A
Remarkable wildlife experiences around the world
For nearly a century, people around the globe have celebrated World Animal Day. Launched in 1925, the annual event on 4 October is designed to raise awareness of animal rights issues and help improve the treatment and well-being of wildlife. Today, the international effort includes more than 90 ambassadors in 70 countries, and in recent decades, travel has increasingly played a key role in wildlife conservation. From whale- watching in Mexico to lemur-spotting in Malaysia, here are some of the most remarkable wildlife experiences around the globe where rule-abiding travellers are welcome.
Laguna San Ignacio, Mexico
In El Vizcaino, a protected whale area in Mexico’s Baja California Sur peninsula, grey whales are known to regularly and voluntarily approach fishing boats out of sheer curiosity, sparking new whale-watching tours where the whales are the ones doing the viewing. These unique interactions are helping to fuel their habitat conservation.
Okavango Delta, Botswana
For many years, the paddling and steering of traditional mokoros(独木舟) used to take visitors to view wildlife in the Okavango Delta were strictly the territory of men. However, recently a number of female mokoro guides(called “polers”) have started to take up the tradition, leading visitors in search of the elephants, zebras and buffalo. This change is part of a larger trend across the continent to empower women to participate in eco-friendly tourism.
Pantanal, Brazil
The Pantanal stretches more than 140,000 km² across Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay and is considered the largest wetland on Earth. The northern corner of the Brazilian Pantanal is home to one of the world’s most unique tours. Here, travellers jump on Pantaneiro horses as they navigate the wetland, allowing them to keep their eyes on jaguars, giant anteaters, giant otters, tapir, maned wolves and hundreds of bird species.
Langkawi, Malaysia
Though closely related to monkeys, the so-called “flying lemur(狐猴)” is actually a unique species found only in forests across South-East Asia. Despite being fairly widespread, very little is known about the large-eyed gliding creature. Nature-focused tours like Jungle Walla offer the best opportunities to see them in the wild.
21.In which destination can women engage in guiding for visitors?
A.Pantanal, Brazil. B.Langkawi, Malaysia.
C.Okavango Delta, Botswana. D.Laguna San Ignacio, Mexico.
22.What do the Pantanal, Brazil and Langkawi, Malaysia have in common?
A.Both the habitats cover a huge area of wetland in the wild.
B.Visitors can have the opportunity to see breathtaking scenery.
C.Visitors have the opportunity to closely interact with wild animals.
D.Both the wild experiences offer nature-focused tourism opportunities.
23.Which column of a magazine does the text belong to?
A.Green Living. B.Natural Wonders.
C.Climate Change. D.Adventure and Wildlife.

Virginia Hislop receives a master’s degree in the 2024 diploma ceremony at the age of 105. When she started at the GSE in 1936 — then the Stanford University School of Education — her plan was to get her bachelor’s of education, which she did in 1940, and obtain her master’s of education so she could teach, which she started directly after.
However, just after completing her coursework and just before turning in her final thesis, her then-boyfriend George Hislop, a GSE student in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), got called in to serve during World War II, prompting the pair to get married and Virginia Hislop to leave campus before graduating.
Now, 83 years after leaving campus and living in service to learning, Hislop returned to Stanford to finish what she started and receive her graduate degree. Looking back on her career, Hislop credits her time at Stanford and the things she’ s learned from community partners along the way for her ability to impact students. “I think I did good things for our local school system and I helped broaden it out,” she said. “For me, this degree is an appreciation of the many years I’ve put in working for the schools in the Yakima area and on different boards.”
At the Diploma ceremony, GSE Dean Daniel Schwartz concurred, saying Hislop “led a life of tremendous educational accomplishment.” Her fellow graduates and their families gave her a standing ovation. When Hislop rose from her seat, dressed in cap and gown, to walk across the stage and receive her master’s hood (兜帽), the applause roared once again. She greeted Schwartz on stage and was handed her diploma. She smiled for the cameras. Her grandkids and great- grandkids waved and cheered. “My goodness,” Hislop said. “I’ve waited a long time for this.”

25.Why did Virginia Hislop decide to return to Stanford?
A.She was inspired by her family. B.She needed her master’s of education to teach.
C.She benefited from it as a teacher. D.She wanted to achieve her original learning goals.
26.What does the underlined word “ovation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Welcome. B.Salute. C.Applause. D.Farewell.
27.Which of the following can best summarize the text?

There have been many problems with our schools today, the biggest of which is closely related to our culture. In general, our culture, as represented in the media, gets excited by famous stars, and constantly stresses that it’s what you have, not what you are, that counts. Parents are encouraged to be away from even very small children for most of the day. Too many voters go for politicians who would rather cut school funding than to get rid of tax cuts for the wealthy. All contribute greatly to the problems of educating our children.
Today’s teachers have to deal with a culture that is vastly different than in the past. They report that there is, among more children than ever, a lack of motivation, no drive to succeed or even try. The role models that boys view in the media mostly consist of men in comedies and other shows who are rude and often extremely immature; self-centered overpaid athletes; men in movies, television dramas, video games, etc. who are preoccupied with violence and power. As Leonard Sax wrote in Boys Adrift, “Teenage boys are looking for models of mature adulthood, but we no longer make any collective effort to provide such models.” Girls are attacked not only with such annoying images of males, but also with women who are preoccupied with appearance and are extremely materialistic.
In such a cultural environment, it is more important than ever to have responsible, loving and caring parents who have enough time and motivation to devote to their children and see to it as their duty to model for them and raise them with high standards of honesty and responsibility along with tending to their physical needs. They need to care enough to see that their children are not attacked with the garbage that comes from movie, television and computer screens. In today’s culture, they are basically alone in this effort since, unfortunately, so much is working against them.
Until we, as a culture, face the truth about ourselves — that we are not providing adequately for a great many of our children — the storm will continue to sweep over our education system.
28.How is paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A.By analyzing causes. B.By showing differences.
C.By describing a process. D.By using time order.
29.What does today’s culture probably bring to the children?
A.Narrow access to entertainment. B.Little desire for success.
C.Few materialistic models. D.Poor understanding abilities.
30.According to the text, in today’s culture parents need to _________.
A.devote more to their children B.find honest models for their children
C.keep their children away from computers D.help their children develop motivation
31.What is the author’s attitude towards today’s culture?
A.Positive. B.Dissatisfied. C.Uncertain. D.Approving
D
Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.
32.What did the new study aim to explore?
A.When exercise is best for learning. B.What biochemicals are good for health.
C.How brainwaves should be measured. D.Which area of the brain is the most active.
33.What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment?
A.Train on bicycles. B.Do mathematics exercises.
C.Play computer games. D.Watch films about nature.
34.Why did the participants return to the lab two days later?
A.To do a medical examination. B.To have their memory tested.
C.To get their workouts recorded. D.To finish their previous tasks.
35.What might the author’s marathon running prove?
A.The findings of the study are reliable. B.Long-distance runners are often smart.
C.Studies on the marathon are not enough. D.Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.

Keep your response under two minutes and make it interesting to differentiate you from the other candidates.

You're likely to meet many people and answer some variation on the “tell me about yourself" question numerous times. 39 Share your name and your role at the organization, and past information, if relevant. If you want to take the focus off yourself, ask the person about their role. 40

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel (吵架) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles? ”
“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me. ” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it? ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness! ” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger! ”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her? ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me? ”
On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

W: That’s the second ticket I’ve gotten this month. If I get more than one ticket, my insurance company will raise my insurance. That is terrible.
M: Don’t worry. Parking tickets don’t count.
W: I’m glad to hear that. The ticket will be expensive though.
M: If the police officer made a mistake you should challenge the ticket. You can explain to the judge that the police officer made a mistake. The judge can throw out the ticket.
W: You’re right.

W: Sleep is of the dead. Sleep is a criminal waste of time. That's not me talking. That's two famous people, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison. But tonight, we have an equally well-known person, who disagrees with such ideas. He is Russell Foster. He is one of this country's living scientists in sleep studies and the freethinking lecturer of the year. Russell is a man who thinks deeply and sleeps deeply, and he wants us to stop seeing sleep as an inconvenience, something to be gotten through, a man who wants us to take sleep as the most important behavioral experience that we have. Russell has been doing this research for decades at the University of Virginia, Chicago and now at Oxford. But his work also takes him beyond the lab. Through videos and popular books, Russell has become a public speaker for sleep. And tonight's lecture is about his research. Please welcome Russell Foster.

A
Remarkable wildlife experiences around the world
For nearly a century, people around the globe have celebrated World Animal Day.

D.Approving

【答案】32.A 33.D 34.B 35.D

You're likely to meet many people and answer some variation on the “tell me about yourself" question numerous times. 39 Share your name and your role at the organization, and past information, if relevant. If you want to take the focus off yourself, ask the person about their role. 40
A.Again, keep it simple and professional.
B.If it hasn't happened yet, it will eventually.
C.What should you do if you are asked the question?
D.Who do you think is most likely to ask this question?
E.It's a good opportunity to learn more about your new workmates.
F.It tests the candidate's confidence and sets the tone for the conversation.
G.Whatever you do, don't turn around and ask the person the same exact question.

56.that 57.heard 58.which 59.symbols 60.original 61.a 62.were invited 63.It 64.getting 65.of
so…that...
故填which。
“as a result of…”

Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she pushed the door open and entered the house, she found her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sunk down into the sofa. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, fatigued but relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’ arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me,” she expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently. It dawned on Jenny that Mum’s love was invisible and intangible, but always surrounded her.
Jenny
①出现在脑海:appear in one’s mind/come to one’s mind
②流下:roll down/stream down
③表达:express/convey
①感谢:gratitude/appreciation
②悲伤的:sad/sorrowful
1】Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.(运用了宾语从句、同位语从句和独立主格结构,其中第一个that引导宾语从句,第二个that引导同位语从句;现在分词作状语)
2】It dawned on Jenny that Mum’s love was invisible and intangible, but always surrounded her.

A
Remarkable wildlife experiences around the world
For nearly a century, people around the globe have celebrated World Animal Day.

D.Approving
