choose her career. C. Its members all have rich knowledge of wildlife. D. Its purpose is to encourage visits to South Africa. 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To give a positive review of the GVI program. B. To tell us the importance of animal protection. C. To tell us what she learned in South Africa. D. To share her experiences in South Africa. C Many people cannot live without modern technology products, especially their smart phones. They use devices to stay in contact with family and friends while driving. The most common method of communication is by sending written messages, a custom known as texting. A new study suggests that more than half of U. S. parents believe texting while driving a car or other vehicles is unsafe. Yet most of those questioned said they do it anyway. The finding was reported earlier this month in a scientific publication. Researchers questioned 435 parents from across the United States. Regan Bergmark, who led the survey, said that many people believe texting while driving is unsafe but have also likely done it. In fact, the survey found that 52 percent of millennial (千禧年的) parents said they thought it was “never” safe to text and drive. The same goes for 58 percent of older parents. But almost two-thirds of parents reported reading texts while driving, and more than half of them have also written texts.Millennial parents were more likely to use email while driving and drive faster than the speed limit. “The problem with smartphones is that they have become an unavoidable part of daily life for most people,” Regan said. “Many people are expected to be reachable by phone or email immediately, to be reachable for their children or work.Being a responsible adult therefore often means always being reachable-yet we also know that while driving.Being reachable carries with it the risk of a crash. ” In general,it is never safe to use a smartphone while driving. There are a number of APPs that can help to limit distracted (分心的) driving by disabling phone features, when the vehicle is in motion. The simplest thing to do is put the phone out of sight and out of reach to reduce the temptation (诱惑) to drive distractedly. 8. What is the main problem described in Paragraph 2? A. People use smartphones to keep in touch with others. B. People tend to drive faster than the speed limit. C. People tend to write text messages rather than use email. D. People use smartphones while driving despite the danger. 9. What can we infer from Regan’s words? A. People in modern society can’t live without smartphones. B. People are expected to be reachable every second. C. It’s unwise to be always reachable while driving. D. It’s dangerous to drive because of the risk of a crash. 10. In the last paragraph, the author means to . A. summarize the previous paragraphs B. provide some advice for the readers C. add some background information D. introduce a new topic for discussion 11. Where is the text most likely from? A. A novel. B. A guidebook. C. A scientific report. D. A medical magazine. D There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us tide through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you. I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke? Laughing is essential to keeping your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together. 12. What is the author’s attitude towards the present world? A. Positive. B. Satisfied. C. Critical. D. Indifferent. 13. The author answers the question in the second paragraph with . A. evidence and argument B. opinions and persuasion C. examples and conclusion D. descriptions and analysis 14. The phrase “busting a gut” underlined in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by . A. speaking loudly B. laughing hard C. acting strangely D. explaining carefully 15. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to . A. talk about his own understanding of humor B. introduce a practical way to get through daily life C. encourage people to make jokes about serious matters D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 All living things need clean, fresh water to survive. It’s also important to fix leaky faucets. If you find one, let your parents know. A good way to have cool water available all the time is to keep a pitcher in the fridge. This way you won’t have to wait for the water in the pipes to bring you colder water to drink. Only run your clothes washer and dishwasher when they are full. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year. All of these will help to conserve water. Leaning to use it wisely will ensure that it will always be available. So, make a fuss and conserve water. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. This was not easy on her either. We had both been dreading (害怕) this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind. All my life I had loved airports. To me they were some kind of magic gateway to the world,a place from which to start great holidays and adventures. But today it seemed like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister and even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face. “You’d better go or you’ll miss your flight,” she said. “I’ll miss you,” I replied, and with those last words I was off. As promised, I did not look back, but by the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (啜泣). “Cheer up, love,” the tall customs officer said with a smile. “It’s not the end of the world, you know.” But to me it was the end of the world, as I had known it. While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I stuffed it on the empty seat next to mine. As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me. Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. Born barely fifteen months apart we not only looked alike, we were alike. Whenever one of us need something, the other one would come along. When the time came for us to go to college, we also went together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country, all I had left were my memories. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Suddenly the plane shook heavily and the bag next to me fell on the floor. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 昌宁县第二中学高二年级2024年秋季学期12月份月考 英语试卷 测试时间:120分钟 满分:150分 注意事项: 1. 1. It was a diary she had secretly slipped into my bag before I left. Flipping through the pages, I found heartfelt messages, memories of our childhood, and words of encouragement for my new journey. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of her love and support, even in my absence. Paragraph 2: I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. Her words on the page brought a bittersweet mix of emotions, reminding me of the bond we shared and the strength she always gave me. As I read through the diary, I felt a sense of warmth and comfort, as if she were right there beside me. It was a precious gift that I would cherish throughout my time abroad, a reminder of the unbreakable connection between us despite the physical distance. Holding onto the diary, I knew that no matter where life took me, my sister would always be with me in spirit. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
