In the 21st century, genetics(遗传学) has become one of
the most important of all science. Scientists are finding the
genes(基因) that lead to diseases, making new medicines and
redesigning living things.
21
According to the knowledge we have learned in biology,
we can know that genes are made up of DNA, which is stored
inside each cell(细胞). It’s now possible to read the models
in a person’s DNA. This makes scientists do more things, such
as seeing whether two people belong to the same family.
Genetic engineering means making changes to DNA in
order to change the way living things work. It is used to make
new types of crops and farm animals.
Many farmers now grow crops that have been genetically
modified(转基因). They are usually more hardy than natural,
unmodified plants, so they produce bigger crops and make more
money for farmers. For example, scientists have produced a kind
of strawberry that can withstand frost(耐寒). To do this, they
moved a gene from a fish that lives in freezing conditions into
the strawberry’s DNA.
Soon, scientists may begin to change human genes. This
could have all kinds of medical uses. For example, it could
make it possible for people to live much longer. It might also
be possible to improve people’s memory and strength.
