When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself: “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more active old age.
She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited (展览) in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it” she said.
24. What does Para 2 mainly talk about?
A. Moses and her children B. Moses and her childhood
C. An introduction to Moses’ life D. An introduction to Moses’ marriage
25. What did Grandma Moses spent most of her life doing?
A. embroidering B. painting C. nursing D. farming
26. The underlined word “portrayals ” in last paragraph means________.
A. directions B. descriptions C. surveys D. stages
27. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Grandma Moses and Her Pictures. B. Grandma Moses: A Woman Pioneer of 20th century
C. Grandma Moses and Her Exhibition. D. Grandma Moses:The Best Painter of 20th century
C
Scientists have recently discovered that animals that live in groups, such as elephants, foxes, and wolves, are more likely to follow rules. If they don’t, and each does its own thing, the group will probably break apart. Group members would be forced to live alone, and would have a harder time hunting and raising their young. That’s probably why a traveling wolf pack was seen stopping and waiting for its limping leader to catch up. Similar social ties are believed to be responsible for an elephant saving her friend from drowning.
Sometimes, though, animals try their best to do what’s right, even when there’s nothing in it for them. Nobody knows exactly why. “It might simply feel good to be kind, just as it does for humans.” says Bekoff. If your friend wasn’t nice to you, what would you do? Maybe you would just walk away. That’s exactly what a wild red fox did when she was playing boxing with another fox.
Toby was a generous cat. For ten years, the kind kitty shared his food with a spaniel named Katie. After supper, owner Linda Gustafson always divided the food. She’d drop some in Katie’s bowl on the floor and some in Toby’s dish on the kitchen counter. Gustafson kept the cat’s dish up high to keep Katie from stealing Toby’s treats. As it turned out, Katie didn’t need to steal; she only had to beg. Every night, the spaniel ate her food in a few seconds. Then she’d sit and stare at the cat and every night, Toby would be nice. Using his paw, he’d get several pieces of tasty food down to the waiting dog. Apparently, Katie appreciated it, because whenever she was curled up in her beanbag bed and the cat walked over, she would give up her nice, warm spot. “Toby would then lie down in the center of the beanbag.” says Gustafson, “and Katie would lie on the floor.”
28. The reason why some animals prefer to live in groups lies in that ________.
A. they have to follow natural rules B. they are afraid of staying alone
C. they cannot find food by themselves D. living alone would make their lives harder
29. According to Bekoff, animals try their best to do what’s right because ________.
A. it feels good to be kind B. animals are friendly by nature
C. they have learned to do so for a long time D. they want their owners to like them
30. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _________.
A Linda always lets the animals eat together B. Katie sometimes gets her food by stealing
C. Toby is generous but Katie isn’t D. Katie and Toby help each other
31. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. we should protect animals and live with them peacefully
B. animals, like humans, can be connected by friendly social ties.
C. rules only exist in human societies and not in animal societies
D. animals will make the world more beautiful and peaceful
D
Parents, do you ever wonder what’s going on in your children’ s minds? Teens, do you ever wish you could tell your parents how you feel about their parenting styles? And are your parents like everyone else’s? One East Valley teacher is helping bridge this gap (隔阂) with a unique survey.
Scott Reed, a psychology teacher from Hamilton High School in Chandler, AriZona, says, no doubt, it is very different being a teenager today than it was when their parents were teens.
Social media (媒体) has played a big role in that change. “I think social media puts a lot of stress on us,” said Vedant Thareja, a senior at Hamilton High School. He added that he had female friends who felt stressed to look a certain way, because of pictures of famous people they saw on social media, and were disappointed (失望的) when they could not achieve that look. Lexi Lamond, a 16-year-old Hamilton High School student agreed. “Everybody is comparing themselves to everyone these days,” said Lamond.
Both students are part of Reeds class and took part in a survey of parenting styles. The survey showed teenagers felt their parents were often wanting them to compete with another teen who is doing better than them, or a brother or sister who outshines them. Teens also showed that they wanted their parents to stop trying to solve all their problems. Sometimes they just needed space to talk and deal with things themselves. Teens said they felt their parents were trying too hard to place themselves in every part of their lives.
One point that mom and educational expert Katey McPherson found insightful (有见地) was that teens said they could not meet their parents’ expectations to “be perfect” all the time.
Reed’s survey offered great insight into the mind of a teen and the role they wanted to see parents playing in their lives. Mental (心理的) health experts suggest parents teach their children the skills of solving problems, getting along with others in a healthy way, and ways to manage stress so they would be prepared to deal with any disappointment and failure that could come their way as they grew into young adults.
32. What is Reed trying to do with the survey?
A. Find the problems teens have with learning.
B. Collect questions raised by worried parents.
C. Improve communication between parents and teens.
D. Show the differences between present and past teens.
33. What has been changed for some teens under the influence of social media?
A. They have less time for study. B. They have fewer real-life friends.
C. They like to post more pictures. D. They care more about appearance.
34. What do teens think of their parents according to Reed’s survey?
A. They are impatient. B. They are talkative.
C. They expect too much. D. They work too hard.
35. What do mental health experts advise parents to do for their teens?
A. Act as role models for them. B. Help them develop life skills.
C. Find ways to improve their study. D. Encourage them to learn from failures.

The Sumerians also wrote down business contracts (合同). That’s because a contract explains what both sides promise to do. Written contracts helped the Sumerians run better businesses. This helped their civilization to grow.
____38____ It was an epic poem (史诗) called The Epic of Gilgamesh. The work is about more than just two friends on an adventure. It is also about life and death, happiness and sadness. It’s full of big ideas about the world. When the Sumerians wrote these ideas down, they spread. As a result, the Sumerians could study and talk about these big ideas. ____39____ Writing helped the Sumerians become great thinkers.
As you have read writing helped the Sumerians become a great civilization. ____40____ That is why writing is the most important invention in human history.
A. They could also improve these ideas.
B. Writing continues to improve our lives today.
C. They used writing to make their government work better.
D. The Sumerians also created the world’s first written story.

Eating a healthy diet is far from simple because we actually make the majority of our food choices ___56___ (base) on our preference. Many people don’t even know how great it feels to eat a healthy meal because they ___57___(make) bad food choices for too long.
To really understand the importance of forming healthy eating habits, you need to ask___58___ (you) a question. Why do humans need to eat? “The basic need for food could be compared to ___59___ (put) gas in your car. If you put the right fuel into your car, it will spring to life with a single turn of the key and run smoothly for a long time, but if you put soda pop and sugar in your gas tank, it’s going to ruin your car. In this sense, your car and your body are alike. They can both run well ___60___ the right kind of fuel but deteriorate (变坏) over time if you ignore their basic ___61___ (need) of fuel.
If you ignore healthy eating habits, you not only face ___62___ possible future of being over-weight but also run the risk of depression heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and so on. The choices you make each day, from what to eat for breakfast to whether or not to have an extra piece of pie, influence how you feel and perform, ___63___ makes a difference to everything you do. Once you believe eating ___64___ (health) is necessary, it’s time to make some changes to your diet. Instead of cutting out all the “bad” foods you currently eat, it’s much easier and safer ____65____(start) by adding more healthy foods to your diet gradually, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and nuts.
One day in summer vacation, I was in the chemist’s shop with my son who is fifteen years old. My son is talkative and his dream is becoming a famous speaker. So he loves engaging with strangers in public if they are friendly and safe. That day he said “Hi” to a kid and began a pleasant conversation. The kid called Jack was wearing the uniform of the senior high school my son would attend next month so I pointed that out to my son. When we were leaving. Jack said, “See you at school.”
On the first day of school, Jack, who was in Senior Two, greeted my son at the school gate. They soon became good friends. When I went to pick up my son after school, they walked out side by side. Jack’s mother stopped her car, too. However, as I was packing my car with groceries, I found my son’s new uniforms were missing and we felt extremely anxious. Seeing the scene like this, Jack’s mother constantly comforted us. She drove up behind me and promised to offer me a bag of uniforms that no longer fitted her son. She gave me those clothes for nothing! I was overjoyed and I went and picked them up from her the next afternoon.
This may seem like a small kindness to some people but for me it is huge! I have been stressing quite a lot about the cost of uniforms for school. We are attempting to start a business with no capital and have financial difficulties at the moment. I also suffer from severe depression and anxiety and have had the really worst year in my life. I cannot even begin to explain how much I appreciate this small gesture from a complete stranger. It has relieved a bit of a burden from my shoulders. You never know when the small kindnesses, even simply a smile on the street, can be incredibly uplifting to a complete stranger
I asked Jack’s mother for her contact information, and in the following days we kept in touch, and gradually we became good friends, too.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

M: Dear everyone, can I really be so far away and still feel at home? It has been less than a month since I started at the Frances King School and I already feel that I belong to London. Like many of the students here, I am living with a local family, which certainly helps me to practice my English away from class. The school believes that learning should continue outside classes and those students should have the chance to experience British culture.
Last week we all went to see a musical and this weekend we are going to visit Stratford for the day. We have also been promised a weekend in Paris next spring! Of course, I’m working hard as well as having fun. With class sizes of less than fifteen there is no chance of being able to avoid the teachers. As well as learning English we are also taught how to study by ourselves. That should make it easier when I get to university. For such a friendly place, the Frances King School is very large. Students come from all over the world to learn here, from Europe and South America as well as China. We’ll all find it a great place to learn.

根据第二段“She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.(她出生在纽约州的一个农场,这个家里有五个男孩和五个女孩。

Scientists have recently discovered that animals that live in groups such as elephants, foxes, and wolves, are more likely to follow rules.
A. Linda always lets the animals eat together B.
D 29. A 30. D 31. B

根据第二段中““It might simply feel good to be kind, just as it does for humans.” says Bekoff.(“善良可能只是感觉很好,人类也是一样。”Bekoff说)”可知,根据Bekoff的说法,动物们尽最大努力去做正确的事情,因为善良的感觉很好。故选A。

One point that mom and educational expert Katey McPherson found insightful (有见地的) was that teens said they could not meet their parents’ expectations to “be perfect” all the time.
A Find the problems teens have with learning.

I believe that writing is the most important invention in history. It is the most important for two reasons. First, it helped governments and businesses work better. Second, it helped ideas to spread.
Writing was invented by the Sumerians around 5,000 years ago. ____36____ One example is The Code of Hammurabi. It was a list of laws written on a huge stone block for all to see. The law was written down, so every person knew what the law was. They knew what would happen if they broke it.
The Sumerians also wrote down rules about their government. The rules described how the government should work. ____37____ The rule said that the worker would have to pay a fine. This made the government act more responsibly.
As you have read, writing helped the Sumerians become a great civilization. ____40____ That is why writing is the most important invention in human history.
A. They could also improve these ideas.
B. Writing continues to improve our lives today.
C. They used writing to make their government work better.

故填based。
故填have been making /have made。
故填with。
故填a。
故填which。
故填to start。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Years later, as Jack was graduating, his mother invited us to her home in return.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I decided to invite Jack and his mother to dinner at home, hoping to thank her for her timely help. Before dinner, Jack and his mother came with a pot of flowers. During the meal, we talked about our families and work. We were very happy. I also expressed my gratitude for her help. The two children talked happily about their studies and hobbies, and giggled from time to time. Happy time always passes quickly. When they went back, my son and I were reluctant to part.
Years later, as Jack was graduating, his mother invited us to her home in return. I took my son and a pot of flowers, as she did years ago. After dinner, we talked as usual. However, through this chat, I learned that Jack’s mother had depression and anxiety before. She was very grateful for my company during these years, which had greatly improved her situation. In fact, what she didn’t know was that it was with her company that I came out of a difficult year. I reached out and hugged her. We both said “thank you” to each other.
