Weng Qian, a 29-year-old perfumer, has recently invented a
number of perfumes to express her understanding of these

spokespersons of their scents(香味). “As a fan of Chinese
culture, I wondered why an ancient person couldn’t serve as a
spokesperson,” Weng said. She wants to use her Western
perfume training to bring new energy into traditional culture.

into perfume, Weng took Xishi as an example. “The gardenia
(栀子花), her favorite flower, makes up much of the scent,”
Weng said. “I also used folium artemisiae argyi(艾叶) to
make the freshness and sweetness of the gardenia stronger. I
chose lemon and blackcurrant(黑醋栗) to draw attention,
setting the stage for the ‘leading scent’. I finished with musk
(麝香) to add a touch of softness.”
