Volunteer Requirements Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older as of July 1 2025, to be eligible to volunteer with the 2025 Canada Games. Ages 16 to 18 years will be required to complete a parent/ guardian consent form during their application process. Those who commit a minimum of 32 hours during Games time from August 8-25, 2025 will receive comprehensive training. Volunteers must have a working knowledge of English. There are also a number of roles requiring volunteers to be conversational in both of Canada’s Official Languages (French and English). She thought that perhaps, having Eric’s unique measurements acknowledged with a record would, in turn, appeal to companies willing to produce shoes that would fit his unique measurements. With the help and encouragement of his mum and a family friend, Eric applied for his record titles when he was 14 years old. As Eric’s story gained attraction online, major companies like Puma and Under Armour stepped in. The companies offered him custom-made shoes and boots for free, bringing an unexpected but welcome change into his life. Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive (认知的) benefits that digital tools can’t bring. The advantages of writing by hand is that it involves a variety of senses in the writing process. “Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters and words is a complex cognitive-motor skill that requires a lot of our attention,” says Mellissa Prunty, a professor at Brunel University in London who has researched the relationship between handwriting and learning. “This deeper level of processing, which involves mapping sounds to letter formations, has been shown to support reading and spelling in children,” Prunty says. To better understand how our senses influence our cognition, Vander Meer and her co-worker looked at brain scans of 36 university students who performed writing tasks. The students were asked to write some words using pen and paper or typing them on a keyboard. Their brain activity during each task was captured through electronicephalogram (EEG) techniques. “The most surprising thing was that the whole brain was active when the students were writing by hand, while much smaller areas were active when they were typewriting,” Vander Meer says. “This suggests that when you are writing by hand you are using most of your brain to get the job done.” In Norway, many schools stopped teaching cursive writing, making pupils write and read on an iPad. Vander Meer hopes to change this trend through her research. “I think we should have at least a minimum of handwriting in primary school curricula simply because it is so good for the developing brain,” she says. 8.
