When facing challenges, I often turn to my mom for help, “Could you help me?” However, her answer always is, “Do it yourself, dear.” This used to make me feel sad, leading me to think of her as a lazy mother.
For example, one day, I invited some friends over, and my bedroom was in a mess. Books were all over the table and floor, and I had forgotten to make my bed. I asked my mother for help to tidy up, but she seriously replied, “Do it yourself, girl.” I had to clean the room myself. Luckily, when my friends arrived, my bedroom was clean enough.
Because of my mother’s laziness, I have to wash my clothes, keep my room clean, and even help with household chores. I even have to go to the dentist by myself when I have a toothache. I do all these things reluctantly with a voice in my heart, “What a cold and lazy mom I have!”
As I grow up, I have understood my mother little by little. Her so-called laziness was actually a way to build my independence. I realized that her words, “A lady can’t be lazy, or she will be crazy. Work can make you sunny.” were the truth. It’s really hard to do everything on my own, but I have learned a lot. Through the early hard times, I learned the importance of depending on myself and got important life skills. Now, I am thankful for the lessons my mother taught me, as they have shaped me into a stronger, more hard-working person.
4. How does the writer feel when her mother says “Do it yourself” at first?
A. Surprised. B. Shameful. C. Unhappy. D. Scared.
5. Why does the writer give an example in Paragraph 2?
A. To show how lazy her mother was. B. To show how dirty her bedroom was.
C. To show her mother was angry with her. D. To show she had to do things herself.
6. What does the underlined word “reluctantly” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 不情愿地 B. 反复地 C. 精心地 D. 不知不觉地
7. What can you learn from the writer’s experience?
A. A girl usually learns from her lazy mother. B. Mothers are good at telling the truth.
C. Kids can grow up without mothers’ help. D. Mom’s “laziness” makes kids independent.

One recent Saturday, still in bed, Anna reached for her phone and typed a text to her mum. Mum was right in the kitchen. Anna wanted pancakes for breakfast.
Soon after, the 13-year-old heard her mum’s angry voice, “Anna, if you want to talk to me, you come and see me!” Anna laughed about it now. “I was kind of being lazy. I know that sounds terrible.”
Well maybe not terrible, but certainly more and more typical. According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, these days, many people like texting better than making phone calls. It’s not always young people, but the younger you are, the more likely you are to enjoy texting.
Some would argue that it’s no big deal. But many experts say the most successful communicators will have the ability to do both, talk and text, and know the best times to use those skills. And they fear that more of us are losing our ability to have the traditional face-to-face conversations that are very important in personal relationships.
Young people think it’s just something they enjoy doing. As Anna sees it, “There are people you’ll text, but won’t call. It’s not about anything important—just a way to stay in touch with each other.” She and her closest friends also send each other videos (录像) of themselves, their dogs or something new in their bedrooms.
Experts say there is, of course, nothing wrong with casual (随意的) conversations and fun between friends. The problem is that the conversation isn’t deep. They suggest that parents put down their own mobile devices (移动设备) first, as children learn from them. Some family rules are also needed, such as “No texting to people in the same house”. But the key is to develop different communication skills.
8. Why did Anna text to her mum?
A. Laziness stopped her from moving. B. She was feeling terribly ill.
C. It was their way of communication. D. She was angry with her mother.
9. What was the finding of the Pew Internet & American Life Project?
A. People spend more and more time on phones.
B. Younger people like texting better than older people.
C. Texting is a better way of communication than phone calls.
D. Successful communicators are good at both texting and talking.
10. What does the underlined word “they” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Phones. B. Texts. C. Experts. D. Abilities.
11. Why do the experts suggest that parents put down their mobile devices?
A. To set examples for children. B. To follow family rules.
C. To stay in touch with friends. D. To learn from children.

Nepal is said to be “the kingdom of snow mountains” with the snow-capped Himalayas on the China-Nepal border. It’s a world-famous country for hiking. But when is the best time to visit Nepal?
Nepal has really unusual geography! The tallest mountain in the world, Mt. Qomolangma, is partly in the north of Nepal. On the other hand, the Terai Plain is the lowest part, only 70 meters above sea level (海平面以上). Because of this special shape of the land, Nepal has five different seasons: autumn, winter, spring, summer, and the monsoon (雨季).
The autumn months of October and November are considered the perfect time to travel to Nepal. During this time, you’ll see bluer and clearer skies. You can also join Dashain Festival (德赛节), a 15-day-long festival and the most colorful festival in Nepal.
The temperature begins to drop in December and January. Winter is perfect for visiting the Chitwan National Park in the south of Nepal. You will get the best chance to see rhinos (犀牛) as well as tigers and elephants in the wild of Nepal’s forest.
During the springtime, from February to April, temperatures slowly go up. The days are longer and are perfect for hiking tours. You can also experience some popular festivals like the Nepalese New Year in April.
May pushes the temperature a bit higher. However, the real summer is quickly cut short by the beginning of the monsoon season. The monsoon wind begins to bring in rain showers from mid-June until September. You can expect around 3 to 4 hours of rain every day during this season.
12. What does the underlined word “lowest” mean in Chinese?
A. 最低的 B. 最潮的 C. 最崎岖的 D. 最平坦的
13. Why does Nepal have five seasons?
A. Because of the snow-capped Himalayas. B. Because of its unusual geography.
C. Because of the height of Mt. Qomolangma. D. Because of the sea level of the country.
14. Which is the best month for hiking in Nepal?
A January. B. March. C. June. D. September.
15. What is True according to the passage?
A. Visitors can’t see elephants in winter. B. Spring is the perfect time to travel to Nepal.
C. The monsoon is the longest season in Nepal. D. The Nepalese New Year is a 15-day-long festival.

Seeing people in your family fight can be really terrible. Whether the fight is about you or not, you might feel sad, angry or even ashamed (难为情的). Do you want to know how to end a family fight? Here are some ideas.
Keep your cool. It’s not easy to keep cool during a fight. If you are very angry, you can try to take a deep breath or count to 10. Before you talk with your family members, you can also make some physical movements.
Call a family meeting. See if there’s a good time that works for everyone in your family to get together. Then you can meet together and talk about the family fight. If you are a young boy or girl, try asking your parents to call a family meeting.
Listen to everyone. Give everyone in the family a chance to speak. That way, everyone can say what’s going on. Sometimes, letting everyone talk is not easy, especially when their words make you mad. However, if you let everyone talk, they’ll listen to what you will say, too.
Use “I” to express your feelings. Instead of blaming (责备) your family members or calling them out, try to speak out your feelings as peacefully as possible. For example, instead of saying “You shout at me too much”, you could say. “I feel afraid when you shout at me.”

Should old things be thrown away?
My answer is “No”. I have an old bike which has been with me for five years. It was a gift from my father on my tenth birthday.
This bike has accompanied me through many important moments. I learned to ride a bike on it, falling countless times but never giving up. It carried me to school every day, witnessing my growth and the changes of seasons.
Although it’s old with a broken bell and a rusty chain, I can’t bear to part with it. It holds so many precious memories of my childhood. It’s not just a bike, it’s a part of my life story. Throwing it away would feel like losing a dear friend. Therefore, I’ll keep it, always reminding me of those wonderful days.
