Keeping kids calm
Purrble comes to the rescue for anxious kids. This toy has seven sensors. They respond to touch.Purrble’s heartbeat speeds up when you play with the toy. Then you comfort Purrble by petting it.This slows its heartbeat down.It calms you too.In a study of 20 families,19 parents said that Purrble helped their kids calm down.
Listen to this
MobiWAN helps you communicate by directing calls through your head. The headset speaker and microphone, created by Mobilus Labs, use boneconduction technology.Sound vibrations(振动)are sent through the wearer’s skull(头骨).This lets workers stay in touch in noisy places, such as a construction site or a ship in a storm.
Read to me
Reading is a challenge for millions of people. They may struggle with poor eyesight, dyslexia,or other issues. But with computer vision and artificial intelligence, the OrCam Read can read any piece of text aloud. The OrCam Read can also read text in multiple languages.
Helping hand
The Mega Cyborg Hand kit was created by Thames & Kosmos. It helps kids build a robotic hand that copies the movements of a real hand. The device is made up of plastic pieces and tubes filled with water.Once assembled(组装)and slipped on,it passes force from the user’s fingers to the fingers of the robotic hand. The Mega Cyborg Hand can be adjusted to fit arms of almost any size.It easily switches from lefthanded to righthanded to “claw”.

When I was 9,we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow,London on a gray January morning.Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me.Without my beloved beaches and endless bluesky days,I felt at a loss and out of place.Until I made a discovery.
Southbank,at an eastern bend in the Thames,is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing.I loved it.I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite:Safe.Safe meant cool.It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it.Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam(横杆),I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up:Safe,man.Safe.A few minutes later, when I landed the trick,my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:“Safe! Safe! Safe!” And that’s what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15,my family moved to Washington.I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming.Within a couple of years,I’d given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004,I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there.I’ve traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear;tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters.Weaving(穿梭)among the kids who rushed by on their boards,I found my way to the beam. Then a railthin teenager,in a baggy white Tshirt, skidded(滑)up to the beam.He sat next to me.He seemed not to notice the man next to him.But soon I caught a few of his glances.“I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly,he began to nod his head.“Safe,man.Safe.”
“Yeah.” I said.“Safe.”

27.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Children should learn a second language.
B.Sport is necessary for children’s health.
C.Children need a sense of belonging.
D.Seeing the world is a must for children.

As aging population gets bigger and dementia(老年痴呆症)more common, more families are struggling with a complex question:How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a fulltime job and several kids?
Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue:ROBOTS.He and his team managed to develop a new type of robots named TP robots.Looking like standup vacuum cleaners attached to an iPad,they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be “in the room” to interact with Mom or Dad.
He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to “look in” on people with mild dementia. He says,“TP robots provide an effective solution for minimizing caregiver burden, especially for those who have career or other outofhome activities.”
Urbanowski and his team have conducted a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Manitoba families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and wellbeing.
Erin Crawford,Program Director from the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times.“It means that family members that can’t be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are still happening,” she says.

In Central America, sea turtle eggs are a popular cuisine dish. The eggs are hugely and secretly harvested onto tables, leaving the sea turtles listed as threatened.Yet we simply do not have the ability to continuously guard large beaches.Scientist Kim Williams was thinking hard when she had an “aha” moment:How about placing a fake egg containing a GPS tracker?
That’s how the special eggs come in.To build them,Williams and colleagues used a 3D printer. Then, they fixed in the smallest GPS tracking devices. As mother turtles laid their eggs under cover of night, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest.Once they are covered in sand from the real ones,“it’s very difficult to tell the difference,”says Williams.
Of the 101 spy eggs,25 were taken away while six of them were quickly discovered and left on the beach. The team received tracking data with the farthest egg travelling 137 kilometers inland and stopping at a local supermarket. The spy egg sent its final signal the next day from a personal house, suggesting that the research team had tracked the eggs all the way.The researchers stress that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves:many of whom are living in poverty, but rather a tool to better understand how the deal goes.
Still stopping stealing is not as simple as handing the tracking data over to the police.Across Central America, trade in sea turtle eggs can be legally ambiguous. In Costa Rica, for example,it is illegal to steal and sell sea turtle eggs but buying them is not a crime. It is not black and white.Meanwhile, local support is in need above all.“It,but not tracking with eggs,is the real meat and potatoes of conservation,” says Williams.

Did you know that about 90% of people in the world are righthanded? Although this subject is rarely discussed, life is often difficult for lefties in a righthanded world.
Many cultures have not been friendly to lefties over the years. 36 In Latin,it was connected with something “unlucky” and “evil”.In Old English,“left” meant “weak”.In Islamic culture, people commonly use their left hand to clean themselves after they use the toilet,so many Muslims feel the left hand is unclean.
Because of these ideas, parents often force their lefthanded children to write with their right hands. 37 Studies show that forcing lefthanded children to use the right hand can cause learning disorders and speech issues.Besides these challenges, lefties must use tools which aren’t made for them. Most scissors, knives, and musical instruments are designed for righties.Using these items can be difficult or even dangerous for lefties.
38 Some believe that it occurs due to gene movements in the spinal cord before birth.Another study has said that there are social reasons why few people are lefties.People may choose to become righthanded to fit in with others.
Though there are challenges, being lefthanded can be good in many ways. 39 This is because righthanders who play against them are not used to their moves. Some studies have also found that on average, lefthanders are better at remembering things and dealing with difficult math problems.
Today, society’s ideas about being lefthanded have started to change.More and more people believe that being lefthanded is a gift to a person instead of a curse(诅咒). 40 It’s on August 13 and called International Lefthanders Day.Lefthanded people gather together to celebrate. This special day lets people know that it’s OK if things aren’t all right all the time.
A.Lefthanders have some disadvantages.
B.There’s even a special day for lefthanders.
C.Being a lefthander sometimes does better jobs.
D.For starters, lefthanders might do better in sports.
E.Scientists still aren’t sure why people become lefthanded.
F.The word was linked to negative ideas in several languages.
G.Unfortunately, this can cause problems with their development.
36.F [根据上文“Many cultures have not been friendly to lefties over the years.”

I have already forgotten the name of that old lady.Yet I still remember the matter as if it happened yesterday. It is she who teaches me a lesson in forgiveness.
It happened when I was twelve years old. That summer holiday,I planned to earn some pocket money by delivering the newspaper in our neighborhood. And she was a customer on my paper route. She was a kind lady and every time I gave her the paper, she would give me some cookies.
On a mindless Saturday afternoon,a friend and I were throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady’s house from a quiet spot in her backyard. The purpose of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles (导弹) as they rolled to the roof’s edge and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky.
I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however,so it slipped from my hand as I let it go.Seeing it headed straight for a small window on the old lady’s back porch (门廊),we stood there, numb with fear. The sound of broken glass awoke us from the fear and the next second,we ran away from the old lady’s yard faster than any of our missiles flowing off her roof.
After coming back home,I was so scared of getting caught that I dared not go out that whole afternoon.I stayed at home, glancing at my front yard nervously from time to time, feeling that lady would knock at our door at any time. But until I went to bed, what I was afraid didn’t happen.Lying in bed,I wondered whether she didn’t discover the broken window or she didn’t discover who had done it? That was a sleepless night.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
The next morning,I delivered the paper to her as usual.
Paragraph 2:
After three weeks,I earned seven dollars and put them in an envelope.
Paragraph 1:
The next morning,I delivered the paper to her as usual. On the way to her home,so nervous was I that I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. But to my surprise,I saw the broken glass had been repaired and she didn’t mention it.When I handed her the paper, she still greeted me and gave me some cookies as usual.Holding these cookies in my hand,a feeling of guilt swept over me and I determined that I would save my paper delivery money to make up for the broken window.
Paragraph 2:
After three weeks,I earned seven dollars and put them in an envelope. I secretly put it through the letter box in her door. After doing this,I suddenly felt in relief. The next day,I handed the old lady her paper and thanked her for the bag of cookies. When I opened the bag,I was stunned.Inside were the seven dollars and a short note that said,“I’m proud of you.” She knew it was me.But instead of blaming and punishing me,she chose to forgive me.Even so many years later, she is still deeply engraved in my mind, who taught me a valuable lesson in my life.
