Keen to join in the fun? Here are the best UK summer music festivals for 2025. We’ll be updating this page with more as they are announced.
ALSO Festival
Talk tents are pretty much a given at this festival. There will be around 300 inspiring events across 4 stages ranging from comedy to talks from respected speakers. There will be a whole load of delicious food traders to choose from, too.
Required wear: Reading glasses and Docs.
Boardmasters
It’s a festival of surfing and music set against Newquay’s attractive coastline. A beach restaurant hosts DJ sets and parties each day. Plus, there’s a strong focus on sustainability and well-being, with yoga classes and a pop-up “eco spa” where you can relax with sea views.
Required wear: Hawaiian shirt and your fashionable swimsuit.
Field Maneuvers
With a capacity of only 700 people, Field Maneuvers feels more like a private party than a festival. But with good sound systems and really good DJs, it’s got a real community feel, so you can expect to come away with new friends as well as aching feet from all that dancing.
Required wear: Smiley face T-shirt.
Isle of Wight Festival
This festival has since built itself a fresh reputation for properly crowd-pleasing line-ups packed with huge household names. With tickets for kids aged five to twelve priced at just £5.00, and under-fours going free, it’s easy to see why it’s become a truly multi-generational affair.
Required wear: Hat and sunscreen. If it’s sunny on the Isle of Wight, it’s really sunny.
21. Which festival is most suitable for comedy lovers?
A. ALSO Festival. B. Boardmasters. C. Field Maneuvers. D. Isle of Wight Festival.
22. What is special about Field Maneuvers?
A. It hosts expert talks. B. It is family-friendly.
C. It is a micro-festival. D. It offers health services.

Due to the rising cost of rent and seemingly endless loan payments, a growing number of families are living in recreational vehicles and restored school buses. Some retirees are choosing to spend most of the year on cruise ships. But one teenager in Germany has decided to take advantage of his country’s rail system, and has begun living on trains full-time.
Lasse Stolley is a 17-year-old German software developer who spends his mornings grabbing breakfast inside the first-class lounge and his evenings in sleeping cars. He showers in gyms and leisure areas, and washes his clothes at train stations. He fits all of his possessions into a single backpack, including three sets of clothes, hygiene supplies, sleeping necessities, and technology.
The teenager has been living this way since he was 16, when he graduated from high school. He says that originally convincing his parents was a struggle, but eventually they let him go. At first, Stolley had trouble sleeping on the train. And he also had to be careful to make sure his belongings didn’t get stolen at night. But after the first couple of months, he was able to settle into a routine and thoroughly enjoy himself.
Lasse Stolley obtained a BahnCard 100 card, allowing him to board and depart from any Deutsche Bahn unlimitedly. It costs Stolley approximately €10, 000 per year. Since a month’s worth of rent in Germany costs €942 on average, train life is an appealing option for a young adult with dreams of travelling. However, Stolley says the best part is the freedom of not being bound to one place. He is able to take impromptu day trips. On an average day, Stolley can travel over 600 miles. Now he has travelled to more countries than many people ever will in their lifetime, and he shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
24. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Stolley?
A. His activity venues. B. His work schedules.
C. His basic necessities. D. His life arrangements.
25. What can be inferred about Stolley from paragraph 3?
A. He once had his backpack stolen. B. He initially had a tough time on trains.
C. He didn’t get permission from his parents. D. He packed his belongings in several bags.
26. What’s the most attractive to Stolley about his train life?
A. Heavily discounted fares. B. The flexibility of remote work.
C. More chances to make new friends. D. The freedom to go where he wants.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To appeal for low house prices. B. To introduce an unusual lifestyle.
C. To promote the spirit of adventure. D. To explain the benefits of train travel.
C
Sports have got more and more environmentally friendly, whether it’s by reducing plastic waste at venues, or producing medals with recycled materials. But SpoGomi, a competitive sport, is devoted to directly helping the planet. The name “SpoGomi” comes from “sports” and “gomi”, which means “refuse” in Japanese. Japan created SpoGomi in 2008 as a way to promote refuse collection and has organized an annual competition since then.
Now supported by the Nippon Foundation, the sport is so popular that there are competitions around the world, including the first SpoGomi World Cup, which was held in Japan in November 2023. Teams from 21 countries selected through preliminary competitions competed, with the UK team coming out in first place.
SpoGomi has a whole set of rules. Generally, teams are made up of three to five members who have to collect as much refuse as possible within a specified area and time limit. The most common duration is an hour for picking up refuse plus another 20 minutes to correctly sort it. There are other rules set up — from safety rules like being prohibited from picking up litter near roads or railway tracks to sportsmanship rules like respecting the players in other teams.
Points are awarded for every 100 grains of litter collected, with teams earning 10 points for burnable or unburnable waste. 12 points for glass bottles and metal cans, 25 points for PET bottles, and 150 points for cigarette butts. The team with the most litter wins. If one team ties with another, the team with more points will be the winner.
In the end, all participants can be bathed in the pride of making the environment just a little bit cleaner and healthier. Udagawa Takayasu, a spokesperson for the Nippon Foundation, claims, “Although our team could not win in the preliminary tournament held last weekend, the city became markedly cleaner. That’s what I’m proud of. ”
28. What do we know about SpoGomi?
A. It catches on very well. B. It is held every other year.
C. It sets age limits on competitors D. It takes place only in rural areas.
29. How is the winner determined in case of a tie?
A. By the diversity of garbage. B. By the time they spend.
C. By the points they earn. D. By the total weight of litter.
30. Why is Udagawa Takayasu mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight his influence. B. To praise all the organizers.
C. To show his good mentality. D. To prove the author’s point.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Sports: A Driving Force for Clean Environment
B. SpoGomi: A Competitive Sport for Litter Picking
C. Japan: The Host of the First SpoGomi World Cups
D. Britain: The Winner of the First SpoGomi World Cup
D
Colleges and universities across the US have seen a decades-long push for scholars to carry out multidisciplinary research — academic work that combines experts from different fields who mix know how to work on a certain topic.
Recently researchers from Kansas University sought to characterize multidisciplinary research that took place over one decade in the field of psychology. Graduate student Yoshiaki Fujita and Michael Vitevitch, professor and chair of psychology at KU, have published their findings in the journal Humanities and Social Sciences Communications.
Using network analyses, the pair examined articles for the years 2008-2018 listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index database of the Web of Science, under the subject category of “Psychology, Multidisciplinary”. They found just 25% of citations from articles in these journals referenced research published in fields outside psychology.
“We were a little staggered to find out even though there are these calls to become more and more multidisciplinary, we’re still really not,” Vitevitch said. “When you look at psychology journals identified as multidisciplinary — they should be reaching out the most to other fields — only about 25% of their citations were to journals from other fields. Half were to other psychology journals, and 25% were to other multidisciplinary psychology journals.”
Fujita and Vitevitch found some topics in psychology attracted multidisciplinary work steadily throughout the decades — such as those relating to physical and mental health — while the percentage of multidisciplinary research for other topics would rise and fall. They looked at topics people were investigating to discover what themes people were studying in this multidisciplinary fashion, and whether there are areas that are really hot and areas that have sort of died off.
The information provided by the network analyses may be useful not only for individual researchers looking for new research questions, but also for academic or research administrators who want to boost multidisciplinary scholarship. Furthermore, the researchers’ approach should also be effective in measuring multidisciplinary research in other fields besides psychology.
32. What does the study focus on?
A. The type of articles that were highly cited.
B. The frequency of the citations to published articles.
C. The extent to which psychology is multidisciplinary.
D. The number of multidisciplinary psychology journals
33. What does the underlined word “staggered” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Excited.
B. Confident.
C. Astonished.
D. Proud.
34. What do the researchers intend to do by studying the article topics?
A. Diversify research themes.
B. Know the author’s preferences.
C. Assess the quality of the papers.
D. Identify promising multidisciplinary topics.
35. What might the author of the text continue talking about?
A. The application of network analyses to other subjects
B. The impact of this study on psychology research.
C. The gaps of multidisciplinary research.
D. The limitations of the study approach.

It was 1978. I was eight, and it was my birthday. I was told to make a list of two or three friends who’d enjoy the water theme park in nearby Tampa, Florida. Since we didn’t have any spare money, the trip would be a packed lunch and no extras. I didn’t care - I was getting a special treat!
The great day arrived, and my mother, younger brother, three friends, and I piled into our old beat-up car. We headed out of town on the 90-minute ride to the amusement park for a day of sun and fun. About halfway to the water park, the car started running badly and the “check engine” light came on. My mom pulled the car over. We were stuck. An hour passed as we waited for someone to stop and help.
A police officer stopped to see if we were all right and called a tow truck (拖车) to pick up the car. On the way to the service station, Mom told the officer that we had been headed to the water park for my birthday treat. The officer dropped us off and left after giving me a short ride in the police car as a birthday present.
At the service station, the mechanic explained the water pump (水泵) needed to be replaced. The cost, plus the tow, would be $135. Mom started crying and pulled me aside. She explained we wouldn’t have enough money to go anywhere but home, and we’d have to save up to go somewhere else for my birthday later. I was disappointed but tried not to show it, knowing even at that age that we didn’t have much money.
We tried to make the best of the day, the six of us having a picnic at the service station with the cake Mom had baked. Eventually, the mechanic called Mom into the office, saying the repairs were completed but he had to make a phone call before we could leave. He told Mom to have a seat and wait.

Twenty minutes later, the police officer came with a wrapped present.

It was always great fun which, I guess, is why we all liked it so much. It wasn’t like any other classes during the day. They all seemed boring compared to our French lessons.

W: Can you tell me a little about your winning photograph?
M: It was the first day of dry weather for a while, and I decided to play around with my new camera. I started out in my own yard. There wasn’t much to photograph until this butterfly happened to land on a large flower, and fortunately I was able to get what turned out to be the prize-winning photo.
W: How do you like the other photos from the competition?
M: I’ve seen the works on display with mine and they are of high standard. There are photos of animals and plants from all over the world.
W: Has anything changed for you since winning the competition?
M: Before winning, I’d been concentrating mainly on taking photos of people. After coming to London for the exhibition and talking to all the other photographers, I intend to get more into doing shots of landscapes in different countries.

【原文】Hello, I’m Sarah Brown. I’ve been a weather forecaster for a television company for seven years. Two years ago, I became the head of the weather department, which has a staff of eleven. At thirty years old, I’m the youngest ever head of weather department and the first woman to do the job.
I normally work eight hours a day and meanwhile, I do ten or twelve forecasts. At night, we all take turns to work. Before doing a weather forecast, I analyze data on the computer. There isn’t much time to learn what I have to say, but fortunately, I’ve never forgotten my words, and so I don’t get nervous.
Because our news and weather service goes out worldwide, people sometimes recognize me in really distant places. Once, in an Indian village, a man took me to have a photo taken with all his family. People occasionally even write and ask me to marry them!

Keen to join in the fun? Here are the best UK summer music festivals for 2025. We’ll be updating this page with more as they are announced.

Talk tents are pretty much a given at this festival. There will be around 300 inspiring events across 4 stages ranging from comedy to talks from respected speakers. There will be a whole load of delicious food traders to choose from, too.

It’s a festival of surfing and music set against Newquay’s attractive coastline. A beach restaurant hosts DJ sets and parties each day. Plus, there’s a strong focus on sustainability and well-being, with yoga classes and a pop-up “eco spa” where you can relax with sea views.

A. Heavily discounted fares. B. The flexibility of remote work.
C More chances to make new friends. D. The freedom to go where he wants.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To appeal for low house prices. B. To introduce an unusual lifestyle.

Now, supported by the Nippon Foundation, the sport is so popular that there are competitions around the world, including the first SpoGomi World Cup, which was held in Japan in November 2023.

【答案】32. C 33. C 34. D 35. A

Bring up general topics. If you’re complete strangers, you can mention easy subjects like a TV show or a movie you’ve seen, or current affairs you saw online. You could make a comment about something like the person’s wearing or anything else you admire. ___38___. Avoid praising someone’s physical appearance too much since it could make some people uncomfortable.
___39___. This classic conversation starter can work in the right circumstances. If you say to someone, “You seem really familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?” it makes it easier to gather and give information and keep a conversation going.
Break the ice with humor. Starting a conversation with humor often brings individuals closer together. An example of this could be, “I’m great at multitasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and be lazy all at once.” Humor is difficult to use with someone you don’t know well. ___40___ However, if you do find someone who shares your sense of humor, it can be the start of a great friendship.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了与陌生人开启对话的几点建议。
【36题详解】
根据上文“You’ve probably been told not to talk to strangers, but it can be really rewarding to communicate with people you don’t know.(你可能被告知不要和陌生人交谈,但与不认识的人交流真的很有意义)”以及后文“not to mention improving your conversational skills.(更不用说提高你的交谈技巧了)”可知,此处是在阐述与陌生人交流的好处,D项“It makes you feel happier and leads to better mental health(它会让你感觉更快乐,并带来更好的心理健康)” 也是在说与陌生人交流带来的积极影响,与前文语境相符,故选D项。
【37题详解】
根据上文“If you feel a little more comfortable with the person, you can test the waters by bringing up family, work and study to see if they want to open up more.(如果你和对方相处感觉更自在一些,你可以通过提及家庭、工作和学习来试探一下,看看他们是否愿意更多地敞开心扉)”可知,这里提到这些话题是开启交流、寻找共同话题的切入点,C项“These are good starting points for common ground(这些是寻找共同话题的良好切入点)”与之呼应,故选C项。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Mention something you appreciate or like about them. You could make a comment about something like the person’s wearing or anything else you admire(提及你欣赏或喜欢他们的地方。你可以对他们的穿着或其他你欣赏的方面发表评论)”以及后文“Avoid praising someone’s physical appearance too much since it could make some people uncomfortable(避免过多夸赞别人的外貌,因为这可能会让一些人感到不舒服)”可知,前文说对别人的穿着或其他欣赏的方面发表评论,后文说避免过度夸赞外貌,可推理此处说的是得到回应后应继续交流,但要避免过度赞美,G项“After receiving a response, continue chatting to learn more about the person(在收到回应后,继续聊天以更多地了解对方)”符合语境,故选G项。
【39题详解】
根据后文“This classic conversation starter can work in the right circumstances. If you say to someone, “You seem really familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?” it makes it easier to gather and give information and keep a conversation going.(这个经典的开场白在合适的情况下是有效的。如果你对某人说:“你看起来很眼熟。我是不是在哪里见过你?” 这样更容易收集和提供信息,让对话继续下去)”可知,这段内容主要围绕询问是否之前见过展开,A 项“Ask if you have met before(询问是否之前见过)”表达的含义符合该段主题,故选A项。
【40题详解】
根据前文“Humor is difficult to use with someone you don’t know well.(幽默很难在你不太熟悉的人身上使用)”可知,这里是在说用幽默开启对话存在风险,与E项“That means using this method to start a conversation can be risky(这意味着用这种方法开始对话可能有风险)”表达的含义一致,故选E项。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的文章。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文:
Twenty minutes later, the police officer came with a wrapped present. He walked up, handed me the present, and wished me a happy birthday. Before I responded, he paid the mechanic for the repairs and tow. It was at that moment that I realized why the mechanic told Mom to wait. He was requested to do so by the police officer who promised to return to pay him. After carefully inspecting the repaired vehicle, the officer said to Mom, “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting so long. The car is working properly now. You may continue your journey.”
With great gratitude, Mom tried to give the $135 back to the officer. Whatever Mom said, the officer would not take the money. He told Mom that he knew we didn’t have much money and that my birthday trip shouldn’t be ruined because of something we had no control over. With these words, he departed hurriedly. To this day, I have been grateful for his kindness. Not only did he save my birthday trip, but he also changed my life. I always help others when I get a chance and try to instill this concept into my children’s lives.
