Four Natural Wonders
Poás Volcano, Costa Rica
Sitting more than 2,707 metres above sea level, Poás Volcano has been active for hundreds of years. Visitors can still get up close and personal with it at the national park where it’s located (with a reservation).
Tips: Dress warm and bring an umbrella, as rainfall is common at the top of the mountain due to unpredictable weather conditions.
Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora
Mount Otemanu is the main attraction on Bora Bora, an island first made popular during World War I. The massive mountain, which stands 727 metres above the lagoon of Bora Bora, is now the perfect backdrop for dreamy Tahitian sunsets. A few of the luxury resorts on the island which offer great views of the mountain have become hot spots for honeymooners.
Grand Canyon, USA
Arizona has no shortage of impressive mountains and sweeping views, but the Grand Canyon is hands down one of the most diverse geological wonders in the state. Visitors have several options to experience the beauty here: adventure seekers can enjoy an aerial view from a helicopter ride through the canyons or go whitewater rafting down the Colourado River.
Cappadocia, Turkey
You may have seen fascinating photos of colourful hot air balloons against a magical landscape of rugged cliffs, valleys and towers carved into the rocks. It’s hard to believe this place is real but it is and it’s in Cappadocia! For a good position overlooking the landscape of this natural wonder, check out Uchisar Castle or ride during sunrise in a hot air balloon.
21. What will visitors do if they want to see Poás Volcano close by?
A. Notice weather changes. B. Take an umbrella.
C. Put on warm clothes. D. Book in advance.
22. Where will a newlywed couple likely go?
A. Poás Volcano. B. Bora Bora.
C. Grand Canyon. D. Cappadocia.
23. Which two places can be viewed from high above?
A. Poás Volcano and Mount Otemanu. B. Poás Volcano and Grand Canyon.
C. Grand Canyon and Cappadocia. D. Mount Otemanu and Cappadocia.

Being a writer in the 21st century can keep you in front of a screen for so long that it feels like the room is sideways. Being a human with the Internet can mean hours spent on social media, scrolling and posting for so long that your sense of reality actually becomes sideways. Three years ago, I started to search for ways to deal with my anxiety. I had a brilliant idea, one that felt completely foreign to people like me: I’d go outside, to the real outside.
I grew up in the city, not hiking or camping, so I knew nothing about the outdoors. I have three kids with endless energy, so I figured I could solve two questions at once. I would get a breather from my job and the kids would play with insects and realize there is nothing better than nature.
We drove to Great Falls, Virginia, where hundreds of people on any given day spent hours meandering through the hillside and forest. The blue water pulsed, turning white and crashing powerfully hundreds of feet beneath us. The kids held their breath as if they had seen magics. But it’s just nature, just the outside, and that had been there all along. Since then, we’ve been fascinated.
Last summer I felt my home’s walls closing in, so I decided to go camping. I built my first fire. My kids watched my every move, asking every ten minutes to help get more branches and roast meat. About a month, my craving to take a break from the city grew again. We camped two more times before the cold came, each time seeing a bit more of what nature had to offer city folks.
24. Why did the author decide to go outside three years ago?
A. Because he was interested in nature. B. Because he hoped to reduce anxiety.
C. Because he fell in love with camping. D. Because he was eager for the outdoors.
25. What does the author want his kids to do?
A. Enjoy the beauty of nature. B. Stay away from social media.
C. Learn to protect themselves. D. Choose to do what they are fond of.
26. How did the kids feel about the tour to Great Falls?
A. Tired. B. Scared. C. Bored. D. Excited.
27. What does the underlined word “craving” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Memory. B. Chance. C. Desire. D. Ability.
C
If you analyze people’s actions, you will come to the conclusion that they all seek happiness. Every act is in fact a search for it, even if on the surface it doesn’t look so. Happiness is always the main target.
Going to the movies, eating in a restaurant and going to a party are all motivated by the desire to be happy. Who does not dream of a vacation in some fascinating locations, a new car, a new house, or the ideal match? All people daydream, and some even try to make their dream a reality. And why is that? In order to be happy!
Many people endanger themselves by climbing steep mountains, entering unexplored caves, or diving into the deep of the ocean in order to enjoy the few moments of happiness. A thief may steal because he loves the thrill of danger, or because he desires to have quick money to spend. He is actually looking for happiness, though in a perverted way.
Of course, not all actions end in happiness. The motive is happiness, but the results do not always bring the desire. According to some spiritual traditions, we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. The spiritual part is always happy. Rather, it is happiness itself. But the physical body covers this happiness essence (本质). There is a constant desire to find out this happiness. This is the reason why happiness is constantly sought.
However, there is.no need to search for happiness or to create it, or to have all kinds of outer experiences and actions in order to feel it. On the contrary, everything has to be dropped in order to experience it. Every technique, which helps to relax the mind and calm the rush of thoughts will lead to happiness.
28. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that______.
A. many things people do are to attain happiness
B. it is very hard to analyze people’s actions
C. happiness is a daydream
D. one should act carefully so as not to show his purpose
29. The underlined word “perverted” in Paragraph 3 most likely means.
A. difficult. B. unfair. C. cautious. D. illegal.
30. According to the author, why do people seek happiness all the time?
A. All actions don’t result in the expected happiness
B. One’s physical body is controlled by his spiritual part.
C. There is little awareness of the nature of happiness.
D. People are so greedy that it’s hard to satisfy their desires.
31. Which can be the best title?
A. Where is happiness?
B. How to pursue happiness?
C. What is happiness essence?
D. How to relax for happiness?
D
For most ordinary purposes, machine translation (MT) has got a lot better in the past years. The biggest source of improvement has been the adoption of “deep learning” in training translating systems. But improvement has also come about through the expansion of clever companies solving individual tasks. Some have created specialist dictionaries so that important terms can be translated accurately and consistently. Other inventions combine MT with a human translator’s editing tools, which means translators spend most of their time checking and perfecting MT output, rather than doing the work of the translating themselves.
For some translators, being a machine’s editor may sound depressing. This can be seen the other way around, however. A human repeatedly translating identical formulae can get bored. Allowing the machine to do these boring jobs frees the translator to apply specialized knowledge, solving more intellectually satisfying problems.
What are those problems? One Madrid-based translator for a big law firm describes a recent task. It involved making a critical distinction in a legal document: a Spanish word (dolo) that’s properly translated as “wilful misconduct” was translated only as “misconduct” by software. Since the law requires considerably severer punishment when the misconduct is “wilful”, the omission (省略) was potentially disastrous.
Today, many translation firms are proud of using MT, not as a crutch (依赖) but as a means to cut costs and turnaround times. Part of their job becomes knowing what can be automated and what cannot. Instruction manuals can be left to MT while others like a novel legal argument cannot.
The bad news for some translators is that a tap of repeatable, easy work is being turned off. The good news is that what remains will be brain-challenging stuff for people who know a language and something else. Tales of artificial intelligence usually test humans against machines. But the translators of the future will be neither entirely human nor machine. They will be human beings with mechanical enhancements.
32. What can we learn about machine translation from paragraph 1?
A. It has been mostly used by specialists.
B. Lots of efforts have been made to improve it.
C. Some clever companies have made a fortune from it.
D. It has replaced human translators in some simple tasks.
33. What can be inferred from the case mentioned by the Madrid-based translator?
A. Experienced translators are hard to find.
B. Machine translation can be inaccurate.
C. Machine translation has led to many misjudgments.
D. It is difficult for translators to tell“wilful misconduct”from“misconduct”.
34. What is many translation firms’ attitude towards using machine translation today?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A Technology contributes to productive translators
B. Translation is faced with a great technical challenge
C. The translator of the future is a human-machine hybrid
D. Career opportunities in the field of translation are increasing

Barclays Bank and National Westminster Bank offer a Saturday morning service at some of their branches. One exception to this is the Trafalgar Square office whose opening hours are 8:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and Saturday, and 10:00 to 17:00 on Sundays.
If you are overseas visitor, you can change money at Bureaux de Chinge. Also some large hotels, department stores and travel agents offer such services. But be sure to check in advance the rate of exchange, as these vary a lot. In Britain, there is a holiday specially designed for banks. That is the Bank Holiday. On Bank Holiday, banks will be closed and bank workers will have a short vacation.

I grew up in the city not hiking or camping, so I knew nothing about the outdoors.
A. Memory. B. Chance. C. Desire. D. Ability.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者三年前为了减少焦虑,选择走向户外。从此爱上了亲近大自然,还培养孩子一切享受自然之美。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Three years ago, I started to search for ways to deal with my anxiety. I had a brilliant idea, one that felt completely foreign to people like me: I’d go outside, to the real outside.(三年前,我开始寻找解决焦虑的方法。我有一个绝妙的主意,一个对我这样的人来说完全陌生的主意:我要到外面去,到真正的外面去)”可知,作者在三年前决定走出去是因为他希望减少焦虑。故选B。
【25题详解】

【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“We drove to Great Falls, Virginia, where hundreds of people on any given day spent hours meandering through the hillside and forest. The blue water pulsed, turning white and crashing powerfully hundreds of feet beneath us. The kids held their breath as if they had seen magics.(我们开车去了维吉尼亚州的大瀑布镇,在那里,每天都有数百人在山坡和森林里漫步数小时。蓝色的海水在我们下面几百英尺处跳动,变成白色,猛烈地撞击着。孩子们屏住呼吸,仿佛看到了魔法)”可推知,孩子们对大瀑布之旅感到兴奋。故选D。
【27题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“to take a break from the city grew again”以及“We camped two more times before the cold came, each time seeing a bit more of what nature had to offer city folks.(在寒冷来临之前,我们又露营了两次,每次都能看到大自然给城市人提供的更多东西)”可知,后文提到他们又去露营了两次,说明渴望离开城市,休息一下。故划线词意思是“渴望”。故选C。
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. C 31. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章谈论了幸福的本质。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“If you analyze people’s actions, you will come to the conclusion that they all seek happiness. Every act is in fact a search for it, even if on the surface it doesn’t look so. Happiness is always the main target.(如果你分析人们的行为,你会得出结论,他们都在追求幸福。事实上,每一个行为都是在寻找它,即使表面上看起来不是这样。幸福总是主要目标)”和第二段中“Going to the movies, eating in a restaurant and going to a party are all motivated by the desire to be happy.(看电影、在餐厅吃饭、参加聚会,这些都是出于追求幸福的愿望)”可知,人们所做的许多事情都是为了追求幸福。由此可推断出,从前两段中我们可以了解到,人们做的许多事情都是为了获得幸福。故选A项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句前文“A thief may steal because he loves the thrill of danger, or because he desires to have quick money to spend.(小偷偷窃可能是因为他喜欢危险带来的刺激,或者是因为他想要迅速赚到钱)”谈论的是小偷进行偷窃的原因,而偷窃是一种非法的行为,从而推知划线词perverted是“非法的”之意,和D项意思相近。故选D项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“According to some spiritual traditions, we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. The spiritual part is always happy. Rather, it is happiness itself. But the physical body covers this happiness essence (本质). There is a constant desire to find out this happiness. This is the reason why happiness is constantly sought.(根据一些精神传统,我们是物质身体中的精神存在。精神部分总是快乐的。相反,它就是幸福本身。但是物质身体掩盖了这种幸福的本质。有一种不断的愿望想找到这种幸福。这就是不断寻求幸福的原因)”可知,我们的精神部分就是幸福本身,但它被物质身体所掩盖,人们没有意识到这一点,没有意识到幸福的本质,所以就一直在寻找幸福。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“If you analyze people’s actions, you will come to the conclusion that they all seek happiness. Every act is in fact a search for it, even if on the surface it doesn’t look so. Happiness is always the main target.(如果你分析人们的行为,你会得出这样的结论:他们都在寻求幸福。事实上,每一个行为都是在寻找它,即使表面上看起来不是这样。幸福永远是主要目标)”以及纵观全文可知,本篇文章围绕着幸福的本质展开,所以C项“幸福的本质是什么?”是本文最好的标题。故选C项。
A. Technology contributes to productive translators
B. Translation is faced with a great technical challenge
C. The translator of the future is a human-machine hybrid
D. Career opportunities in the field of translation are increasing
【答案】32. B 33. B 34. A 35. C

【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“It involved making a critical distinction in a legal document: a Spanish word (dolo) that’s properly translated as ‘wilful misconduct’ was translated only as ‘misconduct’ by software. Since the law requires considerably severer punishment when the misconduct is ‘wilful’, the omission (省略) was potentially disastrous. (它涉及到在一份法律文件中做出一个关键的区分:一个西班牙语单词(dolo),正确地翻译为‘故意的不当行为’,被软件翻译成‘不当行为’。由于法律要求对‘故意’的不当行为进行相当严厉的惩罚,因此这一疏忽可能是灾难性的。)”可知,机器翻译有时可能不准确。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Today, many translation firms are proud of using MT, not as a crutch (依赖) but as a means to cut costs and turnaround times. (今天,许多翻译公司对使用机器翻译感到自豪,不是作为拐杖,而是作为削减成本和周转时间的一种手段。)”可知,今天许多翻译公司对使用机器翻译的态度是积极的。故选A项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据最后一段中“Tales of artificial intelligence usually test humans against machines. But the translators of the future will be neither entirely human nor machine. They will be human beings with mechanical enhancements. (人工智能的故事通常是人类与机器的较量。但未来的翻译人员既不是完全由人类也不是完全由机器完成的。他们将是具有机械增强功能的人类。)”可知,最后一段点明本文主旨:未来的翻译工作既不会全靠人力,也不会全靠机器,而是要靠人与机器共同完成。C项“未来的翻译器是人机的混合体”符合主题,故选C项。
