B In May 2022, when Rejcanne Fairhead was 95 years old, she finished the five-kilometre Ottawa Race for the old people aged 95 to 99 in 58 minutes and 52 seconds, a Canadian record. Taking part in the challenge--let alone breaking a record — wasn’t her goal; she didn’t do any training in advance. She was there simply because one of her friends joined in it. But it turned out that the 5K was a walk in the park for Fairhead, who treated it like any other walk around her neighbourhood. She stopped sometimes to talk with her friend. Fairhead credits her success and good health to her little habits, not any kind of special exercises or diet. Even before she had her eyes set on the Ottawa Race, Fairhead went for a walk nearly every day, She was an active volunteer. She often walked to and from a care home in her community. When the weather was nice, she would walk around the buildings in her neighbourhood. Fairhead once worked with someone who taught her some easy-to-do exercises. “They weren’t very difficult,” Fairhead says. One of the moves was simply sitting down in a chair and standing up again, over and over. This meant that she didn’t have to meet a trainer or go to the gym. She never spent much time on the exercise -just five minutes, every other day. Fairhead also says that she leads an active social life. She spends a lot of time talking with others on the phone. She often plays cards with a group of nearby women, or visits them for dinner. This is the key to keeping old people healthy, research shows. And research also shows that the activities help protect against diseases such as Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆) disease. Fairhead doesn’t see anything she does as amazing. Her active lifestyle helps her stay healthy with very little added effort. “People have stopped me and said I have inspired them to get out there and do something, no matter their age. I’m very proud of that,” She says. “Age is just a number.” 4 Why did Fairhead join in the Ottawa Race? A. To break a record. B. To run with her friend. C. To return to a healthy weight. D. To bring honor to her community. 5. What did Fairhead spend most of her time doing to stay healthy before the race? A. Walking in the community. B. Meeting a personal trainer. C. Volunteering in a gym. D. Practising sit-to-stand. 6. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Eating dinner. B. Playing brain games. C. Spending time with others. D. Using modern technologies. 7. What makes Fairhead feel proud? A. She became a role model. B. Her life was colourful. C. Her efforts were seen. D. She succeeded in staying healthy. C Young podcasters (播客), Stanley and Shaan Singh from Hull, have received funding from the Unity in Community Bursary (助学金) Fund to produce and promote their show, Reading with Stanley. Stanley and Shaan started their podcast to promote reading and encourage others to develop their reading habits. Every week, Stanley reads children’s books and shares inspirational quotes to help his audience build self-confidence. The bursary funds were used to set up the podcast and create promotional content. Vikki Singh, their mother, explained, “We had only called in to Unity in Community on Endike Lane to do some printing, but we came out with a successful application for their bursary fund. After discussing Reading with Stanley with the Unity team, they advised us to apply for the bursary, which can be used to support local people who are in training and developing projects.” Stanley and Shaan work well together, with Stanley reading the story and Shaan managing video production and editing. Vikki added, “They truly enjoy working on this project.” Unity also connected them with a local business that provided a free editing workshop during the half-term break. Sam Cawley from Blink Vide taught Shaan valuable editing techniques, which were a pleasant and unexpected benefit. Stanley noted the growing popularity of their podcast on social media, as more people listen to his stories. Authors worldwide have begun sending their books for him to include. “I’m a huge fan of Marcus Rashford,” Stanley said. “Besides reading children’s stories, I enjoy recording quotes from his book to inspire young people to achieve their goals.” The Unity Bursary Fund has been set up to support HU6 residents in training and education. Liam Woods, Project Manager at Unity, stated, “We are happy to support Reading with Stanley, which is the kind of local project the bursary is intended to support. Residents of HU6 needing funding for courses or projects can apply for our Bursary or Project funds. Awards can cover course costs, childcare, books, tools, or travel. Preference is given to those not working, without formal qualifications, or out of education for over five years.” With Unity’s support, Stanley and Shaan’s Reading with Stanley has received necessary backing and community connections, showing the value of local bursaries for young creative projects. 8. Why did Stanley and Shaan start their podcast? A. To sell local authors’ books. B. To show off their reading skills. C. To raise money for their own projects. D. To promote reading habits among others. 9. How did Unity in Community support Stanley and Shaan’s project? A. By providing free printing services. B. By helping them choose podcast topics. C. By introducing them to editing experts. D. By promoting their podcast on social media. 10. What does Liam Woods’ statement suggest about the Reading with Stanley project? A. It is among the most successful projects they’ve funded. B. It completely meets the aim of the bursary fund. C. It is the first podcast they’ve supported. D. It will receive long-term funding. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. The Educational Benefits of Reading with Stanley. B. Hull’s Community Bursary Funds New Podcast. C. A Local Business Offers Free Editing Workshops. D. New Community Centers Open in HU6. D Reviving old friendships is extremely beneficial. But according to a new study, we often hesitate (犹豫) to start those reconnections. The study surveyed almost 2,500 participants (参与者). Over 90% of the participants could think of a friend with whom they had lost touch and would like to speak again. However, even when participants expressed wanting to reconnect and were given time to write a message, only about 1/3 sent the message. The researchers tried to encourage connection by mentioning research showing messages from old friends are often well-received. But this did little to improve the situation — the number of participants who sent messages remained low. The researchers realized they needed to be creative. Their new strategy had one group of participants practice with a warm-up — spending three minutes writing messages to their current (现在的) friends, while another group spent three minutes looking through social media. Then, everyone was asked to send a message to an old friend. The practice task proved successful: 53% of those who “warmed up” sent the message. Only 31% of those in the social media group reached out to an old friend. Why is this such a problem that we need to warm up to deal with? Over time, old friends can start to feel like strangers, explains researcher Aknin. Our sense of distance and fear of awkwardness make us hesitate. Actually, people will appreciate it more than you expect. Peggy, a psychologist, found that we often underestimate (低估) how much other people appreciate us reaching out. When people move away, they meet different people and experience different things. That’s what makes running into someone you haven’t seen for a long time so interesting — you might hear about something new and cool. So if you are thinking about reaching out to an old friend, go for it. It’s worth doing. Hesitant? You could start with a warm-up similar to the one in the study. You’d be surprised by how excited people would be to reconnect. 12. What problem was found in most participants in the study? A. They lost some friends’ contact information. B. They were unwilling to revive old friendships. C They were not certain why to contact old friends. D. They failed to contact old friends when given a chance. 13. What measure did the researchers take that improved the participants’ behavior? A. Making them practice contacting friends. B. Showing them positive examples of reconnection. C. Letting them follow their friends on social media. D. Teaching them how to write messages to old friends. 14. How might people feel when being contacted by old friends? A. Annoyed. B. Thankful. C. Impatient. D. Shocked. 15. Why does the author write the last paragraph? A. To stress the value of friendships. B. To show the importance of the study. C. To call on people to contact old friends. D. To encourage people to learn from friends. Hey, wise investors (投资者)! Therefore, a dog was necessary. However, every dog we had found was either too excited, too lazy, or just didn’t listen. “Ashley, can you please find another dog for us by Monday?” asked Mr Loomis, our director and drama teacher. As the assistant (助理) stage manager, I took the job and strained my brain to find the right dog. It looked like an impossible task for it was already Saturday. However, I knew that this dog had to be perfect. It had to have a winning-personality, but it would also have to look the part. “I think I can help you get a dog,” offered José, our assistant director. Like me, he was in eighth grade. He loved the backstage world and being a problem solver. “Thanks. That’d be great,” I said. “I have no idea where to get the right dog.” José then texted his neighbor Mrs Karstaadt who ran the local shelter, and he thought she could help. She texted him right back, saying she knew the perfect dog. We walked to Mrs Karstaadt’s house. Once there, Mrs Karstaadt welcomed us warmly. “I have the perfect dog for you!” she said. “His name is Farley. He works part-time at the airport calming passengers who are nervous about flying. Let me get him. He’s out in the backyard playing.” She quickly stepped outside. I waited with José for a little while, and then she came back with a very happy dog. Farley had big and kind eyes. The dog’s fur was black and white in color. However, the main thing about Farley was that he lost one leg. Seeing the dog, I felt disappointed at first. But it also reminded me about myself. Despite my love for singing and dancing, the birthmark that covered half of my face would be too much of a distraction As a result, I chose to work backstage. Feeling our doubts, Mrs Karstaadt started talking. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mr Loomis called me into his office on Monday after school. and to my surprise, he excitedly praised the new dog. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 昆明行知中学2024年秋季学期12月学情调研试题卷(高一英语) (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. “Age is just a number.” 4. Why did Fairhead join in the Ottawa Race? A Eating dinner. B. Playing brain games. C. Spending time with others. D. Using modern technologies. 7. What makes Fairhead feel proud? A. She became a role model. B. Her life was colourful. C. Her efforts were seen. D. She succeeded in staying healthy. 4. B 5. A 6. C. They were not certain why to contact old friends. 12. D 13. A 14. B 15. The practice task proved successful: 53% of those who “warmed up” sent the message.(他们的新策略是让一组参与者先热身——花三分钟给他们现在的朋友写信息,而另一组花三分钟浏览社交媒体。 故选A。 根据第三段“Actually, people will appreciate it more than you expect. Peggy, a psychologist, found that we often underestimate (低估) how much other people appreciate us reaching out.(事实上,人们会比你想象的更感激你。 根据最后一段“When people move away, they meet different people and experience different things. You’d be surprised by how excited people would be to reconnect.(当人们离开时,他们会遇到不同的人,经历不同的事情。 Hey, wise investors (投资者)! However, even if you have a dream, without hard work, it will always be just a dream. ____17____ As Bodo Schaefer wrote in Kira and a Dog Named Money, “The things we are most proud of are often the hardest to do.” Kira and a Dog Named Money is a fairy tale, but it tells a lot about finance (财务) management. ____18____ To them, I’d say, “You’re wrong. You still have much to read and learn.” Read this book, and you’ll know that managing money can help people realize their dreams. ____19____ Confidence is important for success. “Without this confidence, you won’t start doing it, and if you don’t do it, nothing will happen,” Robert Kiyosaki wrote in Rich Dad Poor Dad. Finally, reading shows the meaning of life. People often lose sight of their purpose or even forget their dreams. ____20____ If you don’t know what life means to you, keep reading, and you will soon discover it. Isn’t reading the most worthwhile investment you’ve ever heard of? So what are you waiting for, wise investors? A. Reading can also build confidence. 以及后文“To them, I’d say, “You’re wrong. You still have much to read and learn.” Read this book, and you’ll know that managing money can help people realize their dreams. 【19题详解】 根据后文“Confidence is important for success. “Without this confidence, you won’t start doing it, and if you don’t do it, nothing will happen,” Robert Kiyosaki wrote in Rich Dad Poor Dad. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Feeling our doubts, Mrs Karstaadt started talking. “Farley may have lost a leg, but he has an incredible heart and a calming presence,” she explained. “He’s trained to handle stressful situations, which makes him perfect for a musical production. People often overlook abilities because of appearances, but Farley proves that true talent shines through.” Her words resonated with me. Here was a dog that, like me, had overcome adversity to find a purpose. Farley’s disability didn’t define him; his spirit did. Mr Loomis called me into his office on Monday after school, and to my surprise, he excitedly praised the dog. “Farley was a hit at rehearsals! His calm demeanor and responsiveness made him the star off-stage,” he enthused. “The actors felt more at ease, and the audience loved his presence. You did an outstanding job, Ashley. Farley is exactly what we needed.” His words filled me with pride and validation. It wasn’t just Farley’s ability that shone; it was also the understanding that true worth lies beyond appearances. Farley had found his place in the musical, just as I had found mine backstage. 词汇激活 行为类 ①忽视:overlook/ignore ②应对:handle/cope with ③共鸣:resonate/relate to 情绪类 ①困境:adversity/dilemma ②出色的:outstanding/excellent 【点睛】[高分句型1] He’s trained to handle stressful situations, which makes him perfect for a musical production.
