At the beginning of this summer holiday, I went to a village in Xianyang to work as a volunteer teacher.
I taught local students how to play chess. I was so nervous during my first class that I couldn’t introduce chess as clearly as I had performed before. When I asked the class a question, nobody raised a hand to answer. It made me feel like my class was really boring. That half hour felt like a year. Finally, I finished my introduction, and it was time for the students to practice. I felt better when I saw that they were able to move most of the chess pieces. However, I found they still had some problems with the knight (马) and the pawn (兵). I had to explain the rules again and again. When the class was over, I felt like I was really poor at teaching others.
In the evening, I reflected on (回想) my lesson. What did I do well? Why wasn’t my lesson good enough? I thought about these questions, and then I practiced more for my second class.
The next day, I felt relaxed. I tried to make my class vibrant and my students showed interest in my lesson. When the class was over, they all wanted to play chess with me. To my surprise, they all played it correctly! This meant they had learned the game successfully and they were interested in playing it! I was happy. My efforts really paid off!
Before I returned to school, I left eleven sets of chess for my students. I hope they will play chess in their free time and have fun with it.

World Letter Writing Day is celebrated in September and it is created to keep the art of letter writing alive in our high-technology age.
For a long time, letter writing used to be the primary means (方法) of long-distance communication. However, now e-mails and text messages have made letter writing a less popular activity. Few people would like to take the time to sit down and write a letter carefully now.
Even though new technologies have provided us with much faster ways to communicate letter writing is still important for some reasons. Writing a letter to someone shows that we care about them a lot, because we spend time doing something people seldom do these days. Handwriting is also a skill we shouldn’t give up because writing by hand stimulates (刺激) our brain in a different way than typing (打字). What’s more, it improves our language processing and reading skills. Another reason is that writing a letter makes us have to pay attention to what we are writing. We often send texts and e-mails so quickly that we don’t think about what influence our words may have. With a handwritten letter, we are forced to be more careful with the words we choose.
So how can we celebrate this day? The best way is to write a letter to someone. It could be a friend or a relative who lives miles away, or someone we have lost touch with over time. Of course, we can also learn the correct way to write a handwritten letter, or just read some famous letters. Whatever we do, we should know that letter writing is still worthwhile (值得做的).
28. Which of the following communication ways are mentioned in the text?
①making phone calls ②writing letters ③sending emails
④making video calls ⑤sending text messages
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ②③⑤ D. ②④⑤
29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Why writing letters is important. B. How to write letters with care.
C. When people should write letters. D. The history of writing letters.
30. What is the best way to celebrate World Letter Writing Day according to the writer?
A. Writing a letter to others.
B. Calling on more people to write letters.
C. Sharing your experience with others.
D. Telling other people something about World Letter Writing Day.

Do you put up your hand when you want to speak in class? If so, you have followed a rule. Rules can be as simple as putting up your hand. They can also be as complicated (复杂的) as knowing when you are “out” in a game.
Rules can be made by anyone. Parents make rules to help children grow up healthily. Rules at home might include washing dishes or cleaning rooms. Teachers make rules to help students learn and stay safe. Putting up your hand ______ asking a question helps the class pay attention to the lesson. Students make rules in games to make sure that they can play without fighting. Rules can be changed often. If you change your minds, you can change the rules.
Laws are rules too, but they are made differently. Laws are made by elected representatives (被选出的代表). Voters (选民) allow their representatives to make laws that can protect people’s right, safety and make sure everyone can be treated fairly. Laws cannot be changed often, so representatives consider laws carefully before making new ones.
The biggest difference between rules and laws is the punishment (处罚) for breaking them. If you break a rule, your punishment might be small, like losing a turn in a game. However, if a person breaks a law, the punishment might be a fine (罚款) or time in prison (监狱).
Rules and laws keep everyone safe. People can work and live together in peace by following rules and laws.

Even though new technologies have provided us with much faster ways to communicate, letter writing is still important for some reasons.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ②③⑤ D. ②④⑤

A. Why writing letters is important. B. How to write letters with care.

A. Writing a letter to others.

【答案】例文
The Lion King is my favorite movie. It tells the story of Simba, a brave and kind lion. He was not brave when he was a little lion. After his father died, he changed a lot. He went through many difficulties and he finally grew strong enough to be a lion king.
I love The Lion King for many reasons. First, it is an interesting movie. Second, it teaches me not to give up when I meet difficulties. After watching the movie, I know one thing—when something terrible happens, what I should do is to try harder and try again.
