(2024·安徽合肥·一模)I have loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it when Mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother, “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth. ”
I never saw her anger, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened and a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”, but she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive (原谅) me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折叠) and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

(2024·河北石家庄·一模)Napping (打盹) at noon is popular. A nap at midday keeps people more energetic in the afternoon, so whether it’s summer or winter, most workers take a nap break.
A study recently says that compared with Europeans and North Americans, Chinese people take much more time in napping. In companies abroad, workers don’t have much napping time. Some Western companies start work later, sometimes at 10 o’clock, so people are able to wake up naturally in the morning. In such a case, a noon nap is certainly not necessary.
Researchers believe napping may be also caused by different eating habits. Food in European countries and America is mostly more meat and eggs than vegetables, while Chinese food comes mainly from farming. People in the north eat wheaten food (面食) and those in the south eat rice, which has a lot of glucose (葡萄糖). Normally we Chinese get on a full stomach after lunch, so the glucose-rich Chinese diet raises the level of blood glucose (血糖). It leads to sleepiness.
These ideas sound reasonable. However, they do not work on me. Even on days of eating a Western diet, instead of wheaten food or rice, I must take a nap at a quiet place.
According to an American sleep researcher, noon-time napping is a kind of self-protection, that helps to keep people energetic in the afternoon. That is to say, Western people need to take a noon nap, too. Taking a nap for less than 30 minutes is always a healthy habit for all people.
Now a napper is found everywhere: Customers napping on a sofa, on a chair, or on a seat in the train station. I fully understand them. But maybe your napping places make a difference. Those who nap in public places discomfit passers-by, which is not socially accepted. But a person who naps in a private space is regarded as a polite napper.
31.Why does the writer offer a “case” in Paragraph 2?
A.To show Western people are lazier. B.To compare differences between companies.
C.To make the text more interesting. D.To give a reason for the result of the study.
32.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.Napping may be influenced by eating habits. B.Western people eat more meat and eggs.
C.High level of blood glucose leads to sleepiness. D.Chinese food comes mainly from farming.
33.What does the American sleep researcher say about noon-time napping?
A.It makes people feel sleepier sometimes. B.It’s a kind of self-protection that everyone needs.
C.It lowers people’s levels of blood glucose. D.It’s better to have a nap at least 30 minutes.
34.Which word is close to the underlined word “discomfit”?
A.Embarrass. B.Scare. C.Avoid. D.Interest.
35.Which can be a proper title for the text?
A.Popular Napping Ways B.Taking a Noon-time Nap
C.Why Chinese People Nap D.Being a Polite Napper

通读全文并根据“Napping at noon is popular.”

Is it shi (是) or si (斯) in the sentence “Thus, when the Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man... (故天将降大任于是/斯人也)?” Recently, people had a hot discussion online about this. Most people “clearly remember” that it’s si, while their childhood textbooks say it’s shi. It shows how unreliable (不可靠的) our memory can be. 36
Attitudes (态度) and beliefs change our memory
Scientists at Cornell University, US, told college students a story about a man who walked out without paying a restaurant bill. 37 The second group was told that he left because he had to deal with something important at once.
One week later, the first group remembered a higher bill—10 to 25 percent more than the bill actually was. The second group remembered a lower bill. The study showed that how we expect or believe things to happen can change our memories.
38
In another experiment, people watched a film and were asked, “How fast was the white car going when it passed the garden while traveling along the country road?” Actually, there was no garden in the film. 39
Northwestern University scientist Kenneth Paller said that parts of the brain for actually seeing an object and imagining an object overlap (重叠). So imagination after getting a hint (暗示) could leave a memory trace (痕迹) in the brain.
Si or shi
In the case of si or shi, some people said that “si” sounds more like ancient Chinese. 40
On the Internet, the version (版本) of “si” is also more popular than “shi”, giving people a wrong hint.
A.Good memory can help us a lot
B.Remembering what never happened
C.Here are some scientists’ opinions on memory.
D.The first group was told that the man “liked to steal”.
E.That’s why most people connect it with the ancient classic.
F.But about 20 percent of the students said they had seen the garden.
【答案】36.C 37.D 38.B 39.F 40.E

40.根据“In the case of si or shi, some people said that “si” sounds more like ancient Chinese.”

Dear Laura,
Thanks for your message. Yes, I’m having a great time on my exchange program in France. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, 41 there was no reason to be. My host family nice.
They go out of their way to make me feel at home. The grandmother has a teenage granddaughter about my age who is really kind. She always talks to me in French to help practice. And you wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has 42 (improve)! I’m very comfortable speaking French now. Although I still make lots of 43 (mistake), it doesn’t worry me as it used to.
My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are really different 44 the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn’t put your bread on your plate. You are 45 (suppose) to put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at 46 (one), but now I’m used to it. You shouldn’t eat something with your hands except bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork. Another thing is that it is very 47 (polite) to say you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “It was delicious.” Also, you shouldn’t put your elbows on the table. I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m 48 (gradual) getting used to it. I don’t find French customs so strange any more.
Dear Laura, I’ll write again soon and tell you much 49 (many) about my life in France.
Hope you are having 50 good school year.

根据“My host family nice.” 故填but。
be different from“与……不同”,固定短语。故填from。
根据空前的are,此处应用suppose的过去分词supposed;be supposed to do sth.“应该做某事”。故填supposed。
at first表示“起初”,固定短语,故此处应用one的序数词first。故填first。
根据“If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, ‘It was delicious.’”
修饰动词短语getting used to应用gradual的副词gradually“逐渐”。故填gradually。

Dear Laura,
Thanks for your message.
