After a long journey, I finally got to the hospital. Lying on the examination table while facing the painfully bright ceiling lights, I fidgeted, desperately trying to ignore the upsetting part of the situation. I attempted to focus on staying warm in the cold room, but what happened days ago kept running through my head — the intense pain, the overpowering fear, and the panicky steps in the Emergency Room. I was told I had broken a backbone. I now smiled recalling the innocence of my response: “Do I have to wear a support when I play football? ”
I had waited for three months to find out whether I could play football again but the thought of waiting another five minutes seemed impossible. Then Dr. Pittinger entered. He was friendly, but noticeably uncomfortable, almost sad. He told me that I would never be able to play football again.
The realization sank in immediately. I wasn’t surprised, or at least I shouldn’t have been, but that didn’t make the order any easier. I refused to accept the idea, and for months I continued to exercise. I worked out from five to six every morning. Though I was ashamed to wear the support, I wore it devotedly, with some false hope that the more I wore it, the quicker and better it would heal the backbone.
I was determined to play again.
The fact is that, just as the doctor ordered, I never played another quarter of football. After nights of coming home from exercising, barely able to walk, I finally gave in. For a while, giving up felt like an admitting of defeat rather than the acceptance of a truth that should have been painfully obvious, but over time, I realized like most difficult decisions I have made and will have to make, life would go on. Rather than stick to the undeniably unattainable, I understood though this particular option was no longer open to me, I had countless others to make in its place.
And by the way, I’m a five-star football coach now.
24. The word “fidgeted” in paragraph 1 most probably means “________”.
A. felt terribly bored. B. lay quietly and calmly.
C. was extremely grateful. D. made slight, anxious movements.
25. The underlined sentence in paragraph 2 indicates the writer’s ________.
A. slow but steady recovery. B. eagerness to get the doctor’s answer.
C. frequent visits to the hospital. D. emotional change after the accident.
26. What did the writer give up in the end?
A. Trusting the doctor. B. Exercising in the gym.
C. Focusing on the impossible. D. Putting everything in place.
27. What’s the message mainly conveyed in the passage?
A. Ignoring failures is the key to a fulfilling life.
B. There are two ways for everyone to live his life.
C. Some people in the world live with physical pain.
D. We should accept life as it is and live to the fullest.
C
Sharks and their relatives are some of the most threatened vertebrates (脊椎动物) on Earth. Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) provide homes for countless fish species that are vital for fisheries and are therefore an especially important ecosystem for humans - and one where the decline of shark populations seems to be especially serious.
The study by Simpfendorfer with his team is the result of a worldwide cooperation called the Global FinPrint project. The data analyzed include more than 20,000 hours of standardized underwater video taken at nearly 400 reefs in 67 countries around the world. It reveals declines of 60 to 73% of once-abundant coral reef shark species at reefs around the world.
However, the findings of Simpfendorfer with his team include signs of hope and a clear path forward. Their results show that although shark populations in many reefs had declined, some healthy reef shark populations remained. The reefs with healthier shark populations had some important similarities: they tended to be in the waters of high-income countries with stronger natural resource management regulations. A country that lacks the resources to feed its people is less able to sustainably manage and protect its biodiversity.
The most unexpected result of the study is that a decline or complete loss of shark species in one reef was not always associated with similar changes in nearby reefs. They found that one reef can be overly fished so badly that a once-common reef shark species is totally gone, but another reef a short distance away can have healthy populations of that same species. It is likely that healthy populations can eventually help repopulate nearby areas
The problem is clear - animals that provide ecosystem services that are vital for human food security and livelihoods are disappearing at an alarming rate. The loss of sharks and the ecosystem services they provide represents an ecological disaster that can cause substantial harm to humans. But apparently, the findings have shown a way. If the threat that led to population decline are resolved, then these important and threatened animals may recover.
28. Why is Simpfendorfer with his team mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress the result of global cooperation.
B. To state the urgency of protecting the earth.
C. To show the severe conditions of certain sharks.
D. To present the figures of their contributions to sharks.
29. Simpfendorfer’s research found that healthy reef shark populations remained because of .
A. strict laws in rich countries
B. developed countries
C. similarities between other waters
D. public awareness of protecting reefs
30. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Changes in reefs lead to loss of shark species.
B. Humans and animals depend on each other in ecosystem.
C. It’s not clear whether humans cause damage to biodiversity.
D. The declined shark species have nothing to do with overfishing.
31. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Sharp decline of coral reefs.
B. Potential recovery of reef sharks.
C. Global cooperation of saving sharks.
D. Amazing discovery of coral reefs.
D
You probably know that sunshine affects your mental and physical health. New research shows it may also affect your appetite-but only if you’re male.
That finding surprised Carmit Levy, who had been studying how ultraviolet-B (UV-B) rays affect the skin of mice. The sun’s UV-B rays are the main cause of sunburns and skin changes that can lead to cancer. Levy exposed mice to these rays for a few weeks. The dose was so weak that it didn’t cause any redness. But Levy noticed changes in the animals’ fa t tissue. Part of the mice also became heavier.
Levy ordered new mice to look into these unexpected changes. The new group included a mix of males and females. She found that UV-B exposure enhanced the appetite of male mice — but not females’. The males also worked harder to get at food that was difficult to reach. Something was really motivating them to eat more.
She wondered whether sunlight might have a similar effect on people. To find it out, she gathered volunteers for two studies. Both suggested that men and women may respond differently to UV-B. But the number of volunteers in these tests was too small to be persuasive.
Fortunately, Levy’s colleague Andrews had access to data from almost 3,000 people. They’d all participated in Israel’s first nutrition survey, some 20 years before. These data showed that 1,330 of the surveyed men consumed more food in summer months. From March to September, they tended to down about 2,188 daily calories. They averaged only about 1, 875 calories from October to February. The 1,661 women in this study consumed about 1,500 calories per day all year long.
Longer days in summer give males of many species more time to hunt and provide for their families. Consuming more food would give them the energy to do just that. In human evolution, UV-B might have motivated our male ancestors to hunt more to help their community survive.
32. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A textbook on biology. B. An abstract of a food journal.
C A review of medical research. D. An essay from the science website.
33. What happened to the mice after weeks’ exposure to UV-B rays?
A. Their fat tissue decreased. B. Some of them gained weight.
C. Their skin became reddened. D. Some of them developed cancer.
34. What did Levy do when she found her studies weren’t convincing enough?
A. She gathered more volunteers. B. She set out to conduct more tests.
C. She invited more scientists to join her. D. She turned to some previous research data.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Advantages of males of many species over females.
B. Reasons why males of many species prefer summer.
C. Benefits of UV-B exposure to males of many species.
D. Effects of sunlight on the health of males of many species.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is there a link between social media and depression? Do social media have a negative impact on your mental health? It’s complicated.
In a recent study, the investigators compared social media use and depression between teens.
___36___Specifically, for every hour per day that one teen spent on social media more than her peers, she likely had a 0.64 point higher depression score.
A different study published in 2018 identified five distinct types of social media users. The finding was that "problematic social media use" was one of the main themes for people whose mental health was affected by social media. You can have alcohol in your life without it being a problem, or your alcohol use may become problematic. ___37___
There's one important thing to remember about survey research just because two things happen together, it's not necessarily true that one causes the other. ___38___For all we know, it could be that people who are already more depressed choose to spend more time on social media.
___39___If you think that we shouldn't paint social media with one broad brush, you're on the right track. On the one hand, participants often described social media as a valuable way to cope with stress. On the other hand, cyberbullying via social media was also a common experience for participants. Some also said that constantly checking their own social media profile was stressful.
It’s certainly possible that experiences like cyberbullying, comparing yourself to idealized images, and constantly monitoring your profile, are bad for your mood. It's also true for many that social media offer community support and positive messages. Given the inconclusive research, it's safe to say that at least we shouldn't write off social media altogether. ___40___Anyway, you cannot use it as a crutch for coping with other stressors and mental health problems.
A. It's the same with social media.
B. Social media can be a double-edged sword.
C. People get more opinionated about the potential problems of social media.
D. They found that those who used social media more had higher depression scores.
E. They reviewed all existing research and found that there were both benefits and drawbacks.
F. The key to benefiting from social media may lie in using it in moderation and staying socially connected.
G. For example, just because higher social media use co-occurs with higher levels of depression doesn't mean social media use causes depression.

“We’ve got this,” my friend Alex laughed loudly as we stepped off the library steps. “Absolutely, we’ve got this,” I agreed, performing a little victory dance on the sidewalk once the library door had closed behind us. We had both been nominated (提名) for the Youth Excellence Program, an honor and a chance almost every student was crazy about.
That weekend, Alex and I sat in my living room, carefully completing the program application. We each aimed to show we had all qualities the program valued: academic excellence, leadership, community service, integrity, and civic responsibility. I detailed my devotion to challenging courses, while Alex described his volunteer work at the local food bank. We left no stone unturned, fully confident in our joint success.
The following day, we submitted our applications to the teacher hopefully.
Weeks passed.
Then one day, I received a letter about the project. I rushed out of the classroom and opened it. I felt a stab of sadness right in my heart: my name was not on the list.
At that very moment, I saw Alex came jogging over, waving his letter with a beaming smile. It was clear he had news that contrasted with my own. Without hesitation, I turned away to avoid him. I knew he was eager to share his joy. Perhaps, he even had planned to celebrate the good news together with me.
But I just couldn’t face it: they picked him but refused me. How could fate be so unjust? Anger and despair just blinded me.
That afternoon, on the school bus, I sat alone and avoided eye contact with Alex. When the bus arrived at my street, I just jumped off, without saying goodbye or smiling to him. I hurried home, thrusting (塞) the letter into my mom’s hands. I buried my face in the cushions, sobbing uncontrollably as waves of heartache swept over me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex.

From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex. Each day at school, I navigated the hallways with a new route, avoiding the places he frequented. The shared excitement that once connected us was replaced by a painful silence. Alex tried to do something to mend it. One day, he even left me a note, trying to comfort me. But I looked at him coldly, “Leave me alone.” I knew I was hurting him, but the sting of rejection was too fresh, and I couldn’t find the words to bridge the gap.
Finally, Mom talked with me, saying Alex wasn’t the one to blame. She reminded me that success and failure were parts of life’s journey. “You should have congratulated your friend on this instead of feeling pitiful for yourself,” she said seriously. It suddenly struck me that how unfairly I treated Alex. Seized by guilt, I followed mom’s advice and left Alex a note, expressing my feelings—not as an apology, but as a step towards healing and rebuilding our bond. It was time to face my fears and embrace the reality that our friendship could weather this storm.
