Short and shy,Ben Sanders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team."Football,
tennis,cricket-anything with a round ball,I was useless,"he says now with a laugh. But back then he
was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England's rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him.At first the teen went
biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend.Gradually,Sanders
set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18,he ran his
first marathon.
The following year,he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open
boat across the Atlantic Ocean.Sanders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's school of Adventure in
Scotland, where he learned about the older man's brave and exciting cold-water travels.Intrigued,
Sanders read all he could find about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, and then decided that
this would be his future.
Journeys to the Pole aren't the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people thought
of his dream as fantasy.John Ridgway was one of the few who didn't say,"You are completely crazy."
In 2001,after becoming a skilled skier,Sanders started his first long-distance expedition toward
the North Pole.He suffered frostbite, had a close encounter with a polar bear and pushed his body to the
limit.Sanders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he has skied
more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the
transformation.
This October,Sanders,27,heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to.the South Pole

In the Amazon rainforest of Venezuela,Yanomami hunter-gatherers exist on cassava, palm hearts
and wild bananas. They also hunt frogs and monkeys using techniques that would have been familiar to
their ancestors 11,000 years ago.The extraordinary continuity of their culture, and the fact that some of
the groups have had little contact with outsiders, led biologists to wonder whether the Yanomami might
reveal what the human digestive system looked like before industrialization supplied the world with
processed foods and antibiotics.
In 2023,researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine had a chance to find the answer in a
previously unknown Yanomami village.Health workers collected feces from about 30
villagers. When the researchers cultured and analyzed microbes (from the feces in their
laboratory, they discovered whole categories of bacteria that were absent from the guts ()of
people from industrialized countries.Even more strikingly, they found the microbial population in the
average Westerner to be about half as diverse as the community inside these hunter-gatherers.The
researchers realized that the microbes might have implications beyond basic science.People's
microbial communities are believed to play a role in disorders like obesity, diabetes and Alzheimer's,
which shorten lives and overburden health care systems. These disorders don't trouble these
preindustrial hunter-gatherers,however.Therefore,researchers want to learn which microbes protect

them and figure out how to reintroduce them in modern societies. It has the potential to affect health
more profoundly than the discovery of the fabled Fountain of Youth.
But the opportunity might be more fleeting than youth itself."The world is becoming urban so
fast."says microbiologist Maria Gloria,co-author of the study that reveals the Yanomami microbiome
(微生物群).“Our lifestyles are killing microbial diversity.”Although nobody has yet determined
exactly what the Yanomami mystery bugs are doing and how they improve an individual's health, she
believes that scientists need to collect and preserve as many microbes as possible for future
breakthroughs."We cannot afford to wait,"she says,"or we'll have lost the high diversity of the human
microbiome of traditional peoples before we understand how to use the microbiome to improve
health.”
28.What did the researchers find out in 2023?

D.By recording the Yanomami's daily life.
30.What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Para.3?
A.The opportunity seems more precious than youth.
B.The opportunity enables people to stay young forever.
C.The opportunity is of great significance to modern society.
D.The opportunity disappears so quickly that we cannot afford to miss it.
31.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.We are close to solving the mystery of Yanomami microbiome
B.Processed foods and antibiotics have changed human digestive system.
C.Treating diseases by introducing beneficial bacteria has been made possible.
D.The discovery of those microbes will help cure many life-threatening diseases.

In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources, the harm from the traditional
business model is on the rise.As a result of the fact that the past decade has seen more and more forests
disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm.People now realize that this unhealthy
situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable ways. That

means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words,we should keep
the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.
Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries:According to a recent study,
the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade.China,
for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the
global energy revolution,It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is
spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition,we are also
seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil ()which is
produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products
have grown by more than 50%.
Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets.First, they can set high targets
for reducing carbon emissions and targets for saving and reusing energy.Besides, stronger arrangement
of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can
avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those
expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.
The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within
the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable
product industries.
32.Why is the traditional business model harmful?
A.It brings damage to market.
B.It results in forest loss and global warming..
C.It consumes natural resources.
D.It usually focuses on high-carbon products.
33.To fully develop the low-carbon markets,governments can
A.cut public expenses
B.forbid carbon emission
C.develop public resources
D.encourage energy conservation
34.We can learn from the last paragraph that businesses have many chances to
A.develop sustainable products
B.explore new natural resources
C.make full use of natural resources
D.deal with the major challenge
35.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To compare two business models.
B.To introduce a new business model.
C.To advocate sustainable development.
D.To predict a change of the global markets.

The Diet Zone:A Dangerous Place
Diet Coke,diet Pepsi,diet pills,no-fat diet,vegetable diet...We are surrounded by the word"diet"
everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet
products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us.36
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level,we are not allowing our
brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the
consumption of fatty,high-calorie,unhealthy foods.Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking
stage and go straight for the scale (instead.37 On another level, diet products have greater
psychological effects.Every time we have a zero-calorie drink,we are telling ourselves without our
awareness that we don't have to work to get results.Diet products make people believe that gain comes
without pain and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
38 Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy
foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients ()Diet foods and diet
pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder
products.Diet products may not be nutritional.39 Now that we are aware of the effects that diet
products have on us,it is time to seriously think about buying them to reduce weight.40 Once
we realize this,we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the harm that
comes from using them.
A.It's believed that diet products contribute to losing weight.
B.Chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.
C.We all know the danger of diet products, but it's hard to resist them.
D.The danger of diet products lies also in the physical harm they cause.
E.We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.
F.Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals.
G.All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word"diet"in food labels.

Paragraph 1:
As he walked further down the street, he noticed a small alleyway that he hadn’t explored
yet. With a glimmer of hope, he made his way towards it. The alley was dim and cluttered with old
boxes and discarded furniture. Mr. Thompson carefully stepped over the remains, his eyes
scanning every corner. He called out the cat’s name softly, his voice echoing slightly in the limited
space. Suddenly, he saw a flash of movement near a pile of rubbish. His heart skipped a beat,
thinking it might be the cat. But as he got closer, he realized it was just a homeless dog, which
looked up at him briefly before running off. Disappointed, he continued his search, his worry
growing.
Paragraph 2:
Just when he was about to lose hope, he heard a faint meowing sound coming from a
2
cardboard box. His face lit up with relief and excitement. He rushed over to the box and found the
cat huddled inside, trembling. It seemed to have injured its paw, which was bleeding slightly. Mr.
Thompson gently picked up the cat and held it in his arms. He spoke comforting words to it as he
carried it back home. Once home, he carefully cleaned and bandaged the cat’s wound. From that
day on, their bond grew even stronger, and the old man made sure to keep a closer eye on his furry
friend, promising never to let it out of his sight for too long again.

W: Yes. Before I start selecting which colors to add to the photos, I look carefully at what’s in
them and then collect information about it.
M: And now you’ve published a book of historical photos.
W: Yes! A well-known historian saw my photos on social media and got in touch. We’ve worked
together a lot since then - that’s how the book got published. I was so happy when teachers said
the book got young students much more interested in history.
M: So what are your plans for the future?
W: I’d like to share my experiences, so I’ll organize presentations to local groups about my
fascination with old photos.

Hello everyone. I want to update you on our new school building! As you know, there have
been three main stages in the building project. Firstly, planning, and we welcomed advice from
you, parents and teachers. The next step, design, went on for more time than we predicted. But the
third stage, construction, has now finished ahead of schedule. So, let me give you more details.
You will notice how light the classrooms now are, thanks to larger windows, and how the sound is
much better too. Even when the corridors are full at break times, classrooms should still be quiet
with the doors closed. This was important, but not easy to achieve! The new facilities are all
completed. We received a generous donation from local businessmen, which allowed us to build
several music rooms and an art studio. They will be open for students after school. We wanted the
local community to be part of our school too. So anyone living in the area will be able to use the
sports center for a small charge. We want you all to find out where everything is in the new
building. So, we are putting together a display, showing where all the rooms are and what they
look like. Come and take a look!
