B When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had. The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns; prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers; integrating crops, trees and livestock; and shielding soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work. I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I created a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities. In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium. Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die. 24. How did the author use to improve the soil? A. By adding rich soil. B. By covering it with bags. C. By removing the weeds. D. By applying chemical fertilizer. 25. What does the underlined word “shielding” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring. 26. What is the purpose of paragraph 4? A. To explain the process of transplanting. B. To illustrate the prevention of insect attacks. C. To stress the competition of different species. D. To state the formation of multi-species communities. 27. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers C “What’s special about our species?” is a question scientists have wrestled with for centuries. Now an evolutionary anthropologist Thomas Morgan has a new theory that could change the way we perceive ourselves, and the world. “It was basically accepted that it was the ability of human culture — the shared body of knowledge passed down across generations — to accumulate (累积) and evolve that made us special, but our new discoveries are challenging that and forcing us to rethink what makes us as a species unique,” said Morgan. Just as humans pass on knowledge to our children, when a new queen leafcutter ant hatches, she collects a little mouthful of her mother’s genetic material to start a new family. Even locusts use complex evolving systems to adapt to local conditions, relying on epigenetic changes — how factors like age and environment can change gene activity without changing DNA sequence (序列) — to quickly evolve between green or yellow-and-black forms based on overpopulation. So, if animals do have evolving cultures, then what’s special about human culture? Morgan pointed out that we humans are so special because of our “open-endedness” — our ability to communicate and understand an infinite number of possibilities in life, whereas animals’ inability to easily imagine complicated sequences or subgoals limits their way of thinking. “For example, when I’m making my boys’ breakfast in the morning, it’s a nested, multi-step process. First, I need to get the bowls and pots and other equipment. Then I put the ingredients in the pot, all in the right amounts and order, cook it, monitoring temperature until it reaches the right consistency, and then serve it up. Each of these steps is a subgoal. This complex procedure is hard for animals to interpret,” said Morgan. When it comes to the limit of this system, human brains just keep going, which allows us to perform a near-infinite set of behaviors — this is open-endedness. 28. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. The human culture. B. The common belief. C. The latest discovery. D. The new species. 29. What can be learned in paragraph 3? A. The fittest are likely to survive best. B. DNA’ s sequence is basically unstable. C. Culture accumulation isn’t exclusive to humans. D. Parents attach importance to children’ s education. 30. Why does Morgan cite the breakfast-making example? A. To display his superb cooking skills. B. To explain the complexity of cooking. C. To stress the importance of goal-setting. D. To show animals’ struggle with subgoals. 31. Which can best describe the core of human open-endedness? A. Orderly. B. Boundless. C. Consistent. D. Inclusive. D People’s tendency to follow trends, especially on social media — even when they look silly or take risks doing so — is definitely a common phenomenon. What does psychology say about trend following — and is there a way to break free from the desire to follow the newest craze? According to Psychologist Pamela B. Rutledge, following trends isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental instability. Rather, it is an entirely natural behavior embedded in humanity’s fundamental need to belong to a social group and establish connections with others. Historically, following trends was crucial for our survival. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that early humans worked together to transport stone tools over long distances about two million years ago in what is now Kenya — cooperation that allowed them to survive in a severe environment. And though following a trend on social media isn’t exactly as important as outrunning a saber-toothed tiger, human evolution has programmed our brains to be receptive to social signals. Another contributing factor the social cognition (认知) — the processes that determine what we notice and how we respond to others — largely takes place in the parts of the brain that oversee sight, pattern recognition, decision-making, empathy, and similar functions. “Thanks to our humans’ complex cognitive systems, our brains are really good at identifying patterns and stimulating behavior that communicates our social status. As a result, you can use almost anything to signal your membership or affiliation with a social group. Giving off the right social signals lets others know which group you belong to or want to engage with — and those signals are monitored and interpreted by others. Referred to as identity signaling, these behaviors can range from putting a bumper sticker on a car to selecting a brand of clothing,” said Rutledge. Almost everyone follows trends in social groups, without exception. However, tweens, teenagers, and young adults are especially likely to follow trends, including risky ones, due to their heightened desire for acceptance and belonging among peers. Therefore, it’s of great significance to guide them during their journey towards maturity. 32. What does Rutledge think of following trends? A. Changeable. B. Reasonable. C. Odd. D. Risky. 33. Why did early humans prefer to follow trends? A. To remove mental weakness. B. To show their social status. C. To live through difficulties. D. To expand their population. 34. What is the hidden meaning of identity signaling? A. Good taste in fashion. B. Blind pursuit of novelty. C. A true reflection of personality. D. A keen thirst for belonging. 35. What will the follow-up paragraph most probably talk about? A. Tips on embracing trends sensibly. B. Insights into forthcoming trends. C. Parental guidance in kids’ future jobs. D. Psychology behind trend adoption. It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is changing the way we work. With more and more simpler tasks being automated, humans are left with more high-level cognitive work, such as idea generation, strategic planning, and creative writing. ____36____ The problem is that we still follow a mindset that resembles the era of assembly (组装) lines, which doesn’t foster or facilitate the type of work needed today. Leaders constantly measured productivity in terms of how many hours an employee spent at work or the number of abstract targets they reached. ____37____ This type of output doesn’t fit in the era of AI. Instead, we have to make a psychological switch, structuring each workday for quality instead of quantity. Start by kicking the old method of continuous work throughout the day. Research shows that continuous work impairs creative idea generation and high quality, complex cognitive work. ____38____ It’s recommended that using work sessions that are about 90 minutes long, attacking the hardest part of the task in the first 20 minutes and moving to the slower, easier work during the remaining time. ____39____ Therefore, managers should consider the principal area that a team or individual is working on rather than imposing the same work schedule across a team or an organization. Data suggests that it’s better to work on tasks that involve creativity, imagination, and problem solving during the first few hours of the day and again right before you go to sleep. ____40____ In between the focused work sessions, make time for a nap or for easy work that doesn’t require much creativity or focus. A. That’s because people tend to overwork. B. The time of day will also make a difference. C. As a result, quantity of work was prioritized. D. To excel in the new era we’ll need to transform how we work. E. With every new technology comes fear and then new opportunity. F. Because of that, it’s better to work in bursts, giving the mind a rest. G. The middle of the day is better for something calling for concentration. Last week, a plate of DIY baked cookies saved me from myself. You can choose to do it alone or in pairs,” Mr. Lee, the science teacher, announced, “Your goal is to design a recycling corner that will increase recycling rates in our classroom. The best idea will be adopted school-wide.” The classroom erupted into enthusiastic chatter as students paired up and began their discussions. Being a nature and animal lover, Lucy’s dream was big. She imagined birds and fish thriving (茁壮成长) in a plastic-free environment, inspired by her hours spent observing wildlife at her favorite lake. “The first step toward a plastic-free habitat is fostering a recycling habit,” she thought, “I’m sure I can come up with a brilliant idea for the project!” Her daydreaming was interrupted by a light tap from her best friend, Max. “Do you still have that book on recycling? I’m sure there are many helpful tips that we could use for this project. Shall we work on this together?” Max inquired expectantly. Lucy recalled having read the library book the previous night and placing it on her bedside table. “Um ...” she hesitated, “I returned it this morning... and I’m thinking of working on this project alone.” “Oh, I see,” Max walked away, disappointed. The next day, Lucy started working on her project, a smart dustbin. Yes, she had a unique concept for the recycling bin but she struggled to construct it. The design required a standard of workmanship that was simply beyond her capability. Frustrated, she went for a walk downstairs. “Lucy?” she heard a familiar voice and looked up, surprised to find Max standing there. He had never witnessed her looking so disheartened before; she was walking heavily along with a discouraged expression, sighing deeply. Concerned, he called out to her. “What happened?” he asked gently. Guilt-ridden, she admitted lying about the book and apologized sincerely. Max forgave her readily. “Well, if you need a partner, all you have to do is ask!” Max replied, smiling. She did so, then excitedly described her design concept of the recycling bin. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lucy and Max’s hard work paid off. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null 2024—2025 学年度第一学期高三质量检测 英语试题 注意事项: 1. Where are the speakers? It’s more interesting than I thought. M: What was your essay about? W: The conservation of an animal. We weren’t assigned one. We could choose, so I chose iguanas. M: Oh, yes! I remember seeing you in the library! You were reading about iguanas then! So what did you do wrong? W: I wrote a long essay, with lots of interesting information about iguanas, such as their food and their evolution, and I even wrote some stories about them. But I didn’t write about how we can help them! I didn’t realize that I had to write down my own thoughts. It’s so silly! M: No worries. Maybe the teacher will allow you to write the essay again. W: I hope so. I’ll ask her tomorrow. 13. What is the woman doing? A Comparing notes. B. Making an interview. C. Seeking cooperation. 14. What did greytHR target? W: A heart-broken image captures a young polar bear sleeping on the melting pieces of a tiny iceberg. British part-time photographer Nima Sarikhani captured the scene in Svalbard, which sits deep inside the Arctic Circle, around 500 miles from the North Pole. The image was crowned the winner of this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. After three days of desperately searching for polar bears through thick fog, Sarikhani finally spotted two polar bears — a younger male and an older male. Just before midnight, as the ship got close to the bears, the younger one climbed onto a small iceberg and carved out a bed with his paws before falling asleep. Sarikhani said this photograph has caused strong emotions in many of those who have seen it. An estimated 26,000 polar bears remain in the wild, and they are at the risk of dying out as rising temperatures melt away the sea ice these animals depend on. Director of the Natural History Museum said, “The heartbreaking image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet. His thought-provoking image is a striking reminder of the essential bond between an animal and its habitat and serves as a visual representation of the harmful impacts of climate warming and habitat loss.” Sarikhani said he hoped his photograph could inspire hope. He added there is still time to fix the mess we have caused. A Mother Earth News is the original guide to living wisely. A Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring. The Whisper of Flowers 【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. 根据文章第一段“In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. 故选A项。 根据第二段划线词前面“Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns; prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers; integrating crops, trees and livestock; 根据文章第四段“In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium. 根据文章第二段“The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. (摆在我面前的挑战是重振土壤)” 和文章最后一段“Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. 故选A项。 C “What’s special about our species?” is a question scientists have wrestled with for centuries. A. Orderly. B. Boundless. C. Consistent. D. Inclusive. B 29. C 30. D 31. 根据划线词上文“It was basically accepted that it was the ability of human culture — the shared body of knowledge passed down across generations — to accumulate (累积) and evolve that made us special, but our new discoveries are challenging(人们基本上认为,是人类文化的能力——代代相传的共同知识体系——积累和进化使我们与众不同,但我们的新发现正在挑战)”可知,but表示转折,上文提到人们普遍信念是人类文化的能力——代代相传的共同知识体系——积累和进化使我们与众不同,但是新发现挑战了这一普遍信念。 根据第三段“Just as humans pass on knowledge to our children, when a new queen leafcutter ant hatches, she collects a little mouthful of her mother’s genetic material to start a new family. Even locusts use complex evolving systems to adapt to local conditions, relying on epigenetic changes — how factors like age and environment can change gene activity without changing DNA sequence (序列) — to quickly evolve between green or yellow-and-black forms based on overpopulation.(就像人类把知识传给我们的孩子一样,当一只新的切叶蚁蚁后孵化出来时,它会收集一小口母亲的遗传物质来组建一个新的家庭。 根据倒数第三段“Morgan pointed out that we humans are so special because of our “open-endedness” — our ability to communicate and understand an infinite number of possibilities in life, whereas animals’ inability to easily imagine complicated sequences or subgoals limits their way of thinking.(摩根指出,我们人类之所以如此特别,是因为我们的“开放性”——我们有能力沟通和理解生活中无数的可能性,而动物无法轻易想象复杂的序列或子目标,这限制了它们的思维方式)”可知,摩根引用做早餐的例子是为了展示动物在子目标上的挣扎。 根据最后一段“When it comes to the limit of this system, human brains just keep going, which allows us to perform a near-infinite set of behaviors— this is open-endedness.(当涉及到这个系统的极限时,人类的大脑只是继续前进,这允许我们执行近乎无限的行为集——那就是开放性)”可知,人类开放性的核心是无限的。故选B。 D People’s tendency to follow trends, especially on social media — even when they look silly or take risks doing so — is definitely a common phenomenon. B 33. C 34. D 35. 根据文章第二段“According to Psychologist Pamela B. Rutledge, following trends isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental instability. Rather, it is an entirely natural behavior embedded in humanity’s fundamental need to belong to a social group and establish connections with others.(根据心理学家Pamela B. Rutledge的说法,跟风并不是性格软弱或精神不稳定的表现。 根据第四段“Thanks to our humans’ complex cognitive systems, our brains are really good at identifying patterns and stimulating behavior that communicates our social status. As a result, you can use almost anything to signal your membership or affiliation with a social group. D. To excel in the new era, we’ll need to transform how we work. E. With every new technology comes fear and then new opportunity. F. Because of that, it’s better to work in bursts, giving the mind a rest. G. The middle of the day is better for something calling for concentration. 36. D 37. C 38. F 39. B 40. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】She did so, then excitedly described her design concept of the recycling bin. “Cool!” Max chirped. Fired up by her brilliant idea, they worked hard together, making spots for paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Over the week, the pair worked tirelessly to build their recycling bin. They included sections for different types of materials and added sensors that would light up when an item was correctly sorted. But if a mistake was made, it flashed red, and a nice robot voice would show the way. They even decorated it with colorful pictures of a clean world without trash, where animals could play. Lucy and Max’s hard work paid off. Their recycling bin wasn’t just a bin; it was a beacon of hope, a call to action, and a testament to partnership and deep love for the planet. On presentation day, their classmates were in awe of their clever design and powerful message. So impressed was Mr. Lee that he advocated for its school-wide adoption. Overjoyed by the positive response, Lucy and Max realized that real change required collective efforts, and their bin stood as tangible evidence that teamwork truly makes the dream work. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①分类:sort/classify/categorize ②装饰:decorate/ornament ③需要:require/need/call for 情绪类 ①鼓舞:fire up/inspire/stimulate ②狂喜的:overjoyed/ecstatic 【点睛】[高分句型1] Fired up by her brilliant idea, they worked hard together, making spots for paper, plastic, glass, and metal.
