The Road to Destruction
We know that cars are bad for us.But we all make excuses:“The buses are terrible”;“The trains are always late”;“I haven't got time to walk”.I'm talking about myself, too. To be frank,I'm addicted① to my car. When I asked a friend working for a greenliving organisation for advice about how to give up,she told me five things:
·Use your legs.In 2014,over 55% of car journeys were under eight kilometres.Instead of taking short car journeys,we could easily walk or cycle.Leg power can save your money, keep you fit and help you live longer.Regular exercise also cuts the risk② of heart disease by 50%!
·Use public transport.Up to 90 people can travel in one bus, while the same number will need at least 18 cars.Sometimes it can take a little bit longer, but so what? You can relax, read a book, talk to someone—who knows?
·Think before you go.Do you really have to go to that shopping centre on the other side of town? What about the shops around the corner? Before you get into your car, think about whether you really need to make that journey.
·Share cars.If you really have to use a car, share journeys with someone else.It is much cheaper and kinder to the environment.
·Take action! We often think there is nothing we can do about the noise, pollution and danger of traffic. There is.If your street is full of heavy traffic, talk to your neighbours about it.Write to the papers.Go to the city government.Ask for a speed limit③.Do whichever of these things that suit you.Don't just sit around and complain④!
All quite simple, isn't it?Five easy ways to improve our environment.Well,I'm sorry I have to finish this article, but I've got to pick up my daughter from school at 4 pm.Then I've got to drive to the supermarket to do the shopping. After that,I have to take my son to a party. The traffic is going to be horrible⑤,but what can I do?

Oh no.Coach Cafferty just said my name. For that event. The twohundredmeter breaststroke(蛙泳) for the coming meet! Not the backstroke I had desired and practised for so long!Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip.Morgan pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer me moral support. But it didn't help.My stomach sank to my knees like a brick in water.Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine.“Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think.”“Or maybe Coach Cafferty just wants to give the rest a laugh when I sink to the bottom of the pool,”I thought desperately.I walked towards Coach Cafferty and told her about my inability and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if it was what I really wanted.I hesitated.Placing her hand on my shoulder, she started smiling and encouraged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
The first practice was a disaster.I lost rhythm on my strokes.I messed up my turns.I even had to stop and catch my breath a few times.I felt everyone was laughing at me and my stomach twisted. How could I make it within just two weeks? But once I dragged

myself out of the water, exhausted and frustrated,Coach Cafferty gave me the thumbsup, saying I did really well and just needed more confidence in myself and more time to practise. On the way back home,Morgan comforted me,“Dear, just ignore others.Race against yourself.Count your own strokes.Prove to yourself that you can do it.”With these words said to me almost every day, before or after each practice, something gradually changed:both how I swam breaststroke and how I felt about the event as well as myself.
The meet finally came.I arrived at the pool, still a little bit worried. As each event clicked closer to mine,my knees shook.I bit my lip and looked out over other swimmers.Morgan leaned forward,“Just swim your race.Remember, you can!”

[参考范文]
Then the twohundredmeter breaststroke was announced.Nerves choked my throat as I dragged myself to the starting block. At the poolside was Coach Cafferty, looking at me with a big thumbsup. The whistle blew and I plunged into the water. For the first lap,my breath was a little shaky, but Morgan's words popped into my head. So,counting my own strokes and swimming my own race(as Morgan had told me),quickly,I found my rhythm.
There was only 50 meters to go.My arms were burning and my lungs were screaming for air.The scene where Coach Cafferty gave me a big thumbsup cheered me up in an instant.Ignoring the exhaustion,I went on my swimming. As I finally touched the wall, there was no one else in the pool.I came last in the race. When I pulled myself out of the water,Morgan hugged me tightly, crying,“You did it!”Coach Cafferty came over and said,“I'm proud of you.”“But...I lost,”I said, lowering my head.Coach Cafferty smiled, saying,“You swam your race.I think you won.”I would remember her words for a lifelong time.At that moment,I felt truly grateful to Morgan, and to Coach Cafferty.
