Here area few books to help you learn more about “The Enlightenment”. Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment This compilation (汇编) by Alan Charles Kors expands beyond the traditional centers of the movement such as Paris, but includes other, less well known centers such as Edinburgh, Geneva, Philadelphia and Milan for consideration. The publisher: “Designed and organized for ease of use, its special features include more than 700 signed articles; a synoptic outline of contents; a comprehensive topical index (索引) providing easy access to networks of related articles; and high quality illustrations.” Portable Enlightenment Reader Issac Kramnick collects easy-to-read selections from the top writers of the Age of Enlightenment, showing how the philosophy informed not just literature and essays, but other areas of society as well. The publisher: “This volume brings together the era’s classic works from a broad range of sources — including works by Kant, Diderot, Newton, Rousseau, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine — that demonstrate the impact of Enlightenment views on philosophy and epistemology (认识论) as well as on political, social, and economic institutions.” Race and the Enlightenment: A Reader Emmanuel Eze collects into one convenient volume the most important and influential writings on race that the European Enlightenment produced. The publisher: “This book is an essential tool for students and researchers interested in exploring the race-inflected nature of eighteenth-century philosophy and science on the one hand, and the systematics relations between philosophy and anthropology and race, on the other.” Creation of the Modern World Most writing about the Enlightenment focuses on France, but very little attention is paid to Britain. Roy Porter definitively shows that underestimating Britain’s role in this movement is misguided. He gives us the works of Pope, Mary and William Godwin, and Defoe as evidence. The publisher: “This new work highlights Britain’s key role in spreading the ideas and culture of the Enlightenment. Moving beyond the numerous histories centered on France and Germany, Roy Porter explains how monumental changes in thinking in Britain influenced worldwide developments.” 1. What does Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment cover? A. Only activities in traditional centers of the movement. B. Activities in Edinburgh, Geneva, Philadelphia and Milan. C. Both traditional centers and less well-known centers. D. Mainly the works of Kant, Newton, Franklin and Pain. 2. Which book focuses specifically on Britain’s role in the Enlightenment? A. Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment. B. Portable Enlightenment Reader. C. Race and the Enlightenment: A Reader. D. Creation of the Modern World. 3. What do the first three books have in common according to the text? A. They are all characterized by being reader-friendly. B. They all contain a comprehensive outline of contents. C. They all provide massive networks of related articles. D. They all emphasize the important role of France. B It’s been almost a year now since my last post on Instagram or Facebook, and almost as long since I even opened them to check posts. I got off the two sites for a simple reason: I was spending too much time on them, and gaining next to nothing in the process. I am not claiming that social media has no uses whatsoever. It has brought the world closer together and helps people keep in touch. It just ceased to work for me. I was increasingly beginning to feel like the people on my social media were less of friends and more of acquaintances(认识的人). In fact, I cannot remember the last time I actually had a conversation with most of them. And knowing about each other’s lives simply through each other’s status updates (状态更新) didn’t feel much like a meaningful way of keeping in touch. Additionally, it’s not fair for me to complain that people get on to social media to make their lives look good because that is the nature of the medium. We post only the good parts and not the bad. What I think is really unfortunate, though, is how easy it seems to be for us to forget this fact when we look at other people’s posts online. The removal of social media from the equation makes things much simpler and more meaningful. I have read more books in 2021 than during any other year in my life so far, and it is at least partly because I don’t spend time scrolling through(浏览) social media. I now have a few close friends to talk face-to-face rather than communicate by Instagram or Facebook. I take pictures and videos of happy moments to store all these memories for myself and my family rather than for my imagined audience online. It may be terribly hard to get off social media for an extended period of time, but it can be worth it. 4. What does the author think of social media? A. People would gain nothing from social media. B. Friends on social media were more like strangers. C. It isn’t a meaningful way to know about friends’ lives. D. It makes the author often check friends’ status updates. 5. What does the underlined phrase “this fact” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. People often complain about social media. B. People use social media to make lives better. C. People classify the posts into good and bad. D. People tend to post good parts on social media. 6. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph? A. The author is now living a more productive life. B. The author has fewer close friends than before. C. It was easy for the author to quit social media. D. The author doesn’t share pictures and videos any more. 7. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text? A. How to Get off Social Media. B. Why I Got off Social Media. C. The Drawbacks of Social Media. D. Life Without Social Media. C When I looked at the Pennington Day dog show’s Look-Alike Contest in suburban New Jersey in the mid-1990s, I had all the confidence of a young girl assured of victory. After all, her puppy had long, floppy ears that perfectly matched her wavy, blond bob. Turns out, there is actual science to back up the stereotype (模式化观念) that dogs look like their owners. A recent review of 15 studies from around the globe suggests that not only people and their pets look and act similarly, but that the similarities between their personalities deepen over time. In many of the studies, scientists asked study volunteers to match pictures of dogs and their owners, which they did better than they would just by chance. Another found that women often had hair of a similar length to the dogs’ ears. So what gives? Experts suspect people choose dogs that look like them or reflect them in some way. The review also showed that dogs and owners have similar personality characteristics, especially extroversion and neuroticism, and that their temperaments (性情) appeared to grow more alike. The study offers different theories for why, including that owners may be drawn to dogs that are like them to begin with, and as they age together, the two species may regulate each other’s emotions, reinforce each other’s behavior, or learn together. “It resembles (像) the way we also look for our partners,” says study leader Yana Bender, a doctoral researcher in the DogStudies Research Group in Germany. Dogs and their owners share “a very close relationship...comparable to many human relationships.” Authors of the review also noted that the number of dogs and owners included in the studies are relatively small. Many of the owners who volunteered to participate in the studies also had purebred dogs, and scientists need more data on hybrid dogs, which are more common worldwide. Additionally, owner bias plays a role: Without a standardized way to assess dogs’ personalities, scientists must ask people to evaluate their own pets, who can be as hard to think about objectively as your human family. 8. Why does the author mention the Look-Alike Contest in the first paragraph? A. To lead in the topic. B. To introduce the contest. C. To give an example. D. To explain the background. 9. What can be inferred from the text? A. People and their pets have similar hairstyles. B. People and their pets mirror each other to some extent. C. Dogs and their partners share a very close relationship. D The similarities between dogs and owners weaken over time. 10. What do we know about dogs and owners in paragraph 4? A. They share the same personality characteristics. B. They resemble in appearance and age. C. The dogs may be attracted by owners who look like them. D. They influence each other in terms of behavior and emotion. 11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The background of the research. B. The focus of the research. C. The limitations of the research. D. The prospect of the research. D AI is deeply changing the way we produce and work, including improving production efficiency, optimizing workflow and enhancing work efficiency. It also involves in medical care, education, transportation and other fields. Be that as it may, what about the downsides? Two experts weigh in. A recent study showed that one of the most popular AI chatbots has been sharing inaccurate coding and computer programming advice. This is because generative AI applications such as large language models work, functionally, as a prediction program. When you ask a question, the AI sifts through (细查) its knowledge base for relevant information. Then, using that information, it predicts a set of words that it perceives as the desired response to your question. That prediction is followed by another prediction — another set of words — that it has been trained to expect should come next, and so on. But Rayid Ghani, a professor of Machine Learning Department, says that process puts greater emphasis on probability than truth: Most generative AI models have been trained on large scale of data from across the Internet, but nobody has checked the accuracy of those data, nor does the AI understand what is or isn’t a trustworthy source. When humans make mistakes, Ghani says, it’s easy for us to empathize (共鸣), since we recognize that people aren’t perfect beings. But we expect our machines to be correct. That makes it very hard for us to forgive AI when it gets things wrong. But empathy can be a powerful debugging tool: These are human-made systems, after all. AI has a water problem — really, an energy problem. A significant amount of heat is generated by the energy required to power the AI tools that people are increasingly using in their daily personal and professional lives. As Shaolei Ren, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is quick to note, cooling down the data centers requires an enormous amount of water, similar to the amount used by tens of thousands of city dwellers (居民). Ren believes it will be important for us as individuals and as a society to better understand the real cost of asking an application like ChatGPT a question. 12. Which of the following would Ghani probably agree with? A. AI applications serve as large language models. B. The prediction process of AI is simplified. C. Humans have tolerance for mistakes of AI. D. AI models attach greater importance to relevance than precision. 13. What is Ghani’s attitude towards AI? A. Cautious. B. Indifferent. C. Content. D. Biased. 14. What can we learn about AI from the last paragraph? A. AI tools are increasingly generating massive water in daily life. B. The amount of water consumed by AI is equal to that used by citizens. C. We are supposed to be aware of the environmental impact of AI. D. Individuals and society should reduce the cost of using AI. 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To give a brief account of AI. B. To illustrate big issues regarding AI. C. To honor two outstanding AI experts. D. To clarify the current situation of AI. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In the pursuit of personal and professional growth, plateaus (停滞期) are unavoidable. ___16___. Here are four strategies to overcome plateaus and achieve success. 1. Find Out the Root Cause When facing a plateau, there is likely something causing you to stop your progress. Identify the root cause. ___17___. Are you wasting time on unnecessary activities? Or are you taking on too many tasks? Often, adding more tasks overloads your already tight routine and distracts (使分心) you from focusing on the most important tasks. Therefore, often removing unnecessary activities will work to overcome plateaus. 2. ___18___ Once you’ve identified the root cause, never tolerate problems. Instead, address and improve the situation. Yet, people often find themselves asking, ‘What is wrong with it?’ Questions of this nature lead to responses like ‘Because you’re not good enough.’ Instead, ask ‘What is not perfect yet, and how can I turn things around?’ By asking empowering questions, you’ll shift your focus from the problem to the solution. 3. Track Your Habits Carry a notepad to track your habits throughout the day, especially those contributing to plateaus. For instance, if your root cause is too much internet use, record instances of mindless scrolling on social media. ___19___. Document what you’ve learned from the book and the time spent exercising. This practice helps you build new positive habits by enabling you to compare today’s results with those from yesterday or a week ago. 4. See Obstacles (障碍) as Opportunities ___20___. If your business receives a bad review from a customer, see it as free feedback that guides you on how to improve and take your business to the next level. Always try to see different angles that others may overlook. When you view a problem as an opportunity, it has the potential to boost growth. In the journey toward success, a plateau is not a full stop; it’s a comma that allows you to pause, reflect, and shift your mindset. So, keep moving, keep growing, and make your breakthrough. A. Never Take Your Eyes off Your Goal. B. Focus on a 100% Solution and 0% Problems. C. Examine your daily routine and how you spend your time. D. Every obstacle can be an opportunity to turn things around. E. The key to positive results lies in concentrating on the solution. F. But remember, plateaus are just temporary pauses, not dead ends. G. Additionally, track positive new habits, like reading and exercising. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 As I wrapped my arms around this woman of 81 years, I felt right at home. His latest deed, however, took him to a personal and professional high, as he started an extraordinary journey with his long-time friend, Emma Fogarty. Emma Fogarty, born with no skin on her left foot and right arm because of a rare genetic skin condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB) known as butterfly skin, has spent much of her life overcoming physical challenges and inspiring others with her firm determination. Her courage and positivity have earned her a circle of loyal friends, including Farrell, who has been by her side through thick and thin. When Farrell learned about a charity marathon in Dublin that aimed to raise funds and awareness for EB research, he immediately thought of Emma. The idea of running the marathon together seemed like a perfect way to support her fight and bring attention to her cause. At the thought of running the marathon while pushing Emma in wheelchair, Farrell knew this wasn’t going to be an ordinary race; it was a mission fueled by friendship, love, and a shared goal. Thus, Colin Farrell and Emma Fogarty’s journey to the Dublin Marathon had been filled with determination and challenges that tested their physical limits and mental resilience. As the marathon began, Farrell pushed Emma’ s wheelchair with his strength, feeling the weight of the journey but also the strength of their friendship. The crowd lined the streets, cheering loudly and waving flags. The atmosphere was electric, filled with a sense of unity and purpose. Kilometer by kilometer, Farrell pushed forward, passing landmarks, and with each step, Emma’ s courage and resilience fueled him, reminding him that he was not just running for himself, but for Emma and the countless others like her who battle EB every day. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Gradually, Farrell found it more challenging to push Emma’s wheelchair. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, they approached the last stretch of the marathon course. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力 1—5 ABACB 6—10 BCACB 11—15 ACBAB 16—20 ACBAC 2024—2025学年第一学期期末高三调研考试 英语试题 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? I’m writing to seek your guidance on my entry themed “My Favorite English Learning Website”. The English learning website I like most is “BBC Learning English”, which boasts a wide range of content, catering to various learning levels and interests. Additionally, it integrates cultural insights and global perspectives, providing learners with a deeper understanding of English-speaking cultures. However, I have no idea if my entry is well-structured. Given your rich experience, could you kindly review my draft in the attachment and provide your insights into how I can polish it? I am eagerly waiting for your valuable feedback. Best wishes! Yours, Li Hua 第二节 (满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】One possible version: Gradually, Farrell found it more challenging to push Emma’s wheelchair. The weight of the wheelchair, coupled with the increasing fatigue, made every step hardly possible. Farrell could feel the burn in his muscles and the sweat trickling down his face. He glanced down at Emma, who remained as resilient as ever, her eyes filled with gratitude and determination. The crowd, inspired by their perseverance, waved flags and shouted words of support. Witnessing all of these, Farrell felt a surge of renewed energy. He pushed the wheelchair with his remaining strength, determined to cross the finish line. Finally, they approached the final stretch of the marathon course. The cheers from the crowd became a chorus of encouragement. Seeing the finish line in sight, Farrell was overwhelmed with energy. Emma’s eyes lit up, her hands grasping her wheelchair tightly. Together, they surged forward, their hearts pounding wildly. As they crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted into applause. Their efforts were recognized not just as a victory in the marathon, but as a victory against adversity, a demonstration of lasting friendship and a powerful call for support for EB research. Farrell and Emma embraced the moment, knowing they had achieved something truly extraordinary. 听力 1—5 ABACB 6—10 BCACB 11—15 ACBAB 16—20 ACBAC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
