The world’s oldest known musical instruments are more than 40,000 years old. For tens of thousands of years, humans have been making music for pleasure and to express themselves. Recently, there has been a rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create music. Some AI music has become so popular online. The technology has been used by lots of musicians. Some people think that using AI to produce music isn’t creative enough because it just makes songs out of old music. What do you think? Is AI bad for new music?
Yes—AI music is not creative says Peter
Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician. If companies can use AI to produce popular music that makes lots of money from people buying and listening to it, it could put musicians like me out of work. If musicians can’t earn money from music, there will be far fewer of them creating new songs. Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn’t the same experience as listening to human-made music.
When I create songs, I put different feelings and real experiences into my work, creating songs that connect with people at a deep level. Songs produced by AI aren’t original because the computer just makes music from the old one. AI music isn’t completely creative.
No—AI can produce new ideas, says Mary
I’m a music lover. When I turn on my radio or headphones and a great new song comes on, it makes me feel good. Wonderful music brings people together to sing and dance. If people are enjoying music, does it matter whether it was made by a human or a machine?
I think music makers can use computers, which help to perfect sound and mix different layers of a song. For them, AI is just another new technology, a tool that they can use to express ideas. It won’t replace musicians but they can work with it. Building on AI music could save them time. It could allow much more music to be produced and it could lead to new and special style s of music. AI could create exciting music that humans could never have dreamed of.
Now that you’ve read a bit more about it, tell us what you think at theweekjunior.co.uk. We’ll publish the result next week.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
8. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To suggest what humans can do with the help of AI.
B. To show how AI helps musicians produce new ideas.

9. Which of the following does Mary most probably agree with?
A. AI helps musicians make more money. B. AI music will take the place of musicians.
C. Human-made music is better than AI music. D. AI is a new tool to help musicians express ideas.
10. What does the underlined word “original” mean?
A. New and interesting. B. Similar and real.
C. Private and popular. D. Usual and exciting.

So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites (卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang’e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e I. More interestingly, the moon rover (巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun. because we have a space project called KuaFu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.

14. How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 4?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving an example.
C. By comparing facts. D. By reporting a result.
15. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To spread the traditional Chinese culture.
B. To explain how our scientists develop the space industry.
C. To introduce the achievements in our science and technology.
D. To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? ___16___ But now you should be thankful.
Scientists from the University of Toronto found that forgetting is actually a key part of learning. Clearing out unnecessary information can help our brains work better. ___17___ Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment we live in. ___18___ For example, a supermarket cashier (收银员) meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. However, being forgetful is not always good. Sleep has a great influence on our memories. ___20___ Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information, said Matthew Walker from the University of California.
A. What kind of information is unnecessary?

第三部分 书面表达(共两节,满分27分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
If you’ve struggled (奋力) to save up your pocket money or found it hard not to eat a whole packet of sweets in one go, you’ll understand the power of self-control.
What does self-control mean?
Also known as “willpower”, self-control means giving up short-term rewards for long-term ones. This could be going without things you want to buy now to save up for a future treat, or walking away from an argument in case you say something hurtful.
Psychologist Roy Baumeister (an expert in thoughts and feelings) says willpower is a type of energy. It can be low when people are tired, hungry or stressed. However, there are ways to top it up.
Superpower energy
Self-control is a superpower that can help you achieve your goals. Doing music practice every day means you get better at playing an instrument. Getting up early for sports training will improve your skills and help your team. Willpower helps build healthy habits, like staying away from screens before bed so you get better sleep. It can also help you to manage emotions and gives you the power to make good decisions. There are lots of studies that show good self-control can help make us happier and healthier.
How to improve your self-control
“It doesn’t always feel like it, but we all have willpower,” says scientist Erie Schulze. He explains that it’s like a muscle (肌肉) because the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. The best way to strengthen self-control is getting plenty of sleep and feeding your brain with healthy food. Try focusing on small goals so you don’t use up all your energy in one go. “As the day goes on, that willpower muscle becomes smaller and it’s harder to resist temptation (拒绝诱惑),” Schulze says. When this happens he suggests exercising as this helps you reduce stress and gives energy to the brain. Do something that makes you laugh, says Schulze, as “a good mood can overpower a weak will”.

Over the past twenty years, the two sides have cooperated and solved many technical problems, including important discoveries in key areas like panda raising.
Since the 1990s, China has cooperated on giant panda conservation with 20 countries. “International cooperation in fields such as disease prevention and control, treatment, and wild training and reintroduction to the wild, has achieved good results. Giant pandas will facilitate communication between peoples and let people around the world know China better,” said Li, the leader of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.
“Scientific and educational outreach (延伸服务) also serves as a key role in international giant panda exchanges, allowing more people to understand giant pandas, which provides very good support for our efforts in protecting wild giant pandas,” Li said.

Yes—AI music is not creative, says Peter
C. To share ideas on whether AI is suitable for new music.
D. To explain the reasons why more people like AI music.
11. Which section is most likely to be part of the magazine next week?

From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence it has on our modern science and technology.
12. In China, space scientists get ideas from _________ when naming satellites.
①old stories ②traditional projects
③ancient famous people ④popular inventions
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ①③ D. ③④
13. What do we know about Chang’e I according to the passage?
A. It moves around the moon. B. It protects the Jade Rabbit.
C. It “visits” the sun with the scientists. D. It is the world’s first man-made satellite.
14. How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 4?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving an example.
C By comparing facts. D. By reporting a result.
15. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To spread the traditional Chinese culture.
B To explain how our scientists develop the space industry.
C. To introduce the achievements in our science and technology.
D. To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.

But a designer who often meets his or her customers will remember longer.
That’s because our brains keep making new neurons (神经元) from stem cells (干细胞), said Paul Frankland, a professor at the University of Toronto. There is a special area in our brains called the hippocampus (海马体). ___19___ When new neurons go into the hippocampus, they renew our old memories.
However, being forgetful is not always good. Sleep has a great influence on our memories. ___20___ Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information, said Matthew Walker from the University of California.
A. What kind of information is unnecessary?
B. It is important for us when we learn and remember things.
C. You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing.
D. When we don’t have enough sleep, we may have a hard time remembering new information.
E. In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us to remember less.
F. This can explain why you forget so much information about the time when you were young.
