Seeing his predicament (困境), the vendor, a kind-hearted man with a warm smile, handed him a newspaper. “Take it,” he said, “it’s on me.” Gates hesitated, but the vendor insisted, “Consider it a gift. It won’t hurt me.”
Months later, Gates found himself at the same airport. Once again, he had no money. Surprisingly, the same vendor was there, and again he offered Gates a free newspaper. Gates tried to refuse, explaining he still had no money, but the vendor wouldn’t hear of it. “I’m giving it from my profits (收益),” he said. “It’s my pleasure.”
Years passed, and Gates became a wealthy and successful person. One day, he remembered the vendor’s generosity and felt a deep desire to repay the kindness. He spent a month and a half finding out the vendor.
Gates asked with a broad smile. “Do you remember me?”
The vendor looked at him closely and replied, “Yes, you’re Gates. I gave you newspapers for free twice.”
Gates nodded. “I want to return the favor. Tell me what you wish for in life, and I will fulfill it.”
The vendor looked at Gates thoughtfully and said, “Sir, how can your help compare to mine? I helped you when I was a poor newspaper vendor. You are offering help now that you are the richest man in the world. How can your help match mine?”

October 14 was International E-Waste Day—a day meant to highlight the problems of electronic waste. This year, the day was focused on “invisible” e-waste—things most people don’t think of as electronics.
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is the name given to old electronic devices that get thrown away. These can include old computers, phones, TVs, as well as all kinds of other electronic devices.
As newer, more advanced devices come out, huge amounts of electronics are thrown away, instead of being recycled. These items often end up in landfills, where the chemicals inside them may be a danger to the environment. Electronics can contain hazardous materials like lead (铅) or mercury. If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems.
Most electronics require rare metals. These metals, like gold, copper, lithium, and cobalt, must be mined from the earth. Often the mining process creates serious pollution. In many cases, these materials are getting harder and harder to find. If more e-waste was recycled, many of those rare metals could be taken from old electronic devices instead of being mined.
A group known as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum) is trying to make people more aware of the problems of e-waste. Recently, WEEE asked researchers from the United Nations (UN) to study a kind of e-waste that’s often not noticed because people don’t consider the items to be electronics. The WEEE calls this category “invisible” e-waste.
Though it’s “invisible”, it’s certainly not a small amount. The invisible e-waste weighs about 19.8 billion pounds. The surprising category leading the invisible e-waste group was toys. Worldwide, roughly 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year. These include items like car racing sets, electric trains, musical toys, and drones. They also include toys with electronic parts, like dolls that speak or games with electronic times. In all, toys make up about 35% of invisible e-waste.
But the problem is far larger than just toys. The report also shows that other everyday items like home alarms, smoke alarms, power tools, and computer cables (电缆) are also big sources of invisible e-waste. The UN report says that 36% of the world’s invisible e-waste comes from these three categories.
WEEE is hoping that as more people—and governments—become aware of e-waste, they will make a much greater effort to make sure electronics get re-used or recycled.
27. Some electronics were thrown away, because ________.
A. they will be recycled B. people no longer need them
C. they contain some polluted chemicals D. the latest and developed devices come out
28. What do we know from the passage?
A. Invisible e-waste is made up of about 35 % toys.
B. “Invisible” e-waste doesn’t contain many harmful chemicals.
C. Rare metals taken from old electronic will produce more pollution.
D. People and the governments have made effort to solve the problems.
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. “Invisible” E-Waste and Its problems

Are You Curious About Curiosity?
Have you ever eagerly wanted to know what gift you would get for your birthday, or what your score was on a school test? Have you ever lifted a stone to see whether any creepy crawlies lived under it? These are examples of what we call curiosity. Curiosity makes people want to explore things, to seek out new information.
People become curious when they know that there is something that they do not know. But People can also be curious because they want to discover something new. We call this type of curiosity general curiosity. Here, curiosity may be less about finding a specific piece of missing information, and more about discovering all sorts of new things. By following your curiosity, you may even learn something that you never knew you did not know!
In the last 10 years, scientists have made progress studying curiosity. Interestingly, people are not only curious about things that make them feel good. They found that bad things can also make people curious. Maybe you have experienced this yourself when you see a fire truck rush by, and you wonder what has happened. Or maybe you have been curious about a scary part in a movie.
One important aspect of curiosity is that people are often curious about information that is not directly useful. Scientists think that you may want to know these things because information itself is valuable or rewarding. But people can also be curious about information or experiences that are rewarding just for the sake of knowing them. Just as you often do something just for the sake of doing it, you may also want to know a piece of information just for the sake of knowing it. In these cases, the reward does not come from money or food, but from the experience or information itself.
Curiosity can give you a mental “push” to seek out information, but curiosity may also be important for remembering that information once you have sought it out. Because you experienced curiosity, you created a new memory or learned something that you did not know before. Scientists have found that if you are curious about a piece of information, you remember this piece of information better. Curiosity can thus be a good thing, because it may help you to learn and remember things better.
Curiosity stimulates people to seek information, to explore, and to find answers. So, the next time you wonder whether any creepy crawlies live under a stone, and you lift it, you may learn something new and your brain may store this information, because it is a valuable thing to learn about the world.
30. You will most probably experience curiosity when you ________.
A. follow your father to explore in a cave B. have to ask for some new ideas for the party
C. are showed around in your friend’s new house D. actively want to know what present is in the box
31. From the passage, we learn that ________.
A. people are curious about useful information
B. curiosity makes us remember the information better
C. either good or bad thing makes people have curiosity
D. people can’t be curious until they find something new
32 The underlined word stimulates in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.
A. controls B. influences C. encourages D. attracts
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To stress the importance of being curious.
B. To advise people to keep curiosity for learning.

What Is Chinese Acupressure Massage (穴位按摩)? — Tui Na
Have you been experiencing a high-stress level and looking for ways to relieve it? You are probably considering therapy (治疗). One of the types of therapy that can help you relieve stress is Shiatsu. It is a Chinese acupressure massage style that means finger pressure.
According to Chinese medicine, the human body contains meridians (中医经脉). The Chinese believe that a particular energy force called qi runs along the meridians. Performing acupressure massage enables the energy that tends to get stuck at different points to flow. People use this form of massage therapy to improve patients’ whole feeling of being comfortable, healthy and happy. It involves using thumb and finger techniques. If energy flow gets stuck, the body fails to maintain the balance required to deal with different health issues. Performing Shiatsu can help combat (减轻) this.
Since Shiatsu improves the flow of energy in the body, therapists believe that it can help manage different conditions. Therapists use Shiatsu to help minimize muscle stiffness (僵硬), menstrual cramps, and headache in patients.
Many experts also use it to treat low back pain, cancer-related fatigue, and pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness.
According to most experts Chinese acupressure massage works. Even clinical evidence proves that Shiatsu is effective in dealing with such conditions. Most Chinese believe that acupressure massage treats the body and spirit and can also help regulate emotions.
If you have a serious health problem, you should first consult with a doctor before going for acupressure massage therapy. Since acupressure is a complementary (补充的) type of treatment, you should not only depend on it, especially when you have a serious condition.
You should avoid acupressure if you have problems such as a rash, burns, open wound, blood cancer, fever, athlete’s foot, or uncontrolled diabetes. Doing it while pregnant can be uncomfortable due to challenges such as difficulty lying on your back. If you are feeling dizzy, you should be careful during acupressure massage therapy.
While some people practice acupressure by choosing professionals, some prefer at-home Shiatsu massagers. Though both options work, acupressure with a professional’s help is better since the expert can transfer energy and a sense of healing through their personal touch.

We can play basketball and volleyball, and we can learn Baduanjin in PE class. After school, we can also join some sports clubs. I am a member of football club and I always enjoy playing football with my teammates. It’s so exciting!
Doing these exercise activities has made a big difference to my life. On the one hand, I build up my body and brain and become active. On the other hand, I have made many friends who have the same interest.
I hope the above is helpful. Please feel free to ask for more information.
Yours,
Li Hua

The Truly Rich Man
Gates lived in New York. Though he was not rich or famous, he was ambitious and determined. One day, as he hurried through the airport, he realized he wanted a newspaper to pass the time. Getting to a vendor, he fumbled through his pockets but found he had no money.
In that moment, Gates realized the vendor’s generosity came from a heart that didn’t need wealth to give. From that day on, Gates carried the lesson with him: true wealth is measured not by what you have, but by what you give.

October 14 was International E-Waste Day—a day meant to highlight the problems of electronic waste. This year, the day was focused on “invisible” e-waste—things most people don’t think of as electronics.
Electronic waste or e-waste, is the name given to old electronic devices that get thrown away.
B. The Introduction of Electronic Waste Day
C. Electronic Waste Day Helps “Invisible” E-Waste
D Electronic Waste Day Highlights “Invisible” E-Waste
D
D. people can’t be curious until they find something new
32. The underlined word stimulates in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.
A. controls B. influences C. encourages D. attracts
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To stress the importance of being curious.
B. To advise people to keep curiosity for learning.
C. To help people to know what we are curious about.
D. To explain why people are curious something new.

According to most experts, Chinese acupressure massage works.
